HI guys,
I had changed my gt60 2oc boot drive to a 120gb samsung evo ssd along with the stock 1tb hdd as a data drive (I place all my games on this drive). The system runs great but when I try to play games like League of Legends (off the hdd) I get random 2-5 second freezes accompanied with the clicking/whirring up of the hdd. LoL used to run without freezes/lockups when the hdd was my boot drive. Can someone help? Thanks.
P.S. I already tried reinstalling the game and wiping the OS. -
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
You can call MSI directly to purchase one from them.
Check for firmware update for your Samsung SSD. -
I already updated to latest firmware.

Is the game on the HDD or the SSD?
-
It's on the HDD
-
If it's like my HDD, the problem is there is "Advanced Power Management" built into the drive and it spins down after 60 seconds or so of no use. So if a game doesn't use the HDD for a bit but then later needs to use it , it has to spin up again which takes a few seconds.
To stop it, get a program called CrystalDiskInfo, go Function -> Advanced Feature -> AAM/APM Control -> Select the HDD -> Disable APM. (Or you can just move the slider close to the performance side and press Enable)
It'll be back on after a shutdown (and sleeping too I think), so if you want to automatically be disabled you can also go Function -> Advanced Feature -> Auto AAM/APM Adaption and Function -> Startup. -
Hello guys,
I am new in the forum and the topic I just bought a GT60 2OC without a windows. The only problem is that, when I set the bios to UEFI or UEFI CSM, the bios does not detect my hard drive in the meaning that in legacy the Hard Drive is detect in the boot options and not in UEFI.
I can install windows 8 while running the DVD, but once the installation restarts to set the presets of windows, the pc can't boot on the drive because the UEFI does not detect it. When I set the bios to Legacy and I ran windows 8 DVD it says that my drive is in GPT and could not install on a GPT drive.
Please Help me if you can I am lost. The drive is detect in the System Section it s the boot section where it dissapears when set to UEFI.
THanks a lot. -
I just applied those settings and will test it out for a couple days. It seems to be working for now. Thanks for the help.

Then your HDD is going to sleep to save power and starting the game is waking the HDD but that takes a few moments. You can set the hdd to stay on all the time but it will waste power. -
No clue guys?
-
You'll have to convert your HDD to GPT - read a wiki on UEFI and GPT partitioning, it's the new standard anyway so if you still have old MBR HDDs they will have to be converted as well sooner or later.
Also read my earlier post about the possible issues you can run into: http://forum.notebookreview.com/msi...0-2oc-770m-owner-s-lounge-20.html#post9381337 -
I did visa versa as my GPT HD corrupted on the first day before doing backups and it was impossible to fix. I ditched UEFI and GPT and installed legacy mode Windows 8 - at least I can fix it if it corrupts. But might change my mind if they do over 2 TB SSD disks...

Hey guys,
We got a puppy lately, and found out recently that she bit into one of our charger cables (the bit between the charger and the laptop).
It's a bit smokey, you can see sparks, and it's very concerning.
Would wrapping some non-conductive tape around it be a solution, or should I just replace it with a new one.
Also, where can I get a new one.
Thanks
-
if it's "sparking" you need to properly separate the wires so I suggest cutting it open from both ends of the bitten cable and correctly attach them and then separate them with non-conductive tape. The important part being separated wires haha. Worst case yeah you can buy a new one and MSI has been using the same model for a while. Contact some resellers in the forum and they will most likely sell you an original replacement. Some users sell them too, through here

I actually found out recently that my step dad can fix it lol. I'm just gonna throw some electric tap around the affected area and get him to fix it up.
Thanks so much for the advice
Another, far more off topic question:
Upgrading the 770m to a 870m or 880m (or even 970m/980m).
Possible? What needs to be done? -
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
Yes, since it's interchangeable but it's difficult to obtain a VGA MXM card.
The other thing you needed to be concerned of is the heatsink as the contact surface may be different due to placement of electronic components. -
I knew sticking with just building desktops was a better idea.
-
Actually it began to freeze again for around 2 seconds at a time. I reinstalled the latest killer network drivers, made sure the crystal disk settings were correct and turned off power management in irst for my hdd but it still freezes. Any help is appreciated.

