I'll set your values and try to find the best ones that fit the beast ! -
It tells you here how to do it. But instead of restarting in safe mode as explained here How To Boot Into Safe Mode On Windows 8 (The Easy Way) you will have to press key 7 to start windows without the driver signature requirement. Some safety from Microsoft for babies not to install the wrong thing in their windows, which makes it more difficult for us, who want to try / experiment new / beta drivers. -

actually the 320.49 drivers caused me driver_power_state_failure
going back to 311.70

also it doesn't seem to work on the MSI GTX 780M , but i have been the only one to test them with MSI laptop , they do flash onto the card but when u increase the voltage , it doesn't increase more than 1.012 V :\
also the link that juilant posted is for the GTX 780 not the 780M -

Sorry double post
-
Can you link to where you get the MSI 311.70 driver at? Thank -
All drivers are here :
MSI Global GT60 2OD
Go to downloads then drivers. -
-
Any benefits to using 311.70 vs 311.48? Mine shipped with .48 and I just didn't know if I should even bother changing the driver.
-
Hey guys, so i FINALLY got the computer about a week ago and wow i am in love with it
the only problem is i cant figure out why the webcam wont detect on skype or anything...is there a specific driver i need to install? thanks in advance fam !
-
Did you try fn + F6 button, if I remember those combos turn the webcam on and off.
-
-
awesome that worked thanks guys! also just out of curiosity what color combos are you using at the moment?
i have green on the left, red in the middle, blue on right -
Light blue + Green + Light blue
-
I like all red

I'm really liking my new GT60 2OD and had a few comments and a question.
PROS - The speakers are AMAZING for a laptop. The screen and keyboard are also very nice. The 780M chews through whatever you can throw at it.
CONS - Small trackpad (works pretty well considering but I wish it was larger). Warrantee sticker. Fan is slightly audible even when just surfing the net. If I don't use the turbo fan my GPU temps are getting up to 93C when playing Far Cry 3. I also could not get PowerDVD to work with Blu-Rays even with the newest update. I will try AnyDVD.
My question is what is a reasonable GPU temp (without turbo fan) when playing Far Cry 3? Should I repaste? What should I expect for CPU temp. when playing a game?
Thanks. -
CPU temps are in the 80s normally due to the thermal bridge. But really it will depend on each game. Some games tax more the CPU like RTS games. -
Those temps sound a tad on the toasty side and the Turbo fan is just insanely loud so is everyone seeing 88-90 on the GPU without turbo and the 780m or have some of you guys not repasted yet ?. Out of the gazillion laptops i have owned i personally have found repasting not offering much of any improvement long term. Most people jump the gun and will say it dropped it 5 degrees but i always give everything a few days before i come to any conclusion regarding temps because things settle or change and generally they go back to normal.
I cant imagine the 17 will be even a little different temperature wise seeing as the layout is essentially identical. -
I clearly posted pictures of the temperature while benchmarking or playing games for near 1 1/2 hours continuously and with turbo fan off. The room temperature was 22-23 degrees Celsius while doing that and the maximum temperature that this machine reached was ~89 rarely. If you use turbofan, then you have to reduce by 8-9 degrees while doing intensive gaming or benchmarking.
And while you do any browsing or music, etc. (daily productive work), this system is completely silent and the temperature stays in the high 40~50. John566, you must be having the same 'rubbish' NSTECH fan that everyone is facing problems and it irritates while doing nothing on the machine. Unfortunately, the only way around is to get a replacement with the T&T model (Already posted this few threads back).
I am very satisfied with this machine, and to add to it, if you have even a cooling pad you are by far safe in doing anything stupid to this machine. My advice to everyone is to stay away from overclocking (unless you really know what you are doing and you are watching close the temperature) and benchmarking, Game as much as you can! -
-
Thanks Juliant i have not read every single post and am still trying to play catchup on the whole single fan MSI temps are higher then i am used to debacle
.
