Why the need for Battery Turbo boost when you run single 330W? Delta 330w can draw +400w from the wall.

Yeah, I kinda remembered that from the first time I watched the video, I just don't know why MSI wasted the $$ on installing that connector, maybe to keep all the motherboards the same.

What about that plastic block, does it look easy to remove? Support parts? I guess you can order the 2nd slot MXM card + parts, as long as all the support structure is there to accommodate adding them.

Seems like more trouble than it's worth, better to just sell the old one and buy a new one, rather than hack an unsupported (voided warranty?) Frankenstein upgrade :)

So what is the fix for the DC? I can't see it in task manager and I tried re-installing the latest version for my 6RE and it won't even start the setup.exe.

What can I use to control fan speed now? I don't like the temps I'm getting before the fan speed kicks up.

Also, for the people who have replaced the CPU/GPU fans. What does the noise sound like? I keep getting a repeated 4-5 soft tapping noises. sorta like a super quiet rata-ta-ta-ta. I just noticed it tonight when it was very quiet in the room.

The laptop will always be powered by AC when plugged in to the wall. You can evidence this by disconnecting your battery and using your laptop AC only without any issues.

Hybrid power is not a thing anymore. If your power brick can supply enough power to keep the system running it will do so, if not it will shut down.

EC firmware allows the battery to discharge below 100% during normal AC usage, this is to prolong the life of the battery (Lithium batteries last longer when not in use if you keep them at about 80% charge).

Throttling is caused by a lot of things but the power supply is not one of them, when the PSU is overloaded it will either shut itsself down, or the system will see abnormal input voltage and shut itself down.

Technically yes. You just add another 1080 with heatsink and change adapters to dual 330W.

I ended up rolling back to the anniversary update and also rolled back the nvidia drivers and it solved all my issues. I'm giving this creators update another few months before I install it again.

Guys, how to turn off the display? There is no FN hotkey for that.

There is a button in SCM, but that doesn't work, when I press it turn off and some seconds later it automatically turn on again.
I tried unplugging every possible device that might be waking the LCD and even though it continues turning on.

I asked due what said in the quote above. Some ODM's can still force on battery boost although the machines is shipped with 330w.

Both AsusBook and AcerBook will draining power from the battery in fully load although it use the more than strong enough 330W psu.

The old history from MSI was like this... The machines doesn't use the fully potential from the power adapter before the battery was drained down to 30% due battery boost and then started to pull more power from the wall.

    Hi all, I have a GT73VR 7RE Titan - 7820HK/GTX1070

I have had this laptop for several weeks and over the past few days or so I have been experiencing some weird problems.

    1. When I close my lid and then reopen it my screen appears to be on but is all black and requires a hard shutdown and turn on to work again.
    2. From a cold boot the last 2 mornings after shutting down through windows the night before the screen turned on and msi logo came up briefly before turning into a pixellated multicolour horizontal line across the screen and I think but am not sure the computer was frozen. A hard shutdown and then turning it on again after this leads it to booting up fine.

Sleep functions fine when i press the power button (set to set to sleep) and wakes up fine when i press it again.
Close Lid power setting is set to Do nothing on both battery and Mains.
Fast Boot is disabled in the bios and always has been.

Basically I'm a little confused at the moment with what to try next and wondering if anyone else has had any thing like this happening and hoping for some input.

Oh, and my bios version is E17A1IMS.30A. On the msi website there is a bios update here https://www.msi.com/Laptop/support/GT73VR-7RE-TITAN.html#down-bios whose description is "Fix load default then switch iGPU to dGPU, panel black screen." which may or may not be relevant I'm not sure lol, its not particularly descriptive.

Which 1080 can be used as the 2nd 1080? And, does the 1st 1080 - or for that matter the 2nd 1080 - have SLI connectors?

Is there enough room for a thin metal adapter between the card and the mount, so the card can mount to the adapter, and the adapter can mount to the.... mount?

If not, then the GT83 and GT73 MXM boards aren't inter-operable, and the upgrade cannot be done.

Looks like the GPU mounting holes are not identical on GT73 and GT83 like Q937 said. I think it's because of the different heatsink design on both models.

It's because of the core positioning required to fit GDDR5X with short enough trace lengths on the almost-standard MXM form factor I believe.

you can buy any part from MSI....you just have to pay for it...simple process is that provide NB serial to TomH and ask for part price, 90% chance he will not ask you why you need the part, you will receive a form and price, fill the form, attach the payment detail and you will have the part at your door step.....

as end user I can only ask parts for NB which I have registered with MSI but as re-seller you can ask parts for any NB... ;)

my guess GTX1080 will cost you $500 or more where SLI GPU HS will cost you near $100 where Single GPU HS cost $60 which I personally confirmed with TomH

other option is I think someone selling OEM GTX1080 on ebay too....pulled form working GT73VR....

