First check your current temps using Hwmonitor. Don't go overclocking out of the box before knowing your temps. Overclocking will raise them.

You can overclock with MSI Afterburner but you might be locked to +135 core. And it is not guaranteed to be stable. For actual serious overclocking you would need unlocked vbios. It is a time consuming practice to balance the best overclocks and you will risk data loss when you suddenly make a bad move and your machine restarts/locks up :)

Personally, I would suggest you to not overclock unless absolutely necessary :) Or if you don't mind dealing with the consequences as well as patinently find the perfect balance of power, temps and clocks.

Intel Extreme Tuning Utility for CPU, MSI Afterburner for GPU
That being said... It's very easy to brick your computer if you don't know what you're doing and sometimes even if you do.
If you want to overclock, I recommend to research and educate yourself first.
Your questions suggest that you don't have a clue. Google, watch, read so if something's go awry, you have an idea what to do to revive your computer.
Overclocking IS NOT SAFE for noobs.
I recommend starting with this thread. There is a truckload of good info and great and very helpful advices concentrated in one place.
    Good luck.

The msi has its own over clocking software as well if u press func key and another key on the keyboard - about 3 modes were there - is there any over clocking options in the bios - as in the alienware - just asking ,

Also i wanted to know are 2 sli gtx 980m comparable to 2 gtx 1070

    Yes, 2 x 980m SLI is about 1/2 the performance of 2 x 1070 SLI :)

The 6820HK models have BIOS OC options.

The 6920HQ models can be CPU tuned with Intel XTU in Windows - no BIOS options for tuning.

I don't use the MSI Dragon Gaming Center - I uninstall it, but I see MSI DGC has tuning options for a few "sets" of settings, and some individual tuning options for CPU and fan curve tuning, but no detailed GPU core / vram tuning.

I use Intel XTU CPU tuning + MSI Afterburner for GPU tuning, and don't tune the fan curve - but you can use MSI's "Silent Option" for fan tuning.

If that's what you mean by "overclocking", go right ahead. You're safe. That thing just switches between predefined multipliers.

You mean 4Ghz over your current frequency? Sure it's quite simple to Go to Walmart and ask for 10 gallon jug of liquid hydrogen (helium might suffice). Put it into a plastic soapbox or two and use it as a laptop cooling pad.
Add hydrogen as needed because it evaporates relatively quickly

No srsly dude. You really need to learn at least something about computers in general.
READ THIS THREAD, it's all here. Is that too much to ask?

We usually use Intel XTU or ThrottleStop for CPU tuning, not many report using the BIOS.

    I did a quick search and couldn't find anyone giving GT80S / GT83 BIOS settings for OC'ing.

@iunlock has authored a few threads on 6820HK OC, here is an active one, maybe you can find some help there:

[i7-6820HK] Overclock Settings for 4.0GHz to 4.3GHz (Stable)
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...-settings-for-4-0ghz-to-4-3ghz-stable.787791/

You may be on your own for the GT80 BIOS tuning, so if you figure it out, please do post a how to for the next guy(s) :)

I'd like to discourage anyone who doesn't know what they're doing, to mess with BIOS OC willy nilly. If you push too hard in XTU, chances are that your computer will revert to defaults (or previous settings) on restart. If you push too hard in BIOS, chances are your computer won't even boot.

Hello, the black friday approaching, i would like to add a SSD to my GT80S. I already have 2 samsung 950 PRO on the left port (next to the blu ray player).

But as I get lost in all the models that exist, I would like to know which model (the fastest ?) I can put on the third port of my GT80S.

Most SATA SSDs are going to be comparable in speed. Any reputable brand such as Samsung, Sandisk, etc will do. If you're worried about longevity, get an MLC model like the 850 Pro.

SATA III is pretty much saturated that's why NVMe is the future.

There's still plenty of room for improvement in terms of 4K QD1 performance which is what matters, although nobody's going to make anything like an XPoint SATA controller.

Doubt it, probably not worth it to invest R&D resources into an aging technology.

So on these 4 models, only the 850 Evo - SATA III would go on the 3rd port of the GT80S?

Pull the left M.2 SSD, then unscrew the one screw holding the drive in place from under where the SSD was.

I'm afraid I've screwed up something and I have absolutely no idea what.
So I did repaste on all gpus and cpu because 97C while running only 39 multiplier was too hot.
After repaste the temps dropped 20C on cpu. 81C was max running wPrime (long) for about 3 minutes.
Then I upped the multis to 42x (includiing cache) and restarted. Things went awry from there.
After some hiccups and bios reset and video driver reinstall (wouldn't run SLI) the laptop runs just fine and mainly COLD (see pic)
But the fans are running at full blast no matter what. They will start about 30 secs after logging into the windows for no reason I can see and will run full blast blowing out lukewarm air. Any ideas anyone?

You probably already tried this, but if not, cycle the Full Fan switch.

