Thank you very much for the reply and feedback,

So, you did not have any problems with all those vbios you used? no reboot/crash while gaming?

That's kinda weird, as there is a Hidef board on the other side of the laptop - with the full gold plated headphone jack... and that one you didn't damage the case entry point... hmmm, I hope they didn't "repair" the wrong one.

As I recall from your photo, the case was definately "chunked" at the normal headphone jack.

I guess we wait until it arrives back from RMA and you can inspect it.

If MSI did repair the wrong headphone port - maybe that board had a fault too? - I would immediately let MSI know and insist they cover the return shipping this time - maybe even reimburse you for the first shipping you paid since you now will be without the laptop another week to fix the broken port/jack/case - make sure you let them know you want a new case bottom (top?) that replaces the "chunked" plastic headphone jack hole.

Nope no problems, aside from the actual game/driver caused crashes.. nope.

The non-gpu boost/1645 vbios works well to those having issues if their gpu boost goes up too fast not enough voltage etc.. This can also be alleviated by downclocking on MSI Afterburner so that GPU Boost wont hit super high frequencies. Another issue could be from RAM, but I haven't had problems on my end, tops out about +500-600MHz on afterburner.

I'm confused. My laptop only has 1 headphone jack. It is part of the 4 gold plated connectors on the left side of the laptop. I broke one of those gold connectors and there was some plastic broken in the hole. But I only have 1 set of audio connections. What is this other port you're talking about?

Maybe that broken plastic is connected to the audio board? I have no idea. They are very vague.

1070 laptop owners, with reboot/crash problems, even with msi afterburner downclock they still had problems.

The only thing that fix the issue is the vbios with 1443mhz limit or chinese vbios 1650mhz limit.

But, it seems, there are 1070 gpus working good, like yours, with stock vbios, so there must be some problem with some 1070 gpus for sure... like mine.

The problem is not the ram, since all people with reboot/crash problem, fix the issue with the other two vbios.

Quick question: your ram speed is limited to 2400mhz on bios?

I checked in the manual, and there is only 1 headphone jack on this model, not two - I'm thinking of the GT8X series :)

The "board" is the ESS Sabre Hifi DAC board - and if the jack is soldered to that board, MSI would only need to replace that board instead of the motherboard.
    • Exclusive ESS SABRE HiFi DAC for lossless, high-quality audio
So, nothing to worry about, there was only 1 audio port available to be fixed :)

Both of my 1070's (one on a GT72VR 7RE, which I RMA'd for locked CPU), one on my Titan (with unlocked 7820hk) worked fine with the stock Bioses. I just flashed the 8A Chinese Bios because I like to control my overclocks, not have it automatically boost whenever it wants.

Thank you very much for the feedback,

You been using GT72VR 7RE and Titan for how long with default vbios? how many hours of gaming did you had with default vbios?

Is the chinese vbios trustful at all? the chinese website is not msi official chinese website right?

It simply lets you manually overclock the boost. And please stop spamming the same post in every forum and thread you can touch.
You spammed REPEATEDLY over on the MSI forums, which is not allowed.

I think you can manually overclock the boost with all other vbios?

I did not spammed repeatedly, i shared information in every different thread about the reboot/crash issue, and i shared valuable information for all users.

Theres lots of different threads with different users and laptops regarding this issue, so i shared the information with 5 different threads.

You bumped 5 different threads to the top, which all talk about the same thing. one was enough. Anyway chinese Bios boosts simply to 1645 mhz and you can increase the boost by overclocking manually. I believe the stock Bios boosts automatically based on temperature, but its not important. I'm new to Nvidia (my desktop card is AMD) so I really am not that familiar how it works.

GPU Boost 3.0 with pascal is a bit different from previous. This one will boost you till it hits a certain temp then throttle and in some cases it can hit high unstable clocks.

The bios just stops at 1645 giving you a little bit more control without GPU boost kicking in. SO.. 1645 + 100 = 1745 instead of +100 being just an offset.

Hi guys I have almost decided after spending so much time in finding the right rig for me. It's gonna be GT73VR 7RE this one to be exact https://www.amazon.com/GT73VR-TITAN-427-i7-7820HK-Windows-Notebook/dp/B01N5PIZML/ . Earlier I was considering GT72VR 7RE normal or dragon edition but I decided to strech my budget a little bit more to get this one. Once I get the laptop I will get the 960 EVO 250GB after few days.
I will get it delivered to my friend's place in US which he will carry back to India and hopefully save me from customs and other charges.
I have read about MSI global warranty so I hope I there are no surprises there and I would not have to RMA it back to US if anything goes down.

