May be BIOS has short term memory loss problem or wanted to be dead sure that It's really you who made the changes.... :twitchy:

.....I have this problem on 6RF with memory speed, If I change it to 2400MHz, it auto change it to 2133Mhz but on 2nd attempt BIOS does save the changes....

    try again.....

Source? I always assumed they would since they already make an LGA 15" but I haven't seen anything about a 17" coming...

I think @D2 Ultima had mentioned it in one of the threads...we were talking about the F5 and the F7 was mentioned...

After reinstalling windows yesterday .. (twice!), I turn it on this morning and immediately get a BSOD.

I think I may have tracked it down to SCM. I'll have to do some more test to be sure.

Nice! Good job. My highest is 18531, but for some reason it didn't validate. Strange eh?

It's my CPU that's the culprit. My highest graphics score combined with a 13K physics would be killer...

Odd yea, the few hundred difference seems to just be background mem usage I guess. Can't beat your Timespy score yet. I'm only optimizing windows and background tasks to be at minimal, I still however have wifi on and antivirus app running. Reckon 19k+ is possible for Firestrike if i use afterburner.

That would be pretty sweet. I think I've hit the limits of this card haha and it has been stressed so much that I think it's starting to loose bolts LOL... Every run that I do seems to be bringing diminishing returns. I had this issue before with a AW with a 1070...it kicked the bucket on me.

Try to reach 19K...that would be huge for this laptop considering that it has a 6820HK. My P775DM3 scratched the 19K mark, but it too had its ceiling due to the inevitable...silicon lottery.

Looking forward to seeing some good results!

Tried a few more times but yea awkward to get the right timings with the core and memory. You need afterburner to fine tune these things. Hopefully you iunlock can give it a few more goes. Try GPU core at +212 and mem at +366. CPU will easily clock at a multiplier of 42.
    Fun

All clear here...and remember, higher doesn't mean better...often times than not you'll get diminishing returns and with micron memory, it's worth being cautious at that altitude as micron isn't the best...however, in the GTX 1080 we have the micron DDR5X ram which seems to be okay, but it's nowhere near as good as Samsung memory chips.

Nice graphics score. As you can see... AW ceo Mr. Azor aka @Alienware-Frank said other OEM's crippled the graphics Power settings, but not in their Alienware BOOKS :D You can see clearly the BGA i7 processor crippling this machine as well... Totally destroying the experience!! Why use socket graphics, but forget the processor? Maybe Mr. Azor should teach MSI to go fully BGA? As well see my reply below...

BGA in any form or shape.... Cpu - Gpu or both damaging the products. Will never be accepted in a laptop, desktop or hybrid

Only way to get that i think is to somehow get the voltage control unlocked, without investigating I assuming a vBios change ideally. Not going down that route though, I don't want to push this GPU to it's death.
@iunlock I notice you get higher GPU scores, what's your max core and mem MHz?

Well I thought it was DC after it giving me the error message about not enough memory because of DC but unfortunately I don't think DC is the problem. I closed DC and ran SC2 and still had the black screen flash which sometimes drops the sound playing through HDMI (only a restart will restore the sound to my knowledge so far). I played for 1h 34min and it black screened 15 times. I monitored everything with MSI afterburner and there is a huge CPU usage spike when it happens and something goes screwy with the voltage. I would normally think it is a hardware problem but seeing you are also having the same problem and demanding games like witcher 3 run no problem at max in sport or turbo mode, leads me to believe it is a driver issue. I searched a for awhile and finally found someone with a similar problem and it was during an nvidia driver update of 350.86 or something (couple years back). Apparently there was an issue with the nvidia driver not handling the voltage changes when the voltage dropped dropped during gameplay of SC2 causing the video driver to crash. I don't know if it is a voltage problem but a driver crash would make sense seeing that every other game runs fine except SC2.

I will try uninstalling DC and see if the problem persists. If it continues then I will assume like I said above that there is a driver issue with SC2.

On a side note, something happened with my function buttons. I haven't changed any settings but now when I use fn+F2, to switch to my TV of course, nothing happens. in fact if I hit it now while typing it actually types "p". All other function keys seem to be working (except F6, I'm not sure what it does though). Luckily I can use the windows 10 project option easily but what the hell? Why does fn+F2 insert "p" now?

Takk. Yea it's a pity to be limited by the CPU, for bench-sakes that is...if this had an LGA, it'd do some serious damage. Especially with a 7700K cruising near 50x.

BTW, this 330w PSU is not enough. Can someone email me a slitter? I have the PSU's but not the adapter.

Is the F7 a rumor? Are they planning on a 17" fully socketed beast? Because if they do come out with it... it will blaze new trails... the GPU's on here are strong.

I'm curious what a power increase on the GPU would even do on the AW1080. We'll just have to wait and see as you know I'll dive heavy into that.

To be fair, when it comes to gaming experience, there is zero difference among the bga or lga laptops/dtr's ...

But of course, we're talking benching here and this GT73VR is great for that.

Do you know of a USB C adapter where I can plug in a delidded 7700K to plug into this machine? Is there enough bandwidth to handle? I should call Dell superior tech support and ask....