So you are saying that we can figure out a way to get a 1080 in a 1070 laptop? I spoke to MSI yesterday because I wanted to update my 1070 with a 1080 and they said that they cannot provide seperate video cards at this time...I would love to figure out a way to do it because I am kicking myself in the butt for getting the 7820hk but not getting the 1080 and just doing the 1070...Although I have been able to crank out some serious overclocking with afterburner...

OEM MSI GTX1080 on ebay not available anymore, someone bought it, last I checked it's price was around $600....so this option not valid any more...

    Here it's sold

Since you have xRE model with GTX 1070, I'm not sure MSI will sale you GTX 1080 as part but last I checked with Tom H, this is what he told me

Since we change the policy recently that all the parts request has to go through our HQ in Taiwan; therefore, it may take few business days to have the part#, availability and price information and the lead time will be 6-8 weeks if we have the parts available

so in the end it all depend on availability....

Skip support and contact Tom H.....he is the guy....you need to speak with but again I'm not sure MSI will sale you part of xRF model if you own xRE model.....

By the end of the year 2017/ first quarter of 2018 pretty sure you'll see 8K intel series CPU and 20 series nVidia GPU. If nVidia sticks to the design it'll probably fit in a GT73 and they'll have another upgrade program by then.

But then the question becomes even if they have one that fits in the case will they do the same thing and not sell it seperately making someone who wants the upgraded video card to have to buy a new laptop...and no way in hell will I turn around and purchase another laptop after dropping $2500 to only use it for a year...although I did get someone to buy my M17 R3 for $1000 making this one "only" $1500

The seller on ebay is selling GT73VR in parts and all parts fully functional, someone also bought 120Hz screen from him....either someone changed 4K screen to 120Hz or broke the screen and needs OEM replacement..... ;)

Although SLI would be awesome the problem is so many games are not optimized for the SLI feature...it would be as we say in the auto world a "dyno queen" meaning it would do amazing on benchmarks but when it comes time to play it doesn't provide a "huge" improvement over a overclocked 1080

thats my experience with it too. great in benchmarks, sucks balls in games, from the micro-stuttering to the myriad of games that don't support it well or don't support it at all. single powerful GPUs FTW

lets not forget the ability to use only 1 power brick rather than having to use 2

Yeah I know TomH but I think GTX 1080 will cost more than $500. :)

SLI maybe not optimized for games such as OpenGL or direct 3D. However, people do use it for 3D modeling and rendering (and create games) and according to my test the SLI 1070 on rendering does double the performance, it took about 12 minutes to complete rendering one frame but a single 1080 took about 22 minutes.

    Hi Guys,

I noticed in HWINFO that SST (Speed Shift Technology) is disabled. I've read on some articles that it increases performance on some levels so I was curious how it will work for me. But how? I can't seem to find the option in the BIOS to enable it. Or do I need to use the program ThrottleStop to enable it in Windows? What is the best option here?

    Thanks!

    After installing .107 EC firmware,

    First snapshot

Fans on Auto, CPU Temp lower but CPU Fan RPM higher where GPU Temp higher and GPU Fan RPM Lower, default behavior is Temp at 40 (CPU / GPU) Fan RPM should not be above 1200RPM

    2nd snapshot

CPU Advance Fan Curve same as .108, didn't change back to .107 where I re-installed DGC but same result

Battery Charging also stuck at 99%

    re-installing EC.108 fixed all issues....

I think once .108 Installed, you cannot go back to .107..... :(

Did you reset the battery using the hole after going back to 107?

battery only stuck at 99% with 30 mins to complete charge message (where I waited 15 mins but remaining time was not changing) in .107, once re-installed .108, after bootup, battery charged 100% within 5 mins.

I do like the spacing in CPU fan curve but in last couple of weeks, I m seeing strange behavior, if CPU went under-load, CPU fan kicks in suddenly where temps still lower...so I thought something not right or malfunctioning so wanted to go back to .107 but now it looks like there is no going back.....

Another thing after installing .107 and re-installing .108

Both CPU / GPU fans 5000RPM where before CPU fan always 51xx and GPU 50xx

Both fans speed do variate but very little and back to 5000RPM

no idea it's good or bad..... o_O

though I lost 100RPM on CPU fan.... :(

I got the Creators Upgrade via Automatic Updates and have problems with TrueColor now. Every time I start a game (e.g. Diablo 3), it kills the color settings and the display looks like in the few seconds after boot (until TrueColor is started). On my display that looks horrible... I have to reselect the TC profile, but right after I switch to the game, it's messed up again. Anyone else with that problem or with an idea what I can do?
TC is driving me crazy. When I have problems with my laptop, it's because of TC. But the ICC profiles shared here don't work for me (they are all much too dark).
I think I will buy a colorimeter now, so I can get rid of that stupid tool...
