I have a pair of 512GB Vectors, got one of them refurbished for cheap, had no issues so far.

Ok guys sorry if this question has been asked but I couldn't find it with a search.
What is the easiest way to overclock the CPU in this thing? I bought the GT60 in July 2013 and the BIOS is still the original one that it came with and it does not support overclock. Any ideas??
Thanks in advance this thread has been a lot of help the last 9 months.

Hey everyone
Any chance at using the SteelSeries Engine on our models? (GT60-2OD)
I tried but it doesn't recognise the keyboard
I'm running on stock BIOS and EC. Maybe it's searching for a specific String ID that my factory original BIOS doesn't have. -
Download the Intel XTU Extreme Tuning Utility... can play with voltage and clock speeds using the sliders.

Or for more detailed control an unlocked bios but xtu is best for beginners.

Hi guys, okay so I have an issue. Basically, I bought the msi gt-60 20D around 7 months ago and it's always worked fine. That being said, I never really started gaming on it properly because of a busy schedule and exams and such. Now that I'm free, i started to use. So I've been playing Dragon Age Origins recently and as is obvious, it's nothing at all for the 780m to run it on max. So that's fine. The problem is that when I launch the game, the frames are good and for about 15ish minutes, it stays at 60 fps which is perfect. However, when time passes the fps drops and it becomes laggy. The curious thing about this is that when I use GPU-Z to check the temperatures while the game is launched, the intel card has a temperature of around 85 (sometimes in the 90's) and the 780m is around 75. I thought maybe the game is running on the intel card but that's not possible because if I launch it manually using the intel card, the fps is around 10. So the thing is that it is using the Nvidia card but also seems to be using the intel card and I think the Intel Card heats up and eventually leads to a drop in the frames. This is a very stupid issue and I'm not really much of an expert in computers so I'm a bit lost. The other thing is that if I minimize the window and open it again in 10 minutes, the frames go up to 60 again and eventually drop with time. Please help. This was an expensive buy and I'm now worried. Is there any reason why the laptop would be using both cards?
-
The Intel "card" is built into the CPU so it's measuring mostly the CPU temperature. You could use some logging software to check if the CPU is clocking down - or the GPU.
-
I figured that might be it. Well that kind of confuses me because the CPU should be able to run DA: Origins without much issue. Either way, turning on the turbo boost fan solved the issue. If anyone has a solution for me without using the fan, it would be much appreciated otherwise I guess I'll have to stick to this.
Thanks for the response btw! -

Probably will work slightly cooler if you reapply IC diamond. -
My notebook is still going as strong as ever and I have only run into one issue - Bluetooth, it goes out sometimes even when I don't disable it manually. Any suggestions on fixing the Buetooth for fixing it to have a consistent connection?

If you're using the stock Killer card, no clue. If you're using intel, i'd update the drivers.

Guys I might need some help here. I had the day off and decided to give the laptop a repaste and cleaning. Took it apart and when I removed the heatsinks I heard something rolling aorund. I looked down and saw one of the CPU heatsink mounts had been pulled out of its socket on the board. I was able to put it back in with some force, but of course when I screw in the heatsink the force pulls it out of the board because it needs to be soldered in or something.
I would turn to MSI, but I already know they're going to say I damaged it when I replaced the thermal pads and paste for a better cooling product. Me damaging the mount is BS, but that will definitely be their place is my guess. I will call them and talk to them about it myself to see what they say later on. Anyone know of an easy way to repair this myself? Are those soldered in, or simply placed in with some type of adhesive? I couldn't really get a good look to see how they secured these to the board. Thanks in advance!!
I've listed the laptop on eBay for a greatly reduced price, and might even reduce the price a bit more to just dump it. I am not prepared to be without a laptop for a month or so while MSI or whomever repair its fully if necessary. I'll take the hit and replace the laptop in full and let someone else take care of it.
As it stands now, I put the laptop back together, and ran a stress test and temps are fine. Idle temps typing this on a 4900MQ are 45C. XTU benchmark showed 70C. Regular fan profile and undervolted -85mV as usual for me. I guess I could just not worry about it and let it be? Any thoughts on that?
Thanks! -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
You could look to use some high powered adhesive to reattach it. Just make sure it is ok for use on a pcb.
-
Thanks for the response Meaker, I was able to source some good electronics grade/safe rubber silicone adhesive/sealant. It seemed to do the trick nicely. However, now I have an itch to try my hand at soldering. I have an old iron from a class I took years ago in high school. How difficult is it to fully disassemble this laptop so I can give it a try and soldering the mounts from the backside and creating a permanent solution.
-
The problem I have taking things completely apart and trying to put them back together is there are always extra parts @_@, it's like they multiply when I'm not looking!
Just be extra careful and note what goes where and you should be OK if your comfortable taking your whole laptop apart. -
Hey!
I had the same problem as you (you can look earlier in the thread). After a while frames were drastically dropping even though GPU run at 99% and there was not throttling at all. When i alt+tabbed and went back after a while everything was normal for few minutes. I've tried EVERYTHING and finally i send it to MSI. Got my laptop back after two weeks with adnotation "Graphic card fixed". I think they just replaced it. My laptop is from around the same time as yours, so it might be some kind of a problem with GTX 780's MSI had.
I wasted a lot of time trying various software and hardware solutions, so i recommend you to send it to MSI. Don't waste your time if you have warranty.
Also check if the same thing happens with some kind of looped benchmark - Uningine Valley for example. Just pause the scene and watch your FPSxMAR99 likes this. -