Similar to yours...try lowering the Mem....190/350ish... There is definitely not enough juice here and yes there seems to be a limitation at the bios level. Hmmm...

Yea it's worth being careful not to blow a gasket. After all, it's only benching haha...save the miles for the things that matter the most to you like perhaps gaming etc...

For your Q about the USB C adapter... I don't know.

For the answer about BGA vs. LGA... You should have LGA in any laptop, desktop or hybrid regardless for your benching or gaming. A socket i7 can be used to much more than this usage :D The processor crippling this machine. Sorry but so it is  Design, socket graphics or nice keyboard can't defend the machine. It lacks proper cpu powa!! And the unlocked Kaby BGA can't make the situation any better.

Hmm I guess I'll have to delid the USB-C adapter as well for more bandwidth when I find one... (btw people this is a joke haha...we're just joking around....just in case someone does stumble across and thinks this is for real...)

Regarding the socketed goodness, this is why I'm very curious about the F7 if it is true that there will be a 17" beast coming out.

BTW I'll be including a lot of the stuff we're talking about in the review so I'll save the content for that.

    Update:
Takk for the reps! - And yes no worries, I'm a huge lga fan and I can't say the same for bga, but that doesn't mean that I won't run it (bga's) to the ground. :p It has its purpose and it's a fine line of what is acceptable and what is not...Long live socketed beasts..

The rep was intended for talking about all the benefits with LGA in any of your reviews :D Where is the button you can remove the rep? :p Of course BGA processors can have it's benefits... In eg - smartphones, tablet or smaller laptops than 14 inches size :) Or even bigger laptops, but with max price around $250-350 usd.

Haha I know I know and no worries. Trust me. bga is a cancerous tattoo and there is no denying that. But when compared to a lga, this makes the bga a huge under dog by nature.

What is being portrayed here as an accomplishment is the machine itself and no one is denying that the major limitation is the cpu here. That's why I was asking if someone could email both the USB-C lga adapter and the splitter to double up on the 330w's.... I've cleared my inbox already so that there would be enough space.

FYI, I tried reinstalling the BIOS E17A1IMS.308 from MSI's website, when I put the file on a USB Flash Disk or even in the root of C:\ , going into BIOS then initiating the BIOS update then pointing it to that location, it says file size is wrong

There may be a way if you know the previous version number. Other than that you would probably need to put in a ticket to support and see if they can give you a link.
This is the link to the current. You could plug in the numbers from the last version, replacing, maybe, the 12025 in the link or all the numbers. http://download.msi.com/uti_exe/nb/MSI SCM 13.016.12025.zip

just incase you didnt know, the computer itself is the exact same between the re and rf models, its only superficial things like the gpu or ssd/ram/etc that get changed. All firmware and bios things are universal between the 7rf/7re

    @Phoenix

Yeah, just a further note the 6re/6rf can share the same firmware and bios, the 7re/7rf have a different bios as it is a different chipset/cpu etc
HOWEVER, the laptops themselves have the same shell and system (other than the cpu change), meaning the fan firmware and other drivers etc can be shared such as the fan firmware. Me and some others on this forum have had issues with the 6r(e/f) laptops with the 107, but after downloading the 7r(e/f)'s 108 fan firmware it solved our issues.

Rep added! You did it! What was your core and mem MHz? Did you set a 42x CPU multiplier? Nvidia driver on 376.19?
I think I need a reinstall of windows as that's usually the best time to do benchmarking, got way too much stuff on this laptop now :(
Edit: Had a quick look I see you have faster 16gb ddr4 ram? hmm and I see windows anniversary update isn't installed. Don't think i can get to the magic 19k without changing those things first. Would be interesting to see if anyone else on here can hit above 18.5k in firestrike.

You can't install the same BIOS over itself or an older version BIOS with default commands.

So I have been looking at this model for a while now and I may be pushed into making a purchase in the next 24 hours as Amazon is about to charge state tax on purchases in my state now.

Has anyone had the opportunity to use the 7820hk version with the stock paste rather than an upgrade? I was pretty happy with my gt72 unit that had 6820hk with stock paste but it seems these 7820hk chips may run a bit hotter.

stock paste is good on GT73, almost equal to ICD....

yes 7RF with 7820hk runs little hotter but temps can bring down either with LM or Advance Fan Curve....

@Maineiac12 is I think still on stock paste and can give you better insight about temps.....

I had a 7820HK for a week and the temps were high 60s to low 70s on the CPU and 77-78c on the GPU. That was for a 1080, the 1070 would run cooler. Idle temps were in the 40c range. This was using the fans on auto.

There was nothing wrong with my 7820 but I returned it because I found a crazy deal on a leftover 6820HK laptop that I couldn't pass up.

What a nightmare this morning has been. I started having BSOD's again and could only stay in windows a few seconds before it locked up. I tried restoring from the MSI usb and kept getting the error REAGENTC.exe OS False. I deleted the raid and tried install to drive 0. Same thing. Finally 2 hours later, and a lot of cussing, I tried drive 1 and it worked. I guess drive 0 that came with the laptop was failing. I assume none of the scans I did showed a problem because it was in raid 0. #joyofcomputing
