I suppose your original is 330W. That in Amazon is just 230W.

Falkentyne Notebook Prophet
That's a no-name PSU. If you want a decent brand, get a Delta from your reseller.
There are also other ways to source Deltas as well, including ebay.
Keep in mind, the 330W Delta will also work just fine on your laptop, even though the EC firmware will prevent more than 230W AC power draw if a GTX 1070 is installed.
To bypass 230W (and to stop all hybrid battery boost under 240W), you can change EC RAM register E3 from 10 to 11, with RW Everything.DukeCLR likes this. -
I picked up a Delta 330W that worked for my GT73VR 6RE as well as my new GT73VR 7RE. It's a legit Delta PSU, and it's over $20 cheaper now than when I bought it in June. Comes with free shipping and a 1 year warranty too - http://lps-gopower.com/lps-ac-adapt...pro-4k479-charger-ac-adapter-330w-p-7022.html
EDIT: The charger is listed as OEM, the AC power cable is from their company and it is a bit on the short side. They shipped mine from Germany to the US which did take a little less than a week to get here, and it was still free shipping via DHL / USPS. Well worth it for $105.Last edited: Dec 16, 2017steberg, Falkentyne and DukeCLR like this. -
Cool, I remember awhile back I was able to find a Delta on Amazon, Ill try that link.

Forgive me for asking this as I'm sure it's already been posted in the almost 900 pages of this thread, but I have some questions re: adding an additional SSD to my GT73VR 7RF Titan Pro model:
- Does it void the warranty?
- Is there a good instructional video / walk-through about it somewhere?
- What are some good recommendations for compatible 1TB+ SSDs right now? Not overly concerned with price.
-
1. Depends on if you have a reseller warranty or just the MSI one. Reseller you have to ask, MSI it won't unless you damage something - then they can deny you warranty repair.
2. Google! (it is simple with a GTX 1080 model) https://www.google.com/search?q=gt7...rome..69i57.3837j0j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8
3. Depends on what form factor and electrical connection you are upgrading. For a standard 2.5" SATA drive (7mm is the max height), the absolute best that you can get is a 4TB SSD, the best bang for the buck is a 2TB SSHD Seagate Firecuda. For m.2 SATA (the third empty slot, next to the two filled m.2 NVME slots) the WD Blue 1TB is good with a 2TB coming in the near future. For m.2 NVME it's a toss up (because crazy transfer speeds mean nothing for gamers), but most folks gravitate towards the 960 EVO for the 1TB size, or even the 2TB 960 Pro if money is truly no obstacle.
EDIT: You likely know, but you have a total of (4) drive slots in the laptop. (2) m.2 NVME drives in "SuperRaid 4" that your operating system is installed on, (1) m.2 SATA slot that is empty unless you had your reseller install one (the screw is there, but there isn't a thermal pad like the NVME drives have), and (1) 2.5" SATA slot that has a 1TB 7200RPM drive installed unless you had your reseller remove it or install a different drive.Last edited: Dec 17, 2017Vasudev likes this. -
Great info, Arestavo; thank you! +Rep.
Forgive my ignorance for not knowing my storage slot configuration (because like you said; as a a gamer, my storage didn't mean much to me - I just knew it met my then-current needs), but my 7RF rig came stock from MSI; I have a 256GB SSD and a 1TB (SATA) 7200 RPM. My problem is that my games are installed on the small SSD, and I'm having to manage storage often to install new, larger games. I'd ideally like to install one (1) additional ~2TB or larger SSD onto which I would migrate all game data (so, not replacing my existing SATA drive or SSD).
For the above situation, what drive(s) would you recommend?
Thanks again! -
Falkentyne Notebook Prophet
What's your budget?
Can you afford a 1TB SSD?
I'd replace the 256GB SSD with a 1 TB NVME drive if you can afford it.
Otherwise you can buy this drive for 4 TB:
https://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Barracuda-2-5-Inch-Internal-ST4000LM024/dp/B01LZMUNGR/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1513534130&sr=8-2&keywords=Seagate+4tb+2.5"
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002P6PDU4/ref=ox_sc_sfl_title_5?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A1UCLUF7KW7AYG
but you can't use the old original HDD slot because this is too thick; you need the SATA Extension cable and you need to use the 'empty' video card space slot (requires minor modification). -
What you think of as (1) 256GB SSD is actually (2) 128 GB drives striped together -it's what MSI calls their "Super Raid 4" and it's just two drives striped together (RAID 0, no redundancy). They are the drives taking up your (2) m.2 NVME slots. If you remove one of the drives to make room for a larger m.2 NVME drive, it will break the RAID 0 and you will have to reinstall Windows and anything else that was on it.
If you want fast storage for games, right now your best bet is a 1TB m.2 SATA drive for your free m.2 SATA port - 2TB m.2 SATA drives aren't quite out yet as far as I know. You can also replace the 1TB spinning drive that is in your (1) 2.5" SATA slot with a 2.5" SSD, and they come in up to 4TB in size. I already linked my recommendations in my earlier post (just click the blue text). These are what I would consider the best options for your situation, but the decision is yours to make. -

Didn't you tell us a long time ago that fast boot will always be forcibly disabled on unlocked SKU's, for CPU mulitplier overrides to be able to work?
I never got the option to ever stay enabled on GT73. It stayed enabled on the GT72VR, when windows could boot in 6 seconds but that had a 7700HQ.

