Thanks! And I just saw that the MSI website has been updated to say that the GS40 Phantom supports Thunderbolt 3, so I guess the certification process is complete! Very exciting! I'm wondering, though: the MSI website also says that Thunberbolt 3 is "optional". Specifically:

"The latest and fastest interface Thunderbolt™ 3, supports up to 40Gbps data rate, supporting dual 4K displays with daisy chain capabilities. Support USB3.1 ultra speed devices, and up to 5V and 3A current output for charging. (Optional)" [source]

Can you clarify what the website means by "optional"? For instance, does it mean that only a certain hardware version of the GS40 will have Thunderbolt 3? Or do all GS40 laptops have a Thunderbolt 3 port, but the port can be fully used only after installing an optional software/bios/driver/etc. update? Thanks again so much for your help!

    Hello guys.
I want to buy a new laptop within the next few weeks. I wanted to know what's the exact difference between the
MSI GS60 GHOST PRO-002 and GE62 Apache Pro-001. There's around 200$ difference and they seem to have the same specs, I know that the GS series is slimmer and have better build quality, but is it worth the extra 200$? My initial budget for the laptop was 1500$, but if the GS60 was worth it.. I might be able to handle an extra 200$.

I would recommend you to visit the owner's thread for each model and read up the forum member's opinions on each laptop :) Feel free to ask specific questions, because GS60 vs GE62 at the same spec, might be reduced to preference or particular needs.

Nobody replied here and in the meantime I saw this review: ...
Finally I decided to buy it, GE72 Apache Pro, but I am really disappointed :(

I come from a 4.5 years old Dell, with a AUO panel that I absolutely love. In the review above, they mention the GE72 has a good LG IPS screen, but I got instead a Chi Mei TN panel (CMN1735) and I hate it. Colors look unnatural, especially skin tones, sort of lacking a proper red.
I tried every possible way to calibrate it and even tried some color profiles found online for the same panel. The result is still bad, even worse using online found profiles.
I installed the TrueColor software, but didn't help and I think some of the preloaded profiles it uses are completely useless if not horrible... I never change the profile on my Dell and I don't see any benefit in using the TrueColors one for the GE72.

If you have any idea for a fix, I still have about 2 days before I have to return it...
I mostly like the notebook except a few details (like the position of some keys one the keyboard...so uncomfortable!). However, I cannot spend 1200 USD for a machine with a screen I hate.

PS: I also found it very tiring to read from the screen, but that perhaps is because I was not yet used to it. What do you think?

Cheers and HAPPY NEW YEARS to you all!

@MSI Myco Can you comment at all on the new MSI GT72 with 4k and eye control via TOBII, the MSI GL72, GS72, WS72, and CX62 laptops that are inbound? Maybe a few details or picture? Thanks!

    Hi!

@MSI Myco -Techreport.com is saying there's an update to the GT70 Stealth line, the GT72 Stealth Pro, a 17.3" with a 4K Display. According to the article, these should be available 'fairly soon'. Is there any further information, such as release dates? I'd be very interested in both the specs of this machine, as well as any proposed release date, since I'll be in the market for a new laptop before 1 April.

Much obliged for any information anyone can provide. Thanks!

We don't know yet but apparently, 4K panels for 17.3 inch notebooks are in production, so we might see many more offerings with 4K displays.

GT72 is not new, indeed is a revamp of the older GT70 line, and I am sure it will get several 4K options with different models rather soon :)

Thanks for the interest in our CES announcements guys! I'm actually going to create an Official CES 2016 thread where I'll have updates and all things CES 2016.
I'll also try to answer as many questions or comments there as well!

