Alright guys, I have two questions about peripherals here. I already have Astro A50s that I use with my Xbox and PC, but I am looking for a non wireless headset specifically for my computer.
1st question: I have an external sound card, the sound blaster x-fi surround 5.1 Pro. If I were to buy the Astro A40s, would I be able to skip on buying the mixamp bundle considering and use this sound card as my amp?
2 question: What are your recommendations for a gaming headset? Willing to spend around $150-$250 on another headset.
Thanks, you are all always great help!

decided to return the 29th anniversary dominator G72S with the 980X. As nice as it was (G-sync impressed) the mechanical keyboard would be missed. plus with my base stations now properly installed i haven't had any glitches with my Vive for the last two days. Seems to play every game I throw out it in VR without a sweat. only using a minor overclock of 100core, 150 memory with it. restored vbios to stock.

Hey Guys,
i brought the MSI GT80 with the i7-4720HQ and SLI 980M for under 2000€. It will arrive next Week. So i´ve got some questions.
1. Ist the i7 fourth Generation powerfull enough for the next years?
2. Is it correct that MSi will provide MXM Support for the next two Generations?
3. When it will arrive. How should i proceed?
Update Firmware, Bios, Upgrade to Windows 10, Install Drivers?
4. Should i replace the Thermal Compound with high quality
I hope you will answer my questions. Thanks in advance.hmscott likes this. -
To be quick.
1- i think yes
2- that what msi said, yes.
3- you can update every think, for win10 as you like, there is who dont like it etc etc, as me i have win 10 i like it, i use O&O shutup10 to stop telemetry cortana etc etc, but with win 10 we have problem with sleep and hibernation foctions.
4- i think there is no need, i did a remplacement with thermal grizzly kryo and minus pad 8 no gain... Same themp.
I hope i replied to your interrogations
Regards.
By the way did any one tested ashes of the singularity with dx12 and sli? I got a bad perf 24fps :shmscott likes this. -
I'm sure you will find this model fascinatingI shall try my best to answer your questions.
1) Yes, definitely. If recent benchmarks show anything, people with even older 2nd gen CPUs are fine for gaming. The core i7 4720hq runs at up to 3.6ghz quad core, that's plenty fast for gaming as it isI have no problems running any game so far and it will definitely work for years to come.
2) We don't know if it means support for two total generations (meaning 980m and new 1080m) or two additional generations (1080m and 1180m for example). I am at least confident it will support 1080m. The reason we don't know if future generations are a sure thing, is because we don't know if MXM will disappear for the new generations after Pascal.
3) I'd say you should definitely get the latest VBIOS, BIOS and EC firmware. In my opinion it is a must have, because I did encounter an issue where sometimes it wouldn't boot properly and the screen would remain black. That was fixed with updates and now always boots because it does a PCIe retry function. Windows 10 does work with the model and I have run that for a while now. That being said, I did have a lot of problems when updating because Sound Blaster Cinema 2 is no longer suported, but I prefered it over Nahimic, so I had to update everything, then downgrade realtek drivers until the last version that supports Sound Blaster, then launch Sound Blaster in compatibility mode.
Heavily recommended: Disable Hibernation/sleep. These currently cause crashing issues with nvidia drivers, because nvidia broke their drivers after 353.62.
Use windows 10 only if you have reason to, or you want to. For me the only reason I am using it is for DX12, but no game has come out that uses it so far, except Tomb Raider, and it doesn't support SLI in DX12 so it's useless hahaha
4) I will say yes. If you are confident with repasting, you should definitely be careful and try your best, specially for the CPU. I also would recommend you to undervolt your CPU after trying it out. The GPUs tend to have much better cooling than the CPU.
Things you should know: It is normal that one GPU has higher temp than the other. This is in part because the GPUs have a mirrored heatsink arrangement with the pipes, but the GPUs themselves are both on the same side/direction, so one GPU can run around 8 to 10 degrees higher. Normal temps I have seen with many users and in my case, have the GPU temps about 65 GPU1 and 75 GPU2 celsius. If a game is very demanding, GPU temps can rise more and reach the 80s for GPU2.
CPU temps are on the hot side, running up to 80s for regular games and can reach 90s on the demanding games. This is why it's recommended to repaste. So far this has not affected me though.
After everything is updated and set, run some benchmarks to check your scores and temps. We recommend also having Hwmonitor for temps/utilizations, MSI Afterburner and MSI's Silent Option for additional fan control.hmscott likes this. -

