mason2smart, I would start out not adding or changing anything from MSI stock parts, and let the GT80 run for a week or two.

Let any early component failures occur first before adding variables that could cloud debugging later.

I know it is natural to want to tweak it all out right away, but some laptops do come with problems, some that you won't notice the first time you, or they, power it up.

I generally run a burn in for a few days first, but I have done this before and know what I am looking for, and can find the failures quickly.

But, even I miss things when I rush through, so I make an effort to enjoy the laptop for a couple of weeks before making any major changes.

That slows me down and lets me observe how the laptop reacts to load over a couple of weeks.

Something to consider is if you get a bunch of mods to a laptop you configure from a boutique shop, you may not be able to get MSI service directly again, and you will need to only go through the boutique that configured it for you.

As far as changing the thermal compound before you even test it, that would be like seasoning food before tasting it :)

If you are going to go through the trouble to re-paste, I would first get a baseline measurement of CPU/GPU temps under idle / load at 70F (or close to it), so you know for a fact whether the re-pasting actually helps, or makes it worse.

Even if you do get a few degree's of improvement from re-pasting, it really isn't worth the long term commitment for re-pasting, at least for me.

Those few degree's are likely never going to translate into a make or break benefit or improvement - you aren't going to be able to notice the performance improvement of dropping a few degree's.

So, no I wouldn't suggest having them crack open your laptop, rip out all the cooling, and replace the already perfectly good thermal paste :)

    Hey everyone! Few questions.
If you order from a reseller like Xotic/Gentech, do you get the backpack with the GT80?
Do you have a preferred reseller? If so, why?
If you order a model with fewer than 4 M.2 SSDs, is it missing components to install them or does it have all the mounting/interface parts included?
When does Intel officially release Skylake-H and are there any embargoes that are about to be lifted?

    Thanks!

Sorry to jump in here, but what software do you use to run your burn-in? I would like to do the same to my GT80 when I get it.

    Thanks

Ben_, start with the benchmark programs, make sure you make it through them fully without flaky video, or thermal throttling - watch / log temps with hwinfo64.

Benchmarks like the futuremark.com series, Unigine Heaven / Valley, furmark - many don't like this, but I have used it for a long time so I am used to interpreting / comparing results.

For burn-in, I would start with 15 minutes of furmark + prime95 - simultaneous running. I wouldn't do this with a thin laptop, only the GT80, GT72, etc.

For longer term, I use either BIONC CPU/GPU tasks - easiest to set up and run with an account through BAM (BOINC account manager), it lets me install / configure in a few minutes with all my subscribed projects in play.

Stanford's Fah takes a few minutes longer to set up the Secure Key, and enable the CPU / GPU's - takes a couple of restarts, but this one is the one I fire up weekly to watch for temperature changes.

Note that over time you might get different job mixes for both Fah and BIONC. Always note the task running when recording temps.

    As a reference, I am running Fah, at 78F ambient, CPU at 100% 83-86c (core variance), GPU's at 100% 57c and 65c, Toshiba M.2's 52c, and Samsung 840 38c.

    Hi all
I was installing windows 7 on my GT-80, installed and everything ok with the drivers and all. however, once I shut it down it won't turn on, no led, no fans, its just dead !

    Any suggestion?

Some suggest clearing the CMOS, can be that done without voiding the warranty ( sticker in the back ) ?

You won't void the warranty unless you damage something physically during the process.

Well then, I've placed my order now.

Might arrive next week on the 26th or 27th, only for a price of a used car ;) lol

Thanks for all the help, you've literally helped me decide between this and the Dellienware.

Only worry now is hopefully the small presence of msi in my country doesn't come back to bite me should i need support.

mason2smart, you can do it :)

It's easy. Get a 32GB USB 3.0 flash drive, use MSI BurnRecovery to create a recovery boot drive.

Take out the 2 M.2 SSD's, one screw each (don't lose the screw, or drop it in the computer), put them aside, and put in your M.2 drives - the empty slots have screws already in them - take them out before plugging in the new M.2 drives.

Power up into the BIOS, go to the Advanced Tab, and create the RAID0 - add all the M.2 drives you installed, create the volume - press the button - it's not hard.

Then, plug in the 32GB USB 3.0 boot recovery flash drive and boot on it, restore the recovery OS on to the the RAID0, the rest is easy :)

Do I have to remove the seal to swap ssd? Also I would need screws for the ssd?

mason2smart, there is 1 screw that you need to pull, both to remove the top access panel as well as the bottom panel, that screw hole has a sticker on it - push your Phillips head screw driver through it, and unscrew it - then 1 more to remove - labeled with an icon near the corner. Then the top access panel slides off.

You only void the warranty if you mess up physically. Don't drop anything into the computer, don't spill a drink into it, don't forget to unplug the computer from the wall and power it off before unplugging SSD's. :)

mason2smart, IDK, check the dimensions of both models and see if it will measure out - I think the AW18 is thicker - but not sure if the MSI is wider.

