Hey guys, im curious if one of yall could help me out here. So i just picked up the gt80 titan and here are my specs:
    MSI GT Series GT80 Titan SLI-094 Gaming Laptop 4th Generation Intel Core i7 4720HQ (2.60GHz) 16GB Memory 1TB HDD 256GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 965M SLI 8 GB GDDR5 (4GB x 2) 18.4" Windows 8.1

A huge reason for this buy was the fact of its upgradablilty. I am currently playing fallout 4 however it kinda sucks ass, this titan cant seem to handle it and it runs super choppy. i think its due to the weak cpu i opted for. Is the upgradeabilty only for the graphics cards, or can i upgrade the cpu as well? Im looking through msi's website for the the indivudal parts to upgrade into however i dont really know where to start, could one of u experts give me ur advice to this? i just wna play some fallout yo and i dont mind to drop some $$.

    Thanks a ton!

FO4 is new, with performance issues being reported, one of which is that it doesn't have an SLI profile yet (only running on 1 GPU).

Suspiciously / Ominously, Nvidia pulled the FO4 Performance Tuning Guide:

    http://www.geforce.com/whats-new/guides/fallout-4-graphics-performance-and-tweaking-guide

...which was pretty extensive, just after FO4 release, and hasn't put it back up, so they are likely figuring out what to do about the shipping versions performance issues.

Here is the Google cached version:
    http://webcache.googleusercontent.c...nd-tweaking-guide#fallout-4-graphics-settings

That doc has coverage of the tuning options, you should be able to improve things a bit by tuning down some options.

    Here at NBR:

    Fallout 4 System Requirements/Recommendation
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/fallout-4-system-requirements-recommendation.782496/

So, it's not your GT80, it's the game - not unusual these days with new AAA releases.

    How bad can it be?
    I'm running it "playable", although lowest settings (except a few) @ 1080p, on my Alienware14 - i7 4720HQ & a single GTX 765M

So right now, if I were to upgrade to the GT80S-SLI002 (dual 980m's) in order to enjoy fallout maxed out, would I be disapointed?

You will get better answers moving to an on topic thread like the one here at NBR or at the FO4 support site. Let's keep this thread on topic, the GT80 isn't unique in issues with F04 performance, it's the game.

I believe SLI is not supported so a single 980 in the gt72 would technically give the best performance in that game.

no with laptop even desktop, mobo default state is always with cstate ON to save power, as most of the time computer is idle no point having cstate OFF. I only turn it back on when I leave for work to lower temperature and save power thats about it.

power difference, never bothered to test but let say a computer battery can last 2hrs on wifi or watch movie, at the same clock with cstate turned off it'll last maybe 30 mins or less? lol.

performance increase isn't all that great, about 5% which is still decent.

sata port for msi gt 80s could be sata 1.5Gbps so your ssd is limited to that speed, unless they changed it from previous gen.

That's the reason for Intel Speed Shift technology, allowing you to always leave the Balanced Performance power profile enabled - the switching is now so fast - 1ms vs 30ms - that even with it on - frequency changes are fast enough that performance is like it is off.

Leave SpeedStep/Speed Shift on and reduce temps, power consumption, by running on Balanced mode as well. You don't need to have 100%/100% CPU High Performance set as your power plan.

This could boost scores for highest OC where you might thermal throttle at 100% CPU all the time under High Performance, you could run on Balanced Performance and get an even higher score - cooling in between load peaks lets you eliminate heat build up and not thermal throttle. :)

5% for overall performance doesn't equate to real life experience though but in terms of storage SSDs/USB, its more like 10%, which speedshift might not do the trick.

anyone has a gt80s in their hands yet? care to test how high multipler of CPU can go to and voltage/temperature it carry with 44+ multiplier? also test to see if ODD sata port can provide 6Gbps isntead of 1.5Gbps..

still thinking choosing between GT80s or clevo's 870. 17inch/18inch, one which can be delided and go for a cherry chip, both support dual psu, one might be able to hold 1 more 2.5" SSD which is a plus.

unityole, if it all works as advertised, the Intel Speed Shift + Speed Step has a chance of improving processes that use hi levels of CPU that can benefit from quick response to clock changes.

CrystalDiskMark and other apps that are performance sensitive to using High Performance vs Balanced Performance power plans should benefit.