How do you get to see the MSI VGA MODE option in your UEFI BIOS?
I have the same computer with the same BIOS version and that option is not available to me (among others).
Why did you delete the screen capture of your BIOS, does it include sensitive information? -
Falkentyne Notebook Prophet
Apparently, this screen capture contains an 'option' which doesn't seem to exist.
I checked with some of the chinese users. This option seemed to exist on the GT72, POSSIBLY the GT70 and possibly the very earliest GT73VR Bios. However this is not present in the APTIO capsule of the earliest released Bios that I can even find (E17A1IMS.105). if there is an earlier version, I sure don't know of it and it isn't named the same if it is on the MSI page somewhere). And I spent literally an entire WEEK trying to find it and experimenting with it. (trying to make the option somehow appear in my own bios, by trying various combinations of the "unlock" code for the hidden menus, unlocking and relocking them repeatedly, and entering options randomly and trying random FN keypresses with random other keypresses. And I could not find it (the two "mythical" settings for hybrid power). And I was upset. Therefore it doesn't exist. Unless someone proves me wrong. And I need this option.
And the other options everyone knows about now; most of the same options are shown in Mr Fox's video on the 16L13 Evoc F3 MSI laptop, with minor differences (VGA mode isn't there).
That's just the MUX switch. This is also controlled (the GPU button, controlled by MSI SCM) by EC RAM register F1 (done by using RWEverything). I think 02 switches it to iGPU and 06 to dGPU but I can't be bothered messing with that cuz using the EC RAM is unreliable.
The "Hypothetical" Options were "Hybrid Power Enabled/Disabled" and "Battery Voltage" or "Battery threshold" or something. But they are NOT in the APTIO capsule and I do NOT think they even exist on the GT73VR, unless there is a bios version LOWER than E17A1IMS.105 that I can examine.
You can even unlock your own Bios manually, set every option to Supervisor, and you still won't have access to those "mythical" values of Hybrid Power and Battery Voltage / Threshold.
All you have to do is use FPTW64.exe -d bios.bin -bios to dump your aptio capsule, edit it with AMIBCP and set all options you want unhidden to Supervisor, then reflash it again. But the reflashing will fail unless the option Bios Lock is disabled. Disabling that is the hard part. Sirgeorge posted a guide on how to do it, but it's complicated. You need several special tools (he uploaded them somewhere in an old post), you need to download the MSI official Bios, open that with the tools, then follow the instructions to search for Bios Lock, get the GUID key for it, export it, then use some strange boot loader on a USB flash drive, to have RU.exe (i think) write the MSR and set it to disabled in an EFI shell. Only then can your bios dump work.
(UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES DO YOU EVER EDIT THE OFFICIAL DOWNLOADED MSI BIOS WITH AMIBCP AND TRY TO FLASH THAT WITH FPTW64--THIS WILL CAUSE A BRICK; official bios file contains more than just the APTIO CAPSULE).
The key combo is available on the chinese baidu hardware site thread in one of the posts. I'm not going to post it here. You can find it if you know what to look for.
I would paypal anyone here a nice fat $50 INSTANTLY if someone knew how to make the option "Hybrid Power enabled/disabled" and Battery Voltage / Battery Threshold (whatever it is called) appear, because I don't think it exists, period. I'm more OCD than almost anyone in this forum (besides iunlock) and if I can't find it, no one can.Last edited: Dec 18, 2017Vistar Shook and Paloseco like this. -
On the MSI GT73VR:
Could be possible to have both Intel and Nvidia graphics cards at the same time in Device Manager -> Display adapters?
Something similar to what happens on the Dell XPS 9550.
That way I would have 2 graphics cards on the operating system.Last edited: Dec 18, 2017 -

Yes you can but the intel drivers won't load and the intel gpu is inactive. It may be possible to access it in Linux. Not in windows.
You can NOT have the Nvidia GPU dormant (inactive) with the intel iGPU as primary.
You can set up this useless configuration by enabling the iGPU under system agent, from auto to (Enabled), when the dGPU is already active. (requires unlocked Bios).Paloseco and Vistar Shook like this. -

I'm also very hyped with that, the problem is that will be expensive as hell. The current MSi GT73VR with 7820HK and GTX 1080 is around 4000/5000 euros, depending on ram configuration and ssd. You can get the 6700HQ for €2000.

Does GT73 use the seam between keyboard buttons as auxiliary intake? Like many other laptops.
If I use a keyboard cover, will that affect the cooling system?(even by a little bit) -
I don't think a keyboard cover will have any effect to cooling, because the air intake are on the sides and the air exhaust on the back.
-
Some laptops use seam between keyboard buttons as auxiliary intake, so a keyboard cover will jam these auxiliary intakes. I am not sure whether GT73 is one of them.

Here importing a computer from the US to europe has a 23% customs import tax on the entire cost (price+shipping+insurance) so not a great deal.
Also, Americans are worse for warranty because there's only 1 year warranty while in Europe it's two. -
GT73VR with 7820HK and GTX 1080 starts from €3000 here - but the availability just now is nearly zero - a couple of months ago there was a €2600 offer. Why I didn't cath it...Now just waiting...
-
The next generation Intel CPU's will release soon after the new year, and new MSI models will also release, so maybe you can catch the outgoing model for a nice discount? Often the most desirable top models are all sold out at the transition point to the new models, none available to discount.

That's the problem - no stock left in this land (Finland), some in Sweden I believe (just hunting for 7RF). No idea which models are coming in next, after Xmas. 7RE is available but I don't care (so far).

That's a great laptop, but he can save $200 and get the i7 7820HK unlocked CPU with the Pro-866 model, the Pro-865 has the locked 7700HQ - No OC.
I was able to get the Pro-866 7820HK stable at 4.5ghz OC using ROG Gaming Center to get it to 4.2ghz (apparently 4.1ghz now) then set Intel XTU to set multipliers on all 4 cores to 45x.
It's a nice boost and a lower price, and you'll likely want to improve the storage anyway so the larger stock storage and memory in the Pro-865 won't really make any difference overall. Better to get the 7820HK CPU, as you can't upgrade that later