Hi MSI Myco. I really hope you or anybody can help me I just purchased the MSI GT80S Titan SLI-072 18.4" Gaming Laptop with nVidia SLI GTX980 Desktop GPU 16GB GDDR56th Gen Intel Skylake i7-6920HQ 14nm i purchased it manly for the new VR compatibility Since you need desktop gpu"s. I ran the oculus compatibility test and it said my gpu was not compatible. but i have the desktop gtx 980 not the mobile counterpart, which is one of the requirements. all other components are compatible just not the gpu? i have all the requirements, but the test is some how not recognizing the gpu? I thought maybe i had to add some drivers to show compatibility, but no such luck. Now i have been posting on MSI and Oculus forums trying to get answers and it has been very conflicting I read everything from there is no laptop that will run VR to you can not fit desktop GPU"s into a laptop. and oculus does not support sli and that is why it will not work, which does not seem right because nvidia says they are supporting sli for vr. i mean that was my reasoning for getting the sli version to begin with, because instead having one card render both screens, two gpus render each screen "individually. At least that is what i researched. Maybe this laptop will only work for vive and not oculus. . I do not think nvidia would just support just one vr headset without specifying it. I need to know if i need to cancel my oculus pre order. i would appreciate anyones help on this matter. Thanks in advance.

Hi, I was looking at laptops in xotic pcs and noticed that the gs60 ''barebones'' is cheaper than the non barebones gs60, even with the same specs, whats the difference between this two? does msi recommend one over the other?

The GPU sounds dead bud my MSI MS-16F2 did the same thing when my GTX560M went. Not sure if that AMD GPU will work though.

Actually, it's better value if you buy the retail-ready full system instead of barebone.
The barebone does not have some of the features that you see on MSI-branded systems.
Unless, that is if you don't care about those features.

Barebone cannot have any advantage to use to compete against their fully-branded systems.
So, when it's not branded as MSI, you lose,
    1. Better appearance
    2. Better keyboard
    3. Better speakers
    4. Some software (such as Sound Blaster & Nahimic)
    5. SuperRAID
    6. Some other minor things

That all makes sense. I was mainly making a joke as barebones have always been the red-headed stepchild. But yeah, that's cool to know the specifics. No real reason to buy a barebone IMO.

You are better off asking nvidia and oculus rift dev team. Mobile GPUs are always different than desktop and while you have dual 980, they are not 100% the same in hardware ID so the software that checks compatibility might not be correct.

Obviously your performance is way beyond the recommended, so you should be able to use it. It's most likely software issues that will eventually get fixed.

I do believe oculus will eventually support both SLI and mobile GPUs properly but maybe at launch things will be different. SLI support for VR will be included as they develop it but it will all take time.

Keep in mind that with your current setup, you literally can't get anything better, mobilewise. You are at the top of the chain. You are even faster than most desktop computers built for gaming. If you somehow can't run oculus, no one can.

I would recommend being patient and then ask for support if you need it, to the corresponding developers.

Hi Ryzeki. Thanks for responding. This morning I contacted MSI customer support. I had to talk to their tech support and they were not sure, but seamed to think so(ya that did not give me the answer that i was looking for). I then emailed Oculus support to get there response but it will probably take a day or two to get a response. I am going to contact Nvidea next to get there take. I will post my finding here for anyone who is interested. do need to start a new thread to do that? I do not want get off topic. As to my question about will the gt80 run oculus. I just needed to know because i pre ordered it and i did not want to pay for something that was not going to work. I Hope you are right about the eventual support. i just wish Nvidea and Oculus would be more clear since these new laptops, and gpu that are supposedly supporting VR have started to come out. Thank you for taking the time to respond. wavelover.

Don't worry about it. It is good that you ask but I think MSI won't have an answer as they did not develop anything of the oculus themselves. Oculus and nvidia might have a better answer but to me it sounds like they just haven't had the time to test mobile GPUs. Even if your 980 is the "desktop" GPU, it is still a mobile only GPU that happens to have the same specs as a desktop variant.

I think they mentioned, but I am not sure, that a 980m might work. If this is the case, your 980 should work as it is faster. But I do believe SLI support is still not properly implemented. VR tech is literally new and untested in the market. If you venture right now you will be an early adopter that will get the benefit of trying it out first but with any issues it might come :)

I am sure all issues will be sorted in the coming months but for the time being, we don't have any "official' stance on oculus dev. If their recommended specs are true, then your 980 should work because it is at the very least, on par with a 970, slightly slower than a full desktop 980. So spec wise you should be ok in the requirements. It would be bad for them if they locked out particular GPUs just because they are mobile.

