I applaud your choice and I believe it is a wise one. However, I still plan on purchasing the Cooler Master Sf-19 V2 USB 3.0 version If I can and testing it with both positive and negative air flow to see if it will benefit me. I will of course post the results.

If I do not need the extra us ports, would you recommend me getting the 2.0 version? Also, anyone with the new GT80S, how nasty (in a good way) is it, performance wise?

I have seen reviews of laptops sliding on this pad, do you have that issue?

If you do not desire or need the USB 3.0 ports, and you feel comfortable with the price and engineering, I would recommend that you order immediately as the units are usually sold out through pre-order before the in stock date even arrives.

Not sure what they mean by "sliding". I sure hope mine doesn't slide since it's 4 feet off the ground, on a sliding shelf, it would be a long fall! The only thing I could think of is it is just barely big enough, so maybe if you bump it or vibration could knock one of the notebook feet over the edge? That hasn't happened to me yet, but that would be one downside.

Here was a picture of my bedroom setup from another thread. The other notepal I use is in the living room on a small table in front of a recliner. You can see it sitting on the sliding shelf here.

Forget everything else, lash that GT80 to the stand and the stand to the desk!! Yipe!

My GT80 slips easily from the stand as it's oversized for the stand.

My Cooler Master Ergostand III has 2 feet up front sticking up to hold the laptop from sliding, but if the top is touched or bumped it will pop up and over those 2 feet and whoosh!!, down the stand.

Wow, that's precarious to stay the least. I hope you got the accident insurance

I have that one and I don't have the sliding problem with the GT80. I did have it with my previous GT60, but it was due to the leg supports of the chasis being a bit bigger than the actual cooler, so it was sort of... tilted.

Anyways with the GT80 it works fine.

If the U3 being barely big enough concerns you I would go with the other one. It does barely fit on it with the pads. Works great for me but I can see how it may bother someone else.

    Hey guys (and Gals)!

    I've got the GT80s SLI-002 i7 6820HK.

Can I get some advice on how to overclock this baby to 4GHZ?

I've never overclocked before, I do NOT know what I am doing.

I've read around the board and know you have change the voltage...

I'm intimidated. And scared. This is my work computer and I can't afford to brick it/damage it.

Any help/step by step process or advice would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

Then my advice at this stage would be don't do it. You have more than enough power right now for anything you might chuck at it - and if its your work PC then I would not risk it to be honest.

With the Coolermaster notepad U3 plus (and not using the included fans) my i7-4720HQ GT80 idles in windows at about 42c for the GPU (high performance setting). Under heavy load it will reach mid 80c. The GPU's vary, usually reaching mid 70c under load (one runs slightly hotter than the other). Never used this laptop without the cooler, so I could not tell you how much difference it makes.

Using the Targus cooling pad for 18" laptops, my laptop usually idles around 35-36c with laptop fans at normal speed. With no coolong pad, it idles around 39-42c. Peak load, such as fallout 4, im seeing 50-55c with the cooling pad and laptop fans maxed.

A lot of it depends on other factors. When I set my laptop and cooling pad on any type of cloth mat, temps go up 5-7c because the cooling pad circulates poorly. When my cooling pad is set to minimum, temps rise 2-4c.

Definitely try to place your laptop and cooling pad on a wood or plastic surface. Helps a lot with temps. Sorry if this is info you already know. Also make sure you get the type of cooling pad you want. Some are flat surface (targus) and some are angled (coolermaster).

Mason should be sending me some bios pics so we can see what's possible. 4ghz should be easy unless the stock paste can't hold up to it.

    4ghz should be a breeze :)

Just use the Intel XTU easy slider section, and set all 4 cores to 40x, and leave the cache multiplier at default.

    Apply.

Save - name it something simple like 4.0ghz - 40x cores + stock

And, it will automagically set 4.0ghz at boot - until you crash, then you need to go into the XTU program again and select the Profile and Apply again - no Save needed, you already Saved the Profile before.

