Lol... I wish it had a TURBO button like my old MSI GT60 and FAN ON button. That'd be nice while gaming.

Yes you can overclock it, but there's a default limit on how much you can achieve.
If you need more performance then you may need to have unlocked VBIOS and mix it with Intel XTU software.

I see. I'm having trouble playing just Dota 2, I get lags/spikes. I did some research and it maybe due to wireless so I'm not sure. I did update the killer 1525 driver but still having the same issue so I wonder if it's because of the graphic card.

Wifi has nothing to do with overclocking.
Did you update the driver to the latest version by download it from Killer's website?

I did download the driver but didn't get a chance to figure out how to use it. There were so many folders etc, didn't know which one's which.

I don't know if this is the proper forum to ask for a specific MSI model but will there be an official release of an MSI GT62 series soon? Thanks for those who will answer my question.

If you are looking for a price on something, you would generally want to send a message to a company rep directly. They should be able to let you know if they can get one and price that way.

New SLI HB cable for notebooks when using GTX1080M SLI? Can't wait to see the new GT80. That keyboard is something that really makes the laptop separate from any other.

Most likely it will be the same. But it really doesn't matter because if MSI selling the upgrade kit they will include the cable and heatsink.

So do any newer models have a TB3 port? If they do which models?
Just looking into getting a new laptop that can use a eGPU set up like the Razer Core.
    Thanks.

I think most of the newer MSI machines do have TB3 enabled with the super port. Maybe someone else can confirm.

    Hey ryzeki.
Is it a true TB3 port that would enabled full compatiblity( speed wise ?)
I know there has to be some BIOS/software update to get a egpu working and who knows if they will actually release one at all that works and is compatible with all MSI laptops beside the GS40 but the new pascal desktop GPU's has got me thinking it would be a pretty sweet setup.

I will check the TB3 speed from the super port but It should be compatible like a normal thunderbolt 3 port. Since the new eGPU solutions are still just that, new, I believe there might be some hurdles to attend, but in theory, it should work on most devices. As you mention, there needs to be some update to enable something, which I don't know, but the idea is to keep it "generic" so that you are not dependent of a specific platform.

Personally, I think we will have a much better view of the situation until next year, once competitors release their eGPU solutions and it becomes a bit more widespread.

As far as I know only the gt80s 980 sli 2048 Cuda core edition has a limit. The older models don't.

FYI my alienware 18 turned off playing gta v with prema bios, no voltage change w/ overclock. Maxwell is too power-hungry.

I've resorted to massively undervolting my cpu to .96v.

    Sad, isn't it?

Trust me, most users don't even know their CPU is power limited and actually hinders performance after turbo window ends, and they still buy said machines.

The power issue allows up to 6 hours on the GT80S before battery drops too much. I am sure 1080m will consume less power than desktop 980 so it should be fine though. Similar to 980m.

I agree with you there but to have a power limit of 300w on a 330w adapter :/ They need to remove that limitation. But also me having to spend another $1200+ just to get the performance boost I should get from this system is not right. I do know that this system is still the best as far as performance goes but I should have been so much better.

Can either the GS72 or WS72 notebooks be downgraded to Windows 7?

If so, are there any known issues? Loss of functionality? Is it officially supported?

A lot of people assume that since the new Nvidia Pascal chip is more power efficient it's going to draw less power, but that power efficiency is being used to get better performance, not draw less power :)

At stock speeds Nvidia says the 1080 spec power draw is 180w, that's 15w higher than the 980 165w spec.

Both draw far more power at OC speeds, and Nvidia are making some of their performance demos at 2144mhz, up from 1700mhz, which means the power draw is well above 180w.

So, if you want high performance, it looks like the 1080 desktop in a laptop is going to need more power than the 980 mobile desktop GPU, not less.

The same relative increased need for power will translate to the 1080m as well, more power, higher TDP, for more performance. Not less power.

At best both the 1080 and 1080m will have the same power requirements as the 980 and 980m, but to reach the new performance heights the Pascal chipset allows, the 1080/1080m are both going to need to be given more power, not less.

