Just wondering if I should swap out the WSAD keycaps (I have the red ones in my box). I like the idea, but I've head that they feel different when typing, and not in a good way. Any truth to that?

I have not tried out the red ones, ours comes with the gold key caps. They feel great while gaming, you do notice a difference when you are typing, they are heavier than the regular keys. I am use to them and are comfortable with the feel when typing, but there is an adjustment period. I would recommend putting them on for a week see if you can get use to them.

Cheers. Easy enough to remove the original ones with the tool I presume - no risk of busting anything?

No risk of breaking it, I just wouldn't recommend changing the key caps all the time, it might be come loose and your keys might start wiggling.

Quokka, the tool takes the keys off easy, putting on use careful alignment, full follow through press, snapped on :)

I like the weight of the gold keys, but be warned, they are solid and the keyboard red backlight doesn't shine through.

I left the gold keys on after trying them for a while.

Got them on easily enough, and they are definitely fully seated. Although is it normal that they are slightly higher than the other keys?

I think that's on purpose so they can be felt for.

    Hey guys,

I am new here, and I will be purchasing a MSI GT80 Titan SLI-263 next week, buuuuuut... which reseller do you think I should go with? I'm considering xoticpc.com because of the customization features they offer and a 1 year dead-pixel warranty, but they couldn't even tell me if they have any in stock! (How can you not know what inventory you have on hand?! o_O) And unfortunately, with customization it will take longer to get the laptop than say ordering one from Amazon and doing certain things myself like upping it to 32GB of RAM, applying better thermal compound to the GPU/CPU, adding more M.2 drives, etc. Other wise they seem like a great company though.

So anyways, can anyone recommend a reseller that provides excellent support with no hassles, warranty options (I'm not paying THAT kind of money and not having coverage incase something happens) and is fast to ship it?

    Thanks in advance!

I have traveled with mine, under the seat and in the overhead both. It's funny because I have had a corsair water-cooled build in my wishlist for quite sometime with the same cpu and gpu and 144hz 21:9 monitor. Just don't see it being portable so never pulled the trigger.

Don't worry about temps in all honesty if there is an issue it can be corrected, but run some tests if u can when u check it out.

Hey Andy, I checked your website and I don't see the GT80 Titan SLI-263... The highest model shown looks to have the Intel® Core i7-4720HQ processor instead of the Intel® Core i7-5950HQ, and I don't see an option for the 5950HQ when I try to configure it. Am I missing something???

Basically I'm looking for the base model of the SLI-263 with 32GB of RAM, 4x M.2 128GB drives in RAID 0.

    Thanks!

The Nightblade is my second choise if the deal for the gt80 dont works,
The apps for monitoring, i will use cpu-z and cpuid hwmonitor for the temps,
The OCCT is it good to stress the cpu and gpu, or i have to use another one?

    Hi All,

I'm planning to buy a GT80 Titan SLI-263 -aka- 2QE Titan SLI. I have questions on a few different topics (all GT80 related)--hope that's OK all in one post. I'm new to notebooks, so please forgive any ignorant questions.

    1) Can the GT80 run from AC power but without a battery installed/dead battery? Is there any performance degradation or other issues? I suppose I'm planning for a future where the battery has died and there's no replacement available because MSI no longer supports the GT80 ("buy our new model, the GT97").

    2) I've seen a few posts regarding SSD failures with the stock Kingston SSDs included with the GT80. Any recommendations for what brand/model SSD to have these switched to?

    3) Are "no dead pixel warranties" worthwhile? I've seen a couple of people have dead pixel issues here.

    4) Any recommendations for burn-in software (preferably freeware) to stress test the system? I'm not a gamer, so I'm sure I won't be using the system to its maximum capabilities, but I'd like to test out the components.

    5) Any experience with buying from Prostar?

    Thanks

As far as I know, they mean the speed. M.2 PCIe runs at PCIe x4 lanes. It does not mean it has 4 physical ports all running at 4X.

I'm in the same boat as you are in... I'm thinking about going with Xoticpc myself just because I can get a better warranty, and a 1 year no dead pixel warranty and they can do stress testing on the laptop before they ship it out to you. I've only seen 2 downsides with them so far: I contacted their sales department and they couldn't even tell me if they had any in stock (wtf?!), and it will take longer to get the laptop as you're not just ordering a stock one from say Amazon or Newegg, etc. Let me know if you find any luck with a good reseller as I would like to know too!

