Anand's LCD bezel cracking looks like some freak accident; I don't think I've seen anyone here report breaking anything on the chassis.

I wonder who was the genius to switch the Fn and CTRL keys. This laptop had the potential...

Actually there was a post just the other day of someone showing how their LCD bezel cracked.
And, someone else mentioned it was very easily cracked when they took it off.

The review on notebookcheck has some hard numbers for the WSXGA screen that look much better. Like twice the contrast mentioned for the WXGA.

Yeah I agree with you about the crack, but it was not as large as the one in the review.

I did not get any crack on my LCD bezel still :D

    I hope I don't get.

What do you mean by contrast?

Does it mean that how white is the white colour and how black is the black?

For my eye, my wxga screen looks very nice. It is not as great as the LED screens I saw, but it looks better than most mainstream laptops in terms of the black and white.

BTW what is contrast ratio? Is it the same as the contrast?

As I understand it, contrast ratio is the ratio of the brightness of a white pixel to the brightness of a black pixel. Basically, if your screen is very bright, but the blacks are also very bright, you don't have good contrast and colors won't differintiate as well. I'm no videophile (if that is a word), I just look at the numbers and try to get something that isn't on the low end. I think pretty much anything I buy will beat the screen on my Inspiron 6400.

Did you see the comparison I did with the inspiron 6400?

Just check it out ;) http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=4720670&postcount=656

Yes it is much better than the inspiron 6400. It does not look washed out when it is at full brightness like the inspiron 6400

Well, that helps where the key appears to be, but the computer still thinks FN is on the far left. You have to also tell the computer to recognize the leftmost key as CTRL. That's what the BIOS mod is for

Is it sad that I just learned about this laptop today? It looks like an absolute steal for $1299, and the design isn't absolutely outlandish like most gaming laptops. I was thinking about the Asus N81VP, but this is cheaper and comes with a 3-year MSI warranty if you get it from RK Computers.

Only a few concerns I have...I've read through the thread and seen it mentioned a few times, but just to confirm - you can get rid of the D: partition and have the whole 320GB (or however much it is) on C:, right?

Also, if I get this from Amazon, will I still have MSI's 3-year warranty? It says one year on Amazon, but from the way I understand it, if you register the laptop with MSI it has a 3-year warranty unless it's a barebone or netbook. I'd really like to order from Amazon, since I'm a Prime member and can get it here next-day for $3.99 rather than waiting for RK Computer shipping (7 days, I think).

I got my GT627 2 days back and it has already developed a small crack at the top right corner of the LCD screen ... Have read about this flaw before but it feels bad when u had your laptop just for 2 days and it develops a crack.. I havnt taken it out it infact I have used it just for 2 hours in the past 2 days as I was busy with some work so no case of rough handling ...

Now, I've read many posts saying different things on the same issue. If I buy this computer and I want to install the 64-bits version of Windows Vista : how do I do it clean? If I order the 10.00$ upgrade (shipping) from Microsoft, will it work 100% sure? Or do I have to buy the full-fledged edition?

How much more will it cost, CAD$?

When you install new OS, go to Custom, choose partition, then format it. It's gonna be clean install.
I got 64bit dvd from a friend, and my key didn't work, so... Don't get exited.

Guess I'll wait for an upgrade from MSI. Guess I'll wait a little bit, cause I don't want to pay too much to have Vista 64 bits.

What a dumb move from MSI. Great specs, but you can't use it all :p.

What kind of upgrade you are waiting from them?

Btw, I emailed MSI and asked if they can send me 64 bit DVD for a fee. They said they don't support/have it or smth like that.

Something like a new version of the 218US or the gt628 (???) (the upgrade which was supposed to come out last month but which was delayed for 2 months).

Maybe it will have the vista 64 bits edition.

Or maybe a good rebate on Newegg of 150$ CAD on the MSI GT627 218US would make me buy it...

Anybody knows if the Canadian version (Gt627 217CA) has Windows Vista 64 bits?

I just got a 64 disc from a friend and when I went to put the key in it say to call a number for Microsoft. Called them and after doing the automated phone thing with entering some numbers off my screen and putting in the numbers they gave me I had a registered copy of Vista 64. Just make sure it's home premium and not Vista Ultimate or business because you have a home premium key.

I've been looking at the GT627-217CA as well. All the site I went to doesn't say if its 64 or 32 bit OS. But I rather use Windows 7 anyway, free download from Microsoft.

And doesn't say if the 500GB HDD is 7200 RPM or 5400, but most likely 5400 RPM. www.cuttingedgecomputers.ca has the cheapest price I found so far for this model.

I just received my GT627-218US this week and am having a problem with the screen blanking out on me shortly after Windows logon. It seems like its related to the video driver. Just wondering if anyone else with this machine has had a similar problem?

I tried a system recovery from the provided image files and uninstalled the default NVidia driver using Safe Mode. Using Drive Sweeper, I cleaned up any lingering files. After that, restarting into Vista works and the system seems stable except that the display driver is listed as Standard VGA Adaptor. From here, I've tried installing the supplied driver from the MSI website but that resulted in a blank screen shortly after logon. I also repeated the process and installed DOX 142.46 and that also resulted in a blank screen. I'm thinking there is some kind of hardware issue but wanted to check in with other owners first. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Wipe everything and start from scratch. If still black screen, then probably hardware malfunction.

I did my undervolting, for those interested.
    6x-0.875
    7x-0.925
    8x-0.9375
    9x-0.95

The 9x used to be 1.05, so you see the difference. Temps are much cooler now. On 64bit for some reason it's a little hotter.(Added-I mean hotter then 32, but still much cooler, compared to without undervolting)
But the fan is still noisy. Even on lowest setting.

    9 idle? How?
6 idle, well... On 32 bit. I has stable 35. On this 64 bit, still not sure. My CPU keeps showing a lot of activity. I don't know whats happening in the background there, but, so far around 39.

I just went out for 20min, screensaver popped up. The temp was 37.

Hehe, well friding batteries is reccomended :) so its not unusual, them temps are very nice :)

When i refer to idle i mean just sat there from start up a couple of minutes, that should be fine, but your in the 30's with some cpu usage and that is very nice :)

    I may attempt that hehe.
