I've got a Q2E, and it's been great except for a few issues.

I've been trying to get a clean install of windows 10. The stock 256GB SSD is like 120GB occupied when new. After the clean install it was using only 17 GB for just the OS, I'd say that's a huge incentive to get rid of bloatware on a 256GB OS drive.

I've been through the crapper with getting windows 10, thankfully I did make the backup disks, totally saved me from disaster. So I'm back to where I started, upgrading to Windows 10. Question is how do you get a clean install that activated correctly.

I've heard you can do this after one has upgraded to windows 10 and logged in using an MS id.

This thread is huge, any help would be welcome, has anybody been successful?

I do heavy Photoshopping and some cad though... So idk. I also do video editing in after effects and premiere pro for school and rub out of ram in photoshops, after effects, and premiere all the time. I currently have only 8gb in the blade pro...

I think the only way to get a clean install is to first upgrade, then create a new iso, and then use the iso to do a clean install. There is another option in restore, however it is not 100% the same. It does seem to eliminate all files and all, but I read it is not a true clean install.

I am running upgraded right now though. I plan on doing a clean install later when I get higher capacity SSDs. Thinking of getting dual 500GB drives.

mason2smart, those are 16GB SODIMM's, not 8GB, so I think those prices are for individual SODIMM's.

    A pair of 2400mhz DDR4 8GB x 2 = 16GB costs $110

    HyperX Impact 16GB (2 x 8G) 260-Pin DDR4 SO-DIMM DDR4 2400 (PC4 19200) Laptop Memory Model HX424S14IBK2/16
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820104590

So a single 16GB would cost a premium over 2x8GB, and Apacer lists 2400mhz 16GB DDR4 SODIMM costs $139, which makes sense, so the rest of the prices must also be for a single 16GB DDR4 SODIMM:

"...For $299, the 3000MHz version can be yours. The slower modules in the same series are a little cheaper and the 2800MHz SO-DIMMs can be yours for $239, 2666MHz for $219, and 2400MHz for $139."
    http://www.eteknix.com/apacer-reveals-pricing-3000mhz-nox-ddr4-laptop-memory/

    It would be $1200 for 64GB of the 3000mhz DDR4 SODIMM's, 4 x 16GB.

    Or, $600 for 32GB 3000mhz DDR4 SODIMM's, 2 x 16GB.

    Right now you can get 32GB g.skill 2133mhz DDR3 4 x 8GB for $216.99
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231776

"Availability for all four types is set for the end of November, so you might have to pack a little more patience before you can upgrade your mobile gaming station with these modules."

You should be fine with 16GB, but if you feel you must, get 32GB. My wife is a designer and she gets through with 16GB just fine.

ryzeki, but @mason2smart wants to get 16GB SODIMM's, so he should get 2 to enable dual channel best performance, right? Not sure about the DDR4 SODIMM requirements.

Twangsta, as configured out of the box, the 2 x 128GB drives are combined into a RAID0 volume, if you are trying to install on 1 128GB, that really isn't large enough for a C partition - the OS will fit, but after installing lots of apps you will start running out of room - even if you install on the 1TB some stuff often gets put into the C partition system areas, filling up quickly.

To recreate the RAID0 you can go into the BIOS and configuration the 2 x 128GB RAID0 using defaults.

The bloatware is easy to uninstall, it only takes a few minutes.

The Windows 10 problems you are describing are common to Windows 10, here are the most common / active ones here on NBR:

Oh, I said it in my mind apparently hahaha, I meant add to keep the dual channel configuration (though most of you already mentioned it :) ), either by 8GB sticks or 16GB sticks. Honestly I think 64GB is too much but those that can and need, go for it :D

64GB is indeed overkill, I have 32GB on my PC but I haven't had a chance to use them fully.

Hi folks, thanks for the windows 10 pointers, I've tried to reduce the Windows 8.1 disk usage to about 50GB form 120GB, the earlier clean install I did after an upgrade was at 17GB which is great.

Anybody have an clear idea about activation in Windows 10. Say you upgrade from 8.1 to Windows 10. Then use the download tool to created an ISO/USB for a new computer. Does the activation have any issues, last time around I couldn't get it to work, perhaps I didn't use my Microsoft id to log in.

Can anybody confirm a clean install is possible after upgrade and using a Microsoft id to login?

