    Hi Geno!
Recently i bought my GT72 then i saw that there is a sticker blocking one of the screws of the bottom lid, so i ask at MSI support if removing it would really void my warranty ant the person that answered me said it would! Is he right???

    Hi,
I would like to get the MSI GT70 2QD-2292US. It doesn't come with a SSD but I would like to instal it myself to save some money.
Is it doable? If so how can I do it?

    Thanks

Yes, you can instally any drive you want on your machine. Depending on your model, you might need the msata adapter, but other than that, you have the stock 2.5inch bay.

    Kevin and Ryzeki,

I found a solution to the issue. This will resolve the strange delay for the right and left click button issue on the touchpad. I will try to make the steps easy to follow.

    1. Disable tap-to-click by right-clicking the synaptics icon in the taskbar (lower right corner of your desktop)
    2. Shut down your GT80. NOT restart.
    3. Power up your GT80. ***DO NOT ENABLE THE NUMPAD UNTIL STEP 8 ***. It appears toggling the numpad is what presents the issue.
    4. Uninstall your synaptics driver from the "uninstall program" in control panel
    5. Download the MSI touchpad driver from their website http://download.msi.com/nb_drivers/...4__Win7_Win8_Win81__Signed__msi_18.1.29.7.zip
    6. Run the driver install found in the zip. DO NOT use the driver provided by MSI in their CD.
    7. Restart after installation is complete
    8. There should now be no issue with the right and left click buttons. You can also enable / disable the numpad now without the issue appearing.

I confirm that this resolved the clicking issue with the touchpad buttons. I can now click immediately and double click things to execute.

Thanks kranebrain! GT80 now running with 0 issues! :D

Are some of the MS60 2QE variants being phased out in the UK? Only the 4K and FHD 1080p models seem to be available with the 2.6Ghz i7-4720HQ processor and both the FHD 1080p (i7-4720HQ) and the 3K (2.5Ghz i7-4710HQ processor) seem to be very thin on the ground. Ideally I want an FHD 1080p machine, or the 3K model as a second choice, but I'm not going to be in a position to buy until March and am concerned that these models are not going to be available any more then...

BTW I have just received this confirmation from MSI UK (I submitted a support question through the UK MSI website):

Can I open the case to upgrade the RAM and SSD without invalidating UK Warranty?

    Content:
    Dear Customer,

MSI users are allowed to void the warranty sticker to upgrade RAM, HDD and also for cleaning purposes. However, please note that any mechanical damages which may occur during mentioned actions will not be covered under manufacturer's warranty.

    Hi

I experimented with the GTX980M in my MSI GT72 when I had some strange findings:

    - even at stock clocks without voltage increase (stock bios too off course) the MSI GT72 switches to HYBRID POWER (drawing power from AC adapter AND battery)
    - this should only happen if the AC adapter is not able to provide enough power
    - I checked with a power meter and also dragon gaming center readings (which are quiet comparable) - never saw more then 210 Watt
    - with stock bios but the little OC possible with default nvidia driver until and including 347.25 things get so bad that hybrid power is almost constantly ON in 3dmark firestrike runs (about 220 Watt power draw)
    - this will use up battery and thus also result in more recharge cycles needed -> battery is aging faster

So why is the GT72 switching to hybrid power when it still requires less that 230 Watt with a 230 Watt AC adapter ?
I do not know if MSIGeno is able to escalate this to MSI but I'd love to see an official answer...

I'd also like to know if the GT72 would detect a more powerful AC adapter (DELL seems to be compatible) would be detected und thus help to take load of the battery

This is an interesting find and worth checking out by MSI. You should open up a case with MSI directly and send them feedback of your finding.

As for the battery aging faster, you shouldn't worry about it. My GT60 uses hybrid power considerably more than your GT72, and after more than a year and a half, it has only around 5% wear.

Just received my brand new GS60 4K 80 replacement, again the battery has a very high wear level ~ 15% and battery calibration didn't help, Can msi rep comment on this please? @MSIGeno ?

    Hey Seagate,

All of our laptops batteries that we use are brand new. We estimate that these batteries should have about a 1-5% wear level, so if your unit has an unusual high wear level, even with a calibration, then the particular unit may have an issue.

If you can, please email [email protected] with this issue and include the specific details of your testing and findings. Henry is our tech support supervisor, and he can try to help you out with this issue.

    Thanks!
    Geno

    Hi @MSIGeno ,

I've emailed Henry a few weeks ago but there's no reply yet, I left him a voice message and I didn't get any reply either, the thing is that it's not just me, someone on the forum just posted the same thing, I've experienced this twice on 2 brand new GS60, even htwingnut's review unit had the same high wear level ........... so something must be wrong somewhere ....... could you please look into this.

    Thanks much

Perhaps the battery has a % "saved" similar to what the GT72 experienced at first?

Yes, if my memory is correct, for the GT72 a firmware update was released, correcting this issue.

    hi, I have a question.

I'm thinking of buying this laptop, the GT60 1065. I've been looking at videos and reviews but I havent been able to locate the msata ports, only the two full sata ones. From what i understand, the laptop supports two full 2.5 sata drives AND two msata drives, is this correct ?

Let's ask whoever having this symptom to update BIOS and EC firmware, see if the issue goes away or not.

As far as I can remember, GT60 only supports one of either these configurations (1 x 2.5 inch sata bay, 3x msata drives) or (2 x 2.5 inch bays). In both cases, the optical disc drive can be removed to use it as an additional 2.5inch bay using a caddy tray.

