I did a downgrade on the bios. Only through the bios update tool 317 to 313. I think this does not fail because this is the official bios of msi. And bios 317 are obtained through device manager updates from microsoft

Now that I need, as I've had that issue.
Where do you guys get the BIOS numbers?
Help Desk says my BIOS version is E17A1IMS.107, the one I downloaded from MSI is E17A1IMS.10ADonald@Paladin44 likes this. -
I have GT73VR - 7RE with gtx 1070 atm. I am wondering if I should do clean install on this system? I've read that some people have had some problems while installing Dragon Center etc when has done a clean install. And by clean install I mean downloading media creation tool -> creating bootable installation usb -> formating all drives and installing windows again.
Should I do it? What problems I might get? -
@Phoenix is the one that downgraded from 317 to 313, so I think he can help guide you better - at least let you know why he downgraded to 313.
What was wrong with 317?DukeCLR, Donald@Paladin44, Papusan and 2 others like this. -
so far so good, I hadnt any problem till now. I am just wondering if phonex or other people here faced to any problem with 317 that force them to return yo 313.
@Phoenix it is appreciated to let me know why and how you downgraded to 313 ?Last edited: May 12, 2017 -

the problem was CPU stability, my same overclock would give me crashes/blue screens when under heavy load and I know for a fact that my CPU can handle that 4.2 GHz overclock since I've been running it for months.
I just downloaded the 313 BIOS, unzipped the folder to the root of C: then went to BIOS > UEFI Update
Then I had to try until I found the right disk to choose that folder. I got a warning that this is not a valid BIOS. Whatever, I clicked OK and proceeded, once the flash is done, the screen will go black after a reboot for a while, like 3 minutes, then it will reset the EC and boot back, keep hitting the DEL key to enter BIOS again, load setup defaults, then save and exit. now as soon as you see the MSI logo, turn off your laptop, remove the power cable for 30 seconds, then put it back in and start the laptop again, go into BIOS, then re-set all the options you had before the way you like including RAID or AHCI mode.
PS: I am not responsible if your brick your system, I am just telling you what I did and worked for me.Bennyr6, Fire_Child22, Donald@Paladin44 and 3 others like this. -
Thank you, I downgraded to 313 succcessfully.but the date of the BIOS is 29-1-2017 and in MSI websire is 03-2017 ! is that MSI website problem?DukeCLR and Donald@Paladin44 like this. -

Well I repasted my GT73VR 7RE, with Kyronaut Grizzly, and it definitely helped even out the cores and I think was at least a 5C drop overall. With the stock paste, there was an 8-9C difference between core1/3 and core 2/4 which was rather huge (with prime blend). After repaste, around 4C. Much better, and the temps dropped. Not by much but was noticable. So far stable at 4.2 ghz with -100mv undervolt. With Stockfish (Chess engine) running at 4.2 ghz and -100mv, temps were 67-65-68-66 after 20 minutes. Big thanks to the multiple people, including Mr. Hamster, who recommended Grizzly. And no risk of destroying electronics like with LM.
I still can't do prime blend for more than 3 passes, as during the third pass, temps get to 92C, so I just said screw that and need to stop as I was reaching towards Prochot. Is prime even a realistic test? Is it using AVX or something with blend? Wattage was 75W+ on the third pass.... Before repaste, it got there on the 2nd pass, but after repaste, I think it didnt exceed 86 or 88C until pass 3 started.
Maybe I"ll throw some on my 2600k desktop later since you guys said MX-4 wears out after awhile, and it's been a few years now...
*Edit*
Can't even think about small FFT prime. Temps get hot fast and the unbalanced cores thing happens again. But it's much better with blend after repaste, but again pass 3 simply gets too hot. Should I try (not anytime soon) the spread method with the kyronaut syringe spreader or is that normal for a 7820hk? Temps look great in Stockfish 8 cores(67-65-68-66 max, 4.2 ghz -100mv)...but small FFT is a joke...
P.S. Fans were set to 100% speed.Last edited: May 13, 2017 -
Can you or anyone please start a step by step instruction with picture to help to repaste and other information about undervolting and Grizzzly ...

Mine is getting worse and I'm not sure what to do about it. I have to run on Eco to make it through a game of Quake Champions. I've thought about restoring MSI burn backup to see if that fixes it but God what a headache.hmscott likes this.

Hey guys, is the GT80 Titan battery the EXACT SAME battery that is used in the GT73VR 7RE/6RE? Does anyone know?

No need for a clean install, The laptop isn't clogged by bloatware.