Hey. I own a GT72 and am looking at getting one of the Hermes backpacks, however the ones for the GT72 seem to be sold out everywhere in the UK. I can get the backpack for the GT80 however, so was wondering if anybody could tell me what the size difference between the two backpacks is. Will the GT80 backpack be too big for my GT72 to offer proper protection? Thanks in advance.

Best to check with your local MSI office since the backpack isn't always available and varies by region.

Hey, I recently purchased a GT72 ProDragon. Is there a chance that the keyboard will get SteelSeries Engine 3 support ? I have a SteelSeries mouse and have SSE 2 and 3 running at the same time.

For the most part, not branded products tend to miss things like Dynaudio sound, either soundblaster/nahimic, they have lower warranty period, in some models the used to have single color backlight instead of multicolor without support for steel series engine. Stuff like that. It is best to check with specific models to see if what you are missing is not important to you :)

It's most likely under maintenance or being changed. The same happened not long ago with a bunch of models of 4th gen haswell, when windows 10 came out. But now they are working with full support and drivers.

Give it some time. If you need any particular/specific driver, maybe you can contact MSI directly or your reseller in case you bought from one.

Thanks ryzeki. Strange, if it's under maintenance, other service pages should've gone down too. And if they're updating the page, it should be a simple task which doesn't take days. Normally i would just patiently wait, but i'm curious what going on with it.

Use 5th generation drivers, they should work almost the same as 4th.
Most of the time, the drivers are usually accumulative so they can support new and existing products with a few exceptions which depends by component manufacturers.
If you encounter driver not able to install then that's the one you can ask us and we will help you to locate the correct driver for that particular component.

Yeah the difference between what should be, and what we end up getting, greatly differs hahaha. Someone might have broken links, and they are just finding out. You should definitely send them an email or contact them so that they get working on it.

    This ^^^

When we had the same thing with the GT80 support groups months ago, MSI had fat fingered the configuration due to the work done when adding the new GT80S's, and MSI didn't notice it.

I waited 2 weeks for them to fix it on their own, after that I filed a service request against my registered GT80 Product entry, and they replied with the missing link and a promise to fix it.

It was fixed a few days later :)

No there was a error found in all Intel 6th gen Processors. They have fixed it but each vendor needs to do a bios update to get the new code in.

That's the latest, and I believe we were actually talking about two different issues related to the bug related to Skylake, so I've confirmation from MSI that they are actually working on another BIOS newer than 10C to resolve the issue.

What is MSI's stance on the fact that the GT80S 6QF drains battery power when plugged in at completely stock settings? Are you willing to release updated EC firmware to address this issue, or is your official position that the laptop is designed to operate at full power only for several hours at a time before being throttled to 100W per GPU?

That's the same design that MSI has used before. Instead of power throttling due to exceeding the PSU, it uses the battery. The same happens with my GT60 and GT80. We need to try the dual PSU to see if it works, otherwise yeah it would require an update to the EC firmware I believe, just like GT60 required it.

The PSU is only supplying 280-290W to the computer. That's a good 40-50W under what it's rated for.

Yeah I read on the thread. Gotta need to directly contact MSI regarding this. The odd thing is, I have actually killed off my PSU with overclocking, exceeding well over 400w, thus the PSU shutting down along with my whole computer. I will also inquire about the lock on the PSU to see what's causing it.

MSIGeno and Myco can at best redirect info, but they are here as community managers, so it's good to voice the concern but you also need to contact MSI directly to find out what's up.

As far as I know they never released any EC update to remove the 180w PSU limitation. I had a 240w PSU, and the laptop refused to use anything larger than the stock 180w and would drain the battery, and would drain more rapidly when overclocked.

@MSI Myco what the heck is up with MSI website lately? Would MSI please just pick a format and stick with it for more than a couple months? Seriously half the crap you have shoved onto every webpage is overload and doesn't even work. I try and look at what products you have and most of the links don't work or don't link me to anything even remotely associated with what I clicked. Was your website built by a high school after school workshop?

Hi Geno, one of the issues with the GS60 4K was the unnatural yellows on the display.

Does the GS72 4K have the same issue? Thanks.
