In all respect something is up because there have been several reported failures with the 128gb 2280 ssd drives in the gt80 since release. My first GT80-002 had one and many are reported in the GT80 owners thread.

I agree, they do seem to drop dead frequently :(

I think my Asus M.2 drives were SanDisk's, and they kept working for 3 years of use. I put in larger ones for a while, but predominantly I used the SanDisk's.

I replaced these Toshiba 128GB's almost immediately when I got my GT80, and have hardly used them since - so my 128GB failure could be considered an infant mortality failure.

I plan on asking MSI to replace both, so I don't have a 2nd failure - which will require me to send in my laptop all over again... sheesh!!!

You could send me 2 128GB SSD's, and I can throw out the 2 I have - instead of sending them or the laptop in :D

Quick question can i put the new 980 non m cards in my gt80? I know the screw pattern is different along with the actual size. Also, i noticed the gt80s has a different chipset, does this matter?

To be more clear on the subject, I already have an SLI setup with two 980m cards. I just really want to know if its physically possible regardless of fit dimensions on MOBO.
i as well have problems with nvidia driver recovery issues. it is a problem between microsoft and nvidia they need to hash it out quickly it is annoying. didn't happen until windows 10 update.

According to some google searches, the issue there lies with logitech software. Did you install any program for logitech hardware? It seems the DLL is for a Logitech download assistant. You can try checking this out to see if it applies to you: http://www.thewindowsclub.com/problem-starting-logilda-dll-windows

Well to be honest, nvidia always breaks and then fixes features with their drivers. If you had previous drivers where battery boost worked, and newer ones don't then you know nvidia broke something. My advise is, if you need the feature, roll back to a working driver and then email nvidia saying their newer drivers do not support the feature and want to know if they will add it back.

As for backup software, I have only ever used acronis, specifically True Image, and I have made both backups as well as clonings sucessfully, preserving my data as if nothing happened despite physically chaning disks.

I am not sure we can use GTX980, but anyways I would advise you to instead wait for pascal GPUs. If you need extra performance, you might want to try overclocking. Without unlocking vbios, the small overclocking can get you closer to 980 SLI. I will ask around to see if it's possible to use, just to confirm. We could potentially need the whole new heatsinks. The chipset shouldn't affect.

Anyone else have RMA experience with MSI? I physically dropped my GT80 off on 12/28/15 at UPS. I got a confirm email that they received my RMA on 1/5/16. Here I am on the 18th and still no word from MSI. Is their RMA service typically this slow? From my past experience with Dell and my Alienware m18x, I remeber having to have a motherboard replaced and they actually sent a technician to my house with a new motherboard and he put in in right there before my eyes withing 4 days of logging the initial ticket. I was considering buying the GT80S with desktop 980s, and selling my GT80, but after this, I might have to contemplate.

If you bought from one of the MSI resellers listed on the forum, like GenTechPC , they will go to bat for you and follow up with MSI directly. It's one reason I am always confident buying from Ken.
If not, call MSI daily, or send and email to check on the status. Best wishes and update us on what you find out.

It couldn't hurt to follow up with them. Every RMA is a little different on the time, depending on how long it takes to diagnose the issue and fix it. I think they just send updates when they get the computer then when it ships, but that is my experience working with them as a reseller, and not quite sure if it varies as a direct consumer. Might still be worth just sending a follow up email to get an ETA though.

Well I'm not worried about the cooling aspect of the video cards. My gt80 is water cooled anyways. I have access to cnc mills so I just made custom water blocks with external drip less quick connect fittings running a bad ass Koolance external unit. And I agree with waiting for pascal gpu. At that point I will buy a new laptop. They say pascal gpu comes out q2 2017 so by then they might have i9 processors. Regardless, I want to find out if 980 cards fit. Would be a good question for an msi engineer. I wonder why they haven't made a water cooled version it wasn't hard to do. Look at alienware they copied my design haha.

Ya will do when I get some time in between flights. Unfortunately tsa will not allow me to bring my laptop on plane through carry on luggage anymore due to it having uv red cooling liquid in two hoses. So just a tip if your travel with your gt80 and want to water cool it.

Put it in a zip lock baggie labeled as containing less than 3.4oz of liquid, and you're good to go :)

Well, I goot a response back from MSI today:

We are currently doing more testing with your notebook, our technicians are still testing the notebook, we've been testing with Prime95 for CPU/RAM test, and together with Furmark + Heaven benchmark for 3D tests and so far there hasn't been any stability issues with original display driver installed. According to our technicians, problem was experienced with driver release 361.43 however, we will continue to test your notebook and see confirm for any issues we experience.

    That's good news, right?

We know that 361.43 is a bad release in a number of ways, so running stable with a different version is good.

    NVIDIA 361.43 blackscreen during installation

Maybe ask them if they can test run 359.00/.06/.12 to see if it's stable?

