I kinda wanna share my story with MSI GT73VR
it started september of 2016. I decided to buy a laptop without compromises and I thought I could get one with 2699€. So I bought MSI GT73VR. As I have been recently visiting in an exhibition where MSI marketers were showing off their products. I trusted the quality and went on with that. Well, at first I was amazed how well it performed while playing games though it had minor hiccups with Dragon Center and random complete system wide lag spikes which required reboot. This went on for a week.
Then it started to do this lag spikes more often until it broke completely. I sent it for a repair and it took 5 weeks to get it repaired. I was happy to get back and I hoped it would work. It worked for a week until same thing happened. This time it took another 5 weeks for me (because getting parts from MSI is slooooow). So basically computer was three months old and I've had it with me less than two weeks. I felt quite disappointed...
I got it back. Used it for a week and SAME THING HAPPENED AGAIN. Then the service guy told that "now MSI have to refund the computer or at least send a new one". First it took three weeks to get the information from MSI service that it will be replaced with a new model. Now I have waited two weeks already and I still dont know when I will be getting my new computer. What disappoints me most is that I will propably get the "old" 6RE as 7RE have been brought to market already.
The retail store have been very helpful with me on this case and as I am working with them a lot and I know all the guys there personally I decided that I will go through this process and wait for the computer. I am very pleased with their help as they report to me almost daily if there has been any changes on this case...And they dont normally even sell this powerful laptops in the store. They literally ordered it just for me...
I actually contacted to MSI support once their reply was basically following: "we are sorry, be patient". That made me furious, but I decided to hold it in me. Propably the service guy who works on MSI doesnt have any power to do anything there or maybe MSI just dont care how their customers feels about their super expensive products. I would have thought that when I buy a 2,7k product, it would simply work and the support would be fast as lightning. Answer is No. MSI doesn't care about their customer satisfaction. The good German, DukeCLR and Spartan@HIDevolution like this. -

Awesome stuff! If only the GT73VR had a socketed CPU

wow man! I am shocked at the amount of options available! This is like a Prema BIOS
I disabled Hibernation, Enabled Intel Speed Shift, increased my VR Current Limit to 2400, enabled native NVMe support, changed the Drives topology from SATA to m2 / SSD for my M2 drives, many settings that I can't even remember
Thanks a lot man! -
You are most welcome.
btw why you increase the VR Current Limit, you using the VR...?hmscott likes this. -

Ok it was a dumb question.....and google is fast in replying.....
Let me add a little detail. In the BIOS, you have a setting call "CPU VR current override", and if you select this to ENABLE, your CPU will ignore the TDP limits, and the TDC limit. There is no "cripple Overclocking", we proactively putted this feature to make sure the Overclockers will have fun. Try it yourself, and have fun!Spartan@HIDevolution and hmscott like this. -
"VR Current Limit defines the highest current drain that is allowed by the CPU Integrated Voltage Regulator when under extreme high load. Raising this value to the maximum value virtually means the disable of the current limit barrier on the Intel internal Voltage Regulator, which prevents the CPU from throttling down due to extensive current that is drained by the CPU when O.C"Spartan@HIDevolution and hmscott like this.

I set mine to 2400 -
Is there any chance of causing damage to the CPU Voltage Regulator by raising the VR Current Limit that high?
-
Spartan@HIDevolution Company Representative
no, the CPU will only pull what it needs. It's not like increasing the voltage.
Same with the power limits
although I just set my power limits up from 200 to 230 for both values, that's enough to stop throttling for a 4.2 Ghz overclock -
A limit is not dangerous. High voltage with corresponding high temp is what to worry about.Shehary likes this.

Thank you, i will have a look in a bit

I just ordered mine, pretty much due to the posts in this forum. Most of the posts here are exploratory in nature and not so much troubleshooting. Kind of what I am looking for currently with this kind of spending.

Oh look, what I found...This baby does support eGPU.....

