Ok. See if even with Linux behaves like this. If it works normaly than you can update to 8.1 and do an EC reset. To do so first remove the battery and the power cord from the notebook. Leave it like this for about 5-10 min (just enough time for the capacitors to discharge). Then put everything together and upgrade to 8.1 remember to disconnect from the internet during the upgrade otherwise it will convert your local account into an online microsoft account and start syncronising with skydrive (don't want that right? :p). Try stressing again.

Thanks. Appreciate the feedback. Seems like Intel solved some signal droping with the newer drivers. Still no wifi direct though :p

Installed Slax to a flash drive I had laying around and ran a GPU heavy stress test and no ramp up whatsoever. I'm going to try an EC reset and upgrade to 8.1 anyway I guess , do you buy any chance have any older EC's or BIOS' I could try, they are not hosted on MSI's website anymore?

So no ramp up in Linux either... After reseting the EC, try a redownload and a reflash again. Just to leave out of the equation a bad flash caused by corrupt downloaded files. I'm reading that they (MSI) changed the fan profile tables again and also tweaked something on the BIOS regarding the 780m. Sorry for making you go this far. I hope spending money is the last thing you need to do.. I'm an electronics engineer so troubleshooting it's part of my daily job :D

This right here, you are a lifesaver! I changed the update script of the non backlight EC so it would flash on mine, flashed it twice, rebooted and fan seems to be working perfectly, playing Thief and I've heard it go up once or twice and even the keyboard backlight still works

EDIT: it is probably worth noting that I also took apart the fan and reseated it, and unplugged (what i think was) the CMOS battery (yellow circle looking thing under the board, plugged in on top of the board) for a bit and put it all back together THEN did the flashing. but thank you nonetheless!

Nice!!! I'm glad it worked out. I did mention it first on my previous post about disconnecting the BIOS battery but then edited it out because I thought was software related and clearing the CMOS would just reset your config and do nothing. The EC was the culprit after all :). In fact with pherein's tool, you were manually overwriting it's values. Enjoy your notebook!!! :D

OkayI switched to the gaming profile in SCM (though that seemed to be all I could do, right clicking on it didnt give me any sort of extra options) and I just reinstalled the latest directx 9 so I will give it a shot. I am still unsure why my computer is deciding I should run Skyrim at low quality though. Anyway thanks for the help and i'll let you know what happens!

The power button did change orange when I ran it. Still having lots of issues though. For instance Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet, when run on my integrated card boots right up. When run on my GTX780m after the "Games For windows" logo the screen just turns black. I can hear the intro music but I have to alt tab out and back in a couple times before the intro screen appears. Then when playing the game it will totally freeze up for a few seconds randomly, though it seems to do it more when I am entering a new area. Any ideas on what is going on?

Both Intel and Nvidia have released new drivers recently.

    Intel Graphics:
    Download

    Nvidia Graphics:
    Download

Try to update them, and see if the situation improves or not.
But if problem persists, then contact MSI for warranty service since black screen is usually an indication of hardware failure.

Ive updated to the newest Nvidia driver, but not the Intel one, ill give that a try. As far as a warranty I bought it refurbished, but I may still have a warranty for it. I think it's 120 days or so

Hello to all. I've just joined the club: bought a used GT60-2OD. This is an incredible machine, a real step up from my previous Dell XPS 15 with a 540m.

I've searched within this forum for an answer and didn't find what I was looking for. If this is posted in the wrong thread, please feel free to tell me or point me in the right direction.

The problem is: as with every used computer i bought before, I did a clean Windows install in it. It had Win8.1 so I copied the serial key (provided by Speccy) and resetted it using the 4 recovery discs provided in the first post of this thread. Everything went normal (it didn"t ask me the serial number) but after all the formatting and installing, I realized that the Win8 is not activated. I tried to input the previous serial of the old install and it did not work as well. Then I tried the F3 reset method, to the same results.

It's my first Win8 installation I did, so I don"t know what maybe wrong. Have I lost my original serial key forever and must buy a new one from Microsoft? Please god no :(

Thanks in advance and sorry for the bad English, it's not my native language. Cheers

Use the recovery discs to restore the OS, then connect to the internet to allow activation to pass.

Hello Kevin, thanks for the reply.

Unfortunately, Windows already asks for a internet connection when reinstalling, so the activation is supposedly already done. Windows can't seem to recognize the OEM activation key. I don't have any clue as why this is happening. Anyway, I'm gonna try to install a retail Win8 using an iso, and then inserting the OEM key.

Curious, isn't the Windows Key stored in the UEFI? You shouldn't have to enter it at all during installation assuming you have the BIOS set to UEFI mode.

Yeah, that's what I thought as well. I followed the usual steps, everything went normal and Windows didn't ask for a key during installation. But when I go to settings and check the activation, there's already a serial number in there (I suppose that it is the UEFI key, right?) and says that it is not valid. I think I lost my Win8 copy forever :(

880M shouldn't be that much different if you don't want to wait.

A few systems have seemed to not have the best paste job, an issue that should be picked up by the reseller before shipping (if they do proper due diligence on retail models and don't just ship the box).

What 122W card? The most power hungry is the 780M 110W at the moment.

If thermal paste is not helping there may be a problem with the heatsink itself or the pads.

If you are still having this trouble then contact MSI to get a RMA# to send the system in if it can be spared.
They will have to remove the current key and replace it with a new one in the BIOS for you therefore it requires the machine in their facility.

Well i bought GT60 OD from XKOM and i had to RMA it ;__; Performance was getting to ridiculously low levels when laptop was starting to heat up, though it was not throttling as GTX780M throttles at 92 celsius and it was usually at 86-87 at maxed load. I suspect something wrong with Hybrid power technology or PSU. Hopefully MSI will find the cause of that.

Laptop is not really that loud, and those few times it actually worked, performance was stunning for something that small

all right. i'm getting pretty ticked off at 1202 killer BS now. is the 7620 the only upgrade available, or are there others? and does MSI use a whitelist to block wi-fi cards--requiring a bios flash--or can i just plug and play?

First update EC Firmware on MSI site, if you bought it from XKOM, they come with outdated EC with different fan profiles.
If you are using "game power plan" in windows, idle temps will always be higher

Those pics posted are as removed and not cleaned? Seriously?? Did you say this machine came from a reseller? That is absolutely a disaster waiting to happen, and of course explains high temps. I'm shocked.

Assuming permanent damage hasn't been done, apply some paste and you'll be significantly cooler. To answer your question, no, that is not normal or correct as shown above.

    Good luck, that sucks!
