Or to put it another way, how much CPU performance increase would justify the price difference between the gt73vr xRF with hq vs hk?
For those with gtx 1070 the diff. is up to 14%, would the diff. be significantly higher between those with 1080 (would the bottleneck be more pronounced with 1080 and hq, increasing that 14% diff.)?hmscott likes this. -
I got myself a GT73VR 7RE a couple of days a ago. My problem is: I have the GPU in discrete mode everything is fine, games running great. If i then turn the computer off and then turn it on at a later time still in discrete mode,i get very low fps. Like from 120 down to 40. I have managed to get it back to normal again by first activating UMA mode and then back again to discrete mode. Any ideas?

Usually there are a couple / few other more expensive things thrown in.
The 6820HK is like the 1080, the top end of the laptop line and therefore vendors are "helpful" and bundle expensive stuff with it.
If you are worried about a few hundred $'s for an item you will own for a few years, then maybe rethink that expenditure and scale things back a bit.
If you are more concerned with overspending then not spending enough, then you are spending too much

Start from now and work backwards, or search on keyboards in this thread and reduce the pile to a stack.
I read of this problem in other threads too, it seems to be a driver issue, maybe coupled with Windows 10, so maybe consider backing up to Windows 8.1 for some stability in performance.
Windows 10 is going to continue to change and cause problems ongoing, and you'll be constantly putting up with problems - waiting for a new driver or a Windows 10 update to fix it.
A lot of issues with G-sync in recent Nvidia drivers, and so maybe try disabling G-sync and rebooting.
Also, on second thought, you are describing coming back from Sleep or Hibernation, where most problems rest in Nvidia drivers and Windows 10, so stop using both.
Disable Hibernation - and stop using Sleep, which will disable FastStartup and SlowShutdown, and you will get a complete shutdown and a complete startup, stopping the dangling performance issues from coming out of Sleep/Hibernation.
Run As Administrator a Windows cmd shell:
powercfg /h off
Reboot and then you should be a bit more stable under Windows 10

I'm sorry im not an english speaker. Should have made it more clear. I do shut down the computer. I dont use sleep or hibernation. The computer came with Windows 10 and im not really a computer guy so i have no idea how to get Windows 8.1. I could probably find out how if i had too though. I will try disabling G-sync and see if it works. I still have the option to return the PC, but if this is just a driver issue i will keep it.

Even if you shutdown, unless you explicitly took action to disable Hibernation your shutdown is really only a "soft" or "hybrid" shutdown.
Windows with Hibernation enabled doesn't do a real shutdown.
Do the hibernation disable, turn hibernation off, and reboot, and see if that helps too

The GT73VR doesn't really need assistance like that for cooling, so if it fits on your old laptop cooler, try that first.
My GT80 doesn't really "fit" on the CoolerMaster Ergo Stand III, but I use that to angle the laptop more vertical to assist air flow for convection cooling, so in that way using a laptop stand does assist in cooling

Is there a way to force the CPU and Cache Voltage Offset to -0,100V in Windows startup with some startup option in Intel XTU? I ask this because every time I change something in the BIOS it overwrites the -0,100 to 0,100
Also I think it is not possible to enable FAST STARTUP in the BIOS because NVIDIA GPU doesn't have UEFI driver in the BIOS. I've check with GPU-Z. Why is that?hmscott likes this. -
In the BIOS it's called FastBoot, and it's just to skip POST testing, makes the BIOS segment of booting up go faster. It's got nothing to do with Windows FastStartUp or SlowShutdown of Hybrid Boot - done with Hibernation - disable it!!
Are you creating an XTU Profile - Apply the changes, then Save to a named profile so XTU will read it and apply those settings at boot time.
Note that if you crash or for any reason fail a boot, XTU will notice and not apply the Profile settings at boot time.
You need to go back into XTU after a crash or failed startup to re-select the Profile and Apply the settings, then XTU will apply that profile a future boots.Papusan and Spartan@HIDevolution like this. -

I want a multipurpose DTR that will partially be used as a workstation for topographical work, architectural design (3d modeling and rendering) video editing and encoding, occasional gaming and maybe programing in the near future. I will surely benefit from hk cpu's or even better k's!

Sorry, I meant FastBoot, not FastStartup LOLOL.... I enabled fastboot in the BIOS and the time I go there it is disable. I think its because the GTX 1070 BIOS doesn't have a UEFI driver support...
About the XTU. Yes, I made a profile with those changings but I notice when I change something in the BIOS the XTU is not loaded on windows. I will do more tests to make sure its true what I meanhmscott likes this. -
Interesting, well I guess if XTU does some kind of sanity check and notices something it changes has been changed in the BIOS behind it's back it backs off to prevent conflicts.

AFAIK, unless you have the unlocked BIOS for the GT73VR you can't set a negative offset voltage - the stock BIOS doesn't have the +/- sign option line to set.
Yeah, @Phoenix has found the same Fastboot setting not kept between reboots problem, and MSI has been notified - hopefully a fixed BIOS will be forthcoming

experienced members suggested higher value doesn't mean you will get more FPS but may be you end up frying your GPU specially if you go higher on vram and stay there for long time...may start seeing green artifacts and sparkles....worse case scenario....fried vram....hmscott likes this.

