Most likely before Christmas. Pls try to read past posts before asking questions - the announcement could be any day now that the 72s has (I think) started shipping

Hey guys, so i got the GT80 2QE 265US and i was loving it for the first month no lie it is a BEAST! (the only thing i did at this point was update to 8.1) but the first time i tried to put it in sleep mode (by pressing the power button by accident no less) it refused to start up without crashing. The laptop is pretty stable, it crashed at least ONCE a day every day and it was semi-driving me crazy. I can live without a sleep mode i guess but random crashes are just unacceptable in such an expensive machine! So the first thing I tried was updating to windows 10 but when i tried that i found it kept failing and giving me a (status_device_power_failure) and then reverted back to 8.1.

At this point i have no idea what is going on so i just went to the basics and brought up device manager and i found a yellow (!) beside Intel Management engine interface and when i right clicked for more info i found the the following error: Device failed to start (code 10) (status_device_power_failure). After many attempts to try fixing it (uninstall and reinstall drivers online, used the driver disk, I even put a new copy of 8.1 on it (that was a bad choice -_-) via usb restore and no dice. At this point i have simply uninstalled it and then disabled the PCI simple controller spot it got replaced with, hoping that this will at least give me the added stability i need to stop it from crashing every day. (Said crash is just a straight death and automatic reboot, no screen or msg of any kind)

I guess what im asking is if anyone else had the same problems as me? I dunno what else to do but post here as im screwed otherwise, getting lackluster product for over 4k$ gets on your nerves.

darkshade, if you are installing the MSI original OS image, from USB 3.0 32GB bootable recovery made with MSI BurnRecovery, and still see a Yellow! in the Devices section, you have a hardware problem, so you need to RMA it to MSI for repair.

If you can't restore the original out of box OS, and can only install Windows 8.1/10 from Microsoft media, and still see the Yellow! even after installing the required driver for the device in question, you likely have a hardware problem and need to RMA back to MSI. Request MSI reload the OS and recovery partition, so you can make a BurnRecovery USB 3.0 32GB bootable recovery flash drive when you get it back from MSI.

You shouldn't be crashing every day. Also, whenever you crash, it is best to do a chkdsk on the C partition - every time - so you can catch corruption on the C partition before it gets so bad it can't be fixed. It's one of the first things to check if you are continually crashing on a previously stable configuration - first thing to check is what have you installed recently :)

Good luck, and please come back and let us know how it works out :)

Ok, Thanks for the help. So it the problem is probebly on the motherboard itself. *sigh* should i just contact MSI direct (like call that number they stuck on everything) or should i contact the site i ordered it from? I have never been involved in an RMA process before

darkshade, did you purchase from a retail or boutique dealer online? If you had the laptop customized by the dealer, you likely can only go through them, but if you bought it stock you can go through the dealer or directly with MSI.

I haven't needed an RMA with MSI, so maybe someone else that has done the process can speak up and help guide you.

What I usually do is contact vendor support first and describe the problem, and then let them ask me the questions they need to ask, do the things they need to have me do, all before filing the RMA - support can do this all for you.

Or you can do it on your own, going directly to the End User RMA:
    https://service.msicomputer.com/msi_user/support/rma_form.aspx

I prefer going through the support first, so all those preliminary questions can be asked, the problem correctly stated and background info attached to the RMA, but you can do that yourself too :)

If you haven't registered your laptop yet, do that first, before doing either RMA or support email, so your info is complete for them to move forward. Sign up and Register:
    https://register.msi.com/home/login

You can track your Support emails through that login, My Support section, and here is the form to fill out for Support:
    https://service.msicomputer.com/msi_user/support/ts_form.aspx

TLDR: Register your laptop, File a Support request, follow instructions from support, or file an RMA directly.

Guys, for those of you that have been reporting video snags/lag/glitches while watching youtube, hulu, netflix, etc, it's likely caused by Nvidia background services.

I usually disable them immediately upon updating the driver, but this time (358.50) I forgot and just noticed annoying hitches in Hulu playback - it wasn't happening right away, it started a couple of days later, just now.

I looked at running processes, and an Nvidia process was taking time, so I went into Manage => Services and set to Disabled all Nvidia processes except the Display Service, and Stopped the processes, it looks like this now:

manage - services - disable all but 1 nvidia services - stop too.JPG
    No more stuttering video :)

This may help for game glitches too. I always do it after a custom/clean install of new Nvidia drivers. I also set these settings in 3D Global settings:

    global 3d settings #1.JPG global 3d settings #2.JPG

Thanks man. What im hopeing is just disabling it will stop the random crashes. If so then i prob wont want to go through the hassle, although i do plan on googling that 32gb MSI bootable and seeing if that at least brings it back to factory settings. Also i have no idea the quality of laptop i would receive back from them, i have managed to keep this baby scratch free so far. Then again, sending it back would let me get rid of the 2 stuck pixels i got. (worst luck ever). But then again a month without a PC...... choices choices

darkshade, yeah, it's possible it could be a month, or longer, but usually it is 7-14 days, mine was 2 weeks last I RMA'd to Asus.