I've ran into an issue where my GT60 will occasionally display a completely black screen when I open the lid, but no key presses will "wake" the screen. Unplugging USB devices from it and re-plugging them will not register with the PC. I haven't been able to nail down the cause yet.
Anyone else ever experience this? -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
It can happen with any notebook Iif there is a driver or application interfering with the sleep wake up.
-
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
That was a strange symptom that you had but glad that it was finally resolved. -
inperfectdarkness Notebook Evangelist
Problem is, it never goes to sleep. I don't have sleep configured. It's 100% on the whole time. -
Prostar Computer Company Representative
Is it just the screen timing out? Do you have that configured in your power plan to shut off after a designated amount of time? -
inperfectdarkness Notebook Evangelist
Nope. It's set to turn off display after 5 minutes, which works fine. I I close the lid overnight, most of the time it's working fine when I lift the lid. But there's that 10% of the time when it's still on, but the display doesn't come on. Closing and re-opening the lid doesn't work. Trackpad/mouse/keyboard inputs don't work to wake it up. I'm stumped. -
Does this laptpp have the same chassis as the gt60 2pc dominator?i need opinion about thiss but the other forum there arw not a lot of people
Sent from my SHV-E210S using Tapatalk -
inperfectdarkness Notebook Evangelist
AFAIK, It's the same chassis as my 2010 GX660R, just with a few cosmetic changes.
-
This might require a more thorough analysis. We need to measure both temp and % utilization as well as clock speeds for both CPUs and GPUs on a large time window. We need to find if one is throttling of either is throttling or modulating speed etc. We need to monitor all this while you are gaming.
-
If you have the time in your hands to do the jon, i'd say give it a try to solder it back in carefully. If you have little or no time, don't bother because a rushed job is a no no!
-

I think I've narrowed down what the problem is. I use True-Crypt on one of my portable hard-drives, and last night, it was the ONLY peripheral drive connected. I dis-mounted the drive before I closed the lid, but I did not unplug the drive. So I think what's causing it is having a "non-formatted" drive connected to the system when the display turns off.
So I guess the easy fix is that I'll have to unplug any encrypted drives. -
Hello guys,
I am new in the forum and the topic I just bought a GT60 2OC without a windows. The only problem is that, when I set the bios to UEFI or UEFI CSM, the bios does not detect my hard drive in the meaning that in legacy the Hard Drive is detect in the boot options and not in UEFI.
I can install windows 8 while running the DVD, but once the installation restarts to set the presets of windows, the pc can't boot on the drive because the UEFI does not detect it. When I set the bios to Legacy and I ran windows 8 DVD it says that my drive is in GPT and could not install on a GPT drive.
Please Help me if you can I am lost. The drive is detected in the System Section it s the boot section where it dissapears when set to UEFI.
THanks a lot. -

Have you tried formatting the HDD again? Look up a generic UEFI installation guide and follow it carefully.