I think we already discussed all this :)

You don't want to carry 2 backpacks, but really the MSI GT80 backpack is perfect for carry / protection, and books will fit in many kinds of satchels / bags for the hand carry.

mason2smart, call newegg and ask :)

newegg will charge a 15% restocking fee unless there is something wrong with the laptop, and may require RMA to the vendor for the fix - but also will swap for a new one.

You really need to call and talk nicely to both newegg and Amazon for the current info, it changes from time to time.

If you use Amazon Prime, you will be able to return without trouble, and I believe it is 60-90 days return, again call and ask a Prime support person - it's worth the $99 for Prime if you don't have it, and Amazon did/does have a Student rate.

That would be unethical and unnecessary, the VOID WARRANTY sticker is there if you mess up, if you are adding/upgrading your drives / memory that is ok.

If you are hacking in water cooling, MSI doesn't want to see it :)

If you do send in for RMA, or when you send it in to upgrade your GPU's, it is recommended you pull your memory and drives, and put in the original parts. That way you don't lose your data or memory.

It's a risk vs benefit equation on this one, sticking with IC diamond offers almost all the performance with none of the risk.

The GT80 is going to offer 2 x 980 "Desktop" SLI, according to this article:

Nvidia's Crazy Fast Desktop GPU Coming to Laptops
    http://www.laptopmag.com/articles/nvidia-desktop-gpus-gaming-laptops

"The laptops scheduled to receive this ambitious upgrade include the Aorus X7 DT, Clevo P870DM, Clevo P775DM, ASUS GX700v0 and the MSI GT72 Dominator. MSI's monstrous GT80 Titan SLI is also getting the chips, which means you get a pair of desktop GPUs in SLI configuration, in a laptop. Just let that sink in."

Desktop NVIDIA GTX 980 Coming To Gaming Notebooks
    http://www.anandtech.com/show/9649/nvidia-gtx-980-in-notebooks

"MSI should be first out of the gate with a new model of both the GT72 and the GT80 which will offer GTX 980 in SLI"

Nvidia announces GeForce GTX 980 for notebooks
    http://www.notebookcheck.net/Nvidia-announces-GeForce-GTX-980-for-notebooks.150756.0.html

"Despite the inevitable high price tag, Nvidia has mentioned a number of OEM partners and designs, including the Gigabyte/Aorus (X7 DT), the Asus (GX700VO), the MSI (GT72, GT80) and the Clevo (P870DM). All models will support G-Sync and no Optimus except for the MSI GT80. In return, this massive MSI model will be the only notebook capable of supporting GTX 980 in SLI. The first notebooks with the GTX 980 GPU will come by the end of this month."

Maybe this is why the GT80 hasn't been announced just yet with skylake, I can only hope so, thanks hmscott for the post of info.

    GTVEVO, it's pretty exciting :)

I wonder if MSI will offer the 980 SLI as an upgrade for us 980m SLI owners? It would be about a 30% performance improvement.

With Pascal 9-12 months away it might be worth while if it isn't too expensive.

What wattage power supply is going to drive that 980 SLI GT80? A 2 x 330w would be cumbersome. Maybe MSI will bring out a 500w power supply?

My other concern is, what is the cost of the GT80 with 980 SLI going to be?

$3699 for the 980m would be $4800 if MSI scales the price 30% to match the performance improvement. Add another $200 for the 500w power supply, and we are at $5000.

You are exactly right, I really feel a new power supply (higher phase) will be developed as they stated especially if an SLI version is released, this could happen now or down the road but it was mentioned in the video. With this being new tech I do expect the price to make a jump so this scares me along with the question of "Will they release an SLI version due to power and heat requirements?" without getting outside everyone's price point target. Just lots of questions in my mind now on top of the 6820hk.

It can be with a single 980 and the new proc, and they will keep every things as it is now

ZoOLf, MSI might do a single GPU 980 model GT80, they did do a single 980m model, but the press coverage mentions from a couple of sources that MSI will offer an SLI 980 through the GT80.

One quick search and "SLI" right beside it, with the addition of an HK CPU it will be like holiday.

Technically that will be not so easy, due to the hight temp, but lets hope :),
I just wonder how the GT80 will manage to effectively cool 2 980 in sli.
    Wait and see

ZoOLf, the cooling is going to be ok, at 100% load the 980m SLI OC'd in my GT80 SLI-263 is 57c/67c - even +20c would be still be good.

so the new 980 is gonna be great, i'm curious about the current gen (haswell actually) and Oculus compatability. the current 980m sli config easily generates the minimum 3dmark scores necessary for vr gaming. but will Oculus keep laptop owners with the 9xxm cards from being able to use the final retail units with these laptops? its one of the main reasons i did not return my titan.