    Yes and no.
361.43 works great on my blade14 even with sleep
on my m18x with 2x680s, it worked great as long as I was plugged in. Battery=BSOD

However on MSI, I got the same behavior as with previous driver releases, and specific to GT80 -- constant "Video drive stopped working and recovered"

I guess my fear is that they are going to say "we only support the original driver", which is unacceptable by me especially in gaming futureproof, SLI support, etc. Furthermore, I experienced the crashes even with the original driver, although less frequent, but I did get them with sleep (this was far less frequent, but did happen)

It's best they test and get it fixed unless you want to do it yourself. Nvidia broke support for sleep/hybrid shutdown for a number of us and there is no fix from them. We actually tested over and over (I tested directly with nvidia) until we found out about removing hibernation would fix the issue.

361.43 are know to be one of the worst drivers currently released. Even if they do work in some machines, they don't work as intented on others. Hopefully MSI can find/spot something they can fix so you can use the latest drivers without issue.

Until nvidia breaks them again hahahaha.

As for dell service, of course that's a good thing they have going for them. But all warranties and services and experiences are completely different. Aside from time, I haven't had negative issues with RMA with MSI or Asus so far.

Keep an eye out and keep asking every other day, to see what's up with your machine.

Use MSI BurnRecovery to make a bootable USB 3.0 32GB flash drive image of the Windows Recovery partition. That's the first backup to do, immediately upon opening your laptop

And, I am not joking about immediately. Several times over the years we have had someone post that their boot drive failed and they hadn't done their backup of their Recovery partition, and they didn't have a way to restore their OS.

The 2nd backup would be after you do all of your Windows updates, and basic Windows OS configuration, and basic tools installs.

I use Macrium Reflect Free to make an image copy of the boot drive, and save it to an external USB 3.0 drive. That way I can restore to that version, saving lots of time redoing all the Windows updates, configuration, and installs. And, it's a small image that's quick to restore.

Macrium Reflect will create a USB 3.0 boot flash drive, 4GB? - I use a 16GB with other stuff saved on it. Boot and select your Macrium Reflect image off your USB 3.0 drive and it takes just a few minutes to restore.

Then I also make image backups as I go through the rest of my installs, and then backup about once a week to an image so I can recover quickly from a dead boot drive.

It happened recently - one of my 128GB RAID0 drives started going bad, and I was able to break the RAID0, and restore to a single 128GB drive to find the bad drive of the pair.

    Macrium Reflect Free
    Current Version: 6.1.1023 (11 January 2016)

Excellent, thanks! I'll check it out.

    Edit:

Macrium looks really good, especially the differential images, but I'd like to find a solution which will also work on my linux servers.

General Questions: What do I do with my new GT80 TITAN SLI-258 ??? its the 970m SLI version

I know it's not the GTX 980m or GTX 980 version.... but how do I tune it? How do I optimize it for games?

What games do you recommend? etc

I just did a partition clone on my GT80 using Clonezilla and saw between 5-10 GB/min. I think the USB3 HDD was the choke point. It took about an hour to do 4 partitions + MBR, and verification of the image.

    I'm going to keep looking...

Looks like MSI is basically telling me that I am screwed on a computer I paid $3700 for:

    MIS Tech:
We have not found any issues in terms of stability using our driver release, we can confirm that both GPU are working healthy, we also recommend installing our original operating system image, what looks to be installed is a non OEM version of windows which was also missing the Intel ME driver, please let us know if you'll like for us to reinstall back to factory condition. Thank you.

Ask then for a replacement then. If they have to wipe it they might as well replace it.

Tools like this usually work at the speed of the media, not the efficiency of the software.

I wouldn't be comparing speeds of different software utilities except between your own hardware.

You came to look for what we are using, and we told you, so give it a try and see if you like it in comparison to clonezilla.

clonezilla is a good tool, I have used it before, but when I was needing to work with GPT/UEFI systems it wasn't ready, and Macrium Reflect was, so I started using that.

Cloning software is a matter of personal preference for it's interface, immediate need, and functional availability at the time you need it :)

I would take MSI up on their offer to reinstall the OS, and make a copy of the new recovery volume with MSI BurnRecovery when you get it.

I try to let people know, time and again, that the vendors like MSI put a lot of time into configuring and testing the images they ship with.

You aren't going to improve on their install by doing a "clean install" from MS media, it just won't happen.

What was the bug your filed to RMA the laptop?

What was happening to you that they cannot duplicate?

What are the instructions you gave them to duplicate and debug your problem?

Don't give up yet, work with them while the laptop is there, it's not going to get better unless you help them duplicate the problem so they can fix it.

Reloading the OS isn't the same as replacing the computer. You never know what issues that unit has.

RMA's usually don't give you a new computer anyway, they give you a return that they have refurbed.

You gave them a used computer, so you will get a used computer in return.
