Yeah, that's not good. Check out the Device Manager and see if you have a Yellow flag next to the IMEI device, and see if the error is something like "failed to start".
I needed to reflash my ME section of the BIOS, which takes a special tool from MSI to do.
Hopefully it's not that, so check for the flag/error first.

I was juist watching it in XTU during overclocking and benching. Gotta try that hwinfo64. I used to have that utility many years ago

I haven't seen anyone try to replace the screen themselves with the GT80 series, as there is only 1 screen made at 18.4".
You could search this forum, and youtube, but I think you might be on your own. -
Nope. No flags whatsoever in device manager. But also no IMEI devices. Where is it supposed to be? In System devices?
-
Wow. That hwinfo64 is sweet! Much better than hwmonitor I was using until now.
It was completely different back then. This reminds me of Sysoft Sandra.hmscott likes this. -
Yes, like this, this was when it was broken, note the little Yellow Flag:
And, it looks like this when it is working:

Oh yeah. NOW I see it. No flag and seems to be working properly. But it's not the MSI driver that came with the laptop.
I wouldn't even be worried about this, but since I re-installed the system, none of the utilities are reporting fan speed. I remember seeing fan speed in XTU before the reinstall. Now it just sits at zero.
Again.. THIS is no biggie since fans seem to be working on their own just fine, but I wonder it this fan speed reporting doesn't work, what else might be broken I don't see right now.hmscott likes this. -
For next time, that's why I recommend doing a Macrium image backup of the C drive before playing around. And, run the system backup tool if there is one, but you didn't get it because you got the builders Windows image and not MSI's build image.
Didn't your builder provide a restore DVD/USB flash drive? Did you use it for the restore or did you install from the Windows 10 installer?
Fan speeds are funny on many notebooks, as I recall the MSI Dragon GameCenter works for the GT80S, you might find it and download it from MSI, that might provide the framework for fan speeds to read out in other tools again. -
What about throttlstop....does it works to you!? If yes can u share your setup? Thanks in adv!

Mine keeps CPU package throttling right off the bat when running doom.
Doom seem to be utilizing about 40-50% of each GPU -- does it have sli? Also it does glitch some on shadows and stuff -- is that also sli issue?
I generally run it at 60 Fps but I will have frequent lag spikes that drop me to the 20's
Could my CPU be the culprit? -

in my understanding MSI allow you to change the disks as you want without impacting the warranty.... you can also send back without disks at all... if you need a service.hmscott and mason2smart like this. -

If it's throttling what type is being triggered? Could be tdp due to it being a mobile cpu but only the logs will tell you.

I ran it for a few seconds then flipped back to hwinfo. I can run it for longer later but it's tough to see what is causing frame drops because it runs at 60 then suddenly drops to 20 then jumps back to 60...

Run at stock CPU/GPU and see how Doom performs.
Doom may be supporting SLI now, it was only supported AFR2 setting in Nvidia Control panel for SLI, Nvidia may have started shipping SLI support since in a new driver. You could try setting to AFR2.
You were running fine before the robot accident, since then you have complained about a lot of things, maybe stop doing using it and get it RMA'd, tell MSI about these problems in the RMA request.
Like @GTVEVO said, check what kind of throttling you are seeing, work with him on this, heading out for a while.Last edited: Jul 11, 2016mason2smart likes this. -
"pool" means the sample population, like "of all the games in the world - the pool of DX12 games is infinitesimal, insignificant, effectively round off error" - me
Look up "Gene pool" or "application pool"Last edited: Jul 11, 2016 -
The "new" GT80S comes with that "thermal shielding" so it doesn't melt the finger tips of anyone touching the top plate... the PCIE x4 SSD's can generate a lot of heat under sustained load and there is nowhere for the heat to go but UP.
You would do well to leave the thermal shielding in place, as MSI designed it to be functional. You can lift it to replace SSD's. -
Looks like thermal throttle is occurring. Remember your internal monitor pole rate is much higher than your application so to see thermal throttle flagged with temps showing not in the throttle zone is possible.
As said above lower your cpu clock and see if it will run longer without throttling.