You can also do it in the BIOS, it should be "obvious" how ;)

I would think it would be easier to use XTU to find the tuning sweet spots, and then lock it in in the BIOS for repeated use.

You can work to it either way but since nothing has be displayed on the bios I figured it would be benificial to see their recommendations as you test to work out the most stable and efficient clock. Just how I usually work and learn the whole story.

You already know I am not a sold on XTU completely either after seeing what it can screw up too.

hi guys, correct me if im wrong. this laptop's airflow are inhale from bottom and exhale from 2 side-vents and 2 back-vents.
does this mean we cant put this laptop on bed or on our lap because it will close the inhale vent?
and since it inhale from bottom vent, i assume the fan will easily accumulate dust from below instead if it inhale from 1 side and exhale from the bottom and the other side?

    2nd question:
i want to update to the newest BIOS. The manual said I have to prepare USB drive to put the binary file. can I flash the bios update using sd card instead of usb drive?

    :D :D :D :DI received my 002 model (980m sli) :D :D :D :D
Im a bit confused on which drivers I should and should not install and what software is necessary/unnecessary... my laptop came with almost no drivers installed... :-(
Should I just use the driver disk. If i do that, what drivers need updating?

    https://www.msi.com/product/notebook/support/GT80S-6QE-Titan-SLI.html#down-utility&Win10 64

The IGP button does not do anything right now, it just turns the screen off... Was it disabled in the 980m version as well?

Also, the Blueray reader/writer sounds like a lawnmower... Is this normal, is there a way to dampen the noise?

    Thanks,
    Mason

If your GT80S from Xotic PC didn't come with a complete MS/MSI system OS installation, complain to them and ask what else needs to be installed, you paid them to do this for you, you / we shouldn't need to futz around with this.

Also you paid for a system OS backup USB drive, I assume it should have all that stuff on there, and somehow didn't get loaded onto your GT80S.

    Ask Xotic PC before proceeding.

    @pat@XOTICPC @Alex@XOTICPC

Also ask them about the Blu-ray drive vibration / noise, the drive shouldn't sound like that, my GT80 SLI-263 LG BU20N is completely silent, and I have put 100's of optical disc's through it.

it did but i have seen that type of flashdrive before -- im moving it to a known brand USB asap.

It came with a drivers disk with software and drivers . I'm loading that right now but don't know what software is worth keeping or not. Also don't know what updates to install.

Never recieved game codes for either bulletts or blades or tomb raider.

    Regarding audio..

Yes, the audio is tinny and it seems like the subwoofer took a permanent vacation.

Ive struggled with this for a year...but now its like theres a boombox in this thing ( without losing the highs)

The fix is to download and install the alienware 18 realtek audio driver. There a re presets to choose from in the new audio options and this driver gets 5x the bass than the intended msi driver.

Just passing this on because it changed my experience with this laptop

Any notebook with any vents at all on the bottom, whether inlet or outlet for air, should only be run on a hard surface. I feel very strongly about this. I know lots of people do it, but it is never a good idea to block any vents, doesn't matter if they are inlet or outlet air.

What I did was get a 12"x8"x1/4" plastic cutting board from Walmart. It works great for those few times I want to run it on carpet or a bed, couch etc. It works great for travel since it fits perfectly in my Everki Titan bakcpack.

I also have a lapdesk I use for when I'm at home but I never carry this thing with me anywhere. The one I have is very similar to this one. Make sure you buy the biggest one you can as you will need the extra space if you want to use a mouse!

Can you please post a link to the specific download you used?

Dell is a big place to grovel through to find stuff, and there are likely lots of different downloads for Realtek drivers, other than the one you found.

Unplug USB devices, and disable devices not used in the BIOS. Take optical media out of the optical drive.

Enable Fastboot in the BIOS - not the same or related to Fast Startup in Windows - also disable that by disabling Hibernation - powercfg /h off as Administrator, then reboot.

BIOS time should be around 3.7 seconds or less.

