By the way I want to ask you guys something. Is playing games on ultra with the GPU temps at 70-75°C normal? I was playing Call of Duty Modern Warfare, a 2014 game and a graphics card game, and the temps were hovering at mid 70s. This is without OC on the GPU and 4.0Ghz OC on CPU. Is this normal? Thanks!

I played COD Modern Warfare remastered edition too and yes It's 100% normal temps with Stock TIM and after I re-pasted with Kryo temps always stayed under 70....DukeCLR likes this.

Huh - all my older, perhaps slimmer laptops did 90 - 92C when pushed and my recent GT70 does about 85C which I consider as a well tolerated figure. And you ask about mid 70...DukeCLR and Spartan@HIDevolution like this.

yes man, what do you expect it to run at 50C????????? those temps are perfectly fineDukeCLR likes this. -
With my previous laptop (MSI GT72 2QE - 4710HQ), I got a BSOD while OC the CPU to 4GHZ and not enough voltage. This BSOD break my system SSD (under warranty)
-
No, it didn't
It was completely recoverable, make sure you realize that next time it happens.
It's a common occurrence when OC'ing or undervolting - you need to schedule a checkdisk after every crash - when it reboots that's the first thing I do, then either at next reboot or crash it automatically checks and fixes anything wrong at the next start up.
If you just let it go, without fixing it, and install / uninstall - writing to that disk - it will eventually BSOD and may need a bootable installer to run the Repair to fix the boot.
It can also be the BIOS settings got corrupted and defaults were restored - it's less often, but it can happen. You just need to boot into the BIOS and put the settings back correctly - load optimized defaults and then set the boot device, and F10 save and reboot.
You didn't need to RMA the laptop... don't feel bad, lots of people do this.

@Phoenix Thanks for helping me (again and again and again) bro
Yeah, the SSD somehow got disabled and it won't show in the Macrium Reflect that we made. Somehow resetting the BIOS to default made it enter into the Windows (smiled ear to ear when this happened LOL). Thanks again man! Got a question to you though buddy. I still don't know what caused the error. Was it because of the undervolt? Or was it because I ran Aida64 one after another to try if my undervolt was stable or not?
-
Spartan@HIDevolution Company Representative
too much undervolt........ no worries..
don't undervolt more than -50mV anymore
Each CPU is different. I can undervolt by -100mV and it's stable. All depends on the Silicon Lottery which determines at what voltage can a CPU run at the selected clock speed stable.hmscott likes this. -

I was also at 85 with my GT70, I stopped checking the temps after awhile and that thing is still working. I still like to keep my GT73 sub 80 though, and so far I have been able to do this but I have yet to play this in warmer conditions so I will work on under volting in a month or so. Hi again!
I dont know what to do with my MSI GT73VR 6RE. As I wrote in the thread it seems like the cpu fan is faulty and is producing a scraping or metallic sound. I contacted the reseller and all they can offer me is to return the computer and I cant get a new one from somewhere else to the bargain price I got it for. So I am left with:
1. Return the computer and get a new one with lower performance for the same price.
2. Try to replace the fan myself.
I am working with computers alot and should be able to make it but I am afraid to tinker with a brand new expensive laptop and dont want to loose warranty.

As I posted the solution of CPU Fan noise multiple times too in this thread....you will not loose warranty and replacing fan is very easy with this laptop...hmscott likes this.

The fans are easy to get to, I removed mine to check the model numbers and see how much dust had collected. 5 screws to remove the cover then a few more to remove the fans and the shrouds around them.Shehary, hmscott and Spartan@HIDevolution like this. -
Follow @Shehary instructions and open a support request with MSI. They will send you a new fan. Super easy to replace yourself and it doesn't void the warranty (despite what the sticker says)