Try uninstalling IRST totally to see if that helps. I had an OCZ Vertex 3 that would freeze for a couple seconds at a time and that did the trick for me. -
Ok i just tried that and will see how it performs. Thanks
-
What is the problem? HDD freezing? or is it an SSD?
In my GT60, the laptop would freeze ocasionally due to the HDD entering deep sleep mode, and after waking up, usually a second or two, it would unfreeze and be responsive again. I noticed it doesn't happen when I keep it active, like when running HWmonitor on the background.
A while ago, I thin Ken from Gentech reposted his findings about it and there is a tool to disable the deep sleep. Supposedly it is there to ensure a longer lasting life as well as lower power consumption but it ends up causing the freezing. This happens to a lot of notebooks apparently.
Usually SSD's don't have this issue though. Usually. -
Actually now i'm thinking it may be my wifi because for the last couple of hours i've been getting freezes and random disconnects in LoL. (btw LoL is installed on my 1tb WD secondary hdd)
-
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
Have you tried the driver only solution yet?
https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=174228.0 -
So should I uninstall my current Qualcomm Atheros Perf. Suite, then install this?
And how do I even install this? -
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
Okay, get the zip file on your desktop first, unzip it into a folder on the desktop.
Then remove the entire Qualcomm Atheros Perf. Suite, reboot.
Go to device manager, you should see Network & Ethernet controller devices, double-click on each one of them, then driver tab, and update driver by browsing directly to the folder that stores the files from first step. -
Actually I tried messing with some settings on my router this morning and after turning things off like intellistream I haven't been getting any disconnects, and every time I disable apm the freezes go away. So, I think the problem is solved. Ill keep these settings for a while and see if the problem comes back. Thanks so much to everyone that helped.

Interesting to know about it, but glad it's working fine for you now. -
Good thing it was fixed
In my case I only permanently run HWmonitor hahaha

Hmm..I need help
This is scary, the lights on my keyboard stops working. Not really sure what caused it, but I was just doing stuffs on Photoshop when I accidentaly press "Ctrl S" which makes my PS lags for a sec because of how heavy the file is, I somehow did a random keyboard press which has "Ctrl, Alt" button and some number or even function keys with it, then the light just went off. I already restarted my pc and still no keyboard lights, not even the default white lights. I'm thinking if theres a shortcut button that I really hope I just triggered it and can be turn on again. Just like how the wifi has no logo on F8 button but still function as a shortcut for turning it on and off. Hopefully this can be fixed without replacing the keyboard

Try changing the settings through the MSI control software or FN + (+/- on the num pad) to control brightness.
-
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
Try pressing the LED on/off button. It's the one on the left of power button.
If the symptom persists, then do a EC reset by disconnecting the AC adapter and battery for 10 seconds then reconnect them. Power on the system and verify the issue again. -
Hello - I have a GT70 20C-017US running Win 8.1 Pro, completely stock and 9 months old. Used for graphics intensive 3D engineering software, not gaming. Notebook is usually plugged in with battery installed and power setting max performance. Notebook has been OK until recently - the issue is problem with start up - seems to occur at random. Sometimes when I press the power button it turns white, but turns off again within 1-2 seconds with an audible click. Sometimes it turns from white to orange, fans start etc. and then it turns off. Sometimes I get to the sign-in screen, or get to password entry and then it clicks off. I basically have to keep trying until it eventually starts completely. I have tried removing the battery and starting on AC power only - it works sometimes and not other times. I have tried with battery only (battery status is 98% available) - same story. AC charger is delivering correct voltage - checked with multimeter. One thing I noticed is that if notebook has failed to start (i.e. power button light has clicked off) it will often click on again when I unplug the AC power, only to click off again seconds later.
I have also had random instances where notebook clicks off with no warning, after normal start and several hours work - doesn't appear to be temp related, fans not running etc. I would really appreciate any suggestions to track this down - notebook is important to business and needs to be reliable. I have seen references to similar problems in various forums but no definitive resolution. I would really not like to have to go the RMA route and I need the unit daily. Thanks in advance for any comments.suggestions -