It sounds like that should be Enabled by default, until you actually connect an eGPU up to the computer.Last edited: Feb 15, 2017Shehary likes this.

Well it does support Thunderbolt 3, as per BIOS options.

I have a MSI GT7VR 7RE with GTX 1070 and every time I install new Nvidia drivers in Windows 10, during the install process of the driver, I have black screen because it switches to the internal GPU. I need to force the laptop to go to sleep mode by pressing the power button, and after resuming from sleep mode, I have image again. Is there a way to fix this?

Did you try Custom Install with Clean Install Option...?Atma likes this.

Nope. I will try in next Nvidia update
But in my other PCs and also in an ASUS G75VX that has internal and Nvidia GPU, I dont have this problem.Atma likes this. -
I'm trying to overclock my i7 7820HK CPU to 4.1 or 4.2 in Dragon Center. Also change in bios de power limits from 200 to 230, but every time I use AIDA64 to do a stability test the CPU stays between 3,6 and 3,7 Ghz and never reaches 4.1 or 4.2. Is this normal?? What can I do to change this?
-
That's the cool thing I miss from MSI, I could always use the latest official BIOS and have it instantly unlocked by just one click.Spartan@HIDevolution, hmscott and steberg like this.

you score states 4.2ghz not 4.1ghz http://www.3dmark.com/fs/11703951
My score... http://www.3dmark.com/fs/11694189
took me 5 mins to do it ... mine is just the bars on Dragon centre maxed out ..hmscott likes this. -
You have to raise the current limit, which is probably what's holding you back. The auto limit is too low, at 75A and I found it throttling on regular benches. I raised it to 200A.Atma likes this.

Can you point me the menu and name of the option on BIOS to do that? Thanks!!

Well, a bit tricky when using the lappy in your lap though
But as long term users of MSI, whats the advantages of the unique MSI layout compared to the standard one? Or was it just a matter of "being different"?hmscott likes this. -
I noticed that the GT73 with the 4K screen has quite a lot of backlight bleed. This seem to be something not to uncommon, is it just accept it or switch brands, ie no point in trying to get a laptop replacement?
-
It's a matter of muscle memory, go with it, learn the differences load the profile when you move to it and reap the benefits
It's not that big of a deal after a while.
I didn't say I *never* use the built-in keyboard / trackpad, it's just that I minimize the use.
I do of course use the Fn keys and other buttons as needed.
Sometimes it's nice to have the keyboard / trackpad "nearby" when working around the laptop, otherwise it's the wired / wireless keyboard / trackpad 99% of the time. -
I almost always do a complete reinstallation of windows with my own keys to get rid of bloat, is this safe to do on the GT73? Ie all necessary software is available from MSIs website? Couldn't care less for trial versions of X and Y.
-
Never really got into "lap" use... maybe because the first portable computers weren't lap friendly - it never occurred to use them that way.
We always found "perches" for the computer to keep them safe, cool, and well fed by power.
These days, I think it's probably a good idea to take into account "Nad" safety for us guys, keep them cool and radiation free.

It's too uncomfortable to balance a laptop, uncomfortable on the neck, not optimal enough for long sessions.

Trust the long experience of others, and create the MSI BurnRecovery flash recovery drive to hold in reserve should you get stuck along the way building your own OS image to have full functionality.
There really isn't a lot to uninstall, and some like what I uninstall and keep it. I prefer the manual route and uninstall Dragon Gaming Center and use XTU + AB + RTSS + Windows power plans, uninstall TrueColor but load my own ICC profile.
It looks like for Windows 10 you might want to keep ReSizer (or whatever it's called) to Scale Windows 10 on 4k - for me I don't need it I set 100% in Windows and uninstall the MSI tool.
The rest is much simpler to keep or uninstall individually one at a time, rebooting in between, and even then it's 15 minutes of work instead of hours of futzing around with a from scratch media install.
With the BurnRecovery flash drive you can always go back to the out of the box configuration for debugging, RMA, and when it comes time to sell it.
Have fun