Hi guys
I was with Asus ever since they've released G73. Just a week ago I've got rid of G752VM for various reasons and I think it's time to try something new. I've always liked MSI looks but mixed reviews stopped me from a purchase . Now, I'm really digging GT 73and GS 73 series with 1070. Leaning towards GT series cause of G-SYNC. Not planning to play with voltage or OC at all. What I want to know is how is the build quality and driver support comparing to Asus G?
How is the quality of 120hz screen? Any light bleeding?
How do you update VBIOS? Same USB procedure as regular BIOS update? How is the support overall? The last thing I want is to switch and than regret it.
Thank you allhmscott likes this. -
GT73 Screen has some level of light bleed and according to MSI, it's normal with their lineup
Updating / Flashing BIOS required USB but vBIOS and Ec Firmware Flashing / Update doesn't....
Quality of 120Hz screen awesome though it's not IPS, it's TN panel but excellent TN panel.
Build Quality is also somewhere between best and excellent.....
Cleaning / re-pasting / upgrading hardware also super easy....
GTX 1070 temps are excellent and over all laptop cooling is awesome....
cannot give you comparison between GT73 and ASUS G....
Drivers update not frequent may be GT73 doesn't required frequent update..only see few updates after a month or two....
Support is somewhere between Good and Best......HardCoreGamer4Life, hmscott, DukeCLR and 1 other person like this. -

Even if you switch from ASUS to ACER you would be happy.......
if you want a laptop that works, avoid anything from ASUS.
click on the spoiler:
1) Returned my ASUS G751JY
2) ASUS = 0 quality, it's a matter of luck if you get a 100% working ASUS laptop, or any piece of hardware made by ASUS.
3) All the latest and previous last 3 Gen ASUS ROG laptops have USB port issues, it's all over their ROG forums
4) And old post I made 1 year back.......
All ASUS laptops has a problem with the left USB 3.0 Ports. You plug in a USB 3.0 HDD to the left top or left bottom ports and it will randomly keep disconnecting. That is for all G750 series, JX,JW,JH,JZ,JS, you name it. don't believe me, just hang around on the ROG forums and see the jokes of problems they have. pathetic for the amount of money you pay. problems with screens, auto dimming problem, contrast problem.
I wouldn't use an ASUS laptop anymore even if they gave it to me for free! cheap Taiwanese crap!
Did I forget to mention...
their implementation of Optimus is messed up...it is very tricky to force games to use your nVIDIA GPU unless you do a lot of settings and even then users on their forums complain that the freakin' games are using the Intel HD Graphics! LOL! horrible!
you want Testimony ? Please take the time to read this:
why ASUS? because people who buy ASUS cannot afford Clevo, no other reason on earth...that's a fact...I was one of them...
First laptop, 2 years ago..
G73Sw:
bought it and ran home like a little child wanting to see my lights in the chiclet keyboards....ooops...no lights...tried all driver updates..BIOS update...nope..
Called ASUS, they told me to bring it to the service center it's an easy fix!! whaaaat?? I buy a 2000 USD laptop and go to the service center next day? oh well..I did and they activated it with their BIOS tweak utility that they don't give to customers! great quality control Taiwanese Engineers! send out laptops for sale that don't work properly as advertised...
after 1 week...the screen started giving me fuzzy images...closing/opening the screen lid fixed the problem....wow!! what did I buy? a 1990 Toyota Corolla or a brand new gaming laptop??
They said they need to replace my screen! wow!! the laptop can't last a week without being repaired! i fought for a refund and got it after a long hassle...
next laptop...
ASUS G75VW,
ASUS decided to remove their awesome creative sound blaster audio chipset and put some cheap VIA audio chipset which made the subwoofer act like a center speaker rather than a subwoofer..
also..I only had the option to get the matte screen...oh well...people say matte is good...right? NOPE! not on ASUS! the ASUS matte screens look as if someone spilled grease all over them. very grainy image especially if you look at a white screen such as these forums or Google..if you look close..you can see the pixels of colorful rainbows! again shocked in awe for this cheap crap!
So I called ASUS complaining about the quality of the screen, they offered to change it to the 3D screen not coz I want 3D, but only because that is the only screen they have that is Glossy..
took the laptop...2 days..I get a call...sorry sir, we changed your screen, but fried your motherboard....we have no spare motherboards...so if you pay $500 USD we can give you a G750JX instead or you can wait till god knows when till we get a motherboard from Taiwan...
so I got the G750JX...
very bad driver support....ASUS released the win 8.1 drivers after 6 months of win 8.1 was released...anyone who upgraded while having the old drivers either got a non booting laptop after the upgrade due to outdated bluetooth/wifi drivers or had horrible problems....
next comes the 2D performance of their GTX770M....there is something not right about it! 3D was fine and performed as it should...but 2D was glitchy and choppy...imagine even a simple game of solitaire..the motion of the cards wasn't fluid...I used to get jealouse when I see my friends' Intel HD Graphics perform so smoothly in the Windows environment while my brand new gaming laptop cries in 2D...opening tabs in firefox...wow..another plethora of jerkiness / slow motion
next...they put cheap Atheros WLAN chipsets which cannot connect above 72 MBPS!! wow! had to pay 50 USD and get a Bigfoot Wireless N-Killer from the US and pay customs just to have a laptop perform like a normal computer
next.... USB 3.0 problems..
basically, I had to connect my USB drives to the right ports and the left ones were kept for my mouse and printer? why? because ASUS cannot produce a piece of hardware that functions right! they claim all ports are USB 3.0 and they are all in blue color...BIG LIE! it wasn't only me, I posted this on the ROG forums and every single one of the members verified the same!
I can't find my thread that I started, but here are 2 examples I quickly grabbed:
Asus G750 USB 3.0 Ports not working with some things
and
Is it normal that the top left USB port is very slow?
ASUS? HELLL NO!!
Worst case scenario, save some money and wait, then get a real gaming laptop from Alienware and be happy for life! rather than bite your fingers after you buy your ASUS
A quick Google search on the G750JX presents exactly what I experienced! I've probably formatted that laptop over 200 times twice daily just trying to make it work but every time some quirk happens...

