Congrats on your new machine and welcome aboard![]()
The front lights on the GX660 were connected to the sound board and from there to a controller chip on the motherboard. Since the first GT60 model the connection was removed along with the controller chip so I'm afraid you can't do that anymore![]()

Well that blows. I'd love to see someone retrofit something in there though. I really liked that feature on the 660's. Tied in with the MSI logo on the lid, that would be very cool.
Next question. Can you set the keyboard lighting to turn off when closing the lid? I'm not seeing an option for that anywhere. -
Thanks for sharing and yes, Ken makes everything much better -

Got another question. My GT60 didn't come with a "dust-cover" for the SD slot. My GX660R did. Is this item missing, or does MSI not include it any longer?
If it is missing, where/how can I get another one? -
Guys -
I am thinking about selling my GT60-2OD but I am not sure where I can sell it. I really do not want to incur 11% for ebay costs, the 3% for pay pal is bad enough. Anyone have any recommendations on where or how I can sell it? I love this machine to death, but I am starting to travel more and I want something a little smaller. Thinking of the GE40 or the Gigabyte p34g!!!
xMar99 - Did you ever have success selling your old machine?

I can't help you on selling it. The market for high-end gaming laptops is pretty thin, and most aren't looking for them on the places where you would normally sell used goods. You CAN try CraigsList, but I wouldn't expect any miracles.
If you work with a lot of people, you can also try word-of-mouth or posting a for-sale notice on a bulletin board. -

Is it possible to install the 3K screen in the Normal GT60 - 20D?
EDIT: NVM , found the answer here :
http://forum.notebookreview.com/msi/736855-gt60-3k-edition-first-impressions.html
EDIT#2: Actually they never tested it on the GT60 , so question is still valid.
EDIT#3: Also How do you remove the LCD? Thanks, I have water mark on my LCD , I am gonna wait to see if it evaporates but if doesn't I would to like to clean it myself or just upgrade to the 3K screen.
EDIT#4: well looks like the 3K won't work on the normal version due to connectors being different however it might be possible to connect it using something like this:

Still wondering how to access LCD -

The bezel is simply clipped on in the 15 inch models.
-
Killerinstinct Notebook Evangelist
EDIT: also is it possible to remove bezel without removing screen section from the laptop base ?
EDIT#2: nevermind , It is possible to remove the bezel while connected to the base, and the method I use was a small flathead just stuck it in and turned to unclip the hooks -

That or fingernails on the inside edge and care.

On another note, I finally got around to swapping my terribly noisy fan with a new replacement yesterday, SO much better! It's another NSTech, but is significantly more quiet than my previous fan than original... I obviously got a bad one originally now that I hear a different one ha... new one is actually quiet during normal desktop usage! That was not the case before, I always had an annoying whine grrrrr noise that drove me absolutely nuts! Much happier now, if only I had done this 6 months ago! -

this laptop has the panel:

Since I don't have the time to modify a mounting bracket i might get the B156HW01 V.4.be77solo likes this. -
Curious Killer, how much better you think that IPS panel is? I'd be up for modifying the brackets as long as the electrical connectors work properly to drive it and it's a noticeable upgrade.

Besides IPS, would love to see 120Hz panel being used on the laptop for a smoother experience, but it will also cost a lot of more. -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
From MSI's standpoint certainly no more than the 3k actually, mostly at the moment it comes down to the fact that optimus wont work with a 120hz panel at the moment.
-
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
Besides, 120Hz is not intended for 3D since it raises the bar for fps. -

They just dont make the panels any more, 120hz 1080p for 15.6" and 3k for 17.3 inch would make a lot of sense.

the resolution was on the 15" screens listed in the link above was only 768p:

16:10 is nice but 2160 pixels of vertical resolution should he enough

that's missing the point. go over to the 16:10 thread and i'll educate you.

No point discussing it to be brutally honest. With the cost of retooling and chassis redesign it's simply not going to happen at this point.

The panels are cheaper and easier to produce.

Then start up a company and tap into that market demand or convince the lcd manufacturers to retool back to 16:10 production. Arguing with me will not help achieve either of those goals.

