Thanks man, yes Phoenix has been a gold mine of knowledge in deciding to pull the trigger. Guess I should double-check what drivers I have at the moment, I would expect atleast recent preinstalled drivers on a new laptop lol

Does anyone know if they built any GT73VR 6RE SLI 1070 laptops in 2017 or where they all built in 2016? The reason I ask is that Newegg only offers replacement on this model laptop and wont issue a refund. If they made them in 2017 I might be able to specify a serial number when asking for replacement, but that wouldn't be an option if they only made them in 2016. If that was the case it wouldn't make sense to replace with another laptop that more than likely would have the same GPU's with the same problems. Damn...I am so upset right now. I regret buying this damn thing. A ton of money spent on a laptop that they knew had a defect right from the factory. I should have kept my Alienware...

I'd assume so. Across various sites I was looking at to purchase the 7RF. for only $130/£100 more I could get the SLI 4k Skylake version, it seems that no resellers can get rid of them and the 'new' SLIs have pretty bad reviews here...DukeCLR likes this.

More bad news.
My GT73VR 6RE is now white / black screening even just sitting at the desktop.
Edit: at stock GPU speeds.
Edit 2: this might have been caused by a driver crash when it was overclocked, and prior to a reboot? I've never had that issue like this with Pascal before, yet we are talking about a laptop and not a desktop configuration,Last edited: Jul 2, 2017DukeCLR likes this. -

Anyone else's screen flicker for a few seconds after the monitor wakes from a sleep mode - not the computer in sleep mode, just the monitor. The brightness is turned up to 100%.
The video output gets dimmer after the flickering, and it's not the night light mode.
I don't remember this happening before I sent this in for repairs, and I'm wondering if it's indicative of problems to come.DukeCLR likes this. -
I've had that on new laptops before, eventually it goes away.
Until then don't stop gaming - keep the fans busy

And I'm back to no video out.
I put the laptop to sleep, woke it up an hour later and got an all white screen. Had to hard reboot, and now there's no video out. I don't even see the backlight come on.
I tried a CMOS clear - no joy. This white screen then no video out happened prior to this laptop being "repaired" at their depot, so they didn't actually repair anything.
Looks like I'm out a laptop again for another month. Happy, happy. Joy, joy. Maybe they will deign to fix it for real this time?
Edit: Let it sit powered off for a bit and cooled off (In both a literal and figurative sense), then I tried resetting the CMOS again - this time video came back. It's a damned roller coaster with this thing! Will it work or won't it? Pins and frikken needles...Last edited: Jul 3, 2017DukeCLR likes this. -

Newegg has had a rebate going for this model, and even though only Newegg sells this model once you remove the UPC they can't tell who sold it. So, I'm stuck with getting this repaired.
I'll grab HWinfo and check this out.

Just got off the phone with MSI USA. My shiny new overly expensive defective gaming laptop will be taking a trip across country. They quoted 10-30 business days not including shipping for RMA service. That is insane. I went from loving my new laptop to wishing I had kept the Alienware...
-
OK...I think I figured it out. Our laptops have become self aware. I honestly think that my laptop heard me when I called for the RMA with MSI USA. Prior to making the call, I could not complete a single pass of 3DMARK Ice Storm even on stock settings. Now I can run it all day long with stock or overclocked settings. I did have one crash when I pushed everything to max in Dragon Center (+200 Core, +350 Vram, CPU at 42), but it only happened once and I was able to run at those settings several times after. My score on Ice Storm running stock is about 126,000 on average. My best score was 174,384 with overclock via Dragon Center, but my average is about 170,000. That works for me. I have been running it all day on and off to make sure it is stable. I have an open RMA that I think I might cancel if this keeps up.
I honestly don't know exactly how or why it has become stable, but here is a list of what I did prior to the miracle.
- I updated the BIOS to version E17A1IMS.10C
- I updated the VBIOS to version 86.04.56.00.3A
- I performed an EC Firmware reset / cleared CMOS
- I used IOBit Uninstaller to remove all traces of the NVIDIA drivers/etc.
- I installed NVIDIA drivers version 384.76
I'm sure that one of those must have been what appears (knock on wood) to have fixed my issue, but what has me baffled is why it didn't fix it right away. I ran the benchmark test all night trying to see if I could find a fix. I wanted to be sure that it was the GPUs that were the issue and not something else before I made the call to MSI. Nothing seemed to help so this morning I called them and got the RMA. It was right after I made the call that the issue seems to have gone away. I am not complaining...just really baffled.
For those that want more detail...I ran GPU-Z and logged the info so I could see exactly what was happening during all of the runs. I was afraid the VBIOS I used might have locked the GPU at 1400 or something. That doesn't appear to be the case. It ran from about 1442 on up to about 1847 with a very rare 1900 or so depending on what overclock I had. GPU temps stayed mostly in the 50's with a max of 63. The fans worked great and never maxed out. Was actually pretty quiet.
Well...I am not ready to call it fixed, but if nothing changes by Wednesday I am going to call and cancel the RMA. My laptop is performing perfectly and I am very happy with the numbers I am getting in games and on benchmarks. If any of you have any questions about what I did, please feel free to ask. For those in the USA...have a happy fourth of July. -
Please test it a few more days to see if the pc still crashes
I'll have to try this tonight.

