Thanks ZoOLf. Well that could crush the dream for a cheaper version with the 970. I'm still keeping my fingers crossed for a cheap version before buying the 980m model.

You mean a 970m? Because 980m is somewhat close to desktop 970.

There might be a version later down the road, but who knows. There have been titans with 965m, 970m, 980m and now full 980. You never know!

When u guys talk about the CLU cooling option from gentech is it an addition to the IC Diamond or another unlisted option.
There are 'Thermal Compound' upgrades, Stock and IC Diamond, and 'Copper Cooling Upgrade' upgrade, no copper and copper upgrade..
Anyway is CLU the copper upgrade or just a different thermal compound?
    Sorry for my ignorance :/

It's good to ask questions. That's what the board is for.

CLU is a thermal compound that is not often offered because unlike other offerings, it carries the most risk when not applied properly. It is among the best possible thermal compounds to use, but personally, I wouldn't worry about it. IC Diamond is good too, and so are a bunch of others. It tends to matter more the way you apply it rather than the compound, when you use high quality stuff.

CLU is risky because it is liquid metal, so it is conductive and if you put a small amount in the wrong place by mistake, or if it spills because you placed to much, you have a high risk of shorting your system, damaging the CPU, motherboard etc.

Copper cooling is mainly placing copper blocks along the heat pipes, as means to increase area of contact with air low, thus helping with overall temps.

In some machines, it helps a lot, in others, it hardly helps. User kfxsti is testing with copper blocks and mods, but right now he is sick so he will take a bit more time to finish and post results. I also have a mod project on my own, by adding a third fan, but between work and family, I haven't had time nor money to continue.

Clu is not offered by gentech - if you want clu you will need to get the computer from xotic pc like i am doing. It will be a special customization you put in comments box when submitting your order.

I don't know, should I get the copper cooling and CLU or should I just stick to IC Diamond by gentch?
I am not planning on any 'hardcore' OC (or should I?) right now but I'd like my laptop not to overheat under load (like my current Alienware14 on fallout 4 *lol*) :)

Next week I am finaly ordering my new TITAN(!), and to be honest, I just like GentechPC more for some reason. But they don't offer these cooling options so I am yet to decide..

Nice score. It is good. In line with my small overclock :)

Excellent choice :) the CPU is very powerful and will not be a problem. My 4720HQ is slightly slower and I have no issues maxing games and having kickass performance.

Hahaha don't worry my friend. the titan on stock does not overheat. The mods and thermal paste are to improve on stock and prepare for overclocking. Also, you can use turbofan if temperatures are a big concern, as well as a nice cooling pad.

Order from wherever you feel positive about :) There are a lot of resellers here, most participating and helping others, and they are legit places. I recommend resellers more than sites like amazon because they offer better support. I have dealt with GentechPC numerous times and they are awesome :)

I have my titan with IC diamond from gentech, and I run fine with no problems :) I also use Cooler master U3 for cooling pad in case you are interested.

If you do plan to do hardcore overclocking, I suggest you go into it slowly, learn before doing anything so that you can enjoy great gains and don't damage your notebook! There are a lot of tweaks one can do that may damage your computer so definitely take it slowly if you are new to it.

Anyways, a lot of users here even run stock titans with no cooling upgrades, and they are fine. Also, repasting might be one of the things you might want to learn! its awesome to take care of your own machine. If you learn repasting, you can apply thermal paste to your machine carefully and have even better results. Also, opening up your laptop does NOT void warranty. you void warranty if you damage your computer only.

I am actually tempted of repasting with CLU myself.

I'm still having a plethora of issues with this laptop since I bought it in August. I'm assuming driver compatibility issues so I went back to 8.1 Windows for now. Also what is the most efficient way to keep all of the MSI hardware and applications drivers up to date???

What sort of issues are you having? At this point even my titan is 100% stable in win10, and im one of the original launch ones haha.

The best way is to first have the latest drivers from MSI page, and then if nothing is broken, generally don't fix it. Some things like SCM require weird steps like uninstalling, rebooting, reinstalling, rebooting, and sometimes even reinstalling again before everything works well. It's weird. But so far everything works.

The only unstable thing with me and a small number of titans, is the nvidia drivers. Any driver after 353.62 would result in weird hiccups during normal usage, not gaming, as well as crashes. So 353.62 is the best for us currently. I have tried most releases and hot fixes after those and they all present the problem. Drivers before 353.62 all work well.

Recommendation would be to use MSI's drivers.

You didn't get a response from them today? Try calling...

BTW, the 230w power supply has a different connector, it won't plug in to the GT80(S).

no they responded finally - they said they were sorry and updated the order and wanted 20$ more for the 330Watt making it 180$ instead of 160$... :( . However, they are still the cheapest i have seen for this brick unless u know somewhere else i can find it that is cheaper?

So long as it's the 4 pin plug then they do match, yes. A power box lets you hook up two power supplies at once.

The battery charging circuit will draw up to a certain point and no further, no laptop battery can be charged with 300W spare at idle ;)

The idea is to supply extra power during overclocking.

Thanks for info on the drivers. Another question I have is can this laptop handle the new DSR resolution without using an external monitor?

DSR is an internal processing feature rather than anything to do with the panel.

I don't think Nvidia have added it in for mobile GPUs just yet.

DSR is working for the GT80 980m SLI-263, and has for the last few Nvidia driver releases. I would imagine single 980m / 980's are/will also work.

    Nvidia current release 358.91

That price seems high at $180. I paid $99 to Asus direct for my Asus 230w power supplies, and $119 for the 180w's - weird reverse pricing / watt.

I thought I saw it for $165 as an add-on when I was configuring the GT80 on boutique sites early on, but it looks like $199.99 is the new standard price, so $180 + shipping seems fair.

The advantage of using dual PSU is higher headroom for overclocking. As meaker said. The main issue with overclocking is that the titan has incredibly power hungry parts, that if you use outside of stock, will rapidly increase power consumption, and go beyond your single PSU. This can damage the PSU, and end up self protecting by shutting down and thus insta-cutting power off of your machine.

Yes you can use DSR although I don't like how blurry it looks compared to native crips 1920x1080 res. I'd say you will get more benefit by overclocking the monitor instead of using DSR, as means of improving something hahaha.

    Yep, exactly.

Cool, so they finally did add it in, good. In that case no reason for it not to work across all panels internal and external.

@Kevin@GenTechPC , what about the 2.5" bay? Still SATA II, or did MSI bump it up to SATA III?

On the GT80 the SD3 M.2 SATA III slot is close enough to the 2.5" bay, I was thinking of using a M.2 SATA III to SATA III cable to plug in a 2.5" SSD - so I could run full 500+MB/sec.

the optical bay will need to be big enough and hopefully fit two 7mm SSD so we can use remaining two M.2 SATA port to put in 2 2.5" SSDs in there.
