Are the Samsung SSDs you guys are talking about different than these at Newegg?
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820147399

-
Yes, different. That's the 850 EVO is M.2 SATAIII. The 850 Pro. is M.2 PCIe & NVMe and many times faster.
-
My bad. I linked the wrong one. I meant this one:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820147425 -
That's the SM951. It's an OEM drive and doesn't come with proper NVMe drivers. That model has been out for months now.
-
Is that what's in the currently shipping stock SKUs from MSI?
I'm starting to wonder if I should just hold off until Pascal ships as the "good" PCI-E drives and new vid cards will be out. -
The PCIe M.2 950 Pro. everyone is waiting for will come with proper NVMe drivers. I don't think drivers were ever an issue with Windows 10. Windows 8 was another story I believe.
-
Sorry should've mentioned ddr4.

I have been looking at 15" MSI laptops and the range is odd. The GS series has followed the trend of thinner laptops rather than using the space from smaller components and a non-required optical drive for cooling. That would be ok but the thicker and heavier GE range still has optical drives while machines still run hot. Are there any plans to drop the optical drive and just offer a better cooled 15" laptop?
The GE62 6QF Apache Pro is odd that it should be a much better core gaming choice than the thinner GS60 6QE but it oddly has stuff like an optical drive and a USB 2.0 port.
http://gaming.msi.com/products/notebook/ge-series?id=3541
I am assuming the graphics card is a GTX 970M (as shown if you click on specs) even though it randomly appears as a GTX 960M in the header details and linking page.
I read an interview with a MSI manager and even they seem confused as to what the GS and GE ranges are trying to be. That seems to show in the specs and general lack of clarity around cooling differences. Are there plans to offer a more optomal 15" gaming machine (probably in the GE series) ? -
Are there any plans to offer a GTX model without the dragon decal and red lid?
-
Hey, chch -
Have you seen anything showing the temps on those systems runing the Skylake i7-6700HQ and the GTX 970M?
I understand that the 6700HQ and the 970M run relatively cooler than earlier CPUs and GPUs. -

Both CPU & GPU should be about 85C upon loading. -
Is there any official release date for the Gen 6 GT80 versions such as the 001/002/013 model (980m SLI / 6820/6820hk/6920) which were stated late Oct or the GT80S (980 SLI / 6820hk)?

I'll predict Geno's response: It'll either be "No comment" or "Soon."
-
lol very possible, I did see a vendor post the week of the 19th and arrivals around the 21st on one of the websites so I thought it would be worth a shot as I am not understanding why the GT72 is receiving all the love and not the Bigger more powerful GT80.
-
My guess is the GT72 series is their main series and they sell the most of them. I'm think the Titan's more of a niche product that doesn't sell as much, so they're choosing to focus more on where they'll get the most sales. Get those bread and butter models churning out consistently and then more focus can be put on the niche products like the GT80 and GS30/40.
I'm guessing that the GT80 and GS30/40 are more higher profit/lower volume sales.hmscott likes this. -
Is that cooler than the previous model?
-
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
They are about the same in regards to temperature, but Skylake provides more overclockability than previous generations. -

Woo!
Is that just the 970M/980M versions or the 980 too? -
Hi,I have seen a BIOS update is available for my GT72 5Th generation I7, there is not a lot of description, just it's the 13th revision... Can a tech tell me if it's useful or I can pass on this one? Thanks

For anyone still wondering about the GS60 with UHD screen, I had the pleasure of seeing one (5th gen) in the flesh yesterday - so with this disclaimer, I don't have to wear glasses (yet) - I was actually quite impressed with how clear it is. I scaled it at 150% and for me the font was still very readable.
Now all I need is for Samsung to get their 1TB m.2 SSD's into production and I can upgrade!! That is providing that the new SSD's fit.

Hi, I have a MSI gt70. Whenever my battery is in the laptop my charger starts heating up to a ridiculous temperature. If i remove the battery and run the laptop with the charger plugged in - temperatures is normal. Why has this happened? Surely it must be my battery that has become faulty, but how and what could i do?
-
Support.1@XOTIC PC Company Representative
Does it heat up all the time with the battery in, even if you are using the system for light usage (browsing, email, video)? Does it heat up without the battery in there, even if you are doing something like gaming? It could be just because it is trying to charge the battery up at the same time while running the system. Also, has your battery life decreased in any way?
-
All the time - doesnt matter whether it is when gaming or just basic tasks. It does not heat up without the battery in there - it doesnt heat up a bit more when gaming (without the battery in) but just a fraction of what it does with the battery in. What i did forget to mention is indeed battery life - When battery meter suggests the battery is full, if i were to take it out it would only last 10-20 minutes at most - and then it just shuts down the computer, it doesnt gradually get noticeable lower (With a warning etc), to then shutdown into powersaving mode/hibernate or whatever , for the last 5%
-
Support.1@XOTIC PC Company Representative
If your batter is only lasting 10 to 20 minutes, then I would definitely look at replacing, at least for that reason alone. If you are within warranty, I would recommend looking in to getting that replaced, or maybe just buying a replacement for it.