Coming from Alienwares i just got used to low temps even under hot conditions IE ambient temps but with the MSI i will certainly have to be a little more mindful of my temps and i am not much of an overclocker anymore but i am also not a guy who runs a laptop cooler either as i move my machines around to much to be dragging around more equipment every step i take.
The Turbo fan thing for me though is outta the question i heard that thing in a video and freaked out because in the M17xR2 days the fans sounded like that all the time and it made me beyond crazy .
Guess i will have to settle for higher temps like it or not. -
Unfortunately I have not seen a competition on the 15.6" systems to this one and that was the reason I got one. We have to agree that this is well built, with great quality material (even if there is a lot of plastic) and I was very tempted to get a clevo / sager because of the dual fan possibility, but for some reason this time both alienware and clevo / sager put me off with their cheap keyboards. Really if this much they cannot pay attention to those machine, its a sad story... Anyway, that is something else.
You will get used to it and you will find that is not a bad machine... I too got it for portability advantage and I have used it several times on my lap while travelling without facing any issues. You just have to make sure that you keep that venting area opened. -
Got the svl7 mod vbios and 311.70 driver install. Currently running it at +145/300 without any issues.

NVIDIA Kepler VBIOS mods - Overclocking Editions, modified clocks, voltage tweaks -
Also can you check the serial number written on those Mushkins' memory modules? I'm curious if they are Toshiba Toggle ones or Micron Synchronous ones. -
Got the vbios from there. After further testing, my stable clock is +145/200. Also I got a higher score in 3dmark11 with that clock than +145/300. Max temperature around 82c in battlefield 3 and I don't noticed any down clock anymore.
I still think we are power limit, if we are able to use a 240watt psu and overvolted this thing I don't see we having a problem reaching 10k gpu. -
Hey my fellow GT60 owners, Im new to this thread and in the process of waiting for my gt60 to arrive. not sure how long it'll be. I was curious if anyone is having any kind of problems with the start up of their gt60 and what I mean by startup is any programs, updates, or drivers that arent working properly upon getting your laptop setup. Like many people, i got the i7 4700 with the gtx 780m, 128g msata and 750gb hardrive. blueray player, killer network card. Ive been reading a lot of about fan issues so if mine is like many others(which probably will be) then getting that t&t fan will probably be my choice. But I am curious to know what is the difference between the t&t and the stock fan in regards to performance of cooling and noise. Any feedback would be nice. Also, I hear a lot of people repasting their thermal paste. I never even knew laptops had such thing so was wondering what are the normal temps for idle, surfing the web/media, and gaming. Thank you
-
I know it is a very long thread, but since you are waiting for your rig (Welcome to the club!), a good start for you is to start reading it. You will get all the answers that bothers you. I doubt there is anything left behind regarding built, performance, portability, issues etc. etc.
-
I was going to tell you the same thing as Juliant, but I have time this morning ;D and can understand almost 100 pages to read could be discouraging.
I had the NSTECH I don't know what fan, and it is a real plague. You GT60 is supposed to be completely noiseless, or at least, you can hear a little blow sound from the fan... but it does not have to make that high-pitched sound as if a mini ball was hitting the fan while blowing.
Juliant had this same issue, as I did. You can find a guy name Majester or something on this forum, who sells T&T noiseless fan. Juliant bought one, and correct me if I'm wrong, it is noiseless but does not lower your T°C as the NSTECH does (you just have 1 or 2°C increase).
About repasting : if it is your 1st time, you should buy Artic Cooling MX4 or IC Diamond 7 thermal paste. Those are, from my point of view, the best ones to get good Temperatures. Forget the Artic Silver 5 because you need to "cook" you GPU and CPU for around 200 hours in order for the thermal paste to be effective (who wants to wait for 200 hours ??). Though you can find it everywhere and is really cheap (in terms of cost). The MX4 has the property to be effective in minutes (around 20). IC Diamond is hard to spread, more expensive but rewarding if correctly done.
Put the amount of a "piece of rice" and let the heatsink do the job. It will squeeze and efficiently spread your thermal paste.