The click could be the hard drive parking. It sounds like a short or bad connection. Clean out the system with compressed air and see if anything is loose. If not then send it in for repair.

Those are kinda high for CPU temps. While video encoding is pretty CPU intensive you still want to see lower temps. As you mentioned consider repasting and also cleaning out the fans and vents. -
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
Can you show the GPU temperature too?
Some video editing software allows you to take advantage of GPU as well, perhaps it is the reason why the CPU is heating up. -

Although the GTs tend towards the warm side, that is pushing it. Definitely check the paste and for any obstructions (dust, animal hair, etc.). Make sure the heat pipe doesn't have any damage to it either. -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Fully pushed 90C is still below the throttle point (though XTU would tell you for sure if it is or not), you could try a repaste and repad if you want to help bring it down.
-
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
If you are very concerned of temperature, just add a laptop cooler underneath it, it will definitely help.

I have a GT70 2OD with basic 770m, 1TB HDD core i7 4700mq, I installed 128gb samsung pro. I was wondering has any one tried to upgrade there GPU to 780m?
-
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
You can upgrade to 780M, 870M, and 880M. Any of these will work in this system without issues. -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
You will need a new heatsink, any GK104 (680M, 780M, 880M along with a couple of others) will match.
-
Has any one tried installing the 780M or 880M? Will i need to flash my bios? If I had to pick btw the 780M or 880M i would obviouly pick the 880M which is faster but has any one tried it yet? come on guys lets keep this thread going, if you done any update 780M or 880M? please lets us know?
-
Considering the D version has the 780m GPU, that would be the safest choice. 880m is an overclocked 780m, so most likely 780m is the cheaper choice and since you can overclock, you can have 880m speeds at less cost $$.
I don't think you need to flash bios. -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
I would pick the 780M if I had the choice as a general user.

Hi guys I ran into a huge problem again.
First I factory reset my laptop using burn recovery. Then I began to run windows update on my factory reset laptop. Windows update downloaded and installed 101 updates then asked me to restart my pc. So i did. Then it began configuring and failed at 98 percent. Then i got stuck in a bootloop. The screent kept saying "failure to configure windows update ..." so eventually I turned the laptop off with hopes that I might be able to access system recovery and restore. So i plugged in my burn recovery drive and tried to access it via advanced startup (by pressing f11) but the pc froze at the msi boot screen with the small underscore symbol. After several more failed attempts I tried to access bios and succeeded but when I went into boot options the screen was all glitchy (blank lines with empty perenthesis) so I restarted but the same thing as advanced startup occured. Eventually whenever I pressed f11 or delete the underscore wouldnt even show up (bios isnt responding or is corrupted?). And the msi screen wont even show the loading symbol (the spinning dots) to show the os is loading. This is freaky.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
I already sent a support ticket to msi.
Oh also I pierced the warranty void if removed sticker on the bottom of the laptop when putting in an ssd. I believe that someone said it doesnt matter. But im still not sure if it matters. -
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
I dislike doing the Windows Updates because sometimes things can happen unexpectedly.
Try doing the recovery one more time and see if you can get the unit up and running again.
Warranty isn't void if the sticker is tempered, however there shouldn't be any kind of damages internally otherwise the warranty can still be void by MSI. -
I tried f3 recovery, burn recovery, and shift f8, but none work so I think im just going to send it in. Thanks.

Ok, gotcha.