Is there any word on whether the ODD and 2.5" bays have been bumped up in speed to 6Gbps for the GT80S?
-
Hello! I am going to be purchasing this laptop here in about a week:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00SVLJS7G/ref=ox_sc_act_image_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A2TC87EJKQMY9O
Now they don't have the actual model number listed but what I gather from the specs is that this is the MSI GE72 apache 23, But it could be one of the other 2 models of the 5th gen. GE72 Apache as listed on the msi website. So my question is what type of ssd's does this model take? I've watched some videos of the 2QE ,2QD etc but not this specific model. Those have 3 m.2 slots and I'm wondering if this has the same. This model is upgraded with a ssd already but I'd like to purchase another but not sure what kind it takes and haven't found a compatibility list anywhere. Thanks for any advice! -

Does anyone know what the actual status is of MSI GS40 6QE?
It was announced to available by MSI roughly October 20th, however no one seems to know anything regarding if and when it actually will be available.. -
Hi Geno
Could i ask a quick question pls as MSI support was a painful brush off, imho dell have far superior support (in my experience, so far....) yes i had an alienware 18 3D, r3 gtx 780m sli, awesome machine. Anyway, now im in a gt70 20c with gtx 770m.
What i need help with is, and tech support bailed out on me, is can i upgrade to gtx 870m? i know i can but what i mean more specifically is will i need a new psu/ drivers/ bios/ bigger fan or anything else that you could perhaps advise me on?
The shop i intend to buy this from say as there was less than a yesr between these gpu hitting the shops and therefore it should be a straight pnp. They say the bios and drivers etc should be just fine.m, although they said i should use the 870m heatsink.
Is this true?
Tyvm in advance
edit....
my machine is a late 2013 gt70, bios ver E1763IMS.50C, nvidia driver ver 358.91. -
You really should check http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/the-official-msi-gt60-70-970m-980m-upgrade-thread.765058/
I'd say 870M is not too brilliant upgrade as the difference is around 30% - 970M gives about 100% more than 770M. -

Hey Geno, i have a quick question regarding the availabity of the GS40 in the Middle east, specifically in Qatar, the resseller listed on the MSI site does not exist or the info is oudated, so if you could link me to a reseller or supplier here in Qatar it would be greatly appreciated, thanks mate

Hi, I'm trying to figure out the differences between these laptops that have pretty similar specs. I'm guessing the differences lie mostly in the screen, and maybe in the available slots.
1) MSI GE72 Apache Pro -001 ( here)
2) MSI GT72 Dominator G-1667 ( here)
3) MSI GT72 Dominator-019 ( here, note that the header on this page incorrectly lists it as a "GE72," but the Dominator name and the other model numbers match a GT72).
Obvious differences are: 1->128GB SSD, 2->256GB SSD, G-Sync (is this software only?), non-Skylake, 3-> no SSD. I see very little reason to get option 3 unless I'm losing an SSD and paying more in favour of a better screen (e.g., IPS). But they appear to have the same screen (just listed as FHD). So my main question is: what types of displays do each of these have?
Any help would be much appreciated!
e: As I dig more, it's definitely starting to look like the screen is the big factor for the Dominator series. So if that's the case, another question I have is the effectiveness of G-sync. I'm not a twitchy FPS player and have never really noticed much screen tearing in games that I play, so is it really worth paying $300 over the Apache or $100 over the other Dominator (assuming I buy an M.2 SSD) for G-sync and losing skylake just for G-sync? Or is there another plus to getting the G-sync version of the Dominator? Thanks again for any help!Last edited: Nov 14, 2015 -

GE is like value, and GT is premium.
Screen isn't the only difference, there are also memory and storage differences. -
Right, but the ones that I linked have identical memory and I already discussed the storage differences. In fact, the linked GE72 has better stock storage than the GT72 (non-G-sync version) since it comes with an M.2 SSD. Or do you mean the available slots for storage are different? I was thinking there may be more differences like cooling, ports, etc., but it didn't seem like it from the official spec lists.
-
The GT72 support massively improved cooling, as well as power supply that can support much more powerful hardware (like the new GTX980). Additionally, the chipset in some of the skylake versions do sport the capability for RAID between m.2 PCIe x4 speed, SSDs instead of m.2 Sata.
For the models you posted, I don't remember but it is also possible that the max ram of the GE series is 16GB vs 32GB of the GT series. Also I do think the GT series does have more storage ports, so you can have like 3/4 m.2 hdds plus a 2.5 one on the GT compared to GE series but I am not 100% sure, I might be confusing them with the GS series.
Yeah, screen might also be better right from the get go. -
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
If GE is enough for you then get GE, because it will be limited in some ways when compared to GT otherwise there is no such need for market segmentation by the manufacturer.
GE can never surpass the performance and quality from a GT. -
Hi !
is it possible to put a GTX 980 in place of GTX 980m?
are mainboards of GT72s 6QE and 6QF the same?
official msi guy promises that there will be an upgrade to mxm gpu in models with 980m
(at the end)
did he mean 980 (without m) or pascal? or is it not truth? -
Why does the Australian GE62 Apache only come with a GTX 950M?
-
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
Are you sure?
I saw some merchants from AU sells 970M version. -
The 970M is the Apache Pro and costs $2000+
-
MSI meant generation upgrades so it most likely meant pascal. GTX980 is not really a notebook standard product and only very few machines can run it, but it has modified specs, size, heatsink etc. Not sure if it will work or not, but I would wait instead for pascal which will be much better.
-
thanks
pascal will use MXM? -

So does or doesn't the GT80S come with metal key caps?
-
I do believe so. No reason it shouldn't yet.
-
The GT80S does not come with the metal keycaps anymore, unfortunately.
-
Why is it still listed under specifications, for the 2 GT80S models listed on the MSI USA site?
