permanently disabled the windows update, not gona do any update until see a proper solution which not compromise the system performance in anyway Or no more update from this point onward....

Intel MEI v 11.7.0.1045 already installed, I re enabled SST in BIOS (by default it was disabled), let's see how system will perform or may be I need to fresh install the windows or decreased the number of opened chrome tabs....

I get the same thing switching from my TV to my laptop screen. open the Nvidia control panel (right click on desktop), go to adjust desktop color settings, scroll down to the bottom and just move the vibrancy bar and then cancel out, as soon as you move the bar it's like it remembers the settings lol

So I just found out about this spectre and meltdown stuff. I see on MSI they have a security patch (I'm assuming that is for the spectre/meltdown problem?)

My windows already updated but should I install the "intel ME FW update tool" from MSI?

    Hi,

I having a very weird problem. I'm overclocking my MSI GT73VR-7RE to 4.2 in the BIOS, not using Dragon Center and I didnt install it so far. The weird thing is that everything runs fine, everything is stable, and sometimes, the BIOS just goes to the default 3.9Ghz without anything happened. I only detected that by looking on CPU-Z or HWINFO. Then I go back in the BIOS, restore my profile with 4.2 OC settings, and so on..
    What is this happening?

    @Phoenix

bro, you installed the MS update ? you already installed the FW from MSI site so, if you installed the recent windows updates which fixes the bug, what's the laptop performance....?

didn't measure it benchmarks wise but it feels less snappier. I know my machine very well. It's not the same. It's like you downgraded your CPU by a few clocks and everything has a bit of a lag to it compared to before.

OR it could be the fact that I changed my RAID 0 from 128K stripe size to 16K as suggest by @ole!!! Next time I format, I'll go back to 128K and see if the snappiness goes back to normal

I update the FW but not updated the patch yet, win updates disabled permanently....

    Game Behavior: 4.0GHZ Turbo Mode

Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus: Ultra high settings, level load smoothly but right after the level starts, game shutter (stuck) first few seconds after that no problem

    Software Behavior: 4.0GHZ Turbo Mode

Playing 1080p video full or half screen on left external display, middle display as desktop, right display load PS CSS 12.0, No shuttering in video, PS load smoothly but when load a file (no matter the size or type of file), video shutter (stuck) on left external display while file loading...

you mentioned lag, I thought my mouse left click button is faulty cause sometime I have to click twice on cross to close a window, so it's not mouse it's a lag or delay between the click and movement of the mouse cursor.....

I didn't pay for this....

I'm thinking to re-install the windows, may be tomorrow, will post back after fresh installation result...damn have to install all libs again....

Note: above mentioned software / game behavior little better after enabling SST from BIOS but shutter still happen, less as compare to SST disable.

mouse lag is caused by Intel SGX Extension, set that to disabled in the BIOS and you won't have any mouse lag. The default value is software controlled. You should know how to find this setting ;)

Hi Guys, need help here since this is about BIOS and all. Might be noobish for the pros with mobos and all.

My laptop was originally a 6RE since i have the 1070, i7 6820hk but when my motherboard broke and MSI changed it, per MSI help desk it became a 6RF with the same BIOS Version. only the motherboard was changed, I am still on 1070, i7 6820HK.

I am currently using the 8A Vbios since if you guys remember there were problems with it the 6RE gtx 1070, 2016 releases using the 3A vbios bec of boost clocks etc.. I was wondering if changing the motherboard to a new one would make the problem disappear thats why i wanted to go back to the 3A Vbios to try it out. I also checked the 6RF VBIOS on MSI support which was 3C.

Is it okay to go back to the 3A VBIOS? can I use the 3C VBIOS?

    @Falkentyne @specialist7

Note: I asked @Zoltan@HIDevolution about this and he said it might be a typo during the update on the part of the repairman that's why it became a 6RF.