I am planning get my friend to check the laptop throughly after it is delivered to him like running some bench like firestrike, crystal disk etc. Please suggest more to make sure I have the right setup.

Apart from this do I need to be aware of anything else?

Well that makes more sense then! lol

I wish I could find a good teardown video for this model so I could see how involved a process it was. I'd still like to know if they had to remove my HSF and if they would have done a proper repaste.

    Thank you for the reply,

I understand, the chinese vbios is good to overclock, the thing is, i dont feel comfortable doing overclock (im no expert in this area).

Id rather let the system use the default boost mode, and not worry about it.

So you have GT72VR and GT73VR laptops, does both your laptops does not work good with default vbios?

The thing that confuses me, is that some 1070 laptops works fine with default vbios, and other laptops thats not the case.

    Thank you for the reply,

The problem is, the people with problems with stock 1070 vbios, even with downclock they still had reboot/crash problems.

Explain that to me. :( o_O

Interesting, so the chinese version boosts to 1745mhz and stops? that graph is from your laptop?

    Is the chinese vbios trustful?

You beat me by a minute!

I was just coming back here to post this:

It looks like the audio board is connected to the motherboard by 2 screws but would require much disassembly to reach, including removal of the HSF.

I wonder if they repaste when they do that? Could it raise my temps if they don't?

I don't remember what comfort runs and I'm not on that laptop right now. Eco never goes above about 1.25GHz for me. You could try installing Intel XTU and see if that helps any. I have the 6RE. Not sure if that would make any difference. Same CPU.

First, I didn't mean to flame you on the MSI forums, but the moderator even contacted you and told you that spamming was against the rules.
Second, both the GT72VR and GT73VR work fine with stock Bios.
Third, I RMA'd the GT72VR because I wanted the titan for the unlocked CPU.
Fourth, i flashed the stock bios back into the titan and it only boosted to boost clocks and temps were the same as in the Chinese Bios. If boost was 1645 mhz (stock 1445), it would boost to 1645 and not exceed that. 8A Chinese Bios was the same. And Valley benchmark was an identical score. So for me, there was no difference at all between stock bios and 8A Bios. They perform identically. (in this case 86.04.56.00.3A). The one thing I did see was boosts over 2000 mhz on both bioses, only on things like intermission or load screens where the FPS was over 1000 fps or something, and GPU-Z showed "Voltage reliability", but that happened on both. So on my system there doesn't seem to be any differences. And I'm not experienced enough to do this intense testing other people do (nor do I want to).

Thank you very much for the the feedback :)
No problem mate, lets put that behind our backs

So let me see if i get it,

    - You sent back your GT72VR and trade it for GT73VR because the GT73VR Titan has unlocked CPU right?
    - And GT73VR comes with a different vbios then GT72VR, that works exactly like the chinese 8A? (so 3A from MSI = Chinese 8A), right?

I just confirmed with MSI and they say if i use 3rd party / modifided vbios i loose the warranty...

I dont have the original vbios of my laptop or any other vbios for my laptop, the official page of GT72VR 7RE doesnt have any vbios to download, so i cant go back to the original vbios.

    Dont know what to do.

    Other questions:

    - Tell me something, you can limit the gpu boost maximum speed on msi afterburner for example? or is there any program that can limit gpu boost maximum speed?
    - What GPUZ "Voltage realiabity" means?
    - Your ram speed is limited to 2400mhz on bios?

You can buy the 330W Delta.
This ebay seller can get it from MSI; I already asked about it.

    http://www.ebay.com/usr/lava-frostycomputers-msi?ul_noapp=true

I know you can also put a MXM 1080 in a GT73VR if it comes with the 1070, as the bioses and motherboards are identical, assuming of course you also switch out the PSU (the video card is NOT soldered in).....that is..if you can find one (there are two layout versions, and I still need to look which one MSI uses).

Yes I was unhappy with the 7700HQ. Very happy with the 7820HK which is stable at 4.2 ghz undervolted with -100mv and 4.4 ghz with stock volts with no power limit. Sure beats 3.4 ghz throttling to 2.8 ghz whenever power exceeds 45W.