You can download those 3dmark benchmarks from futuremark.com for free - everyone shares the "free" level version results because noone buys the real deal :)

There are some that do, but they are few and far between, and also post the free level results, as most people need those for comparison anyway.

The point was, the version of the OS backed up on the USB drive is also likely the same "partial" install you found on your laptop. So both need updating.

The driver disk drivers should have been installed on the laptop, and should also be in the restorable OS backup.

The way to find updates for what you need is to look at the Programs and Features control panel for what is installed, what the app/driver names are and what versions are installed.

Then with that info, go to the support area for your laptop - and newer laptops - when they release - to find the latest version from MSI.

Then for things like Steelseries keyboard, Killer Wireless, I go directly to the OEM site and download from there.

Especially the Killer Wireless Suite, as the latest version has a fix for Windows 10 1535 disconnect issues.

Resizing app from MSI is a good tool to set the desktop scaling - but you can do it yourself from the Display Control Panel - I think MSI made the tool because too many people were complaining about fuzzy text and distorted menus and had no idea they could fix that in the Display Control Panel.

The Windows default used to be 125% scaling, that causes fuzzy text and misaligned menus text with some applications, and MSI Sizing app does the same, default of 125%

100% scaling is where I would normally set it for close up work at 1080p. That produces the clearest text and there is no scaling issue with menu's.

I saw those postings about XTU and the new Clevo's with Skylake, I also saw postings in the ThrottleStop thread about it not being compatible with Skylake / Windows 10, so I would hold judgement on XTU until they get updates to address Skylake / Windows 10 issues.

If you have time, please file the bugs you found with XTU as that is vital to getting the bugs fixed.

On Windows 8.1 and Broadwell/Haswell, I have had no issues with the recent versions - and in the past when I have had problems I have filed the bugs and they got fixed.

One bug was caught because I run without a pagefile, and someone on the XTU team built against the debug libraries that require a pagefile for memory dumps, and accidentally pushed that build to publication / production.

They fixed that bug quickly :)

There are issues to be fixed and they have had plenty of time so I don't see quick judgement. I had issues before with settings not recovering and settings compounding or not taking when comitted when I used it on my GT80. So it has issues, we all know this and sure it can be used but after a while of babysitting it becomes questionable. After learning what Throttle Stop can do it has all the benefits and more so it just makes sense to me. Plus uncleweb is a supporting member and listeners to input for continued development so the deck is just stacked on our side of you make use of it.

Regardless I was answering a question about overclocking, just responding how I would do it.

    They both have their place.

And, both have had several occasions where bugs needed addressing, they are both at the cutting edge of supporting new CPU's so that is to be expected.

The technical people I can show TS, but even they balk at the information they need to learn / digest in order to make full use of it.

XTU makes it simple. Not as simple as the laptop vendors apps, but simpler than TS, and that gives them comfort in OC'ing.

There are many levels of experience involved when helping people OC, and TS is at the level I usually let them find themselves, most people aren't ready for it.

XTU is much easier for a novice to use, and even then I have had to repeat instructions and give them multiple images to get the idea across to them.

When XTU added the "Basic Tuning" section, with 1 slider for all cores and 1 slider for cache, I thought they were being a bit too hand holdy, but as it turns out, when novices look at that view it's much less daunting than the "Advanced Tuning" section is to them.

There are some TS features that for some CPU's offer performance improvements that XTU doesn't address, but AFAIK none of that applies to the GT80(S)'s CPU's.

Is there something that TS can unlock for GT80(S)'s CPU performance that XTU can't?

That's cool, I assumed that they held back some features for the paid version.

It's just that you were having trouble raising $15 for a game earlier, so I thought that money spent on the 3dmark stuff would be better spent on a new game :)

Also achievements! :D I bought 3dmark for cheap on Steam sale a while ago too, I am very happy to give a couple bucks to help support the program. I've spent enough time using it over the years I felt the need to buy it at least once.
