I tightened down the screws until they bottomed out. I assume that's the correct way?

I hope so, that's what I did.
Did you do a little on one corner and then diagonally the opposite corner and keep doing it like that? Did you also repaste it at the same time? Maybe the paste did not spread correctly?

as @Atma said thickness of thermal pads are 1.0mm but Arctic Thermal pads are bad choice, they are hard as compare to stock thermal pads, Phobya thermal pads are also hard, only very good choice of soft pads and with excellent thermal conductivity are Thermal Grizzly Minus 8 pads, they are soft and they fit like they made for this laptop.
I personally tested both Arctic and Phobya and they are no good on this laptop, buy Minus 8 and replace Arcitic pads
they may get fried....phuuuuuffffffffAtma, DukeCLR, Donald@Paladin44 and 1 other person like this. -

I turn on Updates although my ISO already comes with the latest updates so you CAN disable updates if you want.
Windows 10 Creators Update Bloatware Free Edition
Now, I keep Windows updates enabled but I do 2 things:
1) Disable Drive Updates through Windows Updates using O&O ShutUp10
2) In Group Policy Editor, only for the PRO Edition, I also set a rule that says Offer Drive Updates through Windows Updates = Disabled -
Question. I have the MSI GT73VR Titan Pro-479 (with the 4k Display/with g-sync). Ive been able to play certain games with full on ultra settings and 4k resolution seamlessly upon initial launch. I have the games running off my PCIe SSD for speed. My qualm here is that even though the games seem to play excellent upon initial launch, after about an hour or so of playing, i get crazy frame skipping to the point i have to drop down to 1080 resolution. Granted, it isnt bad that i have to drop down to this res. I dont mind it. But i dont know why i get this sudden change in performance. Like i said everything works great when i first start playing but all of a sudden i get that change in performance, and whats more is i can never seem to get the games to play at 4k resolution after that. Any of you guys have an idea why this keeps happening?
-
If it's not temperature related it could be that your battery dropped to a point where it was taking power away from you GPU to charge.
-
Is leaving Windows Updates on such a good idea at any time?
Don't you want to know what the updates are before they get downloaded, or applied on their own timing?
For stability sake, I would think you'd want to maintain control over Windows Updates better, especially with Windows 10's track record...
Are the tweaks to stop Windows Updates for the current Creators release working?DukeCLR likes this. -
I have everything closed. Same for my Win 7 setup. Only standalone patches "if" needed. And only install after long research after problems!! Aka almost never problems with my setups!!Donald@Paladin44, DukeCLR and hmscott like this.

Exactly, the whole point of reigning in Windows 10 by making a special build for install is to get control of Windows Updates / etc, to stop them - not to open up Windows Updates for random changes.Donald@Paladin44, DukeCLR and Papusan like this.

Yeah, but on the other hand, it's hard to "freeze" and stick with a particular point in time image of Windows 10, no matter where you pick that point, it's got bugs you need fixed.
So you gotta keep rolling the dice with new Windows Updates, hoping "this one's gonna do it!" it's gonna fix that "last" bug!!
Then the next Windows 10 update brings more bugs

You might want to use the Intel AMT check tool to make sure you aren't vulnerable:
How to check for the Intel Active Management exploitSpartan@HIDevolution, Atma, DukeCLR and 1 other person like this. -
thank you, I checked with " Intel-SA-00075-GUI.exe" which says your system is safe. should I install anything or thats ok?
-
Yeah, I would "hope" that as long as you pass that machine is ok
You might read up a little on the issue, I posted some text and links, as did @Phoenix and @Papusan, there are a couple of directions this vulnerability can take either directly or through services that depend on it.
It mostly affects high end laptops and servers / workstations, but it's good to check just to be sure.
There might be IMEI BIOS settings unset that are keeping you from being vulnerable, so next time you are in your BIOS check the Intel IMEI / AMT related settings.powerofviva, Spartan@HIDevolution, Fire_Child22 and 3 others like this. -
I read the link that posted there and checked by the tools which said i am not vulnerable.
- so can you please let me know the bios setting that should I set to make sure my laptop will keep safe.
- shouldnt I update the intel driver? they didnt fixed that bug yet?
thank youLast edited: May 11, 2017hmscott likes this. -
If you aren't vulnerable then IMEI isn't active, so updating or installing IMEI - activating it - might *make* you vulnerable
BIOS settings are usually unique to the make / model I don't have a GT73VR, so I don't know what the options are - go into the BIOS and dig around - it's likely disabled so don't enable it
Spartan@HIDevolution likes this. -
are you kidding me?
why should I Make my laptop vulnerable? -
You need to re-read it, I wasn't suggesting enabling it, I was suggesting to *not* enable it