Maybe others should do the same?

No problems with Control Center, everything works with a Clean install of the Creators Update except True Color, it works from the right click context menu to change the color profiles but the actual app doesn't start after a few reboots, only the right click works.

Help a brottha out. You guys never did answer my question:

Okey so UPDATE on the issue of hard reboot in GT73VR 6RE when playing games ( CS GO in particular ) so i think doing a DDU and installing the driver fromthe MSI site ( w/o 3D vision nor Geforce experience ) fixed the problem ! The only issue that u'll need to fix is stopping windows 10 from updating the drivers ! that's all. i hope this information will help some that are in the same position as i am
-
Well I found a partial fix .. sort of. I downgraded the driver to 376.39 from MSI. Now in anything above eco the screen just goes black instead of locking up and rebooting in games. Then I get the display driver stopped working message. I've even taken the thing apart and checked and repasted again. I guess the only thing left to try is an MSI restore and see if that changes anything, but how do I stop it from installing updates before I can test it in the game again? I have to have an internet connection to do that.hmscott likes this.

107 was the previous version for our laptop. 10A is the newest. Is that what you mean?
-
Windows 7/8.1 lets you completely disable Windows Update, try that
You can also get another boot device to swap in to restore out of the box to, preserving your current state in the device pulled out.
You could also install Windows 7/8.1 onto another device instead too. Keep the Windows 10 device out of the laptop until MS stops messing around. -

Use O&O ShutUp10 to disable Windows and Driver updates.
You simply cannot use the ancient MSI Driver on the Creators Update, you have to use the latest 382.19 driver to stop black screens/flickering.
I am using all the latest drivers and everything works fine, albeit, this is a clean Windows 10 installation not an upgrade.powerofviva, Papusan and hmscott like this. -
@Kevin, the 10A is hexadecimal, "A=10", so 10A hexadecimal = 110 in decimal.
IDK why MSI does that, there aren't enough BIOS's shipped to worry about running out of decimal numbers.
Hexadecimal is often used for inventory numbering, as it gives a more dense compact count. Example FFFF hexadecimal is much greater than 9999 decimal (FFFF hexadecimal = 65535 decimal).
Hexadecimal is surely not needed for BIOS numbering

But I cannot use 382.19 because when playing a game anything above eco setting causes a lockup and reboot. It still doesn't work right with 376.39 but at least it doesn't lock up, just gives me a driver stopped responding message. I am at my wits end trying to figure the cause. My install of creators is clean also, just not the no bloat version like yours. I started having this problem not long after creators and shortly after starting the quake champions beta. It was just occasional then. Now it's everytime.

The best thing is to let MSI support know in detail what you just described! Maybe this will get their lazy drivers team to update that ancient nVIDIA Driver to a newer but tested OEM one.

I started a Steam reinstall of DOOM late last night and tried it this morning at 4GHz. No crashes and no problems. Maybe it's just Quake Champions that is causing it but I haven't seen anyone else with this particular problem.

Time to stop being lazy, and repaste my CPU/GPU. My 6820HK is hitting 92C.
Bought some Grizzly Kryonaut on Amazon.
Well, I'm trying to figure out which BIOS fixes the MUX black screen issue. -

Good luck. That's the worst thermal paste I've used ever! Works ok for 2 days then watch your temps go up slowly day by dayPapusan likes this. -

For the 7820HK versions, The .313 Bios does. (the .30A must be already flashed in order to flash to 313 with UEFI Bios update). If your Bios is older than .30A (this is impossible with 7820HK systems), you must use the DOS tool to flash to .30A first.
I don't know about the 6820HK.
However isn't the chipset completely identical?
If it's intel CM238, can't you just use the one for the 7th gen 7820HK models? Or will that somehow brick the motherboard?
Does anyone know if the chipset is identical?
I DO know that people were using the EC Firmware for the 7th gen versions on their 6th gen boards successfully (in order to fix some fan curve issue IIRC), but of course this is all at your own risk. A few of us may have PLCC or other flash tools like the RT809F, which can flash a chip after you desolder it.hmscott likes this. -
No, it is not.
the 6820HK have the CM236 as far as i know.hmscott likes this. -

An update...
MSI received my laptop on Friday and tonight they responded that it was found to have "induced damage" and said it was not covered by warranty and will cost $150 to fix.
Needless to say, I'm pretty disappointed. What's the point of uploading my invoice right away and registering the accidental damage warranty if they don't cover accidental damage?
I've replied back asking them to reconsider but I'm not very hopeful at this point.