PLEASE NEVER TELL MSI YOU USED A MODDED BIOS. Just flash the original Bios before any RMA and never say anything. What they don't know won't hurt them.
Only thing to be careful about is people who use liquid metal TIM on CPU's and have to mod with insulated tape...all that stuff has to be removed.

I had the original GT72VR vbios but got rid of it. Just use the 1070 Bios for the GT73VR. It's the exact same card anyway. (I used the 8A Bios on both cards). You can use 86.04.56.00.3A.
If you have GT72VR you can also just dump the existing Bios with GPU-Z, and then flash it back later. It works perfectly. It doesnt work on GT73VR because Optimus seems to be interfering with GPU-Z's ability to dump the Bios. Maybe you can use NVFLASH to make a backup.

As I said i dont know about this GPU maximum speed thing. Even on Chinese Bios, with no overclock (1445 mhz stock, 1645 mhz boost), I've see it exceed 1850 mhz on load screen (example: Valley benchmark "close benchmark" end screen, FPS=2500 fps, clock=1883 mhz, GPU-Z showing "VREL", on BOTH Bioses. But usually at 1645 mhz but seen it sometimes go to 1683 or 1709 very briefly).

VREL=voltage reliability. Don't know what it means...probably core speed too high for the current voltage.
I dont know about RAM speed. I don't like to overclock RAM. I won't go higher than +300 mhz. Saw some reports of people damaging their RAM by overclocking the memory too high. I set a profile for +200 core and +300 memory.

I assume you're talking about the "Mysteriously removed" 86.04.5B.00.44" bios, that I saw and downloaded before it was removed. Someone said they flashed it and it gave them problems. I'm not flashing it. You can have it if you want. Besides 86.04.5B.00.8A (chinese) is newer in build anyway...8A (hex) is a higher number than 44 (hex).

Like @Donald@HIDevolution said, only drive which can fit is 9.5mm thickness, any drive above 2 TB or 3TB won't fit in the bay, thickness of 4TB or 5TB 2.5" is 15mm so the answer is no but there is a work around, if you can sacrifice the default 1TB drive, you can use SATA III extender cable and can fit the 4 or 5 TB 2.5" drive in left side empty space (where MSI suppose to put the 2nd GTX 1080 and forgot....... o_O), rest you need is a small mod so drive don't get lose and run around in the laptop, you can use rubber rails or can use rubber pieces with some double tape (double tape use in mobile and laptop screen repairing is ideal for this), sky is the limit, no harm or damage to any OEM part.

It seems like this 8A vbios fixed my crash issue....i played one game of dota and laptop didnt reset.I dont have any more time so ill do some detailed testing tomorrow, but with normal bios that boosted to 1700+mhz games and laptop kept crashing almost instantly.

The default vbios I used for a few weeks - month. I only jump around different vbios to test them out (my nature lol) I also test out almost every different driver, this is how I find fixes/solutions for people who have problems with their computers and help them accordingly.

Well we know currently that there is no utility to modify pascal cards atm, otherwise we would have unlocked/no limit vbios flying around. MSI could have released a vbios for specific people asking for them or a small number of people/crowd. The vbios from the Chinese website was a case where he sent the laptop off for repairs and it came back working fine but with a different vbios. So they extracted it and uploaded online for the public.

Since not everyone has this problem it seems that MSI never bothered to put it on their official website rather they would probably sent it to people who ask for it/or people that send it in their units for repairs. Last time I checked for our specific laptops there were only 2? maybe 3 vbios released but there are 5-7+ different MSI GTX1070 vbios out there floating around.

    Great information, thank you !

    - Why did you use 8A vbios on both laptops if the original vbios was working good?
    - What is "dump the bios" ?
    - I dont want to overclock the ram, i want to change the ram 2400 and buy ddr 4 3000mhz Corsair, but bios is limited to 2400mhz (GT72VR 7RE)

Thank you for sharing the official vbios that mysteriously was removed, the only official vbios working good is debug 86.04.5B.00.82 = 1443 limit.

As i said 8A and 82 vbios fix the reboot/crash problem, but 8A is not official and limits to 1650mhz , and 82 limits to 1443mhz.

Thank you for the reply, good information !

"Since not everyone has this problem "

So its true that not all pascal laptops from msi suffers from this issue right?

