Ugh. Vista is already installed right? As in it just goes through configuration type stuff on the first boot up? Thats kinda frustrating.

I guess I will just borrow my friends home premium disk and set up 64 bit through the abr method, make my recoveries, and clear out the hidden partition. The latest SCM releases still work in 64 even though they are technically for 32 bit right?

Quick question about the gt627 HDD. Does anyone else's make a sharp click once in awhile. I've had faulty hard drives before that click continuously but this doesn't have the same consistency. Is that just the hard drive engaging every once in awhile or do I have a mysterious problem? The computer seems to work fine but I'm just checking.

According to reports the key on the label on the bottom of the nb will validate a 64b install disk so you're fine. Plus IIRC the drivers are all 32/64b Windows Vista.

As to SCM dunno, but people have said that it does work under 64b Vista, or at least one version of it did.

I am considering this laptop for purchase. However, I am concerned about the cooling ability when on my lap. I currently have an HP DV5T with 9600M GT and it is fine on the table, but when I have it on my lap for extended periods of time it becames very hot. In fact, so hot that I have to put it down sometimes.

We all know that HP has a very poor cooling design - so if the MSI cooling design superior enough to dissipate more heat, while at the same providing cooler surfaces? I guess my main concern is that when it is on my lap, the air intake on the bottom (assuming this is on the bottom for the GT627) won't have the static pressure to suck in air, thus the heat will build up continually until eventually the little exhaust that does come out is very *hot*... I welcome people who OWN This laptop to comment on this. Can it be used on the lap?

    To summarize -

    1) How hot does this guy get on your lap when 'gaming'?
    2) If it is hot, what is the GPU temperature when on the lap?

I am not typically worried about the tempature of the GPU or CPU. I don't mind those things hitting 80C or 90C, but I would proably get worried if they climbed into the high 90's.

Ok the laptop on that link is indeed the MSI GT627. The only thing I think could be throwing you off is the version number. That laptop is the GT627-216. There is also a -218US version that has most notably a blu-ray drive and a higher resolution. Dunno if that is what you are referring to but...

I think they provided wrong pics. The pics seems like the gt725.

I forgot about the tax. They take about $90 for the tax. i changed my mind. I will buy it from ebay for $1120.

Just in case anyone was wondering about 64 bit compatibility with the new driver set MSI just released, tech just confirmed that although the website states that the drivers are 32 bit, they will also support 64 bit vista.

you only need 2 things, use the hp tool and the boot me files. install the hp tool. check format and make bootable and browse to where you stored the bootme files. then simply add the 3 bios files from the msi download to the stick by themselves not in any folder. reboot to the stick and type flash to start the bios update

Hey guys! I am looking forward to getting my self one of these. What would the best place to buy this from? Newegg? MSI directly? If I bought it from say newegg how does their warranty work? or I mean would I get a warranty from them or MSI because on Newegg they let you buy a warranty. I want this laptop to be protected and I am a little lost on what I should do. I'm new to buying computers online so I'm a little apprehensive about how to do it. Any ideas on the best route for a good price and warranty? What did all you guys do? Thanks in advance! :)

Newegg and Amazon are same price, but amazon has free shipping.
I'm also gonna asume returns and repairs are easier with Amazon.

They all do to some states. Plz don't mislead ppl.

Items sold by Amazon.com LLC, or its subsidiaries, and shipped to destinations in the states of Kansas, Kentucky, New York, North Dakota, or Washington are subject to tax.

    Does Newegg.com charge sales tax?

Newegg.com charges the appropriate state and/or local sales tax for any order shipping to California, New Jersey, and Tennessee. Sales tax for cell phone orders shipping to California and Tennessee are calculated before any instant savings are applied.

I've had the MSI 627 for month now. I got the Blu-Ray version. It's very nice, running almost every game I can throw at it (except for F.E.A.R. for some reason). Watching Blus on it is great. I love the fact that they give a bag with the laptop (OMG!). The only thing I hate about is that you need to have the computer plugged in to run high games or Blu-Rays.