With Pascal the GT80S needs higher power PSU support even more than before, power requirements haven't gone down, they have gone up. :)

I know 1080 draws more power than 980, but i never assumed 1080m would be a full 1080. At best we will have a slightly cut 1070 which already consumes 150w, or so they claim.

I am expecting a 980m power envelope with 30%+ more performance in average, way more in VR, at stock.

Basically, it should be a slightly faster 980 without the power hurdle. And more VR performance.

    Hello,
I have a WS72-6QJ-008US and every once in a while I check the MSI site for new drivers. About a month ago the message below appeared under the Realtek/Nahimic sound drivers post:

"Nahimic End of Support on MSI Workstation Series Noteboooks
The Nahimic software support on MSI Workstataion Series notebooks will end after May 1, 2016. The last version remain valid with the limitation of discontinued new versions release.
MSI no longer provides updates and technical support for Nahimic software on all Workstation Series Notebooks."

Does any one know whats going on with MSI & Nahimic?
I have searched for more details but have only found a few negative remarks about Nahimic. I'm not crazy over Nahimic, actually uninstalled it and only run the current Realtek drivers: v7818 (from Realtek ftp site).

The only issue I have with this laptop is poor Sound Quality, although the current Realtek drivers did help a bit. It would be nice to have a little more control than just a "Volume" slider. I have never been able to get the old "Realtek HD Audio Manager" to appear. Not sure if it's MSI, Realtek, Nahimic or Windows 10?
    Thanks

That's weird, the message is only there for Nahimic driver downloads for MSI Workstation laptops, for the GT80 there is no such notice.
    https://us.msi.com/Laptop/support/GT80-Titan-SLI-GTX-980M-SLI-5.html#down-driver&Win10 64

There is also a new Nahimic driver package dated 5/5/18, which is after the 5/1/16 cut-off. You could try it...note this URL is the GT80 5th gen support area, as the GT80S 6th gen support area only has a HelpDesk app - no drivers.

    https://us.msi.com/Workstation/support/WS72-Workstation-6th-Gen.html#down-driver&Win10 64

Well, it would be nice to know something about the cooling, if there are issues or not, since the laptop packs a 970m and the chasis is rather thin...

Also, how the 4K screen performs. If there are any scalong issues or not, sibce I've seen several machines with such panels and they have problems with scaling.
I would be using it for gaming, so scaling issues or overheating while gaming are important factors. Bot to mention, that it would be my primary machine.

This would be a good start :)

    Hi,

    I have a GT72 2QD Dominator. With GTX 970m and the G-Sync enabled screen.

I know that the GPU can be upgraded to the GTX 980m, has anyone done that? How difficult is the process?

Also, is it possible to upgrade the screen to a 3K or a 4K display by any chance?

    Warm Regards
    Andrew

I think the upgrade of a 980m is more than possible, since the GT series MSi machines do use the standard MXM slot for the gpu connection with the motherboard. The process shouldn't be hard to deal with, just make sure you are grounded to avoid any unwanted static discharges on your components.

The inly thing I may not know, is wether you have to tweak smth in your BIOS before making the gpu upgrade...

Well the videos I've seen make it look pretty simple, and none have mentioned any bios tweaks,

I did get an interesting reply in the other thread, that I should probably hold off for the new 1080/1070 cards.

Is there any info about whether their mobile counterparts will use the MXM slot?

The 980m/970m upgrade kits from MSI are for the previous generation models that didn't have G-sync displays built in.

The product page for the upgrade says nothing about G-sync:
    https://www.msi.com/Laptop/GT72-MXM-Graphics-Upgrade-kit.html#hero-overview

You need a G-sync enabled GPU to go with your G-sync enabled internal display for G-sync to work.

There are Custom vBIOS makers that offer G-sync / non-Gsync vbios's, but the GPU hardware needs to support it, you can't flash a G-sync vbios onto a a non-G-sync 980m and have it work.

MSI say they will have upgrade kits for Pascal GPU's for GT72/GT72S/GT80/GT80S/etc(?), and many of those models had G-sync so any upgrades will also need to offer G-sync.