Most support places are good about taking good care of your laptop, especially the high end ones. You can ship it back in it's original box, with the black sheet between the keyboard / screen and the white cloth wrap. You can also double box it if you like.

Usually the vendor ships it back the same way you send it; send overnight or 2nd day insured (important to insure).

Disabling a Yellow! isn't a good idea, it's a part that isn't initializing, which is usually a bad sign - there is something wrong that needs to be fixed - and those things don't usually get better, and sometimes can get worse.

Do you have MSI Burn Recovery installed? Try the CD that came with it. I don't see a download at MSI for it, if you find one please post it. :)

darkshade, there is firmware install in the MB for MEI, and if you somehow corrupted it - install failed during Windows 10 upgrade, it could be fixed simply by uninstalling MEI Windows component, and reinstalling - so the firmware gets re-written / updated / downgraded (from Win 10).

Uninstall the Device first, right click and uninstall, if it asks to delete driver do so, then install the INF chipset driver, currently 10.0.27, use the SetupChipset.exe download
    https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/20775/Intel-Chipset-Device-Software-INF-Update-Utility-

Then use the Engine/driver install for your model, I have model SLI-263 with Broadwell 5950HQ, my Intel ME version is 11.0.0.1146:

That may be all you need :)

i uninstalled the MEI and reinstalled it with the site mentioned before but i did not do anything about the INF chipset, so this time i installed that first and then installed the linked version of MEI. I still have the same issue (yellow!) At this point I know im not going to RMA it because i couldn't bear it. Right now the gt80 doesnt even have ONE scratch on it ANYWHERE. Sending it away only to receive a refurbished model back is just ridiculous and would bite at me each day. Honestly, right now im going to wait to call the seller tomorrow and try to get them to trade it for a new one. If they refuse then il have only two other options left and i dont want to think about either of them.

i tried the disk that came with it, its just a driver disk (i tried that copy of intel ME but still it didnt solve the issue) and no, i remember something sounding like that but all that stuff is lost when i tried fixing it by USB loading windows 8.1

Thanks for all your help, i been racking my head at this for awhile

darkshade, easy part tried, fortunately there are tools to fix this issue. I have had to do this before, it is a pain, and takes some patience and effort to do yourself. You can RMA and let MSI fix it, which is what I recommend.

Or, try the manual modes, cli interface. This is an older link, look for newer versions of the tools, but there are good step by step instructions for debugging / fixes.

    About Intel Management Engine firmware:
    http://forums.tweaktown.com/gigabyte/54860-about-intel-management-engine-firmware.html

Normally I recommend trying to swap for a new one with the seller, but the model is no longer shipping AFAIK so it might be tough finding a new replacement for your model, and I thought you had yours for 2 months, that is way too long outside the return period to bother your seller about it.

You certainly can contact the seller and ask if they can handle the repair.

thanks for that, and you have a point about wanting things too perfect, its just i bought this device to BE perfect you know? if any machine can claim to do it all it would be this desktop killer and i saved up since 2013 to afford it, (and subsequently had to take a break from pc games till now) Like i was considering clear coating the lid so it would be less smudgy (then i sobered up xD), and i still have the wristrest in the plastic packaging so the logo doesn't wear out.

i guess another question would be just HOW important is MEI for this motherboard, i may be able to just get away with it (crosses fingers)

I will see if maybe the seller can repair it in house (would save a TON of time),and your totaly right about the 2 month thing and i doubt they will be jumping for the chance but its worth at least asking.

P.S dont be afraid to hit me with the stick when i need it

darkshade, yeah, had this problem before - updated with the wrong MEI and borked the firmware - got the Yellow! myself, got rid of it by doing the manual cli commands with the toolkit, otherwise I would have been forced to RMA - you need Intel MEI.

