mason2smart, it's common sense, if there isn't enough power, something won't work, or won't work + charge it's off-power battery.

These answers and my previous answer apply to the new GT80 980 SLI, and all laptops in general

The specifics of which wattage mix of power supplies will be available, or how much of each it will use under what use, won't be known until the GT80 980 SLI is announced, and ships so we can try it out.

If a power supply can't supply the power for both charging and use, the battery will remain at it's same charge, most laptops won't use the battery for supplemental power, but some will.

We don't know yet if the GT80 980SLI will use the battery while plugged in for a power boost.

Likely then it isn't enough power to feed the laptop for full performance either. And, if you push it it will fail.

We don't know what is going to come with the GT80 980 SLI, we need to wait to find out before answering completely.

yea exactly, won't know how the new asus gx700 and acer predator would work with a PSU less than 300w, fact is, it probably won't as soon as we overclock. GPU default to 150w+ even with a bit of OC can go to 200w, rest goes to CPU + among other things so i won't get too excited until we see everything and know everything.

@hmscott btw i know 18" laptop max at 60hz cause no manufacturer make it more than 60ghz, only the 17" has 144hz. whats the response time on msi gt80 display?

    It has arrived!

Ok, first of all, msi japan sucks, it didn't even come with the backpack. Someone forgot to include the golden keys. The keyboard layout needs getting used too, especially when typing in japanese.

Can anyone recommend a backpack for it? I'm looking at those Alienware/Mobile edge backpacks, either the Orion or Vindicator.

Also annoyed that I'll be in a place without wifi for a week :(

unityole, the default refresh is 60hz, but like many panels, it OC's to 100hz stable.

It is a Samsung 18" SDC4C48 as listed by info apps, the same 18" display as used by the AW18, but the only reference with display details I can find, says it's in a 15.6" laptop, which doesn't give much confidence in the rest of the info.

    http://www.notebookcheck.com/Notebookcheck-Notebook-Display-Charts.119792.0.html

That chart doesn't have response time, and I can't find any specifications listed for that screen. I also tried calling it an Alienware 18", and still no details.

The hwinfo64 app says it's unknown, and doesn't list a lot of info. We could try speccy, aida64, etc, to see if one has info. Here is what hwinfo shows:

Samsung 18 display in GT80 through hwinfo app.JPG

You could try asking at the Samsung Display site... but it's not likely to give an answer.

You could also try asking in the Alienware 18" laptop support forums here.

When you find out, please post the specs or a link to them here :)

mason2smart, Asus didn't think so when I asked them, they said as long as it is stable it's ok - it doesn't void warranty.

As far as lifespan, who really knows? If a display dies, why did it fail? Was it the OC, or just normal lifespan?

It's up to you to decide :)

mason2smart, Asus is the only vendor response I have.

When you get your GT80, email MSI, and ask them if it is ok to OC your LCD to a higher stable refresh rate. Then you will have confirmation.

Its a PLS display which is a newer (or reinvented by a different company) tech than IPS. The are very similar just PLS is suppose to be slightly improved over IPS.

Everki Titan bags were mentioned earlier as being suitable. I probably spelled it wrong, but should get you close. Alienware bags scream "steal me" to passersby.

ZoOLf, when you quote a specification, please quote the source. Is that a generic average for PLS, or specific to the Samsung 18" SDC4C48 panel in question?

lmao exactly, cause 16ms is pretty damn high which is around 60hz, even if we can overclock display it prob won't do much. and here i thought 14ms is high was gonna get a 3.5ms monitor.. but i guess if 16ms is ok then 14ms is no problem :D

How many fps should i be getting in Witcher 3 with everything on Ultra w/o hairworks? I'm currently getting around 47 on average.

Should i update to Witcher 3 Game ready driver? Im still on 344.something, whatever the machine came with.

Also how do I keep my battery healthy? I usually unplug when I'm only surfing the net. At what % should i charge?

I will. But by the time I get one you might have already bought one, I don't live in the us. Amazon jp says that it'll take 1-2 months for an Alienware Orion 18 to arrive :(

Im currently looking for other options.

ZoOLf, it looks like Matrix Leader thinks so :)
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/i-have-an-ips-screen.761208/

"I never knew the difference until I was logged in to a friend's computer via TeamViewer and told him that I have an IPS display, ( Samsung LTM184HL01 18.4" WLED FHD (1920 X 1080) TrueLife Display IPS 16:9 1080p [SDC4C48] ) he said he was jealous

So I did some research and although IPS displays display colors more accurately and is better for professional work like photoshop and such, I read that IPS displays offer high response times as opposed to TN Displays, which will produce ghosting when viewing a fast moving object.

I am confused, then, why was the guy jealous? what's so great about IPS displays if they have high response rates? this doesn't sound ideal for a gaming laptop right?"

The LTM184HL01 is the only 18" panel in production according to Panelook, but it shows up as SDC4C48, why?
    http://www.panelook.com/LTM184HL01_SAMSUNG_18.4_LCM_overview_21285.html

From Matrix Leaders thread, here is a "blur test" to check for frame skipping at elevated refresh, the GT80 passes at 100hz on IE, Chrome:

You should see a lot higher FPS that 47 with hair works turned off. I average 60FPS with no hair works on...