One thing that i dont know because theres no feedback,is, the people with this crash problem can overclock with 8A vbios ?
I think the problem is still present but doesnt manifest until certain clock limit, since 8A limits to 1650mhz, the problem doesnt manifest.
Maybe this 10% of 1070 gpu "defective" is unstable above lets say 1800mhz, so with 8A or 82 vbios you are not fixing the problem, but... avoiding the problem.

So, even if the 8A and 82 vbios "avoids" the crash, you still cant overclock or use shift mode, so you still have an inferior laptop in comparison to other users with no problems.

Maybe, the only way, to fix this issue at 100% is to change the gpu?

    Am i right?

Well not all GPUs are created equal and each one may have different power req to each a certain clock. Now what I think is GPU Boost may be too aggressive and the voltage required for that specific frequency is not enough. Could probably fixed with a bios tweak to give more/less voltage etc... But in this case we reach stability/no issues with lower frequency. It doesn't really help that we cant really control much of the card so we're only left with the vbios they provide. Now this is just my speculation based on testing so don't quote me on that xD.

Using the 1645/no gpu-boost helps with the issue because it doesn't go up to higher frequencies. Now playing games and monitoring frequencies I see the regular vbios hit 1800-1900 and in extreme benchmarking can hit 2K which is not sustainable on the laptops as oppose to the desktop counterparts which cap out and sustainable/better cooling at 1950-2100> etc...

I think when the GPU runs cool the GPU Boost sees the opportunity to crank up the frequencies and wont throttle till temps rise so games that are not overclock sensitive will be able to run while other games crash instantly.

As for overclocking, you saw the table that I uploaded. At a certain point it tops out at a specific voltage range so overclocking may be possible but to a lower range frequency maybe 1700-1800>, YMMV.
For others that have no problems you'll see a performance boost in benchmarks and in some games because GPU boost is not going up and down in frequency and stays on the same level giving you better/consistent results in benchmarks.

Thank you very much for taking the time to reply,

    - " Could be fixed with a bios tweak", but msi doesnt do anything... the problem is reported since August (pascal launch), until now the only official fix is debug vbios .82 = 1443 limit.
    - I dont understand the table picture, is the graph from your laptop? what im looking at?
    - I share the same opinion about the problem, it is a fact, thats how it works, boost 3.0 will overlock till it hits a certain temp then throttle and in some cases it can hit high unstable clocks and crash/reboot
    - Is it possible to limit the gpu boost clock with a program? or limit the maximum clock the card can reach with a program?
    - "Overclocking may be possible but to a lower range frequency maybe 1700-1800", right, but theres people with msi 1070 laptop with stable 1900 and 2000 mhz overclock, how is that possible?
    - Your bios is limited to 2400mhz ram as well ?

Im thinking on go back to the original official vbios, and limit the max boost clock using a program, i dont want to use the chinese vbios, because i will be limited at 1650mhz (if i dont overclock).

    P.S

    @Falkentyne @specialist7

    Can you share with me:

    - 86.04.5B.00.82 official vbios
    - 86.04.5B.00.8A chinese vbios

The chinese Bios has been linked multiple times. It's also on one of the threads you replied to on the MSI forums.
Don't have "82"...where did you see this Bios?

Yes, i found the chinese here: https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=281873.0

As i said before, MSI installed this vbios 86.04.5B.00.82 (1443mhz limit) on my laptop to fix the problem, they did the same with others.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------

Feedback from the chinese 8A vbios from users with "defective" 1070 :

"While I don't like using 3rd party vbios I have to say it's almost rock solid - the only issue is a tiny stutter that happens randomly. Very minor but still..."

    "hello , i got crash on my gt72vr....273. 120hertz, g-synch
who know where the problem come from ?
i did flash this bios, don t know if i did rig"

"Hello, i'm trying this vBios and at this time it work good on my GT72VR-6RE

One crash in Max turbo settings (+200/+350).
No crash on Default Turbo settings (+100/+200)
No crash on Sport mode (i will use it i think, and update if something change)

When i'm not gaming i use Comfort Mode to avoid a little coil whine.

    Thanks a lot !!!!!"

"Well, with this Vbios i'm freezing while playing Hitman :/.
I'm gonna try some other games."