Tasks performed by the Management Engine
The main component of Management Engine interface, ME performs a number of tasks in conditions when the system is running or in sleep mode. It also supports several tasks during the boot process. This sub-system is required for proper functioning and maximum efficiency of the PC. The interface checks whether the system is working properly or not while communicating with the operating system of PC."
    http://forums.tweaktown.com/gigabyt...s=927e7896e3e186213dfcf66d9b445101#post470870

This tool might do something for you, if it notices the error correctly:

    Intel® Driver Update Utility
    http://www.intel.com/p/en_US/support/detect?iid=dc_iduu

Your dealer should be helpful with support, just not with the notion of swapping it for a new one so far in to the warranty. :)

so i tried that tool and it did a scan and told me i didnt need any drivers. upon reading the full thread about MEI and what it does, i keep thinking that its pretty useless. Sure it SOUNDS important, but if disabling stops the crashes then im fine without sleep mode or remote access. *siiigh* what happened to PCs the last few years, I miss windows 7 straight up

darkshade, MEI has many roles, the remote part is very helpful for me in the real world, but the other features - providing an interface into the BIOS / services from Windows is what we need as Windows users.

It's important enough to pursue getting it fixed. Resale value is also involved - what buyer is going to be happy with that glitch in play?

The Utility tool is useless, I was hoping it would do something when up against a Yellow! - I don't get many of them and have been meaning to try it - thanks. :)

Think on it, and get that Toolkit and start exploring those details for digging into the firmware on the MB, and jacking in the right stuff. It's really not that hard.

And, above all, Have Fun :)

Sorry, random hardware questions which are kinda relevant, but not sure where to ask. From my understanding, the PCIe SSDs would be connected to a PCH, right? If so, at max throughput, it's consuming a good 80+% of the DMI 3.0 bandwidth. Is it 3.93GB/s in both directions at the same time, or is that the total bidirectional bandwidth? Does display output via USB-C and/or DP eat into this bandwidth as well, or does it get to use FDI or whatever the equivalent is these days like the iGPU?

    Thanks!

Hey, ive had the exact same problem as you, except I haven't tried upgrading to windows 10. I have the yellow exclamation point next to the management engine and everything! The only other difference is that I have the 263 model instead of the 255 model. Do I need to RMA mine too?

I am sure they will come with the GT80s series too, when they started they said it would be a limited supply but they seem to be offering them plus more in some cases. I wouldn't worry, wait until its out and then you will know for sure otherwise pick a set up from ebay.

SizeDrip, one of the things that Intel MEI supports is SLEEP. So, you want to get it fixed.

If you read my posts, I suggested contacting MSI Support first to see if they can help - they might see this problem enough to have written a step by step fix - or immediately recommend RMA...

Please go back and look for the links in my post(s) - register your laptop first, then email MSI Support letting them know of the problem and what they suggest for a fix. RMA may come later if their suggestions won't work.

SizeDrip, @darkshade , my Device entry for Intel Management Engine Interface is running driver version 11.0.0.1146, so give the 11 series installer a try if you have Broadwell like what I have, 5950HQ, SLI-263.

For those of you with SLEEP / SUSPEND / Power issues, look to see if any of your Device entries have a YELLOW ! showing.

This is probably a dumb question, but where do I get that driver? I couldn't find that specific version of the driver on the MSI support page, and I couldn't find it on Intel's support section either.

SizeDrip, it came from the GT80 SLI-263 (Broadwell) download area, under Win10 drivers:

The newer version 11.0.0.1173 available on the Intel site should be ok too :)

SizeDrip, darn, I guess you are going to need to dig up that Intel Management Engine toolkit and do some debugging, and/or contact MSI and ask them for help.

So I'm back, again. This time with more interesting news. I was digging around on the internet and found that Intel management engine interface version 9.0.0.1287 could fix the problem. I installed the driver, and had some odd results. While the exclamation point went away in the device manager, the keyboard stopped functioning and sleep would still crash the computer. I reverted back to the intel driver you said to try and also rolled back the keyboard driver which seemed to fix my keyboard.

SizeDrip, did the Yellow ! come back, or is it still gone? Is Sleep "working" again - no crashing?

The yellow ! came back after I reverted drivers. Sleep still crashes unfortunately. I'm pretty much back where I started.

Did you try wiping the computer and resetting the bios?

SizeDrip, darn, I guess it's time to see what MSI Support says...after getting 1 poor answer, escalating to a manager, and asking for an Engineer to help debug the problem with you :)

I emailed MSI support a few hours ago. I'll see what they say. I don't want to RMA this laptop; but I will if I have to.

So I got a reply, and they told me to update my drivers. I'll let you guys know if I actually get somewhere with MSI support.

    Found this:
    http://www.overclockers.com/forums/...o-fix-your-BIOS-if-there-is-corrupted-ME-area

So a simple version of this would be to reset defaults within BIOS - see if that helps as a start.

Then flash to a newer BIOS, if available.

Somehow clear the ME area of the BIOS.

MSI will start from scratch with the debugging, don't get discouraged, help them catch up to where you are now. :)