Hey, no problem
We should consider ourselves lucky, look at all these Dell computers that are vulnerable (Table 1):

Hey!
Does anyone have patch notes to BIOS 315 ? What does it fix over BIOS 313 ? (GT73VR 7RF) -
WARNING !
BIOS 315 is not uploaded on MSI website yet, but when it will be, DO NOT update to it! I do not have patch notes, but it's date:
There might be positive sides to update, but for me it kills 1 thing that makes the GT73VR is better than all other laptops. It destroys CPU stability. With BIOS 315 I have got this after a Fire Strike run (with older bios it is rock stable):
I was using the latest hotfix driver, I doubt that makes this bug. Or the vga driver could do this ? -

Guys, I updated to BIOS 317 via the device manager/windows updates. Can I flash the older BIOS 313 or would that brick my laptop?

Wait what's going on here? There's a Bios .315 and a Bios .317? And both of them are doing weird stuff to your CPU?
-

yes, if you go to device manager > Firmware, right click on system firmware and try to search for updates automatically, it will download a new BIOS through Windows updates and fux0r up your taptop

Perhaps there is a reason why MSI has not posted them on their website? Maybe I should put in this phrase if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it

Bios 313 is sort of needed as it fixes problems with getting black screens when using the MUX switcher. So I'd say that's a good reason to update to it. Only takes like 2 minutes anyway.
Atma, hmscott and Donald@Paladin44 like this. -
@Papusan
If you use the amiflash command line tool, and add /nodate to it, it will let you flash an older BIOS than you have currently, and no it shouldn't brick your laptop, I do it often when checking BIOS's.
If you use afudos you need to add /nr /pbnc :
afudos /newbios.rom /nr /pbnc
/nr = not check rom ID's
/pbnc = clear CMOSLast edited: May 11, 2017 -
After I connect the mobile phone (Android). When i check windows update. I get a driver for the mobile phone connection. I have turned off driver update. However when i check the update i get the driver for the mobile phone. When I check on the device manager part of the show hidden -other device looks android device. Is there a automatic program to clean the registry on device manager that shows unknown device. And devices that are not always connected ??

I didn't use any commands bro. I just put the 313 official BIOS from MSI in the root of C: then went to BIOS > UEFI Update. I did get a warning telling me this is an invalid BIOS or whatnot but the flash went through just fine.Papusan, Atma, hmscott and 1 other person like this. -
+1 you guys are killing me with all the BIOS drama, lol.Atma, hmscott and Spartan@HIDevolution like this.

Wait, what?
You were running (verified?) 317, then did the downgrade via BIOS UEFI?
A BIOS firmware flash that downgraded to an *older* firmware? And, you verified it's really 313 now, and was 317 before reflashing?
That's new, the BIOS flash wouldn't do that before. It would simply give that error and fail to overwrite the newer BIOS with an older BIOS.
Wild.
-
Going from an older BIOS, lower number, to a newer BIOS, higher number, right?
Going back has required using the command line method in the past - that's why it exists
That's why there is a warning in the BIOS flash when you try to downgrade the BIOS, it's never worked for me before, it errors and fails to overwrite the newer BIOS with an older BIOS.