"I say near flawless because I noticed a few things but it might be me:
    1. There is a small lag of 1-2 frames between when the GPU needs power and when the GPU actually gets power. Not a big deal/ isn't intrusive.
    2. I don't seem to be able to idle my GPU but this could be caused by something else. My GPU will not go below 1445MHz which is annoying when you're on battery.
    3. Dragon Center Shift seems to work better than before. My shift never did seem to do much before but now they actually change the performance rather distinctly.

Dragon Center Shift will give me the following options:
Turbo: Tested +100/+200 MHz on GPU and is stable. This gets my GPU to 1745 max boost, 4207 on memory, and CPU at 3.1GHz.
You can probably go up to 1845MHz without crashing since this vbios seems way more stable.
Sport: GPU at 1445-1645/4007 MHz and CPU at 3.1GHz. This means both GPU and CPU are boosting as they should be.
Comfort: GPU at 1445-1645/4007 MHz and CPU at 2.6GHz, however, CPU will boost if needed.
ECO: GPU at 1445/810 MHz and CPU at 1.2GHz."

    --------------------------

    Conclusion:

Does this chinese vbios really works 100% with "defective" 1070 gpus?

Maybe you guys @Falkentyne and @specialist7, dont detect anything with chinese vbios because you are using a "good" 1070 gpu ?

-Well MSI does something but on a closed/individual level. We don't really see very many vbios fixes officially released from them unless its on a world wide scale. So either they will send a vbios fix for that particular person or they will patch up the unit if its sent in to them.
-The table is just an example of how GPU Boost works, it scales certain voltage with frequencies but this is the same value with everyone, and its not like we can manually control voltage either.
    -
-Thats the theory on doing negative clocks under MSI Afterburner, haven't really tested too much on this and for those people I just recommend using the other vbios.
-I have not seen an MSI laptop sustain 2000MHz as in keep it at that range and play games, it gets too hot and will need to keep fans on turbo or something, it will also hit a power limit cap if using the stock 230W PSU. On my GPU monitor it will hit 2GHz at some point but it wont stay there, either power limit or temperature will eventually hit.
-For testing purposes I only do +500.. I could possibly hit +600 but won't be stable on the Samsung RAM.

    Thanks for the reply.

    Hey,

Are you using default vbios on your laptop?

Do you have any crash/reboot while playing games?

    Wait
Are you saying if you put a 330W PSU (instead of a 230W) in a GT73VR that has a GTX 1070 (not 1080), the GPU power limit would somehow increase?
I can get a 330W Delta PSU from an ebay seller who gets official MSI parts....

I have not tested it and I don't know if the power limits are hardlocked but I know the 230W PSU limits the GT73VR when both the CPU and GPU are overclocked.

I am definitely going to buy the 330W brick when I go to US in couple of months, just for future proofing if anything. There might be a point in future where you stumble upon a mxm 1080 on ebay so bigger brick comes in handy :D .

So I got to know that MSI does not cover India in the global warranty program. Now I am having second thoughts about the whole thing. I was getting 1 year warranty, how much do you guys think will I need it? Should I still go without it or get something else

I don't think anyone would dare say, because murphy's law will always come in play.

If you're concerned, I'd recommend getting from a company like www.hidevolution.com/.

Talk to either @Ted@HIDevolution or @Donald@HIDevolution regarding warranty options. They say they have a global warranty service at extra charge to the countries they ship too, so they would have to say if India is covered.

Warranty is like insurance, you get it for piece of mind and hope you never need it. Also your adeptness with hardware and software will determine your overall dependency on warranty services.

Yeah, I've been using Intel XTU since I got this laptop. I just set the CPU clocks to 2.4 - 2.8 Ghz and that does it. But what I wanted to have was for it to go back to when I'll just set DGC to Eco or Comfort, it'll automatically just hovers around 1.8 Ghz - 2.8 Ghz.

First I would check my ram for any problems. Use these instructions for Windows memory diagnostic.

Have you updated to the creators edition of windows 10 lately? You may have to do a clean install to cure the little bugs. I started having BSOD's with the creators until I did a clean install.

I'm going to download a copy of windows 10 so I can clean install the creator update when I get my machine back from RMA.

I can't remember, do these come with home or pro? I'm pretty sure it was W10 Home 64...

You could order either one you wanted. I think the default is home, but it depends on who you got it from. Do you have your receipt with detail of the parts?
