I understand you are depreciated by 2x NVMe PCIe + 1x M.2 SSD (SATA) and 1x 2.5 "SATA HDD. Is there a reason why this Kaby lake machine can't use 3x M.2 NVMe PCIe?
I understand very well that you can't get fully performance in a RAID 0 with 3x M.2 NVMe PCIe. Anyway this Your is a Kaby lake machine and 3 M.2 NVMe PCIe should be supported.

Well I had my first 1.5H game with no black screen!
I changed a lot of stuff though today so it will be hard to narrow down. I downloaded DDU and uninstalled the 378.49 driver (D3 was starting to black screen on regular mobs) so installed 376.33, left everything at default in the control panel, turned off G sync and V sync and I updated the firmware to .108 fom the 7RE (I have a 6RE). It's nice to have another bar for the fan profiles and the sliders work correctly now. So I don't which of these fixed the problem but no black screen whatsoever running in "Extreme" settings in SC2 through hdmi.
Side note: I have better temps at idle now and better gpu temps during gaming. GPU and CPU now sit under 30c at idle (after sitting for awhile). If you are having issues with the DC fan profiles with the 6RE, the 7RE EC firmware .108 fixes the problems the 6RE .107 has. -
Thanks - that is good to know. Yeah I still prefer an IPS, but yeah TN has gotten better.
Oh wow - I did not know that. Hmm ... maybe even the single GPU users should see if they can get the 2x 230W and perhaps they need to offer a 2x 330W configuration, especially for 1070 SLI. I'd imagine that the GT83VR then must REALLY need 2x 330W.
Is there a firmware fix for this? Maybe custom firmware?
From the Backblaze data, it is best to rely on Hitachi for your storage needs, as they seem to make the most reliable drives. You can occasionally get cheap large TLC drives these days, but it is still a lot more than a HDD.DukeCLR likes this. -

The MSI GT73VR only supports 2x M.2 PCIe NVMe drives + 1x M.2 SATA drive + 1x 2.5" drive.

I have realized this sir
But is there is special reason for this? Because of the internal design? Although it has not the great significance, Kaby support up to 3x M.2 NVMe PCIe.
DukeCLR and Donald@Paladin44 like this. -
I can't be certain but I'm assuming it's just the way the motherboard was designed. It's carried over from the original skylake design and they probably made very minimal changes for kaby lake and the storage controller wasn't something that got updated.DukeCLR, Donald@Paladin44 and hmscott like this.

Thank you for confirmation
This was what I also thought. Whatever little weird as the changes for Kaby is small. But still a better solution than what Dellienware selected for their renewed AW machines

The special reason is MSI decided for 3x M.2 PCIe NVMe, given that we are still on version 3.0 and RAID 0 would still limit speeds to 4,000MB/s or less, the market would just be too small to make it worth making that motherboard change.Papusan and ThePerfectStorm like this. -
Yes, the different OEM's create various solutions. Dellienware chosen the half-size M.2 PCIe Gen3 x2 / SATA drive aka M.2 2242 I think which is a strange creature
Even in the absence of maximum utilization in Raid 0, there are still some who want the opportunity for 3x M.2 PCIe NVMe.

Probably people like @Phoenix who would have probably added another 2TB 960 Pro to his build

If you have the money. Why not? Would choose the same myself. 6TB M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD's is not to be despised
I have 2x 512GB 950 Pro today. Would be great with one more, but a larger one
But I have needed the 3rd M.2 PCIe NVMe slot

The mighty EVOC P870KM1 is the only model that I am aware of that supports 3x M.2 PCIe NVMe.

I agree with you, if you have the money then it would be epic to have that much lightning-fast storage.

BF1 released by CPY....rest of Denuvo3 games are on the way..... -
I think they are done with this lineup...at this point, what max they can change is put GTX1080 Ti....it's a possibility if the cooling system can handle the heat.....we will see after GDC
major changes / upgrades now we will see after the launch of GTX20xx in probably new lineup...may be GT74....have to wait 6 months....hmscott likes this. -
Where did you get your information ?
I had a GT73VR 6RE with 6820hk ,1070 and it had Gsync ,1000000000000000000% !!. sent back due to faults now i have a GT73VR 7RF with 7820HK and 1080 .hmscott likes this. -
what 4TB SSHD you are using...in your rig....?

I have a Acer Predator
Acer Predator XB321HK - 32" IPS LED Monitor - 4K .
Its stunning with my 7RF , and i max out games at 60hz ..you can tell the difference though between the 120hz and the 60hz slightly but the Gsync sorts that out and its buttery smooth . on the single card with laptop it out performs my custom watercooled desktop with 2x980ti and 5960x ,but only with single GPU games . other than that the desktop still pulls away with about 50% gain . but at the Moment im playing games that only uses single gpus like F1 2016 , Battlefield 1 , Modern warfare remastered , Doom and Football manager 2017 . i have also noticed a major decrease in electricity costs over the last few couple of week too using laptop lolLast edited: Feb 5, 2017hmscott likes this. -