I'm going to give it a shot today, I'll update here if the activation works out. The upgrade takes for ever :/ the clean install is so quick. If activation fails, the reset to 8.1 to start again is so slow with the DVDs :(

Wish they'd just put unix in the backend and grow up.

@hmscott 1200 for 64gb is way too expensive lol. well the only ddr3 sodimm module capable of going 32gb for 2 x 16gb is ~$400 a pair but that would only make 800 at most, for 1600mhz though.

either way this laptop won't be completed without high memory module as with 2133 i think my alienware is already bottlenecking with ram.. wanna know about the cas latency so bad!!!!

theres almost no difference unless certain application/software you're targetting. for the most part, gaming is better on lower CAS, where as video/audio editing is better for bandwidth, as for ramdisk, probably CAS as well kinda like latency. 32gb at 2400 would be enough for skylake cpu imho for gaming purposes.

further more I was planning to add few more 2.5" drive in there even if ODD bay GT80 from MSI doesn't support 6Gbps for w/e reason, was just gonna use power splitter instead of using M.2 SSD just use 2.5" instead, fit 3 of those, 2 in ODD bay would work.

What's a RAM disk? Also what's the difference between Dimm and sodimm, how do I know if latency is good? And is 2x 16 or 4x8 better?

2 x 16 is better, once you gone 4x8 in order to go for more you'll have to buy 2 x16 twice again. ramdisk is using ram for disk space just much faster than general ssd, its good for garbage files and temp files, making a lot of things we do a lot faster and snappier, only down part is boottime decreases.

dimm is for desktop, sodimm is laptop. sodimm usually smaller shorter less PIN and higher CAS.

to find cas, manufacturer will have to let us know lol no way to find out.

RAM disk is a virtual drive that uses system memory to create, which is much faster than anything else, but the down side is that it's also volatile so when you turn off the system, or lose power then all data will be lost.

DIMM is desktop version of memory module, and SODIMM is notebook version of memory module, they aren't physically compatible.

If you are interested with it, then go with 2x16GB for now, otherwise 4x8GB is good enough.

Nvr mind I figured it out. However I noticed the 2666 had a cas latency of 15 vs other slower ones had lower cas latencies if 13 or 14. Is it worth getting the 2666? Does the cas latency make a noticeable difference?

Ram speeds and latencies have very little impact on performance, they are the final cherry on top of a system build for the last 1-2%.

For a rough and ready guess of performance take the speed (2666) and divide by cash latency (15) and the higher the number (=177. 7) the faster the ram.

dont listen to him, we need 2666mhz at cas 3 if possible. cas 15 is a bit high but sounds about right for ddr4, though in a few years ddr4 will prob improve like ddr3 with lower cas, for desktop. for laptop, we are out of luck.

Do I need to fetch the ram speed vs performance charts or are you going to be serious?

2666 will be faster but only by a little bit.

In the end cas latency might be higher, but if memory speed is higher, the overall performance will be higher. Indeed, in the broad sense, ram speed and timings have very little impact in the vast majority if games.

As for speed/timings, a 2133mhz cas 10 will have the same latency as 1033mhz cas 5, but obviousy the 2133mhz will have twice the bandwidth. Sometimes the higher cas might be worth the trade off. But in the end, in gaming and most applications, the performance difference is not really that much.

For those of you looking for newer Realtek + Nahimic for Windows 7,8,10

You can download Nahimic v1.2.7 and audio driver v6.0.1.7592 from MSI >> here <<

    Windows 8 / 10 Upgrade for MSI systems >
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=261600.msg1499264#msg1499264

Using the download link for 1.2.7 + .7592 above, I uninstalled my current Nahimic 1.2.3 then uninstalled .7560, rebooted, installed .7592, rebooted, installed 1.2.7, rebooted, and it is running fine on Windows 8.1.

Note the About Nahimic says it runs on Windows 7 - 10.

Hey, i've been having some issues with my computer lately. I am using the 353.62 drivers and my computer has crashed twice within 30 minutes both while playing Arma 3. Anyone have any idea what it could be? Sorry if my question is a bit vague.

how good is the dyna audio comes with this laptop? compared to aw18 does anyone own both?

@Meaker btw do u think when pascal comes along it'll still be mxm 3.0b and fit into this machine? with new technology + a huge die shrink i'd say it'll save quite a bit of power replacing 980 while obtain higher performance than 980