About the temperatures based on my own experience (I live in France on the coast, so we often get nice weather temperatures) : of course, it depends on the ambient temperature and considering that you have already REPASTED : let's say an average of 23°C in your room, you should be around 40-43°C in idle. Googling, watching videos on youtube : you should hear a small blow noise from the fan that starts working and be around 48-55°C (up to 65°C : I was downloading at the same time stuff on steam, googling and listening to some clips on youtube... but it is not constant, this was my max T°C reached for a few seconds).
Now while gaming, you'll get the hottest T°C. Without Cooler boost : the max I got was 78-80°C for the CPU. My GPU went up to 91-92°C (I think it was the highest temp I could get on COH 2 and BF3, everything on ultra).
One more detail : I'm using a Cooler master Notepal U3 WITHOUT any fans, I just put my GT60 on it and it cools down a little bit the T°C.
For the time I spent to answer you, and also the time you saved instead of reading the 100 pages, you can paypal me, I'll not refuse it !!! ;D
J/k, just want to make sure... -
Where do you get software for the webcam? And the NOS stuff? I had the clean install done from gentech.
-
They didn't add it after the clean install? That sucks, if it's not on your driver CD's try here:
MSI Global GT60 2OD
Go to downloads and it shold be there. -
The reason the system is a little warmer at idle use of the new fan (T&T) it is because it runs at a lower RPM by default. But even if you increase that speed (I will get back to this) it will still be silent and not have the rickety sound you get from the NSTECH one.
The fan can be bought in case you cannot have it replaced, from this gentleman (not trying to promote, but he has been always very helpful and he ships lighting fast + delivery is very quick as well) - http://forum.notebookreview.com/member.php?u=445719
And the fan control can be adjusted (though it is still experimental through Pherein's fan tool (more info here, though you can go back a little bit on the thread and find out more) - http://forum.notebookreview.com/msi/719029-official-msi-gt60-2od-owners-lounge-90.html -
Warrantee sticker I just plowed right through ha, popped the back panel off to repaste GPU/CPU and install a Crucial M4 mSATA 256GB SSD I had laying around. I had some MX-3 from a previous job, was curious if it would make much difference over stock paste. First thoughts are not really.
I do have the Nstech fan I noticed while everything was apart, and I also have the "grinding" type noise when it's running slow. Will definitely be something I keep an eye on, but at this point it's definitely not worth sending the machine in, and if it bugs me down the road I'll swap it out. It's audible, but only when trying to hear it or paying attention, but curious to see if it wears in and gets any better or if it worsens with use.
My biggest annoyance is temps, as everyone else mentions. Without turbo fan, playing BF3, Metro, or really about anything that uses the 780m shoots GPU temps to 90+. I've seen 92-93C after a couple minutes and then I chicken out and hit turbo. As mentioned, didn't notice much difference between stock paste and MX3. Turbo fan will cool things down A LOT, ~80C, but man is it a noise penalty! It's literally way too loud to use with anyone else in the room, which is disappointing. My fiancé thinks I'm crazy when I turn it on, and I can't say I blame her as it is completely distracting/annoying and drowns out our regular TV volume. This is the main area I have to improve. Stock fan speeds are just too low but quiet, and turbo is just WAY too loud.
Other thoughts, currently running the 2 mSATA SDD's in AHCI mode and they are playing nice together... running the OS on the 256GB Crucial as C: I added for a little extra space, have the stock Sandisk as a fast F: drive, and the stock HDD for main game storage. When I run across another Crucial on sale I'll be tempted to play with RAID.
Overall really happy with the machine. Battery life is 4+ hours I'm guessing based on usage so far but not a full test yet. Bottom two RAM slots are blocked by heat pipe, was going to play around with adding some more RAM I had in a drawer but didn't feel like popping the thermal bridge heatsink off again after the first repaste.