    Ben, here are some answers:
    1) the battery in the GT80 cannot be removed by any normal means I have found. It is a trend started by crApple and is quite annoying.

    2) I did not have any problem with the SSDs (2) that came with my 263. I ordered four Samsung EVO 850 500GB m.2s from newegg and have the originals in a storage bag. I also replaced the HD with a 2tb laptop drive and saved the original.

    3) I do not know about the dead pixel issue, my GT 80 has all it's pixels operating.

    4) I for the most part do not over clock my gear, I am just too lazy. If you make backups using the a drive imaging software, then if it fails under stress, RMA it and when the new one gets in, re-image it from backups. So no real need to stress test before hand. If you want to test I would suggest using 3Dmark and PCmark. http://www.futuremark.com/benchmarks.

    5) I have not done business with Prostar.

What I did do was order a stock GT 80 263 with 12GBs of memory, two m.2 SSDs (256GB) and 1TB drive. Then I ordered two 8 GB sodimms (I like having a spare on hang for troubleshooting), four 500GB EVO 850 m.2s, and a 2TB laptop drive. That got expensive quick, let me tell you.

After removal of two screws in the bottom the top where the power button is slides to the right revealing the SSD, HD and Sodimm slots. all are quite easy to access. Since I do not OC the GT 80, I did not change out the thermal paste.

It is just how comfortable you are changing the components.

    Hope this helps,

    P.

The chipset supports 20x Gen 3 PCI-E lanes. The connection to the CPU is 4x Gen 3. This means you can have a maximum speed of 4x Gen 3 combined from all devices.

It will be interesting to see the battery life on this thing as well as ports.

4X is the speed, no the number of connectors for drives. PCIe drives use 4x lanes of the bus to ensure high bandwidth. You will have 16x used by the graphics card and 4x from the rest of the pcie devices. 1 lane of PCIe runs at 8Gbps compared to SATA III 6Gbps. So even 1x PCIe is already faster.

I wonder what MSI will do to compete with Asus... I wonder if they expected something like the GX700? Maybe they will use a new type of MXM or Nvlink in the next GT80?

What do you mean? In the end both have been very competitive. If anything, Asus got a bit lazy several years ago, when MSI slowly arose to be a big player haha. At any rate, any new change needs to be a worthwhile upgrade, rather than a compromise. As it points out, fresh adoption of the latest techs with their current limits and availability, will result in more like a sidegrade, instead of an upgrade.

GT80 needs to be something different, not just run of the mill higher end version laptop. MSI already has high end products with premium quality like the GT72. Skylake for mobile has so far proved to be an incremental update at best, that brings very little to the current high end offerings. Their HK processors are still a mystery and I am a bit skeptical about the whole unlocked thing for overclocking. DDR4 for laptops is not really that much faster than current high end DDR3. There are no new GPUs yet. PCIe storage is nice, but I think we need a better CPU/chipset with more lanes to properly take advantage of it.

Yes, and a screen upgrade. I would love to see a 3d 4k screen. They can put the 3d vision emitter right where the haptic feedback adapter used to be. I was commenting on the Mxm because maybe there will be a new adapter for higher power consumption cards.

The new Asus has a completely aluminum body- in my opinion that would be nice addition for the GT80 to have as well.

I wonder what happened with 3D. I loved it a couple of years ago but to be honest, it seems like people couldn't agree on how or what to do... it is just such a hassle. I have a 3D monitor and TV and getting it to properly work with my laptop and previous laptops has been a hassle that requires additional software besides hardware like the emitter. I think they can easily mount the emitter on the screen frame without issues.

a 4K screen would be nice as long as they iron out scaling, so we can enjoy it. Full body aluminum I'd rather not have haha, but that's just me. I don't mind a strong frame made of metal but that's it. Actually, for being mostly plastic and aluminum, the GT80 is quite sturdy. But yeah a new body could work out too.

As for MXM, maybe in another generation we will see a change here. I think MXM will have one last round with GPUs before they start phasing it out slowly.

I am more excited about VR than anything. I want to see how that develops.

    Here is the chipset layout:

Note the three things I have highlighted, the CHIPSET has 20x PCI-E 3.0 lanes, the CPU has 16, the chipset and CPU are linked by DMI 3.0 (4x Gen 3 bandwidth).

You can connect a 16x GPU to the CPU and technically 5 lots of PCI-E 3.0 4x SSDs.

