I'm getting some issues that recently happened in the past day or two.

I am getting random freezes where I can interact with the app in focus, but the taskbar and any other app in the background are frozen to where i cant click, drag, or close them. I haven't installed anything lately, and I've already run sfc /scannow, and checked for malware which both came back clean.

other issue: I am getting what looks like screen flickering when I lower the brightness to anything but max when I first start up the laptop for the first 2-3 minutes. The flickering is very faint and it almost looks like the noise you get with a poor ground or a fan on the same circuit or something. However, unplugging the AC adapter doesn't clean it up.

    Any ideas?

lol yeah having this issue right now with a replacement razer blade pro-- probably sat in a shed for 3 years. Brand new replacement doesnt work unless plugged in---cant even get to the bios and they are sitting there telling me its a windows driver issue. LOL

The battery in the blade pro isnt warrantied --- the battery in the MSI, however, is.

FWIW, I haven't had the issue at all today. The only thing I changed on my system was I am not using the same mouse that I do at home (Red Dragon Mammoth gaming mouse).

Does anyone else have player or a loose SPDIF connector?

My connector wobbles and has some play in it. Has me concerned about using it for digital audio out as it is incredibly difficult to plug in or unplug SPDIF cables. Is it possible to output digital audio through the headphone jack?

    Buy a Macintosh

Apple gives a tight integration between hardware and software, which won't happen with non-Apple hardware. The plug and play and low user requirement for systems admin work to keep their Macs running is lost on unsupported hardware.

Hackintoshes aren't legal, certainly in the US, and will get you in trouble now and down the road; want to work at Apple? Forget about it if you hackintosh publicly.

    Don't mess with Apple

This is why trying to use Windows 10 as a stable platform for work and play isn't a good idea.

Windows 10 offers nothing but instability and no useful features over Windows 8.1/7.

MS is going to keep fixing, adding features, updating, and fiddling with Windows 10 - rendering users PC's non-functional for the foreseeable future - look to MS announcements for updates as warnings to you of impending doom  o_O

You could ask MSI...they are the only definitive source for answers for such questions.

From the description it is the Nvidia TDR fix, but it looks like a sweaty procedure, and MSI includes a how to recover from a flash bricking, so you should read that and prepare for that eventuality before proceeding with the BIOS update.

"Description Disable PEG ASPM for Nvidia TDR.
Note To complete the Processor Microcode update, please follow the SOP below to perform BIOS update twice with UEFI BIOS Utility.
If notebook can't boot in system after I update new BIOS,what should I do?"

The above link is for 4th gen Haswell CPU's BIOS update, here is the link to the 5th gen Broadwell BIOS update, it looks the same, but it's best to go to the correct link for your model:
    https://www.msi.com/Laptop/support/GT80-2QE-Titan-SLI-5.html#down-bios

This is a dumb question, but do I have to update the BIOS twice? It mentions updating the BIOS twice on the note. Does that mean I should reflash that version of the BIOS since I already have it?

Yes, that's what it says. IDK if that actually works

Whenever I have had to install a BIOS update of the same version, but a different firmware package load - like a new RAID firmware or a new IMEI firmware, I have needed to use a custom command line flash while booted from a DOS boot.

I would ask MSI to answer how it's supposed to work flashing the same BIOS 2x in a row, as the BIOS based flash utility usually ignores refreshing the same bin file.

Here's a sample flashing a new IMEI after already flashing an older version of the same BIOS number/serial.

...Reboot back into DOS like in step 6 through 9. The new command is AFUDE561 E1812IMS.119 /ME

Need some advice on fan control / speeds with my GT80. Now that the weather here in The Netherlands is getting warmer, the default fan profiles are not really cutting it (hit 92c on the CPU playing Witcher 3 yesterday evening). The hardware fan button is also overkill, as max speed is too much, and too loud. Its weird also as when it hit 92c, the fan was still quieter than if I use the hardware max fan button....

With my GT70-20D I remember there was a 3rd party fan control software. Using that I used to set the fan at 70% for gaming (raising automatically if needed), and that was just perfect.

What is the best way of doing similar with the GT80? Any other advice on how to manage temps in the warmer weather would be most appreciated!

    Hi all Gt80 users!

It would be possible to "mix" video cards? Lets say to have only one 980 notebook + 860M and the last one using it only as a dedicated PhysX card?

That's the thing - I don't need the fan running faster than 100% (assuming that 100% is what you get when you press the hardware max fan button).

What I want is the ability to set it faster than I would get normally with the default profile, but not as fast as 100% from the hardware button. Probably around 70% would do it.

Try silent Option and create a custom fan profile. As weather gets wearmer, I would advise to indeed use stronger fan profile. I think on default settings, the fans only go up to 60%, and the turbo fan button is 100%.

The fan profile is automated by the EC firmware. You typically do not have full control over fan behavior and speeds the way you do in a desktop/tower.

    Indeed I do.

Cheers. The silent fan app did the trick. Indeed, the default the max fan speed for GPU and CPU is only 60%. Not great for the warmer weather.

I've changed the profiles for both my CPU and GPU to the following, and its made a difference of about 10c under max load in Witcher 3 (CPU hitting 81-82c now, instead of 90c before). This is with ambient room temps of approx 25-27c. The noise is of course louder, but not nearly as bad as 100% from the hardware button. By kicking in the relatively higher fan speeds earlier, it helps to prevent the temps from creeping so high in the first place.

EDIT: Left the 3rd step at default in the end (36% instead of 50%), as it was spinning up a bit too much in Windows with it set to 50%

Honestly the first thing I have done on every boot since getting this laptop is to turn nahmic off (exit the running task from the taskbar). All it does for me is make the sound quieter and more muffled, plus with some games it does not play nice.

Still running Win8.1 at the moment here. Not yet looked into the possibility of putting on SB instead of the nahmic trash. Although to be honest with you, once nahmic is turned off, everything sounds just fine to me! :)

I agree in that regard. I didn't like nahimic either. I turned it off. It's just that sound blaster makes everything nicely loud without distorting, that one day I got fed up and fought my way to reinstalling it ahahaha :)
