I don't quite get why I'm not able to see a stable OC if temps are never really high.. It seems like GPUs aren't really being pushed uppon, yet still the driver crashes.
Could you explain?
-
GPU stability is not based on temps. You have power and thermal limits. They are related in that one causes the other.
Power is also responsible for stability. Any given set of clockspeeds need a set amount of voltage and thus uses a set amount of current. Depending on the quality of the gpu, it can sustain higher clocks at less voltage. Some can go very high on lower voltage. But this is where the silicon lottery appears. You have no control on what kind of GPU you get.
It all boils down to potential and heat once you unlock and mess with power.source144 likes this. -
That's why I am suggesting getting it replaced. It's quicker to swap for another unit with the re-seller if you are in the return window - sorry I don't recall all the details or whether this is an option open to you.
The only other choice is to use the warranty to replace one or both of the GPU's under RMA.
That's why I am trying to impress upon you the need to be able to demonstrate the failure - screen shot of the Nvidia message that the display driver failed and is restarting - at stock clocks when running a benchmark, game, or other GPU intensive use.
You need to give MSI a way for them to reproduce the failure when they get the laptop, so they can determine which GPU is flaky.
You can register your laptop, and file a ticket for RMA, when you get the image/photo you can attach (in a zip file) to the ticket to show the failure.

Stressed with Furmark on stock for 10 minutes.
GPU2 got to 81*C and GPU1 got to 67*C, no crashes.
The Furmark benchmark was the same only for a shorter period of time, and I let the GPUs cool down before I started it. (Max temp was GPU2 @ 58*C, 82*C was logged on stress test)

Not a bad thing, just don't OC.
BTW, when you OC'd on GPU, did you try OC only on Core first, and leave memory at stock?
See if you can run +125 Core clock at +0 memory.
It be might only GPU memory that won't OC well. It's worth a try. -
EDIT: Firestrike crashed after 1 min on +120 clock only.
Running Furmark benchmark on stock for an hour now.Last edited: Jun 20, 2016 -
Boost only the GPU clock, it will boost up to +135 on stock, try +125 first and if that doesn't work, +100, but leave memory at +0 -
Try +100 and see if it works, then +75, leave memory at +0.
It sounds like there is something wrong with one of your cards, it's too bad you can't get it to fail at stock speeds.
Running Furmark for an hour is a waste of time.
You need to find something that fails in the first few minutes, maybe 5 minutes, at stock speeds, in order to RMA.
If you can't live with a laptop you can't OC, then see if you can return the laptop without a reason. If you are still in the return period, try that. Order from somewhere else.
So far you are stable at stock clocks, and temps aren't bad, you might consider just keeping it. OC'ing doesn't really give that much performance improvement.
You already have a 2 x 980m SLI monster laptop, it's performance is enough to run everything at stock speeds without bothering with OC'ing.
Benchmarking is just numbers, try some gaming.
And, in the long run, if you upgrade to 2 x 1080m's with MSI's GPU upgrade plan, you will be rid of the non-OC 980m's -
Before I started, I read that Furmark kills GPUs so I am testing on unigen since Firestrike crashes on any OC (even without memory OC)
Nah, I can live with it not OCing as long as it runs anything I want to play fine.
OC is just boosting it and allowing me higher quality and stable frame rate and modding games even further.
It's just that I remember when I ordered it that OC was a factor I included and why I didn't go with desktop 980. Since I heard it uses more wattage, therefore less room to OC. and the fact that I wasn't sure there was an upgrade plan for it, like with the 980m's.
And you're right, I'm not that bothered with it right now, as long is there's nothing faulty with it and it runs fine on stock, I'm more then happy!
When the time comes I'll upgrade to 1080m's
Right now I'm just testing it, finding the range I can go with it.
By the look of it, I might end up just giving up on OCing the GPUs because of the hassle.hmscott likes this. -

If that model you want is the one with 6820hk and 980m SLI then it is the most balanced model. I recommend it because you have the better CPU and the more balanced GPUs that don't cause constant battery drain like Desktop 980.
I would recommend checking out temperatures under load, to see how it will fare when gaming. If temperatures are too high (90s for CPU) and 85+ for GPUs, you are recommended to repaste.
Update to latest BIOS and EC to ensure current issues are fixed, but afterwards only upgrade if you have a specific issue.
According to MSI, upgrading HDD/RAM etc should not void warranty, and access to the HDD only takes 2 screws. If it's a 2.5inch you shouldn't have issues. If it's an msata, it won't work, you would need m.2 sata or m.2 pci express drive as far as I remember. -
Thank you so much buddy for your advice!
I was planning to go for the 980 desktop gpus model but i've read that its not balanced as you said , so i thought i get the this model ( which yes , have the 6839HK cpu and SLI 980M GPUs ) and then upgrade the GPUs when the 2nd generation of pascal GPUs.
I will upgrade the BIOS as you adviced , but can you walk me through what dose EC stand for ? And how about the Graphics drivers ?
I am really glad to know that upgrading the HDD wont void the warranty , i think the HDD i got is 2.5 one , its fitted on my GT70 Older laptop.
In terms of Temps and OC i will monitor them as you said , if i have to repaste i should ask MSI Service Provider to do it for me right ?
And i apologize if my qustions been answered before , i tried to read up but 800 pages is gona take some time!
Thank you once more , cheers -
Dose any body knows if the GT80S 6QE TITAN model comes with all the included stuff such the key caps , balm rest , backpack , etc ? i've seen some people saying they did not get any thing in the box.
Thank you -
They no longer bring the keycaps as far as I know.
maybe after you register the laptop with MSI they send you gold WASD, but I'm not sure.. -
EC stands form Embedded Controller and it's an additional file for you to download when you download the BIOS. They both appear in BIOS and Firmware respectively
Graphics card you can download the current ones from the nvidia webpage, and I would advise only update them when they fix an issue you have or a new game is out that requires them. Lately nvidia has released a lot of drivers but they often bring no benefit unless you play all games in existence hahaha.
If you need to repaste you can do it yourself but if you feel it might be too much for you, you can ask a PC expert or service provider to do so. You can ask MSI directly if the temps are too high that you experience reduced performance due to throttling, but it takes more time than doing it yourself
As for the included items, I think they still give you the backpack, palmrest and a keychain with a small plushie dragon, but I think they stopped providing the key caps. They actually had two types, golden color and red color.
Don't worry you are not missing on anythingSince the other key caps were made of metal, they felt odd to use anyways, and most users don't currently use them. You can also buy custom keycaps I believe.
As monitoring tools I recommend HWmonitor and MSI Afterburner, as well as intel XTU. They will help you see clockspeed, % utilization, throttling issues etc. Intel XTU and MSI Afterburner also help as overclocking tools, but that is optional and not advised unless you want to get down and dirty with your machine -
The best idea is to ask the retailer/seller before you buy. They can often get the "Dragon Collection" accessories for you by special order, as they are MSI resellers.
You can sometimes find these goodies on ebay, or for sale on vendor sites, use the drop-down menus to find all the available accessories:

Just curious, how does the MSI GT80 Titan with GTX 980m SLI handles Total War Warhammer?

So it will perform like on a single 980m laptop. -
! i am up for giving up the Key caps for an extra brick :3 ! guess you got it by mistake , it should have only 1

!
Regarding the updates and drivers will do as you advised , True that , nvidia some times breaks the performance with new drivers.
I have no clue what i am supposed to repaste if i had to , i am guessing the GPU cooling pad or smth , which mostly will void my warranty if i dig in deep in the PC like that. So i will leave it for MSI to do it if needed.
Palmrest , Backpack and the keychain are more than enough for me , i dont really care much about the key caps thou they do look cool !
I am not planning to OC my machine starting from day 1 xD ! i will monitor every thing as you adviced , and will decide if i want to OC or not , but i am not really with OCing a laptop for many reasons.
Thank you once more for your answer , cheers <3 -

How about Ultra modded Skyrim + 4k Textures + ENB? How does 980m SLI handles that?
-
I ran Skyrim at highest settings, limited FPS at 100 fps with 100hz refresh on a 980m SLI GT80 SLI-263.
You are coming a bit late to the game for a GT80 980m SLI, maybe wait for the Pascal models with Series 200 motherboard chipset and Kabylake.Last edited: Jun 21, 2016mason2smart likes this. -
and yes you are right not only I'm a bit late for a 980m SLI but it's the only currently spec that I can afford or the single GTX 980 no M.hmscott likes this. -
Then I realized it's really a bit late in the cycle, but you know if you find a good used one you can save some $ and get it now.
It's always the way, when you have the $ the timing isn't right, and when the timing is right the resources are in use elsewhere.
It is a good time to build a nice Pascal 1080 desktop -
LOL! If I like a desktop I wouldn't be here but I guess most people don't understand until I tell them the reason otherwise.Last edited: Jun 21, 2016 -
A desktop is always an option, get a nice compact PC, a 24" monitor, and it takes up about the same place where you are staying. A laptop seems more portable, and it is, but when it comes down to it, there is a large portion of time that can be filled up with a high power desktop GPU too.
Many of us here aren't laptop exclusive, we like the performance of both desktop / laptop, and some are even console users much of the time.
The power of the laptop / console GPU's is so far down the food chain from a desktop GPU, and the highest performance laptops aren't at any reasonable to reach price point.
Even the new 1080m/1070m laptops are going to be so overpriced when they first come out, and maybe for a quite a while after.
Maybe there will be enough 980m/970m stock around when the pascal laptops get released and prices will dip momentarily on what you want.
Good luck -

Anyways, the GT83 is just a refresh of the GT80, the only difference is its VR ready, I don't know why you want to wait for that if you already have the MSI GT80.
Maybe the GT73 is worth the wait...its a bit ligther than the GT80, hopefully since it doesnt have the mech. keyboard it will also be slightly lighter for my pocket. XDLast edited: Jun 23, 2016hmscott likes this. -

Finally some interesting results with 1080 SLI, here testing with and without the High-Bandwidth Bridge.
In 3 out of 10 games the HB bridge made huge gains in scaling over using 1 flex bridge in 4k.
Note that Nvidia's documentation says the HB bridge is only *needed* for 5k and above, but it looks like some games benefit from the HB improvement in 4k.
0:00 - Intro
1:25 - 10 series changes to SLI
2:32 - High Bandwidth bridge worth it?
3:08 - For testing
3:32 - ARMA 3 benchmarks
3:57 - Crysis 3 benchmarks
4:07 - Dirt Rally benchmarks
4:20 - Star Wars Battlefront benchmarks
4:36 - Far Cry Primal benchmarks
4:51 - Rise of the Tomb Raider benchmarks
5:07 - COD: BO III benchmarks
5:30 - The Witcher 3 benchmarks
6:21 - The Division benchmarks
7:10 - Fallout 4 benchmarks
7:41 - Is there a tangible difference?
8:18 - I have to admit...
8:52 - Dual ribbons?!
Nvidia's HB SLI Bridge - Surprising gains! GTX 1080 SLI Testing Inside!
It's also interesting to see the use of 2 flex bridges gives the same benefit as the HB bridge.
I look forward to his 1080 SLI and 1070 SLI testing with all 20+ games.Last edited: Jun 23, 2016Kevin@GenTechPC, mason2smart, Georgel and 3 others like this. -