Yes, and contrary to what @Phoenix said I haven't given up on Asus at all, in fact I'm always open to good laptops from any vendor.
@Phoenix had a bad experience with Asus, but I never have. I've had the same quality interactions with Asus as I've had with MSI.
I had an Asus W90Vp-X1 18" Crossfire laptop way back when, and before and after a run of other Asus laptops.
When MSI brought back the 18" form factor in an SLI 980m I upgraded from my Asus G750JH to the MSI GT80 SLI-263, and it's still an awesome laptop.
The new Asus G700VI and Asus GX800VH are great laptops too, I'd be happy with either one.
For a single 1080 in a 17.3" laptop, I think the GT73VR is currently the best price / performance laptop, with the most consistent out of the box quality I've seen, so I can heartily recommend MSI's laptop's too.
Glad to meet you again, welcome to NBR

It's the chkdsk supplied with Windows, and you can schedule a disk check at the next boot by right clicking on the C: drive icon in the Windows file explorer, select Properties, then click on the Tools tab in the dialog that comes up, then click Error Checking, and check for errors - it won't be able to do the C drive while the OS is running, so it will ask to schedule a disk check at the next boot, do that and then close all the dialogs.
You can then reboot to check the disk right away - sometimes I do this - otherwise I go back to work and let it check the disk later - a bit riskier, but if it crashes I'm already set to check the disk when it boot's back up
HardCoreGamer4Life likes this. -
It's not that bad, it's part of the work of OC'ing and tuning, to be able to recover from glitches that happen along the way.
Will something similar happen again? Probably, but now you know what to do, and what else can be done - Repair disk/boot booted from Windows installer.
We all go through it to some degree or another, but once you get the sequence down - exceptions and solutions, it goes very quickly - no drama required

I had emailed MSI support a couple of days ago stating the problem. They emailed me back today instructing me to flash the BIOS, then the VBIOS, and finally install the Nvidia VGA driver from their site.
Since I haven't flashed a BIOS in my entire life, could you walk me through it? Appreciate all the help.

You will never ever regret it shifting to MSI man. As you've said, @Phoenix helps everybody in here and I can really attest to that. He has spent a lot of hours with me tweaking my laptop and repairing/removing unwanted files, applications, softwares and a lot of bloatware crap that I don't need (twice already, after getting it and after that OCing incedent happened). He also helped me install a lot softwares specially installing a NOD32 as my antivirus with SVP 4 Pro (will make good use of the 120hz monitor you have when watching movies, really good app). My laptop's now like his in terms of programs and some settings for faster performance. And if you buy it from HIDevolution, you'll get the best of both worlds since not only will you get a full support from Phoenix, you'll also get a fully checked and customized laptop for better performance and lesser chance of issues out of the box. And wait there's more, the people here really knows their stuff man. download the BIOS file, extract it to a folder, then place the folder in the root of C:
go to BIOS, select UEFI BIOS update, then select that BIOS file, you will get many directories, just keep trying one after the other until you find the one which contains that BIOS folder
start the update, once it's done, it will reboot back into BIOS
once you are back in BIOS, reset BIOS to defaults
now save and exit then immediately shutdown the system by holding the power button for 5 seconds
once you shutdown, remove the power cable for 30 secs to perform an NVRAM reset then plug it back in
enter BIOS again and configure your settings as they were