You might need to wait until the Pascal MXM GPU upgrades are available if you want to have G-sync.

The 3k/4k displays often have different connectors and form factors that likely won't be compatible or fit your lid. If you can find the right physical fit, or do a lid transplant, you might get it to work.

Not sure, but I think it is more a speculation, than the real truth, since there is 0 info on the mobile series on the internet atm... From my personal oppinion, I think it might use the same connector, since the 700m series gpu's used the same MXM module and ir continues all the way till 980m... It would be quite unprofitable I think to switch to another different connector, since a lot of people would bot be able to upgrade their gpu's in their older setups... Which would result in profit loss for Nvidia

Ok so it WILL be possible to upgrade my laptop to the new Pascal GPUs? I mean if thats true, I'd rather just wait for that then!

Will my processor be an issue though (bottleneck, maybe?)

Pascal mobile hasn't been announced, so you won't be able to get upgrade product details or price, but you might ask MSI support (open a ticket on their support site) for your laptop - you did register it, right? - and ask if your model has support for a Pascal GPU upgrade.

They should be able to tell you "generically" if it will be available at some point.

As long as you have a 4 core 8 thread Haswell, Broadwell, Skylake CPU you should be ok.

Would it be better with a faster CPU? Maybe, maybe not, it depends on the game.

You could also tune your CPU for more speed by OC'ing and undervolting to improve performance and reduce heat. Something to check out while you are waiting :)

It's not tough, you won't be at risk of messing things up if you stick to the stock BIOS/vbios, and even if you don't you'd need to work hard to mess it up.

This isn't the right thread to answer this fully, go to one of the GT72 threads, and search and read, there are lots of posts on OC'ing, all over.

Briefly. Get MSI Afterburner + Rivertuner for GPU tuning. Get Intel Extreme Tuning Utility (XTU) or ThrottleStop for CPU. There are other tools, but those are good enough.

CPU should OC at stock voltage a couple of multipliers higher. I haven't OC'd the 5700, but the 5950HQ was stable at 4.1ghz, but I usually ran it at 4.0ghz.

Just set all the multipliers for all 4 cores up 1x at a time. Save it and try it. Keep going till you crash, then reboot and use the setting just before the one that crashes.

You can undervolt too, both CPU and cache, start at -20mV, and you might be able to go as high as -100mV or higher. I had one 4700HQ that would undervolt stable at OC at -125mV.

GPU is easier. You should be able to OC GPU core to +135, and likely up to +400 for memory. Start low and work up in OC, do GPU core first with memory at stock, then OC GPU memory with GPU core at stock. Then try both at the same time :)

Take notes, save often, drop back to stock profile/settings when you need to get real work done - don't risk homework / work on OC settings under test.

chkdsk your C drive often, after every crash for me.

    Have fun :)

    @MSIGeno

Any news to retail launch an MSi MS 16L1?

The barebone model is already adopted by a few resellers.

How common is backlight bleed on your GT 80 Titan SLI? Had mine replaced 4 times now incompetently by MSI repairs. What's the deal here?

Please post photo's of the 4 screen bleeds, so we know what level of bleed through you have.

MSI $4,000 magic: bleeding on the bottom left (not as noticeable) as the faint bleeding on the top left...

As we are discussing in the GT80 thread, yes that's normal, and about how mine looked.

I would suggest running the brightness down around 70% as that screen is pretty bright. You can run at 100% but it tired out my eye's quicker than running at 70%.

Check the glow/bleed again at 70% brightness :)

What did the other 3 screens look like, about the same, worse, better?

    GS60 Ghostpro-064 15.6" GTX970M 6G, ssd RAID 0+ ssd, win7 pro

Greetings, I got my pc last year and just now have had time to get it going.

** I'm getting horizontal flickering lines and black/white flashing randomly on the screen. It does it significantly more on the internet than stand alone, although it still flashes somewhat.

It's not real bad, but for a $2500 laptop? Will video driver and/or bios fix it? (bought about 1 year ago to date just as new product came out)

Is this flickering and flashing just part of GTX970M video card's characteristics??? It's always done it out of the box.

    Thanks