My question still stands, Please enlighten me :notworthy: :notworthy: :biglaugh: :biglaugh:

You need version 1.2 of MSI 1070 video card. (I know nothing about 1.1).
You need to precisely ask them for that. If you find someone who actually knows what you are talking about...good luck with that for sure.

v1.0 version has the crash bug at vcore 1.013+

If you check both 6RF and 6RE support pages, compare both BIOS and EC firmwares, you will notice that both model have same versions, only difference between 6RF and 6RE is GPU (VBIOS), 6RF has 1080 (3C) where 6RE has 1070 (3A), mobo is same unless you have SLI model

You cannot use 3C vBIOS it's only for GTX1080, flashing it on GTX1070 will definitely brick the card. so I agree with @Zoltan@HIDevolution it might be a typo during the update or repair process

Thanks! @Shehary that was very informative. now I realize it its a way way waaaay too noob question for @specialist7 lol Thanks again

EC means nothing for security. Controls fans and power limits and throttling and some hotkey functions.

Is it worth getting the intel ME FW from the msi site?

I was eventually going to update the EC with the color depth fix update and if the intel ME FW is worth getting then I'll update the EC too.

thx i meant performance drop after latest update from microsoft due to to that two bugs, so if EC is not necessary i leave it without it. also i noticed that after bios update my cores goes up to 3.9hhz which before i was only on 3.5ghz on all cores in max performance mode i never paid attention to it.

I give it a try in some games and see if me fw affected permormance in gaming.

i tried some games like ac origins no performance drop but what concers me i have much higher temps like 4-5 degree up in gaming and in stability test aida i went up to 97 degree on auto fans never like that before it was max 87 on auto fans so dont know if thats something related to bios or not or me fw @Phoenix what do you think? even cooler boost dont help still up to 90 i was before max on 87 degree with 30a bios and older intel drivers

Isn't the Intel vulnerability being patched through a Windows update?

Depends on which Intel vulnerability, at the moment there are many......the one they are talking about is from a while back, the Intel ME vulnerability which is patched with a firmware update. The current meltdown vulnerability is being somewhat patched by the windows update, but will require a firmware update as well from the vendor down the road.

You do not want to do that.
The power buttons and side buttons may be 'part' of the keyboard.

    SGX Extension disabled.

    Following has been discussed before;
In DGC if Turbo Mode Active, CPU @ 4.0, every time reboot or cold boot, CPU clock reset to 3.5 but Turbo Mode still active, to change the CPU back to 4.0 have to switch the mode between Sport / Turbo, will set the clock back to 4.0

    Reason Found:
RAM Clock set on 2400mhz in BIOS causing it, if RAM Clock set at 2133mhz, after reboot or cold boot, in DGC CPU clock remain at 4.0 if Turbo Mode active.

    Cause:
    unknown

    Solution:
Change the RAM clock to 2133mhz or default.

Still working on to find the work around with 2400mhz, if anybody knows, please share.

Do you have FastBoot enabled in the BIOS? That skips the RAM tests, and it sounds like your memory isn't reliably working at 2400mhz, but works reliably and passes the test at 2133mhz.

I heard some GT73 models might not allow Fastboot to be Enabled- it gets reset in between boots back to Disabled.

I think you found the problem, now either live with 2133mhz memory, or get new memory... you could try swapping around SODIMM's to see if that helps make them stable at 2400mhz. Do you have 2 or 4 of them?

Correction: RAM speed 2133mhz not 2300mhz (typo mistake, last post corrected)

Fast boot disabled and if enabled it doesn't stick and reset.

Total 4 RAM sticks and I had my doubts on bottom side of 2 sticks, after last CPU re-paste I put back the RAM sticks (battery was also removed), battery plugged in, laptop refused to boot, stuck on black screen, Power button BIOS reset didn't work, have to remove both the RAM sticks (while battery plugged in) and laptop boot and BIOS reset itself. inserted the RAM sticks back and laptop boot normally.

It's tough to get to all 4 slots, but maybe try pulling the 2 you can reach and see if the other 2 can POST reliably at 2400mhz, and then add 1 of the other 2, and then finally the last one. Or, swap the 2 you can reach around with each other first... or continue to enjoy 2133mhz :)

you can't enable Fast Boot on a machine with an HK overclockable CPU. If you disable the overclocking feature completely in BIOS, The Fast Boot settings stick to enabled or disabled whatever you set it just fine. The moment you enable the overclocking feature, Fast Boot gets disabled when you save and exit. Reason being according to MSI HQ is because on an overclockable CPU the motherboard has to reinitialize the overclocking parameters every startup and thus cannot use Fast Boot and skip them.