These STCL4000400
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Seagate-4T...=UTF8&qid=1486296687&sr=8-2&keywords=4tb+sshd
I actually got them cheap than that , i think i got them for around £300 for both in November 2015 .hmscott likes this. -
price is not an issue....just looking for reliable 4TB storage to add in this laptop....not willing to spend above 1k for storage purpose only on SSD...so SSHD seems like only option, I've 1TB SSHD in other laptop running, so far no issue...but seagate.....looks like have to dig deeper....
As far external display, I have connected 2 IPS external display and I wanted to confirm one thing, if it's default behavior or not, when running game on laptop display, one display out of 2 goes to black screen for few seconds and then back to normal.....
if anyone else having this same behavior, then its normal otherwise something is not right (this behavior is out of the box)....hmscott likes this. -

So I tested with HDMI this morning and had no black out whatsoever before, after or during a game. (tested with BF1, For Honor, Fifa 17 and Arma3
Worth mentioning, I use the monitor as the sole display and keep the notebook shut as my desk doesnt allow for much more stuff to be placed there.hmscott likes this. -
I'm using 2 external and laptop display side by side....and black screen only happens when executing game on laptop display, one display connected via HDMI goes to black screen for few seconds, tested on many games and same behavior....as soon as the game goes to intro screen...the external display came back....it's not like external display goes to suspend, it's like it's also participating in games loading screen.....
I will make a video and upload it.....hmscott likes this. -
The 4TB is in my main rig not my laptop . you can only get a max of 2TB in 2.5 SSHD .. i looked everywhere for bigger sizes . the 2TB is the Seagate Firecuda and is more reliable than there other SSHD drives , i have never had problems with Seagate and i own about 7 SSHD drives all are seagate . the new Firecuda is more reliable and its great so far . just a shame its only 2TB .

Here is the video....lemme know it's normal or not.....it happens with every game.....
Note: This screen behavior has nothing to do with vBios update.....

Will try again in extented mode. Did u use Windows or nvidia control panel to setup your display?

Windows....but in nvidia control panel, it does show the same setting...and this only happen with left display, the right external display stays normal....laptop is in center....
-
Do you have Nvidia Control Panel 3d Global or Program setting Multi-Display/Mixed GPU set to "multiple display performance mode", "single display performance mode", or "compatibility mode" ?Shehary likes this.

no problem, can report back anytime.....family always first....
-
If you are running the game on one display, try setting the performance mode to single or compatibility - it might ignore opening the 2nd display and then closing it - the game is only using 1 display.

I've tried to run game on nvsurround but It's not adding laptop display for some reason and disable laptop display in surround setting (if you suggest solution for this), and option to add only external displays to surround setting and with 2 external display on surround, it's hard to play....will add 3rd external display in near future to enjoy nvsurround...
I will check by changing the setting of performance mode to single or compatibility and report back.... -
Hi, I have gt73vr 7re for 10 days. In last couple of days laptop booted several times into white screen. After restart it booted normally.
From quick search online this can happen to loose connector from display to gpu or less often gpu / motherboard problem.
Is there any other known problem which results in this ? I am thinking about returning this notebook in 14 days safe period but since this white screen boot happens rarely ( 1 in maybe 30 attempts ) I would keep it if I knew it will not get worse over time.
Does anybody has experience with this problem ? -

Disable Fast Startup from the Control Panel > Power Options > Choose What the power buttons do (on the left pane)
then uncheck fast start up and tell me if it solves your issue -
Nice, even better, disable Hibernation all together
Run As Administrator cmd window
powercfg /h off
Reboot, enjoy

Okey....found the reason of external display black screen behavior along with right side laptop screen flicker during game menu and loading screens....
Note: I have above mention scenarios in all games and benchmark tests with all nvidia drivers.....and it's out of the box...since day one....
reason is 120Hz refresh rate.....
If I choose 60Hz refresh rate in game, black screen no more along with right side laptop display screen flicker gone in game menus and during game loading screens.....
so what causing this, cannot turn off 120Hz refresh rate...it's one of the key feature of this laptop..is the screen bad or GPU (again it has nothing to do with vBios update, infact I thought updating vbios may fix the flickering issue at least)
-
Yes I did miss it. It took me 2 days to find this thread again. I'm not sure why it would do that.

First Update:
I disable the G-sync in nvidia control panel and ran the benchmark and game....external display still goes to black screen for couple of seconds but right side laptop display screen flicker in game menu / loading screen gone now @ 120Hz refresh rate.....Last edited: Feb 5, 2017 -
Second Update:
After re-enabling G-Sync and V-Sync (which was off) in nvidia control panel, with V-Sync enabled in game also, no flicker on laptop screen but still external display goes to black screen for few seconds...
can we run both G-Sync and V-Sync side by side..... -
You are supposed to disable V-sync in the Game, but enable it in Nvidia Control Panel - Global and / or Program 3D settings.
You can also enable G-sync, disable V-sync in game and in Nvidia Control panel, and use a Frame Limiter like RTSS - set to Refresh - 1, Gsync needs FPS limited to 1 less than refresh with a frame limiter. -
Third Update:
Screen flicker only caused by G-Sync...even with V-Sync enabled in nvidia panel....still see some level of flickering during fire strike loading screen.....but if G-Sync off, zero screen flicker.... -
So, does it flicker other than at transitions? Like mid-game, or mid-benchmark? Or only getting into and out of the graphical application?