Well, just wanted to follow up and report how happy I have been with the replacement fan I installed last week sent from Majester here on these boards... I assumed all the Nstech fans were a noisy mess like my original and it really had me pondering getting rid of this laptop because it was driving me nuts every time I used it, but this replacement fan is great. My GT60 is essentially silent for the first time in 6 months since I've owned it when doing normal desktop work... no grinding or grrrr sounds from the fan.
If you have annoying fan noise at idle, swap it out!
Otherwise, after 6 months of daily usage, laptop has been totally stable and reliable, still running and performing great. Still very happy with the 780m's performance, honestly nothing I've yet tried has even challenged it and I end up artificially limiting framerate to 60 FPS to limit needless power consumption and heat.
Good machine! Only gripe after long term usage is hopefully in the future MSI modernizes the chassis design/style. It's totally functional, don't get me wrong, but feels a bit dated and needs a facelift.inperfectdarkness likes this. -
I just wanted to stop in and say hello. I just bought a 20D-026US last week. I received it Friday despite the winter storms in the Northeast and the patchy ice here in Texas on delivery day. I've been playing around with it all weekend. I bought my first MacBook last year and it is a great machine but I dearly missed the horsepower of a real GPU. The MacBook's 650m just isn't much help with Skyrim and practically anything else.
Anyway. I really love this machine. I think it is the perfect balance of size and power. The 1TB hard drive is a little slow but I also have a 1TB Samsung EVO mSATA which is smoking fast. It's a shame that the 128GB SSD is not a retail model. I would kind of like to buy one more and run them RAID 0.
I have a couple of questions for you guys:
1. Why did I have to download the non-raid bios file from the MSI website? This model has three mSATA ports and "Super RAID". I messed with that for two hours before I figured out that I was trying to flash the wrong BIOS.
2. How do you configure the RAID? I am an old IT guy and I'm used to pressing Ctrl + A or something like that on boot in order to get into the raid configuration and identify the member drives and so on.
I haven't updated many of the drivers. I updated the EC and the BIOS. I installed the latest non-beta nVidia driver and the newest Synaptics driver on the MSI website. (I downloaded the very latest Synaptics driver from Synaptics but it didn't work at all.)
I was having a weird problem where the touchpad was crazy after waking from sleep mode but the EC and BIOS updates appear to have fixed that.
One minor annoyance with the laptop and perhaps it's just me but I tend to reach for the touchpad with my right index finger and I am forever accidentally activating the charm bar. Very annoying. Any advice on that front would be appreciated. I am trying to form the habit of reaching to the middle of it so I don't do that. It's kind of small and that makes it easy to do.
Thank you for all your posts and the wealth of information in this thread! -

I think the chassis is relatively up to date. Much less plastic than the GX660R's, and way less fugly fake chrome. Understated is better.
-
Thanks Luto -
1TB mSATA.... That must be awesome.
1) I think the RAID BIOS is when you have the mSATAs configured in RAID already, so flash the non-raid one if you're not using RAID. Feel free to correct me on this.
As for the touchpad, you can turn the charm bar shortcut off if you want. -
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
BIOS only sets one mode as its default. -
Thanks for the correction Kevin! -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
A lot of confusion arises from that option but most users don't know how to into the bios and change it.
-
Thank you for the replies to my question. However, I may be a bit of a slow learner on MSI laptops. There were two possible BIOS for the laptop. One was RAID and the other was non-RAID. Are they both for my laptop? One was for when I have mSATA drives configured in a RAID setup and the other is for when I am running the drives as regular old individuals?
I'm guessing from your replies that if I did have two drives that were identical and wanted to run RAID that I would go into BIOS and change the SATA drive type from AHCI to RAID and then more options would appear for me to specify the members. It is all done in the BIOS. Am I on the right track there? I don't think I'll be buying any more 1TB mSATA drives unless I win the lottery but I might buy a couple of 128GB or larger on sale or something. -
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
Regardless the type of BIOS, every BIOS contains IDE/AHCI/RAID modes and you can change it nevertheless.
For example, you can have AHCI BIOS and switched to RAID mode if the drive requirement is met.
Otherwise, you can have RAID BIOS running in AHCI mode.xMAR99 likes this.
