I was definitely going to make my restore DVDs and keep he HDD if anything else, but if it won't make a fair difference, I can just save up for a couple large capacity SSD drives or a 2.5" SSD later on, for both speed and battery life.
-
The performance between 7200rpm and 5400rpm is minimal. Go for a SSD if you can afford it, otherwise the 5400rpm is fine. -

Unfortunately the power supply I have from alienware does not match at the connector. The power is the same 19.5, only the amps are a bit higher. Still if the connectors were the same, I would have tried. Sorry guys, unfortunately there is no go from my side and I do not have any spare adapter lying around...
-
All this talk about everyone's units de-clocking when trying to over clock has got me thinking, no one seems to be having extreme temperatures on their cpu/gpu so there's no way any one is hitting any thermal thresholds, so its got to be a power supply issue. Does anyone know what are the thermal thresholds for the haswell 4700qm and gtx 780m?
-
Also I am able to keep my unit overclocked so far, I haven't noticed declocking, when using NOS. -
-
-
I use GPU Shark for the GPU. It is very lightweight.
-
hello everyone,
ive been a clevo user for many years and maybe i want to try msi and the gt60 for my next purchase. but i do have some questions that some of you might be able to help with. im planning to get the basic haswell with the 780m
1. is the single gpu/cpu fan robust enough to cool the system at stock? with an o/c?
2. is there a psu larger than 180w that i can purchase?
3. is gpu constantly upgradeable (as long as its same mxm slot) and not limited by bios locks and what not?
tia -
It may sound a bit 'nasty' but even I and others on this thread took the time to read every little note and idea each one has put into it to the best of their knowledge. If you had the time and read everything, definitely you would not have asked all those questions... So let me make it easier for you:
Question 1.A. - Yes;
Question 1.B. - Maybe to some limit;
Question 2. - No, nobody has come to know that so far (I was going to try today with an alienware PSU, unfortunately does not fit the connector);
Question 3. - Maybe (it all depends if MSI or anyone else will be able to have the bios support the 'new' technology that may come in the future; According to my believe, if MSI sticks to NVidia GPU's I see no reason why not to be supported, unless there will be graphic cards that need more voltage then the one we get today and that's where the entire system will have to change all together. -
Hey guys, I was taking oof the back panel of my gt60 and I noticed that one screw is longer than all the others. Unfortunately, I forgot where it came from. Anybody know where it goes?
-
Keyboard symbol. I believe the one that had the warranty sticker covering it. They used to use 2 long screws for the keyboard symbol spots on my GX660. Not sure what exactly changed that they are now only using one.
-
Got mine in earlier today. Tossed in my extra 500gb hdd I had laying around. I have installed some games to the msata drive. Windows index is 7.2 with the slowest components being the processor and the GPU. The others scored 8.1. That was a shocker to me lol.
Fan is quiet. Haven't had a chance to test the temps. I turned turbo fan on to see how loud it was and they are right about it being loud. I play MMOs mostly so turbo fan won't be needed usually.
Can anyone recommend a good bluray/DVD program free or a decent paid one. I don't plan on watching movies much but when I do, I'd like the option to have the codecs. Thanks. -
Congrats Acapella75!
Did you get W7 with it? -
-
Thanks guys. I just guessed and I got it right!
-
Congrats on the new laptop, can you record a video of the fan noise on max if possible? Or can anyone for that matter? -
originally ordered the barebones GT60 780m model. but i decided to go all out and changed my order with xotic pc to the MSI GT60 2OD-026US.
now the painful part:
waiting for the laptop to arrive.... -
Auhm. This might be an insanely stupid question, but I don't have a sticker anywhere on the back of my laptop. Given how much fuss I've seen about the laptop's sticker, am I supposed to have one on the outside or is it on the inside (haven't gotten around to opening it up yet :v)
-
It's supposed to be outside covering one of the screw holes. It doesn't matter really
-
Which is more beneficial, overclocking the core or the memory?