BUT that link between the CPU and chipset will bottleneck all I/O going into the chipset to a maximum transfer rate of 3.5GB/sec (twice the current) so that caps your maximum throughput.

I like specs as much as the next guy on my machines. When I buy, I go for the latest and greatest like everyone else here. With that in mind, let's all get real shall we?

There isn't a game, or much of anything else for that matter, out there at this point and time that can even come close to using what hardware that is 3 years old. Take the older 7 series in SLI. Do you honestly know of a game that will not run in ultra settings right now or in the future? No. Do you know of an I7 processor for that matter that will not run those games in ultra settings? No.

4k screens? For what? Do we have anything that we can actually view outside of movies in 4k? Certainly not any games that I am aware of. They would be fantastic, but not happening because of the current trend to be able to port most PC games to consoles. Or vice-versa, console to PC.

There comes a time of diminishing returns and we are in it. The hardware has FAR outpaced the software (engines) that are currently developed. That didn't used to be the case, but it certainly is now.

    Nicely Put! ;)
However things can be run at 1080 on a 4k screen. The screens just look nicer and are much more detailed. Its better when watching movies or looking at photos. My brother has one on his blade 2014 - its really nice.

At best you can carry the installer with you. I think.

Indeed, the reality is that with the current power that we have, it will take some time before we become anything below high end, for the games that are coming out. It is also true that technology needs specific breakthroughs to have a huge performance increase.

With current consoles being the new "limit" I think we are safe for a long while. Specially if DX12 catches up, or any of those API that reduce CPU issues. We do get games for the lowest common denominator, and then extra eye candy for the PC folk. If the lowest common denominator is the level of current consoles, then we are not in desperate need for higher end parts.

But we like to brag huh? :D

Yes, well sort of. You have to install it to get the files extracted, then you can transfer the files wherever you'd like and run the exe. Saves you the ACTUAL install. However if your looking for a single portable exe you can run FROM/ON a usb stick itself - thats a negative afaik. I dont like having benchmarks installed on my pc. Looks like clutter in my eyes. Espeically when most of them are portable and dont require windowsinstaller. Its the method I use. I drag and drop the files from the install into a benchmarks folder and keep it there.

I'm sorry but I have to disagree with two of your points. Any 7 series in sli would not be able to max out some of the latest games those of which include the witcher 3, shadow of mordor, and batman arkham knight (post patch).

As for your point about 4k, what are you talking about? I haven't seen a resolution restricted game on the PC in years, the last one I recall was dark souls 1. Almost all the latest games can go up to 4k and higher on the PC.

Yes and the ports and ssd's make skylake more than worth the wait. As well as eye new scaling stuff.

mason2smart, SLI 980m is faster than single desktop 980, 990m(?), sometimes 980ti and Titan X - depends on OC and system.

Yes but it's deficient processor wise. I heard there's a huge difference between the MX and HQ.

I haven't heard any talk about Clevo lately. How does the 80 compare at the Clevo 17"? I beleve they also have an sli?

mason2smart, the 5950HQ processor is fast enough to keep up with the games, benchmarks, the work I do, and I don't feel it is under powered or limits the performance of the 980m SLI.

The max TDP of 47w matches the cooling in the GT80. If the TDP were variable to allow more power delivery, we wouldn't be able to make much use of it. The CPU would thermally throttle not much past the current 47w limit on sustained 100% load.

I don't need full on desktop/server performance in a notebook. In fact it would be an added weight, power and heat burden that I would optimize out of a gaming laptop if I were designing one, it's unnecessary, at least for me, and probably for most people.

The 5950HQ, 4980HQ, etc all pump out so much heat, to add more power/heat burden would only make the fans run faster and more often, not something I like. My laptop shouldn't need to be relegated to the datacenter due to fan/exhaust noise ;)

The benefit of desktop processors is that they have higher TDP limits, with adequate cooling - in a desktop huge air cooled heatsinks or water cooling - in laptops you don't have enough room for huge heatsinks so you get slightly larger heatsinks with faster noisier fans.

My 5950HQ at full 47w TDP, can sustain 3.55ghz (bouncing between 35x-36x) for hours at a time. The desktop 6700k can run at a higher TDP of up to 91w or whatever the available power and cooling allows. Effectively doubling the TDP from 47w to 91w is going to require a heck of a lot of cooling to run at full performance. Louder, noisier fan action.