Gpu1 980m
Gpu2 980m
But the perf its like single gpu lol 24-27 fps
Msibafterburner dont works for dx12 to monitor the gpus usage and temps.
With hwmonitor i see usage gpu1 70 as gpu2 76
I have GOG version, its have integrated bench. -

You can update the BIOS, EC firmware, and drivers when the unit arrive, but please also be sure to make recovery discs for future use (just in case you want to upgrade to a better SSD).
Finally, you can upgrade the thermal compound to IC diamond which can help with a few degrees. -
I have a GT80 SLI 980M Broadwell that has been plagued kernel video driver crashes with the last several Nvidia drivers. The odd thing I noticed was that they only seem to occur when I am on battery. This morning I booted up without being plugged into AC and I had two in about one min. Then I plugged in the charger and have not had one for the last 3 hours. I have disconnected the charger, but have not had one occur. So maybe it is random, but I do know that I have not had one while plugged up, only while unplugged.
It seems odd that this is happening only on battery for me and seems to go away when I plug up.
I have sleep and hibernation off.
The other odd thing is that I have set close lid to do nothing, but when I close the lid, it shuts down/tries to sleep. when I open the lid it boots from scratch. It seems that the power settings are not saving from boot to boot. -

And the GPU can overclock +135,+300 -
Ok thanks.
Does my GT80 support GSYNC and has it Thermal compound paste or a pad?
Thanks in advance -
The MXM card have thermal past for the gpu, and pad for the Vram. -
Ok good to know. Where can i find the unlocked vbios for this cards?
-
Maybe he meant to say there are no 18 inch gsync pannels at this time.
However if you use an external monitor that supports gsync it will work so FYI.

So is the current nvidia driver not safe or wise to use if you are on a Windows 10 system?
I just bought my machine and it only had a windows 10 option so I am considering returning and waiting further if nvidia's drivers are so wonky that it can actually be dangerous to update them in Windows 10 for sli setups -

SILENT FAN CONTROL DOESN"T WORK ON MY COMPUTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
I picked up the -002 version and definitely liking it so far.
The screen is definitely solid even though there's no gsync. I was able to get the monitor up to 100hz without any artifacts so far in testing.
Ugh bad news about Silent Fan Control not working...Are there are any other ways to try to control fan monitoring? It'd be nice to have another option rather than 100% full fans for programs that don't need 100% but could use more than default.
Good to hear that it should be safe to try the new nvidia drivers. I made sure to disable sleep and hibernation right away. -

Are there any other programs that can modify fan control besides the Silent Option app which doesn't appear to work with the Windows 10 + Skylake combo? I assume the answer is probably now but was curious.
Looking at the MSI forums some people are saying to try "Dragon Center" (not Dragon Gaming Center) which evidently is out for the MSI Vortex but looks like some laptop owners have been able to use that successfully with the Window 10 + Skylake combo. I may give that a shot as this laptop is a winner for me if I can have proper fan control.Last edited: Apr 25, 2016mason2smart likes this. -

I can confirm that the Dragon Center app that is listed for Vortex does work on the GT80s (custom fan settings and all).
Just ran a stress test for 5 minutes at 3.87ghz where Max Temp was 77F and avg was 60 with the custom fan settings. Is that about right for these Skylake processors (my last laptop was Haswell and they seemed to run a little hotter)? -

DOES THE EXISTANCE OF THE LED COLOR CHANGER PROVE IT COULD THEORETICALLY CHANGE COLORS?
Thanks,
Mason -
As to the LED Color Changer, those settings will not have any impact on the Laptop. In essence, this is a Vortex app that has a number of Vortex only features, but it does allow laptop fan control as well as let you run a few diagnostics.
As to the sport mode, my experience is that if you use the Dragon Control Manger that came with our laptop to set the sport mode, the machine will shift to the 3.87ghz overclock rather than the 4.0 ghz overclock. I had similar concerns.
Other method would be to just handle overclocking in the intel xtu (which is also how I checked which sport overclock mode was in effect). -