Hello guys,
I just got mine a few days ago but haven't really got time to run the beast.
First of all, do you know how I can try to "gain" a little bit of space on my 128go SSD? Yesterday, I noticed that on 128go, only 99go were available. I just installed COH2 and I only had 25 go left :/
Then, how do you actually burn the recovery discs ? I launched MSI recovery burner I don't know what and somehow, it doesn't really tell me how to burn them.
Finally, about my T°C : the lowest IDLE I could have yesterday while googling&stuff was 45°C and ths highest : around 61°C. 61 is a little too much right ?
Thanks mate for the responses. -
Regarding RAM yes it's placed under the keyboard. MSI did this to allow better upgradeability in the future for the end user. I saw that with the GT780DX too.
Once you complete the online form refer to the address they give you there
Regarding COH2 check if the game's setup files got decompressed on the temp folder and clean them up with CCleaner.
I haven't burned the recovery disc too so can't help you with thatI usually go by fresh-installing an OS
Good temps. I idle around 40-41 and get around 58-60 during youtube playback.
They are normal temps for these machines -
Hi new here. I bought one of these from GenTechPC and I have to say I'm concerned about my temps. For example unless I run turbo fan while I play BF3 my temps rise to over 90c. I don't allow it to rise higher than this and then I put the turbo fan on. My ambient temp is 70f. I supposedly had IC Diamond installed for free. Are these temps too high?
-
Hey felix,
Thanks a lot mate for your pro activeness on the forum
That's cool especially because I'm from Europe and guess you guys might be sleeping at this time
(10:48 am over here)...
To re-center the topic, week end is coming, and I'm considering repasting with MX4! I've been looking for IC Diamond but couldn't find any. Too hard to find some nowadays... I have 2 tubes of AS5 (never used) but will give a try to MX4.
Another thing, are you guys using some notepad cooler ? I bought the Cooler Master Notepal U3, but am still waiting for it to be delivered.
I will try to give you the T° while using it... -
So I was playing WoW with turbo fan off and my CPU temps were 50-52 and the GPU was 65-69. Only occasionally did the fan spin up to be audible. Gonna test FFXIV tomorrow.
-
Or the MSI recovery dvds already have a "clean" win8 without any drivers ? Thx -
Basically, NOS is giving more juice in order to fulfill power requierements. Ok so this is fine BUT : you have to plug your battery and the AC adapter : won't it fuc** your battery up ??
I've always been told to remove the battery while playing (and when the AC adapter is connected) because loading a battery which is already load at 100% will make it last shorter...
Thx -

