Portrait Displays, the author of TrueColor sent me a new version that had that bug. I then reverted back to the MSI version and it went away
uninstall it then delete this folder:
C:\ProgramData\Portrait Displays
then reboot
now install the latest Official MSI version again -

So i had a chat with Donald from HIDevolution. You were right @Phoenix. He is a great guy and was very helpful regarding my queries for international warranty and shipping.
Talking of thermal paste how much of a difference in temperatures we are talking on stock clocks with IC Diamond?

@dzeek here is one of the video's with Asus showing a "never announced" laptop and the XG Station using 2 PCIE x4 cables to hook up for "no loss" egpu communications:
Linus says "PCIE x4 over TB3 cable", but it's really 2 proprietary PCIE x4 cables running between the "mystery laptop" and a pre-release STATION XG 2 (he called it a GX2) see at 3:33.
There were a couple of other videos out around that time that had more info...I'll see if I can find them...Last edited: Feb 23, 2017 -
Thanks again for your answer. But I tried that two days ago and it still doesn't work. I can start the application, but when I switch the profiles, nothing happens.
There's an error in Windows Event Viewer, but unfortunately, it doesn't say that much:

I don't know about the stock paste, Since I chose to have 64GB RAM, they had to disassemble the laptop to reach behind the keyboard, thus, the stock thermal paste was no good as it was removed with the heatsink. I opted for IC Diamond on both the C PU and GPU and max temps are 85C during long gaming sessions and this is with the Auto fan profile not the cooler boost fan profile (ie. max fan speed) -

How did you leave TrueColor when you uninstalled it?
I recall there was a setting along the set of boxes you could click in the TrueColor GUI that would also cause that red ghosting effect for text...
Maybe try reinstalling Truecolor, and changing the options and re-testing for red ghosting text... and find a setting that doesn't, then uninstall TC.

Thanks. I saw that among other egpu enclosures on the market. It looks very good. Very similar specs to the Razer. I was hoping to find someone who had tried a solution on the GT73VR before I take the leap!hmscott likes this.

Thanks. Appreciate the input on the direct PCIE approach. My initial thought is that a TB3 approach seems more future proof, less complicated to implement, and more flexible...provided it has enough bandwidth. I'll see if TB3 is fast enough. If not, then look at the PCIE approach or a separate system.hmscott likes this.

It's hotfix
This is GeForce Hot Fix driver version 378.77 that addresses the following:
- Fixed driver installation errors for laptops with GeForce GTX 1050 and 1050 ti GPUs.
- Fixed crash in Minecraft and some other Java-based titles
- Resolved 'Debug Mode' as default option on Pascal based GPUshmscott likes this. -
Good idea. I just re-installed it, but there are not that many boxes that I could try. The only settings are "App Sync" and "Desktop Partition". None of it helps

TB3 has already shown to lose up to 40% in performance vs native GPU in the laptop, see the jztwocents video's, and many other TB3 reviews.
Until TB4 or whatever triples the throughput, and maybe makes 2 physical connections for bi-directional latency improvement, like the Asus "experiment", TB isn't a good solution.
Native PCIE really is the future, but vendors aren't packaging it in a user friendly way yet for end users. -
Sounds like it's gonna be you, if you wanna get that fancy GPU online quickly
-
Seems that way. I have to get the WX GPU card anyway. I'll try the eGPU approach if I can find an enclosure that I can return if it doesn't work. If not, I may just swap out the GTX I have in a desktop system and replace it with the AMD WX. I know that will work but I would prefer to have access to the GTX for other apps and also be able to the use the WX on the MSI laptop.Last edited: Feb 23, 2017hmscott likes this.

I suggest to wait for GDC 28 Feb, 2017....nVidia is launching GTX 1080 Ti and also AMD will have the stage same day before nvidia event...so there may be new hardware announcements.... and right after GDC is PAX East event 10th March....we will see some new products and new laptop line ups or new addition to existing line ups....hmscott likes this.

and here I got all excited.
I installed 378.66 and used a longer process to install the drivers as suggested by a member on another forum in a problem thread. If it doesn't work I will try the hotfix drivers. I'm not running GFE now, I doubt that will have any impact though. -
Thanks. Good advice. One other idea. I thought I read that the GT73VR has two GPU slots. Is that accurate? If so, can the other slot be used for a PCIE card that I can connect to an external PCIE chassis and install the other GPU there?hmscott likes this.

There indeed have been MXM extension cabinets for just this purpose that break out into PCIE slots

Okay True Color is driving me nuts!!! I WANT to use it but the Desktop Partition is the most asinine option ever. The problem i have is that i had a MSI GT73VR with a 1070 prior and I could never get the "Show Options" button to drop down so I could turn that stupid option off. I ended up returning it and getting one with a 1080 in it, did a clean windows 10 install, installed True Color...and guess what...THE SAME THING! I cannot get the menu to drop down to disable Desktop Partition and cannot even disable it by right clicking in the bottom right quick icons option. I uninstalled and reinstalled on both laptops and nothing works. is there any reg hack or anything to get desktop Partition to go "bye bye". I hate it and the fact they have it "on" as the default options is mind boggling....PLEASE....any suggestions or solutions? I dont understand why it seems to work for most of you (the show options setting) but has not worked for me on now 2 MSI laptops.hmscott likes this. -
I used such a bus extension box with Sun Microsystems Workstation and Server enclosures long ago, and it was "off the shelf" to an extent. Pull one of the IO bus cards out of the Sun, plug in the jumper cable to the new box, plug in the IO bus card into the new box, and a couple of new IO bus card controllers as well, it worked great
You mentioned using the spare MXM card bus spot in the GT73VR, and you couldn't plug in the GPU into that connector, but you can get a breakout box to convert between MXM and PCIE 3.0 - it would have a power supply and look kinda like an eGPU - and would fit GPU's like them too.
There is actually a group here and on TechInferno that explored this, I didn't take a lot of time to read it, but it looks like some made it work:
Let's figure out how to convert internal MXM connector an external PCI-E x16 box