Currently Doom does not support SLI. For some people they actually get worse performance with both GPUs enabled. For me, running it in single GPU mode, everything ultra, I still get a near constant 60fps in 1080p, so no worries there.hmscott and mason2smart like this.

Well, the 3dmarkl result in your signature says you were running @4.1Ghz

I had a HUGE problem with stuttering with Doom 2016. Also random crashes without error message. I had to uninstall and requested refund. NMow I think that it might've been caused by my overclocked LCD screen. I couldn't run 3Dmark for example. As soon as I put it back to default clock, it worked right away.hmscott and mason2smart like this.

yea it took many tries before i got it to work. the best way was for me to ramp it up. I ran one at 3.9, then one at 4.0 then another at 4.0 then one at 4.1 otherwise it would black screen and make me reset bios or whatever it is. or it would just shut down.hmscott likes this. -

Oh I can't live happily without it
Been running 100hz for such a long while, and I have had zero crashes with it. Can you run something like 70/75hz? even such a small bump is noticeable and nice for extra smoothness.
Also mason2smart try to post less times, and instead put more into each post. You are flooding the thread at times just to put a single small sentence haha

Naaah. I don't need to break the warranty THAT bad.
I don't really think there is a game that needs 2 GTX980m's overclocked that high anyway. Amd I dom't play anything besides Witcher 3 and sometimes Crysis 3 and they both run great on default clock and when slightly overclocked, they run absolutely fantastic with everything on max.
Btw, I didn't see any significant difference between running my monitor @100Hz from 60Hz. Certainly not worth to have to deal with potential problems.hmscott and mason2smart like this. -

just so u know, those apples are qd of 4 and all sequential read/write for compressible files
if u had chance to test them at qd of 1 it'll be max at around 2000 to 2500 MB/s for pair of 950 pro or sm951. can't wait for 960 pro though. sm961 is already pretty decent.
this is SM961 at single drive with server OS which optimizes storage performance in 4k, also with cstate off, power and various tweak etc.

@mason2smart when gpu is underload theres heat and due to fan is shared between cpu and two gpu, GPU gets cooling priority first while all the hot air just blown off from GPU heatsink is used to try to cool CPU heatsink.. msi LOL well it is a gaming laptop so they prioritize CPU. which is one of the reason i didnt get GT80 or 80S.
GT83 looks promising with additional fins dedicated for CPU hope it'll run 5-10c cooler.mason2smart and hmscott like this. -
Not by much though. And I had the CPU @4.1Ghz.

Sorry, too early in the morning here. What's qd of 1 qd of 4???
Btw, that result you posted isn't that much different from mine, but I didn't save it to prove it. I'll run it again later today.mason2smart and hmscott like this. -
just a simple example:
QD1 means queue depth of 1 for short, is what we run at most of the time in a consumer environment. take for example you play game, the game file loads sequentially most of the time, 1 file being read while the rest not being used as most common used stuff are loaded into ram instead, this mean it's QD1 of sequential read depending on block size.
now say u run the game in window mode while you're at it you run a different game at the same time and have level loading, then thats QD2 at sequential read.
samsung 950 pro at QD1 sequential read capable of around 2200MB/s ish, only at QD2 or higher then its capable of reaching 3000MB/s. means if you load a game, game 1 loads at max 2200MB/s and it'll never hit 3000MB/s, if you load 2 games at same time, both combined loading speed is 3000MB/s while game 1 might become say 1500MB/s for example. hope this explains a bit.
theres different block size for sequential read/write, random read/write. most window files and most application are 4k block size random read/write type which is why sequential boost won't give you much advantage unless you do very specific ones such as video/audio encoding, file copying, back up imaging, gaming especially level loading or using ramdisk that have auto save feature.Ryley, mason2smart and hmscott like this. -

The GPU was not under much load and my temps used to be much lower... Maybe I should just try cleaning out dust and stuff... After all, I do have a cat... -
mason2smart Notebook Virtuoso
Yes but the 961 will overheat and melt and was more of a prototype that Samsung chose to market. It my reach slightly faster speeds than the 950 pro but that's because the pro has thermal management and won't burn up. I chose to pay more for a slower drive so j could have dependable storage with s longer life expectancy
