Yeah, I know, it's confusing, but it also doesn't say 1080m, or Pascal, or NEXT generation, or anything else other than what it is, current / latest generation 980 desktop mobile.

Nvidia just released the desktop GPU's, they and their partners have a lot work to do to get that all going smoothly. It takes time to focus on one major release before you are ready for another.
I don't know what the next potential announcement venue might be.
It might be a simple vendor release / announcement, since the mobile parts only ship inside laptops.
Nvidia might do a simultaneous launch from their web site, pointing to all their partner sites with new laptops.
Newest rumor suggests October... or next year.Last edited: May 30, 2016mason2smart likes this. -

Asus announced what seems to be a copy of the Titan in the form of their liquid cooled laptop
Gx800 has 2x 1080 in sli and desktop i7-k CPU and A MECHANICAL KEYBOARD
http://www.anandtech.com/show/10376/computex-2016-asus-republic-of-gamers-10-year-press-conference -
The GX800 isn't a copy of the GT80, it's another implementation of 980 desktop mobile SLI.
Water-cooled, 660w power for higher performance, and just because it has a mechanical keyboard doesn't make it a copy
The GX800 looks lower profile, we don't have any good photo's of it yet from the front, so it's not clear what the layout might be, but if it's like the GX700 single 980 desktop mobile GPU, it's a traditional layout.
Also, the GX800 only has a 4k 17" G-sync display
I posted GX800 Computex info earlier in the GT80S 980 SLI thread, as it's a closer "copy" of that model

It looks like Nvidia already presented at Computex 2016, today, and there is no mention of Mobile Pascal for laptops.

Hi guys I'm a proud owner of a GT80 Titan and just now joined the forum
I was planning on upgrading my laptop with new components (CPU, GPU, RAM, etc...) and thought I'd ask here for advice as you guys seem to be experts.
I've been hearing rumors of a possible 1080m release so I hope that doesn't take long to happen. What about other stuff like CPU though? Is it upgradeable and what should I look forward to as the best replacement for the default one. Also RAM if I even need to upgrade that.
I basically want to run Vive games (including Elite Dangerous) at the highest settings while mainting good performance (60-90 fps depending on the game of course).
I apologize if some of these questions were answered earlier at some point.hmscott likes this. -
Sorry man, I find it very hard to believe you spent $2k-$3k on a brand new laptop, and have no clue it has a non-upgradeable CPU.
-
What model number is it? It's SLI-NNN, like SLI-002, or SLI-263.
-
Well, you lucked into the "best" 980m SLI GT80 model
That's the one I had and recently sold, now I'm waiting on the SLI 1080/m model to come.
You can upgrade memory easily, I would recommend getting G.Skill 4 x 8GB - 32GB 2133mhz kit, cheap and helps noticeably with performance.
Upgrade the 2 x 128GB SSD's to 4 x 1TB X400 M.2 SATA, and make a 4TB RAID0.
The GPU's are going to be upgradable to Pascal, someday, but so far Nvidia is focusing on the desktop GPU's and Datacenter GPU's, so we are all still waiting.
The upgrade kits will likely follow after the first Pascal GT80/GT73/GT83 (new model numbering) comes out.
But, it sounds like you have all you need to game right now, so what are you waiting for?
-
Appreciate the info man. I think I'll keep the SSD and HDD as I don't really need that extra storage space, but will probably change RAM once the new mobile GPUs roll out.
I just hope the CPU doesn't cause a bottleneck. Most games are GPU intensive though so I should be okay for a while.
I've already set up a Vive room with a 4x3 m^2 play area, and so far so good with this laptop. -
The 5950HQ you have is the best CPU so far, they don't really differ by much, and all sustain about the same long term frequency for constant loads, about 3.5ghz-3.6hz vs 4.0ghz for short term boost.
My benchmarks OC'd on CPU and GPU compete with laptops with desktop CPU - graphics scores, FPS, and actual usage are the same. The CPU won't benchmark as high, but most apps/games won't notice.
OC the CPU to 4 core 40x, undervolt -50mV to start, up to -125mV, and GPU core OC +135 and VRAM +350, and you are stable and set up for best performance - typical OC - YMMV.
Have fun
-
I was going to ask about OCing next but I see you're already one step ahead.
I guess it's about time I put this thing through its paces >

Doing ok....not on it though cause I got to memorize an entire physics course in like 4 days for an SAT physics exam. Gets a little warm on the processor side of things during complex workloads but it plays most games just fine
I can still oc it to 3.9 ghz Stable. Thinking of just upgrading to the gt83 if it has pascal dual 1080 in sli