I stopped using Dragon Center after I got sick and tired of it settings my VR Current Limit to Auto randomly and limiting me to a 4,1 GHz overclock. Now my settings stick and never change. no XTU or DGC installed, all done through BIOS

@Shehary Are all four of your RAM Sticks the exact same brand? They must be the same brand!
    4x8GB Kingston HyperX ?

Bios has RAM multipliers up to 4133 mhz....wonder if anything past 2667 mhz will work...HIDevolution only offers up to 2666 mhz, but that's on the kaby lake model (mainboard is version 1.1 according to Baidu; skylake is 1.0).

I think better first run memtest and see if any RAM stick test failed, easier to get rid of bad egg and if test passes, it will narrow it down to that Dragon Center is causing the problem

Reason: In Bios I just changed the RAM speed back to 2400mhz and after reboot in DGC 4.0 Turbo value sticks and no issue...

Strangely enough, seating and position can make a difference, so clean the "fingers" with a gum eraser to get the contacts clean, then do a solid angled seating of the SODIMM in the socket.

This has solved a surprising number of flaky RAM - sometimes it doesn't work, but moving them around into different socket positions does.

Glad to hear it's working now :)

Made a little BIOS unlocking guide here:
MSI GT73VR BIOS: unlock, mod, factory restore, clear CMOS and prevent common issues

I've noticed that if you set Internal Graphics to enabled and set you set the VGA MODE to IGPU you won't be able to boot the computer, you have to perform a CMOS reset. Don't change for any parameter the Failsafe and Optimal values, just leave them by default or even the CMOS reset won't work.

    I've never encountered that issue.
What Bios version are you running?

I intentionally enabled Internal Graphics because there was a baidu post mentioning that having Internal Graphics enabled and then setting Rc6 Render Standby to disabled can ''lower" the battery leech drain hybrid rate at high loads. I could see no difference on the kaby lake version (mainboard version 1.1). Maybe it made a difference on skylake (mainboard version 1.0) with skylake version Bios (the skylake version bios has the AMT Settings field, kabylake doesn't; not sure if you can unlock it, it's worthless anyway). But I tested it. The user noticed a big reduction in "battery drain rate" in witcher 3 after doing this on a GT73VR 6RF (Skylake - 6820HK) with a GTX 1080. It went from 10% battery drain in 1 hour to 3%. However I could see no difference with a 195W TDP GTX 1070 (close enough to stock 1080) when doing this, but I have the Kaby Lake version.

Enabling "internal graphics" DOES cause a (quick) boot loop once, though. If yours fails to POST when you do this, it could be a problem with your RAM. Are you using 32 GB? 16 GB? 2 RAM Dimms? 4 RAM Dimms?

Do you know how to do a CMOS reset?
It's holding down the power button for 45 seconds, then releasing it. Then it takes TWO MINUTES for a CMOS reset to work. You must first wait 60 seconds (after releasing the power button). Then the power LED Light will turn off and on. Then you need to wait another 60 seconds. Then the MSI logo will appear and then disappear and the system will boot loop 4 or 5 times until it's satisfied.

The exact same method for unlocking Bios on 6RE, 6RF, 7RE, 7RF.
The only DIFFERENCE is the GUID key. You still search for Bios lock. Just the key will be different. It could also be different even on different bios versions. That's why we tell you to search for Bios lock with the "official" MSI bios version matching the Bios you have. So each user may have a slightly different GUID key.

Also enabling Internal graphics on 7RE and 7RF simply causes a quick boot loop, then you get to windows and you can see the Intel iGPU. Windows can't use it and won't activate the drivers. (it MAY be possible to use a third party program to access it for mining or something). Linux can access and directly use it. The Baidu chinese users also had no problem enabling Internal Graphics on 6RE and 6RF. So I don't know what the problem is. To be fair, they used the "Hotkey" method to unlock the Bios, rather than FPTW64.exe, but I SERIOUSLY doubt that matters. I think something is configured strange in @Paloseco 's system.

No change in score for me after updating ME firmware. But then again I used Win-Raid.com's manual method, not MSI's file.

What do you mean? So MSI's FW will have an impact on performance but there is a better way that won't hurt performance? Sorry for the noob question

It probably means your thermal paste degraded and you need to re-paste.

Can you post your maximum core temps after running a stress test, with Throttlestop 8.50 running in the background please? This will help.
Do you have higher core temps on core #1 and #3, instead of #2 and #4? Please post a picture.