I just ran every 3DMARK test again to verify. Really happy with results. I am going to reboot a few more times and keep running tests. I have also played several games with no issues. Fingers crossed.
Oh...just be sure to disable G-sync and V-sync prior to running the Ice Storm test just to rule that out as possible issue for crashing. Good luck.Last edited: Jul 3, 2017 -
What different Vbios for GT73VR 425
Vbios 86.04.56.00.3C
Or
Vbios 86.04.56.00.3A? -
3C → 1080 GTX
3A → 1070 GTX -
Has anyone had any problem with intel xtu that doesn't maintain the assigned values? The default setting for Turbo Boost Power Time Windows is 28 seconds but mine always stays at 1 second. I have tried to change it several times but it always change itself to 1 second after reboot.

How do you boot windows from the built in MSI flash drive SD slot?
I installed windows on a 32 GB flash drive and it can't seem to boot from it in Bios
-
Well that settles it. I just scored a 9640 on Time Spy using Dragon Center. I used advanced search to compare it to all i7-7820HK and i7-7920HQ laptops running 1070 SLI and my score was higher than all of them. I also did a search against all 1070 SLI laptops regardless of CPU and I ranked #30 out of 14,783. I have no idea what I am doing, but I am having a blast and think I have fallen back in love with my Titan.
I went with the 6th generation i7-6820HK to save a little $$$ compared to the 7th gen i7. I am happy to see I didn't give up much if any performance. I think $2000.00 for this beast (with free backpack and journal) was a great deal.

No I made bootable media by using the creation tool to make a windows 10 ISO.
(tl;dr: instead of making a DVD i made a flash drive of it).
I got it to boot by using a USB SD drive reader. I can't use the INTERNAL SD card slot to boot it. That's what I was asking. -
I was having freezing, crashing to desktop and random restarts. I never had any white screen issues and for the last day or so I have been rock steady with no issues at all. I have been beating the crap out of this thing trying to get it to crash, but no luck. I hope you get yours figured out. They are great when they work.Last edited: Jul 4, 2017

LOL, you're doing everything you can to make it crash?
-
I have an open RMA with MSI USA. I am testing the laptop to make sure the issue is fixed/corrected before I cancel the RMA. I did not want to cancel it to only have to re-open it again if the laptop was still crashing. As of now it is working perfectly. If you know a way of verifying that the issue is resolved without actually testing the laptop...please let me know. Would have saved me a lot of time and effort...lol.

Continue doing what you're doing but don't force it to the point where you might fry something inside. If that'll happen, I don't think you can still RMA your laptop bud. Good for you having no more crashes. Keep it up.

No worries. I am being careful with her. I am only using Dragon Center to do any overclocking. I am staying away from playing with voltage or really pushing the clocks. Just making sure she is stable at stock speeds and up to the +200 core that DC allows. She is running cool and barely broke a sweat.

I mean exactly...what was it doing before, when it was crashing?
Did you update the Bios on the video cards to the "8A" bios?
Was that it?

That's the problem.
I read all of your posts.
You went from "i have no problems with my laptop; I'm happy with my purchase" to a sudden 180 out of nowhere "I can't complete a pass of ice storm without crashing." This is completely illogical, after you said you had no problems, then suddenly you wanted an RMA out of nowhere, and had problems, and then suddenly you did 4 things and your problems disappeared again.
How is a person supposed to follow what's going on when you do complete 180's with a disjointed type of post like that?
I also take it that you have an SLI system rather than single card.DukeCLR, Papusan and Spartan@HIDevolution like this. -
Here is a cliff notes version of my experience...
- I purchased the laptop shown below in my Sig. about 2 weeks ago.
- It worked great for the first few days of use. I played a game or two of Doom and the Division. I had no issues. I was very pleased so I posted about it.
- I read some posts by other users having issues with the 1070 SLI setup
- I ran the tests and games listed by these same users having problems to determine if my laptop suffered from the same issues seeing as how I have the dreaded 08/16 build date.
- Sure as s%$t I had the same issues as everyone else (see thread "1070 laptop: GT73VR, GT62VR, GT72VR reboot/crash problem" for more details)
- I tried all known fixes and they did not seem to help. Seeing as how the laptop was only a few days old I tried to return it, but not an option so I called MSI and requested RMA.
- Next day while getting laptop ready to ship to MSI the problem seems to have fixed itself and has run perfectly since.
- I made post #7515 on page 752 explaining what had happened and what I had done to try and fix it. Im sure one or more of the things I did is what ultimately corrected the issue. I posted the info thinking that it might help someone else that is having the same problem.
EDIT: I edited my post to remove the sarcasm. I apologize for that, but I felt I was being insulted in the previous post for no reason so I reacted. I have reached out to Falkentyne in a private conversation, but received no response. I am over it and moving on.