Hi everyone. I have been working my through this thread and was hoping someone might have the restore disk iso's available.
I purchased the laptop used and can't get the recovery partition to launch with F3 while booting. I do see the recovery partition and have copied the install.wim off it. I can't seem to figure out how to make a usb stick with it though. Any help is appreciated. -
They're in the main post.
I copied them below:

You can contact MSI directly to have a set of recovery discs sent out to you asap.
They need to match the system by checking the serial number due to difference in configuration. -
Will the restore disks mentioned in this forum work if I have used the msata raid 0 configuration? Or will it assume the stock single msata/hdd configuration?
-
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
You need the right recovery set for this configuration, ask MSI if they are willing to send you one, and you may need to pay $35 for it if you are in the US. -
Just in case this helps anyone here is what I did to get a clean 8.1 install using the factory key in the bios:
1) Google pkeyui.exe, this is a program that can grap your bios windows key
2) Download windows 8.1 standard iso
3) Make a usb stick of step 2;
4) Add a file to the sources directory called ei.cfg containing
[EditionID]
Core
[Channel]
Retail
[VL]
0
4.5) While you are modifying the usb drive, go grab the sata/raid drivers from the MSI website, you will need them.
5) Boot to the usb drive and install windows 8.1, apply the drivers from 4.5, notice it does not ask for a product key at install.
6) After installation it will ask for a key, your win8 key from step 1 will work here.
7) Install your drivers and you are good to go.xMAR99 likes this. -
Just got this laptop with best buy extended warranty. I open the bottom cover and discover that the capacitor next to the lower cpu heatsink is missing. It looks like the capacitor is sheared off. I compare my motherboard to you tube videos and online sources.
please help me verify if this is suppose to be like that.

Don't know too much about laptops but according to this youtube video, it looks like you're missing that cylinder part (dunno if that's a capacitor or not):
MSI GT60 2OC 2OD Haswell Refresh Unboxing and Showcase w/ Benchmarks - YouTube
Does your laptop actually work without it? lol kinda curious -
it works. i rane hot cput test pro.
I have run many test yet but I will if someone tell me what test to run. System at this moment is stable. I played a few online games and working well or at least i think it is -
That's really interesting. I would ask BestBuy for a return/exchange regardless. For the price you're paying, you deserve to receive a unit without any missing components, however minor they are.
-
Yeah I wouldn't risk any long term damage, for your peice of mind just exchange the laptop for a new one.
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
That's an inductor, one of your power phases will be dead, the system will be able to run but I would not leave it as it is. Report it ASAP.
-
from your recommendation, I took it back to best buy.
because they do not have a service agreement for msi, I got in store credit for the full amount less extended warranty.
With that said, I can get a new laptop. So which one?
MSI GE60 Apache Pro
MSI GE60 Apache
Lenovo Y50 touch
These are the models available at best buy. I want to not choose the msi gt60 diamonator so that I can get ~$250ish amount on gift card to spend on other items such as a new dish washer or stove.
what do you guys think, which one? I will install a SSD hard drive later. -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
All very different types of machines targeting a slightly different segment. See if the battery life etc is up to your needs. Same for the 850m and 860m.

Heat, performance, and battery life, depends on what you want to focus on primarily.

I'm having a microsoft .NET framework "unhandled exception error" with MSI's SCM. Anyone else having this problem? Among other things, keyboard backlighting isn't working.

Remove the software and any other control software, update to latest.... everything

any idea where to DL the latest & greatest from MSI directly?
P.S.
It only seems to be one profile. If I log in with a different user profile, the SCM and KLM work just fine. This leads me to believe that it's just this one profile that has problems. Any ideas on how to fix just this one profile? (And please don't suggest deleting it & starting fresh--that's a last resort). -
In that case, try uninstalling and reinstalling the .NET framework. You can google for a tool that uninstalls the framework and then download the latest versions. As for the MSI software, you can find it searching your specific model via MSI's page, on their download section and go for the latest for your OS.inperfectdarkness and Kevin@GenTechPC like this.

i fixed it with an SCM/KLM delete & reinstall. took a while to find it on MSI's website though. Thanks.

You are welcome, and yeah sometimes it is hard to navigate the site but the good thing is you fixed it!