Since we don't have control over voltage/power limits you'll be limited in overclocking the GPU as well as power limits of the laptop itself.
Most of the time GPU Boost will already give you an overclock based on temps so even if you dont OC the core it'll boost up to 1700-1800MHz+ etc.. and trickle down when temps get higher. As for RAM, depends on whats on your video card. Samsung and Hynix seem to clock pretty high but most common ones we see are Samsung and Micron atm. Most desktop users kick it up to +500MHz and runs fine but since heat dissipation isnt always readily avail you'll want to keep that lower to like 300MHz> or what not. CPU Core you may start capping out at +250MHz but again doesn't really matter much as you'll get hit either thermal or power limits whichever comes first and it'll throttle down.
If you use the later vBIOS it caps it at 1645MHz for the boost so you can have a stable OC if you do add +100/200 on the core.
Your best bet is to overclock on your own, use a program like Heaven and monitor temps. If it gets too hot back down. If you see artifacts or slow downs, back down. OC CPU or RAM first and not at the same time to see how high you can get it, then find the balance between the two to work together.
Benching purposes I've been at around +250/500MHz, take that a notch down to 150-200/300-400 should be fine for gaming.
Monitor your video card while you play, most of the time you're already auto overclocking without you knowing

No, I fixed original stock HS but did discuss the matter with MSI if they sell both GPU / CPU HS as spares and they did, all you need is to contact Tom Ho with your personal detail, notebook serial number and query.....I don't know how much MSI charging for each HS....
Yes I know about GT72 3 pipe version an yes it's 100% same as GT73VR CPU HS even I was wondering how to use that spare heatpipe on CPU in GT73VR.....

I think I will stick with the "default" by ASUS Dragon Center overclocking values, ie, +100Mhz for the GPU and +200Mhz for the VRAM. Tried to put the max in this tool, +200Mhz for the CPU and +350Mhz for the VRAM, and the 3dmark benchmarks in Time Spy and Fire Strike are almost the same and you are right!! Only about +300 points.
I have two more questions for this amazing forum
1 - Do I need XTU service running since I have the unlocked BIOS and everything about OC can be done there, specially the -0,100 for the voltage offset of CPU and Cache?
2 - I did an upgrade to my GT73VR-7RE putting an extra M.2 SSD to use RAID 0. I had no other way to "break" the label with the warranty warning. I've search google before doing that and I've read in another forum about this. There was a copy answer from MSI saying that it is only a warning and that if it is for upgrade propose you can do it. Can you confirm that? If I have some problem with my laptop (hope not.. knock the wood
) and I inform MSI that I've opened it only to put an extra M.2 SSD, will I have a problem? I think it doesn't' make sense to buy a laptop like this that has big upgrade possibilites and could not do it because of a label?

1) You shouldn't need XTU bloat running and steal clock cycles if the bios is unlocked. A better idea anyway is using TS. Put up 4 OC profiles and change between them with a single key command.
2) Regarding warranty. This is from Razerbook
No OEM should or can deny you further fully warranty if you upgrading, cleaning inside or repair your own machine!! Only if you yourself destroy the machine!! -

1. No you don't need XTU, since you can directy add values in BIOS.....
2. That warranty sticker and warning label only for noobs....as long as you don't break anything...you are good...user damage won't cover in warranty....I did full tear down to change the stock rams to Hyper-X.....changed all thermal pads...lapped CPU HS (this won't cover in warranty)....will be doing couple of mods specifically adding additional HDD or SSD or M.2 drives..... -
It does only come with 3 pipes but see there is an additional Pipe on CPU heatsink which connected with GPU heatsink GT72VR....
So I was wondering if there is possibility to add a spare pipe to CPU since GT73 CPU has same HS and holes are there but not enough space......

-0.100? Is that the right number? I just started playing with XTU over the weekend and with x40 on all 4 cores I can only get it to -0.055, anything else and it crashes eventually (Been playing witcher 2 at max).
On a side note, 378.57 and 378.66 both give me the black screen flash while gaming if I increase settings in the nvidia control panel. Even with Vsync on with the witcher 2 there are some scenes that drop it to 40fps and then while jumping back up to 60 it black screen flashes. So currently, only the driver 376.39 from MSI has no black screen flashes during gaming, I just can't use it until you can turn off the stupid windows 10 auto Nvidia driver update to 376.52 or whatever version it forces on you (that black screens also). -
You have any idea that did MSI anodized these copper heatsink or just used matte black color for marketing?

probably aesthethic, but it also makes the bottom panel more "uniform" in color (no copper color sticking out etc) -

Yes, its the right number. -0,100 for CPU Voltage offset and for Cache Voltage offset. Same value for both. Did u also change the Power Limit 1 and 2 from 200 to 230? And also the VR Limit Current to 100A (400)? I have these settings and my OC is stable @ 4.2Ghz on 7820HK with 2 hours of Stress Testing from AIDA64 Extreme. Pass all the benchmarks on AIDA64, Sisoft Sandra 2016 SP1 3 times all the benchs, Cinema 3D 15 and 3dmark, all the test, several times, with the GPU OC +100 core/+200 ram. Everything smoth and stable.

You have to consider Max Non Turbo Boost Ratio when undervolting, when/if you have it at 8x = 800MHz it might have a really low voltage that it will crash on idle.