The sales tax thing goes like this in the US ATM for most states:
If the business that you buy something from online, mail order, whatever has a physical presence(e.g. store, warehouse, etc.) in the state that you are ordering from/delivering to they are supposed to automatically charge sales tax for that state.

Also IIRC, a few states have been trying to force automatic sales tax collection, e.g. New York & California IIRC so some place may also charge sales tax for those states even if they have no presence there, when ordering from or having it delivered to those states. (I'm not at all sure how they apply sales tax, whether it's by delivery address or payment method address...)

Now, even when they don't apply sales tax for your state, you are supposed to cheerfully volunteer to go get rape... er pay your sales tax anyways.

It'll be interesting to see what they do now, that quite a few states are hugely jacking their alcohol and tobacco taxes, along with the federal tax increase, as you're not even really supposed to transfer any meaningful amounts of those items between states w/o paying the rap... er taxes on them, yet quite a few states still have very low taxes on those items even with the assininely large federal increase...

I have a quick question about the hinges on the laptop (that hold the screen up) are they good? or does the screen sway a lot. I have read in some reviews that they arnet too good... wanted to ask people who had the laptop....

    Thanks.

    ^^^^^^^

The hinges seem to be about as decent as a few notebooks that I've been using over the past few years (Del M1530, Acer Aspire 5610Z, Sager M95KE). I do have to say that the GT627's display hinges are a huge improvement over my work laptop (MSI MS-10341B), which allows the display to sway like an 18-wheeler's mudflap.

Hmm thanks for that, put me at ease a little for when i go and buy it. So it can keep the screen open if its like at 45 degrees?

One more question, how is the screen held down? Magnetic? Latch? or just the weight of the screen?

Open @ 45deg? Absolutely, or at least mine does.
The screen is held down by what seems to be a magnet.

One more thing if u don't mind... how would you say the screen brightness is on it, and about how much bat life do you get for like normal tasks?

I've owned this thing for < 1 week.

The screen brightness is good-to-go in my opinion for indoor use. As far as battery life, I haven't take it off the A/C adapter all that much. Take this with a grain of salt, but when on the "balanced" power setting, Vista reports about ~3.5 hours and ~3 hours on "high performance".

I'm currently looking to purchase the 627, but I'm having trouble deciding if it is worth spending the extra money to get the high end version. My aim is use this for gaming but I'm also going to be using it for school work, movie, and graphic design.

I think you should go with the higher end one since the price difference is very little and you get some more things like blu ray and such...

It all depends on if the extras are important to you.

Well, I think they are very tight, sturdy and they do a very well job from keeping the screen from wobbling.

They seem pretty small for the screen size tho. But I hope they keep tight long enough.

Oh, and I think you should go with the high end model, I was on the same boat as you and I can't regret it one bit. It's been awesome.

    Cheers!

If you can afford it, go for the 218US model and use it for both work and school. Working full time and getting my masters on the side, so I needed something fairly portable, powerful (run my IDEs and a game here and there). I was in the same boat as you and went with the 218. Lovin' the Blu Ray.

Quick question for anybody that has already upgraded their wireless adapter (or just laid eyes on it):

Is the pre-installed Intel 5100 a full mini or half mini?

I'd like to upgrade to the 5300, but there are two sizes. I'm experiencing connection woes, and from what I've read, it's most likely the 5100.

This is my first laptop :D

My old PC had 2.4Hz P4 processor, 1.25GB RAM, 6200 Geforce GPU and running windows vista :S.

So I think this laptop will be a different world for me

Thanks for the info. One more question, for nobody in particular:

Does anybody know where to get ahold of an Intel 5350? I've been doing alot of research and the 5350 seems like a good bet, especially in conjunction with my dual-band router... but I can't find any!! The only sellers I've found are a couple of shady retailers on eBay. Any suggestions?

What are you folks seeing for temperature on these machines?
While playing Crysis for about 40min. I recorded the following:

    Core0 68deg. C
    Core1 66deg. C

    GPU 73deg. C

    HDD 38deg. C

    Looks to be normal.