The article you linked details some of the major specs of the new GT83 / GT73, and both have the same Maxwell GPU's, no Pascal.
And, neither ship till August, so that suggests Mobile Pascal isn't going to be out until late this year, or next year.
"MSI’s new GT83 Titan SLI and GT73 Titan SLI laptops are both built ready for the best of virtual reality gaming and are equipped with the SLI platform design.
The GT83 Titan SLI packs a NVIDIA GeForce GTX980 SLI graphics solution and the extreme 3+1 of 4K display surround mode delivering true-to-life gaming experience. The GT73 Titan SLI is the lightest mobile SLI with dual GTX980M SLI level graphics, and also supports single GTX980 top-tier mobile graphics, making it ideal for gamers looking for a smooth gameplay at 4K settings under 3-monitor surround mode.
Pricing and Availability: The GT83 will become available in August of this year and will retail for $4,500 USD. The GT73 will also become available in August and retail for $2,500 USD."Last edited: May 31, 2016 -
Looks like I was right about the GT73 being the new photo.
Resale value of 980M SLI just went out the window. I'll be ditching this AW18 before the value drops too far.hmscott likes this. -
-
The GT73 at $2,500 USD, is that for 980m SLI or single 980 model?
I would assume $2,500 USD is for the single 980 model, and the 980m SLI will be over $3,000 USD same as previous 980m SLI sku's.Last edited: May 31, 2016 -
1080m might just be right around the corner in a few months so these laptop will likely come with a configuration with those. cpu though however isnt great, i am very interested to see if internal design of mobo/heatsink changed for GT83 over 80s and gx800 over gx700, more cpu cooling the better.
@hmscott just checked gx800 seems PSU is one for each. laptop and water cooler, so means they're doing two 980 and a 4.4ghz cpu with just 330w ain't gonna work lmao. -
It's anybody's guess what will really go down, when Pascal mobile for laptops really does ship, but I don't think Asus / MSI / etc would be putting out another generation of Maxwell laptops, and not expect to have at least 3-6 months sales window for them.
Pascal release date may be announced before the end of the year, but I would be surprised to see any Pascal laptops shipping at Xmas.
We might not even get a Pascal release date in 2016, to protect Maxwell sales for Back to School and Xmas.
Feburary/March time frame for actually getting Pascal laptops in our hands seems more likely.
I would hope MSI has at least one more make-over for the GT83/(GT80) when transitioning from 980 desktop mobile SLI to 1080 desktop mobile SLI.
The new GT73 980m SLI redesign looks nice, and it would be a good home for the 1080m SLI when it is available.mason2smart likes this. -
A single 330w power supply will work fine, because the Asus GX800VG doesn't OC when it is running independantly off of Asus Hydro Overclocking System.
The Asus GX800VG will likely perform like a 980m SLI when it's off of the Asus Hydro Overclocking System. Which is awesome.
Think of it this way, off of the Asus Hydro Overclocking System the FPS will be as good or better than a single 980 or 980m SLI on one 33ow PSU.
On the Asus Hydro Overclocking System the Asus GX800VG 980 SLI GPU graphics scores and game FPS should outperform all current 980 single and 980m/980 SLI laptops, by a wide margin
The Asus GX800VG has an 18" 4k display

doubt it though. what still interest me the most is want to see how heatsink has changed especially gx800. gt83 dont think theres much change at all tbh.

MSI GT83/GT73 Titan SLI hands-on
-
GT83 looks identical outside to the GT80. Any change should be internal. They hopefully addressed the cpu cooling, and maybe m.2 ssd cooling?
mason2smart and hmscott like this. -
That and increasing the size of the the PSU were the only things I thought needed fixing, otherwise it's just another number change
mason2smart likes this. -
Yeah, but I expect a lot from a number change
hahaha. I mean look at the difference between GT70 to 72. Even 73 now magically has 2 GPUs
But you are right. A good PSU and proper CPU cooling its all it needs. Too bad I can't upgrade, no money, specially after the vive
mason2smart and hmscott like this. -
We may not find out about the changes, like a new larger PSU, until the GT83 ships in August, and unless MSI gives reviewers one early, it might take a while for user reports to confirm changes.
That should give you a good 4-5 months to save up enough
Right around that time, there should be some pretty hot rumors about Pascal laptops coming just around the corner, unless everyone expires from exhaustion from the year of anticipation

Dear Rybyk, others,
For weeks now I'm trying to install Ubuntu 14.04 next to windows 10 on my new fancy machine. I need it for the Nvidia Cuda stuff for Deep-Learning.
I tried zillions of different options in the Grub menu edit, and many, many various versions.
Every time it hangs somewhere else, a black screen, a freeze somewhere when booting, no login screen etc etc
I'm desperate. Could you help me out? I can even pay for it. Its a crime MSI did not warn that one cannot just install ubuntu on it.
Cheers, Ronald -