SizeDrip, kinda OT, better to post elsewhere for game questions, either here in the forums:

    Gaming (Software and Graphics Cards)
Talk about games and mobile graphics cards here.
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/forums/gaming-software-and-graphics-cards.26/

Or, even better, file a bug / complaint with Rockstar Games, here is a similar complaint:

GTA V PC Crash to Desktop or will log me out when loading story mode
    https://support.rockstargames.com/h...op-or-will-log-me-out-when-loading-story-mode

Or, "google is your friend" TM
    https://www.google.com/search?q=GTA...out+when+loading+story+mode&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8

Did you check to see if there are any updates or patches for your version of GTA V?

Have you updated Windows 8.1 completely? Have you updated all your drivers?

Ya just read the review and to see it holding 4ghz for periods of time proves that it will be worth it to me.

Battery? It has a battery? LOL , its typical just like an aw18 with a battery. It works for personal computing but during a game with one GPU prob 1 hour tops.

The answer to this question will be vague no matter how you look at it, you can only go by estimate especially when gaming. With personal computing I would say 2-3 hours maybe less during photoshop depending upon the files you are working with, the battery really isn't meant for gaming or personal computing for long periods but I was able to play a few games such as Dying Light, Project cars and BF4 for around an hour on nvidias battery setting recommendations per game but take this with a grain of salt. With big power hungry systems you can rip a battery in little to nothing or stress the system to the point of shutdown because these are not crippled tdp limited Apple laptops which are built for battery regulating purposes. Nothing against a macbook or a typical ultrabook but its just two totally different game.

GTVEVO, can you please post the link to the article?

I think I saw the 6820HK XTU main config window posted somewhere, and it said 96 seconds was the maximum turbo window - slider all the way to right.

96 seconds is a lot longer than the 28 seconds in the 5950HQ, but still 96 seconds is only 1.5 minutes. Not hours.

The 5950HQ/4890HQ can do 35.5x for extended periods, limited by TDP.

What TDP can the 6820HK maintain, longer than 96 seconds?

"Okey soooooo, its been a long time , i should have answered this before. This is how it worked for me and should probably work for all you guys/girls.
    First:-
Goto the directory where GTA 5 is installed.
    1.) Rename GTA5.exe to GTA5old.exe
    2.) Rename GTA5Launcher.exe to GTA5Launcherold.exe
    3.) Goto update->Rename updatex64.rpf to updatex64old.rpf
    4.) Now goto C:\Users\%Your Username%\Documents\GTA5\
Copy everything in this folder to somewhere else.
Now go back to your GTA5 installation folder , and run PlayGTA5.exe
The game will update some stuff , around 405MB , do that and then you are ready to go.
No game crash in Loading Story mode."

The MSI Reference link is http://www.msi.com/news/2113.html but since the CPU is unlocked the TDP for short and long term boost (PL1 & PL2) will be adjustable so the boost time window won't matter. For example in the video on youtube you will see that the "Turbo Boost power max" & "Turbo Boost Short Power max" is the same at 100watts so the "Turbo boost power time window" is set to 1 sec doesn't matter because the (PL1 & PL2) values are the same.

In the case that MSI sets the max overclock in the BIOS it should be able to be adjusted back through the bios. With the HQ chips you can put any value you want in the bios and it won't matter because the CPU is locked down and won't read it.

GTVEVO, I haven't read the article yet, but I did already see that video when it came out, and if you look closely at the XTU monitoring readings as he pulls away at :54, you can see the Temp is at 94c with 28% Thermal Throttling:

    6820HK Thermal Throttling at 94c.JPG

It is nice you can unlock the CPU and force it to the maximum of whatever power and cooling your laptop can provide, but it is yet to be seen how that works out in reality - in the GT80 and GT72, and of course in the other laptops.

Unless MSI changes the cooling in the GT72 and GT80, I doubt there is enough cooling to sustain 42x, but I am hopeful the GT80 should be able to do 38x-40x :)

Let me check out the article, then I will edit it in later.

True but this seems to be a pencil pusher running one so I don't have much faith. Cooling could be the very reason MSI posted with a 4ghz limit but I would think if we can run those speeds now with no throttling we should be able too with skylakes offerings.

GTVEVO, that's what I was thinking as well after reading that text, up to 40x - due to cooling - but that was the GT72, so we might get a little more headroom.

It will also depend on GPU load as well, as we have a shared heat path in the GT80, I have about 85c +-3c sustained with 100% utilization on the CPU @ 35.5x and both GPU's at 100% for long time periods, so I am guessing that 38-40x will be the range should everything else remain the same - could be a lot more with 0% GPU load.

    It should be interesting :)

the gt72s may have upgraded cooling compared to the GT72 - externally i can't really see a difference between the two models. The GT72s may have been designed to handle the cpu cooling that the GT72 cannot and is, thus, a separate model with higher pricing.

Its kind from you, but... Im so far from you, in my whole country there is only 2 gt80 as second hand, one he asked for 5000$ (a crazy one) the other ask for 2200€ its a huge amount off money in algeria
You have to take in consideration 2200$ represents 10 months of salary :)

My bad, I guess I should've thought twice about posting it here. If anybody is concerned, I did get it fixed so I don't need any help now.