You should be able to stay on Balanced Performance power plan instead of switching to the High Performance power plan to get the best throughput numbers, there may still be a difference, but it will be smaller than without Speed Step.

We've seen Intel briefly get the 6820HK to 4.2ghz -until it thermally throttled seconds later and they stopped the XTU benchmark test.

So far we have only seen the 6820HK run stably for gaming / apps at 4.0ghz.

I am not holding out much hope for 4.4ghz :)

The 6920HQ might run better, I would like to see if XTU will allow multiplier changes, like try 41x, then 42x - either might need positive voltage offset for the CPU / cache.

My GT80 SLI-263 with 5950HQ is stable with -15mv @ 40x, +60mv @ 41x, +115mV @ 42x, all cores. @ 36x cache multiplier needs no cache voltage offset change, but if I go to 37x cache it needs positive cache voltage offset of +0.9 to 40x, then +1.9 for 41x/42x.

The 6700HQ with XTU won't allow multiplier changes... updates of XTU could fix this...and the 6920HQ if it doesn't work out of the gate with the current XTU version.

Your CPU is not weak at all, and there is little performance to be gained in most games, by higher end CPUs. Only very specific mobiles CPU have higher performance, but this does not mean you can't play at over 100fps.

Your problem is the weak GPUs with fallout 4 being a terrible coded game, that does not support SLI. Once SLI is properly implemented, you should have enough performance.

By the way, mobile CPUs are no longer upgradeable because intel now only ships soldered CPUs to mobiles. It sucks but at least 4720hq is pretty powerful.

Fallout is a terrible excuse of an optimized game, and does not support SLI. A single 980m can still play on high to max settings at 1080 resolution at good framerate. nVidia recommends a GTX970 desktop GPU for 1080 resolution in fallout, and 980m is close to that. Performance will only get better with future patches.

I am 100% certain you can get very high multipliers with 6820hk, I wouldn't sweat it. I don't think 6920hq is a good alternative because it will be TDP locked for sure. It might sport a better IGPU than 6820hk, but other than that, 6820hk will undoubtedly achieve higher performance.

Obviously, this is only for those with a heart for tweaking :) others will get zero benefit from it hahaha :)

Damn. I really wanted a new laptop for gaming in general but mainly for the best fallout 4 experience..
I really doubt SLI wont be supported at all by bethesda

    EDIT: found this

can anyone confirm that SLI does work and maybe how it runs/framerates @ ULTRA 1080p please?

And, there is a new Nvidia driver for FO4 + recent releases - 358.91
    http://www.nvidia.com/download/driverResults.aspx/94208/

The method in that video is the roll your own method by building on previous profiles - fortunately FO series has a running set of samples.

If you strike up a convo with @ImmortanJoe and get him to test SLI, please post back here to share :)

GenTechPC, does that mean that they moved that M.2 SATA III interface to the 2.5" bay? That would be awesome if the 2.5" bay upgraded from SATA II to SATA III :)

Well thats a true disappointment but thanks for the heads up, the 2.5 must be sata 6 and I bet the BD Bay is prob sata 3 now if I had to guess. That messes with the entire plan.

I can confirm it runs on ultra without sli on 1x980m I haven't played but 10 min but didn't seem to have any issues on a single card. I will get a bit farther today and report if something goes through the roof once I am out and about the land.

I find its graphics ugly to ask for such power machine, no deference between falllout 3 and 4 lol, same gameplay, in my opinion only the storyline is a plus.

I was really hoping MSI would keep this round $4500 or under. They really seem to be charging a huge premium the extra hype; but who knows, I have seen some crazy prices on electronics overseas that are a lot cheaper here in the States, so there is still hope for some of us. Not to talk down on anyone who plays consoles and haven't joined the master race yet, but they are still selling for upwards of $600 in some areas.

    Which does msi do?

Do they bin or cherry-pick CPU's and GPU's for the GT80s?

The GTX 980 GPUs for notebooks would have to be binned since heat is a factor and overclocking is an advertised feature. The 980M cards are not binned and aren't ideally engineered either.

I was able to enable SLI and finally get the game compatible with my 21x9 monitor and after the tweeks it runs pretty well and locked at 60fps with gpus at 60-75% usage. On a single 980m @ 1920x1080 with all settings maxed it runs between 50-60fps just so everyone knows so knock down a few settings and it should lock at 60fps 99% of the time.