30 secs after logging in is about how long it takes all the startups to run and SCM is one of those and controls / reads the switches. It might not be lit up, but still active.

You could also try uninstalling SCM, reboot, and install the latest version from MSI.

Yes. Tried the Full Fan switch. No reaction. Also tried Silent Option. No reaction. I don't think the SCM is the guilty part here 'coz the fans started blowing when I was in BIOS. (found that after my post).
Tried to flash EC just in case. No dice.
Dissasembled, reseated everything I might've touched, no change. It was still blowing like an Apache helicopter.
    But guess what.
Took it off of the power source to carry it from one room to another. The thing went to sleep (no reason really, took me about 10 seconds) and after I woke it up... no helicopters.
So I plugged it back to the brick and so far so good. I'm just worried that it'll come back after restart.
    I still have no idea.

Something probably got stuck or "corrupted" after the initial situation in the EC, maybe setting the fan to 100% at low temps or something. I have a weird situation with my lenovo from work. It will get stuck to 800mhz on CPU when plugged in. After removing AC power and re plugging in, it fixes itself. It happens once every couple of months though.

A few weeks ago I purchased an MSI GT80 Titan SLI-094, with the following specs -

    Intel Core i7 (4th Gen) 4720HQ/2.6 GHz, 16GB 1600 MHz DDR3L SDRAM, 2X 128 GB SSD's in MSI Super RAID, 1 TB 7200rpm HDD, 2X NVIDIA GeForce GTX 965M with 4GB GDDR5 SDRAM (SLI)

I pretty much only use it for 3D modeling (and only when I'm out for coffee), using Google (Trimble) Sketchup. Some of my models are pretty large, and I figured this beast could handle them easily. Well, it's not working out that way. On some of my largest models when I try to move around the model it gets sluggish, and ends up giving me this error.....

"The NVIDIA OpenGL driver lost connection with the display driver due to exceeding the Windows Time-Out limit and is unable to continue. The application must close. Error Code 7"

My main desktop has only a single NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760 and doesn't have this problem. Sure, when I change views of a larger model it does take a few seconds for the shadows to catch up, but never an OpenGL error, no crashes.

It may be just fine for gaming, but I don't do any gaming, just 3D modeling. Is maybe the time-out limit greater on my desktop? Can I somehow increase the Windows Time-out limit on my GT80? Am I gonna have to sell this new play-purty?

Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

The 2 x 965m choice wasn't a good one, as a single GPU it's a small low end GPU and really not designed for modeling software, and I doubt your modeling software supports SLI, so it's not using both GPU's.

I'd return it asap before your return period expires, and get something you can use with your modeling software.

The current Pascal GPU's might work, but I would do some research on your application supporting Pascal.

A GT73VR single 1070 or 1080 would be cheaper and a better fit to your needs if your modeling software supports Pascal.

Or look for a laptop with an Nvidia Quadro GPU - there are lots out there, and if you don't do gaming you don't care about the gaming aspects so focus on modeling support.

    Good luck :)

I concur. Although... (a little spin off) Quadro, according to some, like this dude: is as good for gaming but prohibitively expensive.

P.S. I just noticed he says 2x 965m. Besides, as you said, SLI most likely doesn't work in this case, 965m is way too low end nowadays. Almost any ~$1.5k laptop from Best Buy has 970m in it.

I use this one for my GT80
    https://www.amazon.com/Club3D-Mini-...words=club3d+mini+displayport+1.2+to+hdmi+2.0

It works for 4K@60hz with chroma 4:4:4 or RGB Full.

New to this forum. Any help is greatly appreciated. I have upgraded GT80 2QE with 32GB ram and expanded hard (SSD) memory. Few days ago, I could not open desktop icon apps and Windows 10 system would not start up or close down. So, I decided to reset system back to default system. I realize that this means Windows 8.1 that originally came with computer. In resetting process the reset portion is freezing at 27%. Any advice or help on what is going on. Thanks.

Did you create any external version of recovery software? It is possible that something went wrong with either software or hardware or both (hardware-caused software failure) but more troubleshooting will be needed such as swapping back to the factory components.

You can use the generic Broadwell GT80 support area. I start with the product page:

    https://www.msi.com/Laptop/GT80-2QD-Titan-SLI.html#hero-specification

Then click the "Service" page tab, which pops up the Gen 4 or Gen 5 option dialog:
    https://www.msi.com/Laptop/support/GT80-2QD-Titan-SLI.html

Selecting the Driver tab you get the option through a popup to get Win 7/8.1/10 drivers:
    https://www.msi.com/Laptop/support/GT80-2QD-Titan-SLI-5.html#down-driver

Selecting Firmware tab you get the options for EC / vBIOS:
    https://www.msi.com/Laptop/support/GT80-2QD-Titan-SLI-5.html#down-firmware

You can file a ticket with MSI support to tell them the GT80 SLI-258 isn't searchable on their web site, and that you had to use an external google search to find your support page. This has happened in the past for not just MSI but other vendors.
