It has a December ETA, so I'm thinking early December in order to get them in for the holidays. Now I have to decide if I want to save the extra grand for this or go with the GT80S with dual 980ms. Hopefully some stats and reviews will be out soon.

Well, I ran witcher 3 maxed at 30fps at 4K :) with some drops in the 20s

Yeah, my thoughts exactly. I hope they do release a 6820hk but I doubt it.

I understand. I still have a little less than 3 weeks before I can make my order and I'm starting to lean toward saving the extra $1000 so I can get this if the reviews come back good.

Hey! You won't be disappointed with the GT80s-002. I just got mine and I love it. Great machine! You could use that extra $1,200 to upgrade the 002...64 GB ram, 4x m.2 512 Cards...a 2 - 4 TB hard drive...maybe even get another bag-and it will be less than the 1,200 you'll be spending on the Flagship model. Food for thought... :)

Ok get some numbers up and lets get some overclocking done

Wait does it have 4xm.2 slots? I thought they said the gt80s only had 3.

    @GTVEVO @MSIGeno

Do we know if the new GT80S SLI-072 980 SLI can be upgraded with new MXM cards like the GT80, SLI-263 for example?

Is there a promised 2 GPU architecture MXM upgrade future for the new GT80S coming out now?

In the video game industry, AAA (pronounced "triple A") is a classification term used for games with the highest development budgets and levels of promotion or the highest ratings by a consensus of professional reviewers. ripped from wikipedia

For example: Metal Gear Solid V Phantom Pain, GTA V, Crysis 3, Far Cry 4, or Fallout 4

There's nothing faster than the fastest at any point in time.

Waiting for the next fast model down the road is wasted time.

The GT80S-072 is going to be the fastest GT80(S), even faster for gaming than the fastest Clevo / Sager / Alienware out now, or for the foreseeable future - none of them have a planned 980x2 model.

Even if a Clevo/Sager/Alienware 2 x 980 came out it would be priced in the stratosphere. These guys are buying $6000+ equivalents to the GT80S SLI-002. The CPU is faster, noisier, and does nothing for gaming.

If you are buying a GT80S now, and can stretch for the 980 SLI-072, you are going to be able to hold out for a long time and get better resale value than the 980m SLI's. Probably $1200 worth.

Doing the match, the 980 SLI is about 30% faster, and costs about 30% more than the SLI-002.

Don't wait, game now, make that December (sometime).

yeah except the 800m series wasn't even out for a year before the 900 series came out, which has had a 2 year reign - nvidias usual cycle is to have 2 cards for each architecture, the second card being a more mature form of the architecture and often much more powerful than the preceding card and with a lot longer reign as well...

You just described the 980 SLI :)

For the 1080 to be at the same level of maturity you would have to wait through 2 releases.

If Pascal 1st gen is ludicrous speed, then everyone will want to upgrade - they won't want to wait for 2nd gen Pascal, and that's what I want to make sure of, that the GT80S SLI-072 can be upgraded.

Yes but the 1000 series's will have short lifespan compared to the 1100 series which will also be much more powerful. Best to wait for the 1100 series or by that time just save up for new computer lol.

    The 1080 => 1180 are likely 3-4 generations away. 1080 1st, 1080 2nd, and 1180 1st, 1180 2nd.

You might as well plan on buying one for your kids too ;)

I wouldn't bother. We've never been stuck on a process that has existed for 4 years. nVIDIA and AMD have had a long time to develop their product.

To me, the 980s are similar to the TitanZ. A last chance to squeeze profit just before a new architecture, that's just months away.

I haven't heard an official promise on this series and gauranteed future gpu support but the cards are mxm so if you can resource the parts and the correct vbios they should work but we will have to wait for some more info to understand if it will work as a factory solution or an enthusist solution.

Hopefully Geno can get more solid info for us on this one from a factory support standpoint.

It's also 30% faster than the next slowest alternative, profit earned :)

If you are buying a GT80S now, your purchase cycle makes your need immediate, then why not get the fastest if you can afford it? 30% more cost for 30% more performance. Seems reasonable.

What's the difference between getting a 980m SLI or a 980 SLI right now as compared to future unknown release of Pascal mobile SLI? Both are going to be surpassed by Pascal.

But between now and then with the 980 SLI you have the fastest laptop available, and you can use it through the first 6 months of working out the bugs in the new Pascal / Cannonlake(?) architecture - new Nvidia drivers, new chipset drivers, etc, etc.

You will want to get Pascal on Cannonlake, right? Not Skylake or Kabylake.

The Pascal mobile you really want might be further down the road than you think.

Why not enjoy a GT80S SLI-072 until then?

You know. I have not checked under the hood yet. I just assumed it had 4 because the previous model had 4. I'll have to check that out and get back to you.

Yea i have a Razer Edge Pro. Its a neat little niche product, it plays games decently well, it runs GTA V on medium settings, crysis 3 on mediumish low and various other games. In terms of portability its a really great for on the go gaming HOWEVER ull want to have some form of tablet of something to lean the device on while gaming, its not exactly light. Audio is not impressive yet not terrible. Overall the device is really handy, it fits my needs for on the go gaming however battery life could've been improved (my edge lasts around 2.5 ish hours of straight gaming ).

Usually you get a decent jump per core design/node shrink but less on average without a process change, so no guarantee that the 1180m would be a lot faster than the 1080m. (assuming naming stays the same)

Yes, your kids would be next gen

It's unknown how long / thin the Pascal generation will be drawn out. 1080m is 1 generation. 1080 Desktop Mobile might not be a new generation.

Now that the gt80s is out I'm worried at the future of my GT80, does it mean all high end nvidia cards will have his new design making upgrading to a high end you impossible on our current gt80 devices?

If they make that the norm no one will be able to afford gaming notebooks. If they don't hold trup to their program for 2 gpu generations then they will lose customers.

You see the thing is MSI isn't the one to blame here if nvidia doesn't make the cards like they did before then MSI will be forced to use whatever nvidia makes. Same applied to the two year upgrade program MSI had no way of knowing nvidia would do something like this.

No they won't. They can go the way of ASUS and make their own cards. The cards with extra power phases are still MXM.

    Sure thing.
Either way, I'm getting my laptop to be with 32GB DDR4 2400Mhz Kingston HyperXImpact CL14 Dual-Channel 8G X 4 RAM, IC Diamond Thermal Compound, 512GB Samsung 950 Pro NVMe Gen-3 4X Lanes RAID 0 SSDs, Windows7 "upgrade" and a Factory Recovery Disk.
Same configuration on the GT80S-072 is 1,100$ more expensive.

Where did u see the SLI-074? I only saw 072.
If I would go with the 2x980Desktop it would be for future GPU upgrading compatibility.
But from what I've heard up until now there isn't enough power to fully OC the 072 and you could OC the 002 to be as powerful, or atleast almost, as the desktop GPU version.

    Where did u see SLI-074???

    - 5,500$ is ALOT for a new laptop.
I'm streching it enough for the SLI-002 (4,400$) and I don't think I'll be missing out, performance-wise, for the next year or two.

Aren't MXM cards protected by copyright though? There is a reason the only way you get MXM cards is through an enterprise-only distributor owned by Nvidia.

    1. What game were you playing
    2. What settings were you using
    3. Are you sure you had the GPUs on while playing
    4. Have you monitored your temperature
    5. Did you mess around with MSI Afterburner

Seems kinda random to just drop without any explanation.