This is, of course, for the GT60 series since... probably 2013. :)

Geno, will we be able to purchase a replacement of the Gold Metal Key cap that came with the GT80 at some point? I wanted to ask because I can see that these could possibly show some wear down the road.

We will not be offering the Gold Metal Keycaps that come with the GT80 as a standalone purchase. These are going to be limited for this run of GT80's. :)

    Hello,
My question is, is there going to be a MSI GS60 Ghost Pro with a GTX 970M and a 4K screen capable of 60Hz? If so when?

    Thank ya

Most likely yes, but there needs to be more widely available 4k panels rather than a single option or two. Give it time.

When can we expect an update to the gs30 shadow? and are you guys planning on implementing a dedicated graphics solution to the laptop in the future?

I don't suppose there's any chance of a GS40 model with a 14" screen, no numpad, and reasonable GPU (e.g. Nvidia 965M)? One can dream...

I hope they do some more with the dock, I'm not wanting anything above 14" but I also need a laptop with dedicated graphics. So I hope they update the gs30 (notice it's 001 model) with a real mobile solution. All I need is a 960m at the least. But I love the whole dock thing, I don't want to go AW though, so much problems people are having over there.

    Hey MSIGeno,

I'm trying to do a product registration for my GS60 notebook -- I bought it in Canada, but when I go to register my account, it takes me to the U.S site instead of the Canadian site. Does it really matter what region I register my account in? Or can I just register on the U.S and the warranty will carry over to Canada? Or is it just a generalization of North American customers?

it doesn't make sense saving % unless it was by mistake, razer blade has 70Wh battery, gs60 only has 50Wh, saving 15% makes no sense, on top of that the percentage fluctuates from 13-16% so i doubt this is intentional......

GT72 had about 30% reserved sort of like an emergency UPS system, and it showed as wear level. After an update, they released it and it was back to its original capacity.

I'm running the latest Firmware/EC on my GS60 970m, and I've had the same ~15% wear level out of the box. Everyone that's checked over in the 970m thread also has this shown, so it's not a defective unit you've got so much as a system wide "issue". I'm not actually convinced it's a problem though, as the battery life is comparable to my original 860m GS60 which always showed ~4% wear. Maybe just a reporting glitch.

Would be curious to at least see MSI acknowledge it, but by no means am I concerned about it.

Thanks for the acknowledgement @be77solo , I agree it might not be a defect or a serious problem, the funny thing is that if you check gentech's gs60 review the battery wear was only 3%, but it'll be nice if MSI would acknowledge this since so many people experience the same thing and of course provide a solution (whatever the underlying problem is, hopefully it's not a real battery defect), @MSIGeno ?

Follow the instruction to flash BIOS/EC and you will be alright.
Make sure your system is stable prior to flashing.

Any chance MSI will override Nvidia's block on overclocking on the drivers from MSI?

I ask because I spent $100s extra on a GT72 for the cooling it provides and now I more or less just wasted that money when I could have bought a base model NP8652 for $1650 last Christmas instead.

There is no way I can suggest a GT72 [...or any single 980m laptop over $2k] to anyone from a price : performance perspective now.

EDIT: ...or does MSI plan on offering AMD mobile GPUs on their MXM upgrade program? ...GOD knows I won't be getting another OC-less mobile Nvidia GPU.

You could try using the driver from NP8652 and see if it loads or not, or force install.
However, their driver is very original so YMMV.

I didn't spend over $2k to stay on the same driver for ~3 years.

I am incredibly mad right now.

Relax my friend. I am sure you will simply have to switch to modded drivers, while the officials block overclocking.

It's a weird decision to be sure... Sorta glad I haven't updated drivers haha.

LOL! I wouldn't worry about all that..... Svet (MSI User Forum Admin) can unlock most anything, and says a Vbios mod should not be a problem. Also, his latest Vbios tool has an EC Editor, which allows adjusting fan curve, temp curve, and temp threshold hysteresis.....even for the GT80 Titan.

When there is a will, there is always a way.......

Anyhow, MSI is not to blame........ THIS from ManuelG of NVidia Customer Care:

Yup, Svet can do just about anything.
But as far as MSI's official stance, no overclocking will be supported by them and this could well be a policy from Nvidia anyway since they wrote the driver but not MSI.

According to MSI, this feature was introduced in the engineering unit but later removed on the finalized spec in production units, thus it is not available anymore.
The production units do not advertise about the haptic feedback feature.

Yup, 3K model is no longer available.

Well it seems like questions about golden keycaps are more interesting...

However I'm not ready to give in...

I tried to connect a DELL 300 Watt AC adpater and while it works perfectly fine and even seems to be a little more efficient the GT72 still switches to hybrid mode as aften as with the standard AC. Seems that unlike the DELL laptops the MSI GT72 is not able to detect the kind of power source (I saw my dell complaining about a low power AC adapter so I know this can be done).

I'd really like to get an official answer or maybe even a fix allowing actual 230 Watt power draw without switching to hybrid mode !

In addition to this there are the latest NV drivers disabling OC completetly for the GTX800M and GTX900M series.
I'd like to have an official statement from MSI on that, too.

All in all it seems like the GT72 is actually a step down from the MSI barebone based Erazer with GTX780M when it comes to OCing which I always considered part of the fun of owning a high end gaming LT.