A 91w TDP CPU can sustain higher clock rates indefinitely - past the point where the HQ lower TDP limit would cause power throttling. Instead you would likely thermally throttle before you could use the full 91w in a laptop. Especially if you also have an SLI of 990m's. You would also likely need 2 x 330w power bricks to attain full performance on the desktop CPU + 2 x 990m's at full load. Hopefully the GT80 with 2x 990m's won't need another 330w brick :)

The 6700HQ Geekbench best score (not many scores reported) is 12859 multi.

The Clevo 750DM is the one to look at when it comes out, it will have the 6700k desktop processor. Geekbench shows 6700k scores from 8000 to 27000 - most in the 15000 mid-range, so depending on power, cooling, etc the 6700k could be the same, or awesome, and noisy at the power range beyond the 5950HQ/4890HQ performance.

The only problem I have with Clevo's is the noise - they don't have good fan tables - they only hit full fan automatically right at or just over thermal throttling point, which means if you leave it on auto stuff can get and stay really hot to the point of thermal throttling - that bothers some people and they turn on 100% fan all the time to keep from thermal throttling - which is really noisy. This is the deal breaker for me :(

I was worried about fan noise with the GT80 SLI-263 before I got it, but as it turns out it is as quiet or quieter than my G750JH, which was really quiet. And, temps stay low all the time.

The GT80 fan ramps up intelligently, not too much, not too little, and unless I know I am doing a long 100% CPU session - or benchmarking - I won't need/use the 100% fan switch 99% of the time. When benchmarking I always turn on the 100% fan, it does give the scores a little bump up.

The other complaints about Clevo's are the same with any laptop, build quality, flimsy keyboards, bad speakers, service, etc.

MSI and Asus are the brands I bounce between, for laptop, motherboard, graphics cards, etc. I have had good service and reliable stuff from them for a long time.

The fastest most expensive laptop isn't always the most reliable or easy to live with laptop, something to consider long term. Many Alienware and Clevo owners can attest to this. :)

There were other Clevo's, SLI and other form factors, but many/most have been temporarily discontinued or out of stock, while the new Skylake versions are announced and released into the channel.

Update: Found the SLI version, P870DM, pdf of specs:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/attachments/p870dm-b_v2-0-without-pdf.127268/

That datasheet says TDP of 95w, while the Intel Ark Specifications page says 91w:

Also note the GPU options, the 4th option is "Nvidia new generation graphic card", likely the 990m, you will want to wait for the release of the 990m SLI :)

What do you mean? I run Witcher 3 maxed with fps cap at 60 (I don't use vsync, just the cap) and I run fine at 60fps. Sure I get drops from time to time by performance is stellar. I haven't tried shadow of mordor but I doubt I would have any problems with it. Batman is not a good case because its not finished yet with the patches. They still have not properly enabled SLI among other things.

Tried games like Evolved, Killing floor 2, Metal Gear 5, all maxed out without issues.

As for 4K. the only thing I can assure is that 980m SLI is not capable enough for current games at 4K at fast enough fps. witcher 3 runs at 30fps or lower, Metal Gear runs around in the 40s, etc. We simply don't have the memory bandwidth even if we do have capable graphics processors. But for plain old 1080 res, we have more than enough graphics power to max games.

I wasn't talking about our 980ms but rather a 7 series nvidia gpu since that's what he mentioned. I also forgot to mention at resolutions higher then 1080p. Basically my entire post had nothing to do with the GT80 I know how it runs games I own one lol.

With a 7 series gpu and the games I mentioned vram was a huge bottle neck in those games and caused performance issues, I would know since before my titans I had three 780tis in tri sli.

there is a huge difference in sustained performance between a properly configured MX and ANY other CPU be it MQ or HQ. Unless you do know what you are doing and tweak your MX processor, it won't do anything for you. The only real difference is the fact that you can ignore the TDP limit with an MX processor, which is why you can get better sustained performance (along with much higher temps if you are not careful!). If we had TDP control on HQ processors, there would be little to no performance difference between an MX and an 4980/5950HQ processors.

All that extra performance would help you push additional frames, provided your graphics cards are up to snuff. they would be very helpful for 144hz monitors. But for current gaming at 60fps it wouldn't do much.

Oh right I see what you mean. Well, to be honest, it doesn't help that in witcher 3, kepler had very low performance compared to maxwell. I don't know if nvidia ever got around fixing that. The memory issue though, it is real. 3GB is just not enough for the demands of the games that are coming out, specially at higher resolutions. They can still run the games pretty well, but some sacrifices have to be made due to the vram oversight.
