Just to chime in, clock for clock skylake is the same as kaby. Yes kaby has better silicon and gives you better odds on the silicon lottery, but a 4.4ghz 6820HK will match a 4.4ghz 7820HK. That being said both will need a dab of GC/CLU to reach their full potential . If it were a tick tock upgrade then that sweetens the deal, but £330 essentially gets you a better binned chip in this case. Thanks intel.

On a different note has anyone else had trouble changing their BCLK on a 6820HK. Mine used to change in XTU but after a crash it refuses to budge from 100mhz and even bios changes to the base clock don't stick.

Mine seems to be stable at -.025 voltage at 4GHz. Shaved 7 or 8c off Mass Effect: Andromeda. Locks up any higher than -.025 though, or lower depending on your viewpoint. :D

    Do you mean 4.1Ghz or actually 4Ghz? I'm able to maintain a -0.050 with 4Ghz and -0.025 with 4.1Ghz.

Mine seems to be stable at -0.050 at 4.0GHz when I run AIDA64 or OCCT but in games it needs -0.025 to be stable. I tried gaming at 4.1GHz but I needs +0.020 to be stable. Guess my 6820HK is not good for OC.

I had the same problem when I tried to set my OC. XTU refused to change the new values after reboot. I solved the problem uninstalling XTU and downloaded an older version. Seems like the new XTU version is buggy.

Mine does 4.1 with fine with just the default in Dragon Center. I can do 4.2 stable if I raise the voltage, but 3D mark scores are significantly worse with higher voltage.

I tried reinstalling XTU but no dice. The problem was solved for me by clearing CMOS. Turns out that holding down the power button for 30 seconds (i.e. doing a cold shutdown and holding on to the power button) actually clears the CMOS and therefore resets the bios configuration without needing to open up the laptop and pull the button battery.

My freq/offset curve looks like this:

    4000MHz +0mv
    4100MHz +0mv
    4200MHz +25mv
    4300MHz +??mv
    4400MHz +90mv (post, validate, cinebench)
    4500MHz +110mv (post, validate, cinebench)

+110mv seems like a lot but under load the cores only get 1.27v because of the vDroop. Wish I had engineering bios with full LLC control :(

Higher Voltage should not Affect benching score, if you are well within controllable temp. The culprit could be firmware, too low power limits or voltage drop with higher voltage. Or your chips can't handle higher voltage.

I've been able to do 4.1 with -0.025 just fine playing TW3 and Ghost Recon Wildlands. But I don't want to always push it so I always played these games with 4.0 and -0.050. Haven't tried 4.2 yet because I did it once using DGC and it crashed. How did you guys manage to OC it pass 4.2? Did you just use XTU with no DGC?

Anybody here can share what's the maximum RPM of their fans are in Cooler Boost? Before I updated the EC Firmware to .108 the fans were actually hitting pass 4900 RPM: CPU-4900 RPM, GPU-4950 RPM. But now both the fans couldn't get pass 4900 RPM and have even 100 less RPM: CPU 4800 RPM, GPU-4850 RPM. Is the EC Firmware doing this or should I check the fans inside the laptop to clean them. I've just owned the laptop a month and a week.

Did you use the MSI install routine or was it a clean install? I'm asking because I wonder, if the MSI restore procedure can handle a different boot drive.

It looks like most of their respond to the issues is add -dx9. Most people having this issues are after the patched. Hopefully they can fix this issue with next patch.

Occasionally I see RPM between 4850 to 5000, once I notice RPM drop to 4800 but for couple of seconds....

I play Heroes of the Storm, too. There are many different black screen issues with this game since release and I think, they will be there for the next years, too... But normally it's just a game crash and you can restart it. When I understand Bidalo right, he has green lines and has to do a reboot of the complete notebook?
    Does it look like that?
    IMG_7177.JPG

I had that a few times (not only in HotS), but didn't had it again since vBIOS update.

Oh'well. It may be fan monitoring is not supported by the MSI model. Have you tried enable EC support in HWINFO settings and enabled Ec monitoring in sensor panel? What about SpeedFan software?

For 4.2GHz I used the bios to set 42x multiplier and +25mv offset. But there are weird conflicts with dragon center if it's not in turbo mode so always make sure turbo mode is selected. Are you reducing the voltage to be conservative with temperature? The way I see it if macbook pro's can run at 100c core temperatures and not die for two years, MSI's board should be fine at 80-90c with a little extra voltage/oc.

Also to get AIDA64, Linpack, OCCT etc to stress an overclocked x820HK without throttling you must use XTU to set a 250A limit on CORE, CACHE and SA. Just using the BIOS to set core amp limit to max wont work. Oh and throttlestop may be needed but idk. Finally the core/cache voltage rails seem to be tied at least on 6820HK so bear that in mind when over/undervolting.

For reference my 4.2ghz skylake after 30minues of AIDA64 sits at 80c core, 3300 fan and 1.25v.

Max fan 5052 with the button

How is it that you can get your fans to 5052 on Cooler Boost? I can only manage 4800 sometimes it hits 4900. Did you enable maximum fan speed in BIOS? Also I use XTU instead of throttlestop. I only set 100A instead of 250A with 230W.

I updated the firmware using the one in the 7RF (I have the 6RF model). However out of the box without touching the EC Firmware, it was still not hitting 5000 RPM. Just 4950 for the GPU and 4900 for the CPU. Maybe that's just what it is. Not complaining though cause it still cools the laptop just fine. I was just wondering if maybe I can tweak it to get to 5000 RPM but that isn't the case so I'll just leave it at that.

    Hi there,

I got GT73VR 7RE-494CA TITAN and wonder why is laptop not changing to high-performance power plan automatically once i plug in the charger?
If i do it manually then if i unplug charger it will go to balanced power plan automatically - but going to high-performance isn't working.

    thanks

    Hello Everyone,

Im new here but i saw alot of information about the MSI GT73 VR what is awesome!
Im the owner of a GT73 VR 7RF with the 4K screen, after i had a new 6 RF wich died within 3 days i received this upgraded version wich is fantastic but because im not that good with computers i have some questions :).
First if i run a stress test at ETU only at 3,9 GhZ it immediatly runs hot and even starts thermal throttling wich isnt normal if im right?
Im wondering if i maybe need a repaste of the CPU and will that affect my warranty?
Second i have seen posts about screen calibration, does anyone have a proper setup for me maybe,or knows were i can find it and how i integrade it in my laptop?
I have uninstalled dragoncenter btw and downloaded latest drivers etc from MSI site.
    Thnx in advance.

I don't think Windows 10 changes power plan automatically. You can actually go to "Change Advanced Power Settings" and change every individual settings on battery mode or Plugged in:

    GT73-Power-Plan.JPG

When you say it runs hot but how hot is it? did you check the temperature reading?