Still having the same Blu Ray problem I reported a few days back and John566 is having. DVD's play fine with PowerDVD, but Blu Rays give a read error and won't load. ANYDVD did fix the problem (thanks for the tip!), and PowerDVD then played them great so it's not a hardware issue, but I'm too cheap to buy AnyDVD and don't feel I should have to on a brand new machine that is suppose to play Blu rays out of the box.... so, any thoughts here would be great, going to continue researching a fix. On the plus side, when they do play they look AWESOME
Well, turned into a random mash of thoughts. Really nice laptop that with some tweaks is a great performer for the money. 3DMark11 scores of 8200+ with an easy small OC are way better than anything else I've ever got to enjoy! It literally tears through every game out there at the moment! -
Very nice Germaneer
As for cooling pads I have a NZXT CRYO LX cooler and ZALMAN 2000 both should work great with this laptop if needed.
NZXT CRYO LX
Huge but fantastic cooler that folds up and has many extra USB ports, quiet but cools very well,
3 fans are nice
ZALMAN 2000
Another great cooler nothing fancy about it but gets the job done.
Now I don't have my laptop yet to try each cooler both should be good for this laptop. -
I can vouch that the Zalman 2000 fits it perfectly. Totally stable platform, nice cooler. I haven't used mine in years but dug it out of storage to try out. Will report in once I monitor temps, but I have to assume it will help when sitting at the desk.
EDIT: Another feature I've noticed that I haven't seen mentioned but probably missed... when on integrated gpu, the power button glows white. When on the 780m, it glows orange. Nice way to tell what it's using! -
Also have you tried this patch for PowerDVD?
MSI Global â Download Center -
-
I also had playback issues when I first got the laptop. I can't remember now how I fixed it, but I was able to fix it and it plays in PowerDVD just fine now. I'll keep looking.
-
-
lol haha Thank you, I really appreciate you taking a lot of time to point out those important details and help me. I had IC 7 thermal paste added when i customized mine through xoticpc. Not sure how good of a job they will do. I also use a notebook cooler with a fan so i am assuming that will help as well.

Finally had a quiet afternoon to play a bit before heading to a cookout... played a little over an hour of BF3 online in a full 64 player server, all Ultra settings @ 1080p, framerates 55+ without any tweaks or adjusting. Runs really really well. Very happy with performance. All playing today was done at stock clocks. But, temps, here's where my notes and concerns come into play:
Stock clocks, fan in normal mode (no turbo) - CPU around 87-89C, GPU goes to 93C after a few minutes, seems to stabilize and then starts throttling, or at least drops boost (850 down to ~730ish), framerate noticeably suffered, begins dipping down into the 40's, sometimes 30's. Overall no where near as seamless and smooth as before.
So, figure hit the turbo fan and see what happens: Same game session, just tapped the button and kept playing. After a minute or two, temps have dropped to around 80C, and they kept dropping as I played. Clocks bumped back up to 850mhz (well, Afterburner reports them as 849), and temps kept dropping to finally stabilized at 72-73C for the remainder of the game session. Notebook was noticeably cooler, and there was no throttling and stable temps. CPU dropped down into the upper 60's, low 70's C
Is anyone else seeing such a huge difference? It never passed 73C for 45 minutes of playing with turbo fan, and was low 90's with no turbo fan until boost dropped out and stabilized at 93C.
Gamed really well, first time I've gotten to play BF3 at ultra. Struggle to figure out why they kept the normal fan speed so low though that it starts to throttle. -
Did you repaste the GPU or is it still stock paste?
For some members the factory paste job is just sloppy and not very well done and temps are often higher than when you repaste with a good quality paste. I know some members have noticed a huge change when they did the job themselves. -
Yep, repasted with mx3 I had laying around yesterday while I had her open. Struggle to think it's the paste because temps are so low and stable with turbo fan on. I guess I'll play around with fan speeds as mentioned previously a few pages back. Seems MSI just has stock fan speeds too slow.
-
Try raising the back of the laptop a bit with anything, bottle caps, eraser's, anything for better airflow and see if that helps, sometimes something as simple as that helps.
-
plus, turbo fan does solve it completely at the touch of a button, just bring the earplugs ha
Try that in a library and see how fast you are asked to leave