Try a new 2013 game with AA on and 1080p and see how it is.
-
No problem. Glad to help here
I'm from Italy (so Europe too) There's a shop here in Italy which sells IC Diamond 7. I don't know if they ship internationally. I can check with them in case and let you know
Also I've personally tried the Prolimatech PK-3 thermal paste and it works wonderfully. I used it on the 7970m. Very nice temps: 35 idle and max 75 full load.
I'm not using any notepad cooler. I just game with turbofan on because usually I wear headphones (the ones on my sig) and they isolate outside noise quite nicely.
Let us know how it works out with the U3 -
Thx -
^^^ Unfortunately not. I think someone on this forum has posted a link to a copy of windows 8. And you do not have to install any key since it is already saved in your bios. At the end, once windows is installed, when you connect to the internet, automatically will get activated. I think even if you google it around you will be able to get a copy if windows 8.
Keep in mind that you lose all the software that comes with this system (I am talking about 'media' software) and MSI does not provide that software to download it. It comes pre-installed in your system. You are better in using the backup disks and remove what you do not want... I hope this clears your doubts. -
NOS uses battery when it needs to pull more power than what the AC adapter can give it. Usually, this is when you overclock. -
One more thing for me : I opened today my beast, but one thing is really sad about the material of this laptop : do you guys also have a few plastic "pins" all around the side of the back cover when you open the laptop, that broke during the opening ? I know it's not quite important but when you bought it >2000$, that's quite annoying.
I have 3 of them that are completely loose (I did really pay attention when I opened it).
:/ -
No, not really. I have opened it atleast 10 times and nothing happened (Use a good super glue to affix them back). Though, it should not break so easily... Unfortunately to replace it, it may cost you $40-$50.
The only thing I was really upset about with this machine was the fan. Was making a big racket (noise) even when hardly used. It was a cheap manufacturer who made that fan (NSTECH).
If any of you have the same problem and you want to replace it, PM me and I will give you the details of the right person / reliable, who can supply one for you at a reasonable cost. I had to order one and had it replaced with the T&T one and its so quite now, you cannot even make out that the system is switched on... -
And to the above poster, make sure you're more careful. I have broken those plastin pins the in the past. The bottom panel can be replaced and found easily, but as Juliant said it will cost $40-50. Not really that important to replace though. As long as the bottom panel is secured with the screws. I would say my biggest gripe about the MSI chassis is that plastic bottom.
I downloaded EVGA Precision X today to try it for overclocking. It also only allows for +135 on core. It had a interesting Target Temperatue feature that I haven't seen in Afterburner. It allowed me to set the Max temp I wanted the GPU to hit. I tested 80C without turbo cooler, and it actually worked. The GPU maintained 80C, but on a hot day like today started to downclock itself, instead of ramping up the fan speeds to maintain that temp. I was hoping for it to ramp the fans, but o well. I only used it for about 30 min. -
Since I live in France, do you know on which website I can find another brand new "black plastic plate" ?
I'm going to contact MSI to know if they can replace it for free for me :/
I know it's nothing but a bit annoying for a brand new beast :/ -

I'm really excited about getting this seemingly awesome GT60-2OD laptop. I'll be heading to college soon and I think it will be a great fit. The fact that I can get almost the performance of my current desktop is amazing. I have been really interested in this forum, as I have read most of these 80 pages, but I don't recall seeing the answer to a question of mine: Will buying a customized version on GenTechPC or XoticPC affect my warranty? I see a 2 year warrant on GenTechPC (probably on XoticPC also; I haven't checked though) but it was stated on this forum that you want to keep the SSD and HDD that came with the laptop for warranty purposes. The problem is I will be purchasing an SSD as my only drive (hopefully the 512G 840 Pro). I'm guessing that whatever you register to MSI with is what you need to have later on for the warranty. I just wanted to make sure.
Also, do you prefer XoticPC or GenTechPC? Any personal experiences buying from both would be well appreciated.
Finally, looking on GenTechPC I see the Intel Wireless-AC 7260 is not much more expensive then the default Killer Wireless-N adapter. It was stated by juliant that killer cards are known to be problematic (Is there evidence to this?) and Wireless-AC will definitely be safer for the future as it may become the standard, correct?
Thanks in advance! -

Sorry for posting it in 2 differents topics, just want to be assure to get an answer
> About the fan noise while webpaging, youtube and googling : do you have this low high-pitched sound coming from the fan ? It sounds like the sound of the system of bearing of the marbles.
It only happens when the T° go up to around 50°C and 60°C.
Here is a sample : just play it on soundcloud : I recorded with my iphone. The air blow seems quite high because I was very closed to the chassis holes. The blow is acceptable 1-2m away... but the high pitched sound is very annoying, I can hear it clearly from my desk which is 3-4m away :

Should I ask for a replacement ? -
-
Hey Couldpm, my fan sounded EXACTLY like that, drove me nuts. I'm still waiting for my replacement from Newegg whom I will never purchase from again. They said there's a chance I may even get the same laptop back which makes me happy I found this place. Not to mention I have to wait about 3 weeks and pulled teeth just to get an RMA. I have gone over every page in this forum and will be trying to find a replacement fan myself if I get the same one back.
Tons of good info on here. I sold off my SLI Titan build to pick up this laptop, with about 1/3rd the power, it's stronger than I expected. Having to use my daughter's i3 Asus for now though.... sigh