This is what i see when i open True Color
There is no Tools Option. When I click on "Show Settings", the program force closes itself. It does this on my newer MSI GT73VR with the 1080 in it and it did and showed this same thing on my older 1070 that i returned. I cannot get anything more than this. It will let me change the color profiles if I click on one of the icons but that is it. -
Yeah, you need to be able to expand by clicking on Show Settings successfully before you can make the change to Desktop Partition...
What version of True Color do you have?
@Phoenix posted a link for a newer one, and mentioned the previous version was crashing.
If you can't get into the settings to disable Desktop Partition, and it's pissing you off enough to return a laptop, I'd uninstall TC for now, and enjoy your laptop.
I don't use TrueColor - EVER - and I can't believe anyone *needs* it, so uninstall and get rid of the annoyance until a version comes out that runs right. -
Thank you. This was very interesting reading. Unfortunately, the Facebook posts indicate the project was put on hold due to lack of customer interest.hmscott likes this.

@hmscott Thank you for all the encouragement and information. I'll keep reading and exploring for a bit. So far it seems nothing commercial has reached the market. It does make one wonder why. I suppose lack of interest but they may be due to lack of awareness that this is possible or the needs is being addressed adequately via Thunderbolt.hmscott likes this.

That and the lack of other productized solutions shows just how niche your need is. It's not gonna happen in a easy out of the box solution - not that the SourNinja looked user friendly - so it seems like building a desktop to use that card makes the most sense.
-
Yeah, the TB isn't fast enough yet, maybe a fast enough bus will come along, but then again we seem to never catch up with serial comm's vs. parallel - the serial connection is always behind in speed.
By the time a fast enough TB comes out, a new PCIE will release and cards that use that much bandwidth will be released

I have the latest version under the MSI download sections for my make and model. I will try to find the link that @Phoenix had and see if that works. And I returned my 1070 version because I wanted the 1080 version...not because of True Color. I was just saying that same problem occurred on both. Thank you for trying to help and will see if that newer version works and report back!hmscott likes this. -

I think it depends on the performance and latency that can be tolerated. Its not always a question of what is best but what is good enough!

Be sure and test your special GPU in a desktop somewhere to get a good baseline for performance to compare against what you are getting in an eGPU. -

This is an upgrade you had to save those 2 files then record them back to where they should be -
captaincranium Notebook Consultant
Okay Phoenix I reinstalled back to the MSI most recent version and back to where i was with not being able to open Disable Partition. So since your file i downloaded is an upgrade file, do I uninstall the MSI version or just install your newer one over the MSI one? Or do I still uninstall the MSI version via program manager and BUT leave the folders under Program Files? Thanks!hmscott likes this. -

Just save those files that are missing In the new update so you can copy them back after you install the new version. After you have them backed up you can uninstall the old version and reboot then install the new version and reboothmscott likes this. -
I finally received my GT73VR with 6820HK/GTX 1080. These are the results after 2 hours and 43 minutes of AIDA64 test. The CPU fan was running at 52%. The following changes I made in BIOS:
Adjust CPU Ratio: 40
Adjust Ring Ratio: 36
CPU Core Voltage: 0
CPU Core Voltage Offset: 0
CPU Ring Voltage: 0
Clock Frequency: 10030
VR Current Limit: 400 (100A)
Power Limit: 230
Power Limit: 230
After windows started, I opened Intel XTU to make sure everything was the same as my BIOS settings and I decreased the Core Voltage Offset to -0.030V. I can make it stable with -0.050V but in games it crashes. I can increased the fan speed to get lower temps but I think 52% fan speed is silent and works well. I tried to Overclock it to 4.1GHz and it is stable without touching the Core Voltage Offset but the Intel XTU benchmark results were the same as the 4.0GHz OC. Also, the 4.1GHz Max temps were the same as the 4.0GHz OC.Attached Files:

Hey man, do you have the 6820HK or the 7820HK? Can I ask you what are your settings in the BIOS when you OC to 4.1Ghz? These are low temps! It's maybe because you just ran it with games but that's what I'm gonna do all the time anyway and not benchmarks. Thanks man! -
Just upgrade my BIOS to last version. I hope this fixed the black screen I was getting sometimes when ever I upgrade the NVIDIA drivers, it switched to iGPU for some moments and never return again do dGPU and ended with black screen. I have to put laptop in sleep mode, by pressing the power button, and after it returned with image and switched again to dGPU.
Regarding the new WIFI driver from Killer, can some post the link? I've installed last beta drivers and wanted the last official.
Thanks! -
Many thanks!