Laptops don't magically fix themselves. When flashing a Bios, (including the 8A Bios), you have to actually POWER OFF and unplug the laptop afterwards, for the bios to take effect. I found this out when I flashed the 8A Bios to test it and it was still boosting above 2000 mhz.
I also don't appreciate you insulting me or my intelligence. I am a national LIFE chess master with an Elo of 2221. I have enough intelligence to go around. I wanted to help you. Now I won't help you anymore.Spartan@HIDevolution likes this. -

Hey guys - just tried 2X monitors and am having a no-go. I have one running via HDMI (Benq 2560*1440) and when I plug in the other via mini displayport (monoprice 2560*1440) via an adapter, it comes on properly, but shuts off the HDMI. If I unplug the DP, the HDMI comes on. Unplug the HDMI, the DP comes on. Seems like it only will keep one up at a time. Cables are known good and have been in use for some time. Anyone have a solution?

I m using 2x monitors, one via HDMI and other via DP, both working without any problem since day one, both in extended mode, you may need to check windows display setting and display setting in nvidia control panel.
Edit: I'm using supporting cables, no 3rd party adopter.DukeCLR, BanditBuzz and dma550 like this. -
ok, that was it, needed an adjustment also inside the Nvidia control center. It was weird, it kept reverting but now it's good. Thank you!

They are insanely fast when they do work.
I just got off the phone with MSI's tech support, and I'm sending it back again for repairs. Thankfully they are supplying a shipping label gratis, which helps me no be so pissed (only a little).
Funny enough, the white screen / no video out was recoverable with the 1443MHz VBIOS - just put the laptop to sleep and wake it UP. BAM, video out. With the latest official VBIOS off of MSI's website, I'd get the same white screen then no video out on reboot, but video would not come back.
In the past, clearing the EC firmware didn't help, but this time it did (with the 3A official VBIOS). It was quite a shock that it did help this time when several CMOS resets failed to help.
So, my laptop might have more than just a pair of faulty 1070s? Who knows. I'm really hoping that they'll replace the 1070s with the revision 1.2 cards and this won't be an issue any longer.BanditBuzz and hmscott like this. -
I hope that they can get you all squared away. I know it can get pretty emotional when you spend crazy $$$ for something that does not work. I am happy to hear that they are flippig the bill on the shipping. They seemed really cool when I spoke with them. Keep us posted.
Not sure how much the version 1.2 cards help. I have been looking at the 3DMARK benchmarks for Time Spy and it looks like the newer model 7th Gen MSI laptops are not getting the same performance as the older 6th gen. My numbers are higher than all of the 7th gen MSI SLI laptops. Most of the numbers that have been recorded by owners with the 6th Gen MSI laptops are also higher. Maybe the v1.2 cards are just clocked lower? No idea, but it was something I found odd. -
How were you able to get them to give you a shipping label? They told me I need to pay to send it back...
Sent from my Nexus 6 using Tapatalk -
When I created my RMA with MSI USA, I asked for one. I explained that I only had the laptop for a little over a week. They issued it no questions asked. I would imagine in the case with Arestavo they are paying shipping because the issue still isn't fixed and he shouldn't have to pay again to ship it.
-
Same as BanditBuzz - the problem manifested itself in less than 12 hours, and that was with the replacement laptop that I got from Newegg (for a no video out right out of the box for the original).
I sent the replacement to them for repairs, and their repairs didn't fix the no video out issue. So I asked them for a shipping label and to actually repair it this time.DukeCLR and BanditBuzz like this. -
If you all wan't to check the GPU's Power Limit aka if v.1.2 cards in newer models is crippled vs. the older model, you can dump Vbios with Nvflash and read this power value with Mobile Pascal TDP Tweaker
Then compare the results afterwards!!
Don't hang the messenger if you being disappointed with the results

If only I could - my laptop just went no video after a cold boot and can't be recovered via CMOS or EC reset.
