Congrats, palehorse. I want one also. Anyway, when it comes, tell me if the keyboard flex is fixed, since if there was a new batch for this model that was very recently released, you'll get it.

Will do... right now, I'm just trying to get all my software lined up for installation.

It would be nice to see the OP, or someone who knows, keep a running update of the fastest video drivers, BIOS versions, etc... right now, I'm trying to weed backwards through 81 pages to ensure I have the latest and greatest ready when it shows up... wish me luck!

Will those Realtek drivers work in Win7?

I already snagged the latest (185.85) Nvidia Notebook drivers for the video card for Win7.

    Thanks for the links!

EDIT: MSI's site doesnt appear to have ANY 64-bit drivers at all for this laptop... DOH! :(

Well, As I understand, you don't always need special 64 drivers.
I had more problems with audio on windows 7. It dodn't recognize headphones and mike. I think those from realtech fixed the headphones, but mike was still screwed up.

Does anyone happen to have a full list of working Windows 7 (64-bit) drivers for the GT627-218US?

I'm guessing that it's going to take a mixture of official MSI Vista drivers and 3rd-party drivers to get this thing working in Win7 RC1... any help with that would be much appreciated!

I've got exactly three days to get this thing ready to roll for my tour in Iraq... DOH!

The fact: COD4 run slower and hotter for me on W7. But that was for me and only for this game. But generally, W7 mobile drivers are not that good as W7 desktop drivers, I think. Vista sp2 made it slower and hotter for me, too.

    About undervolting:
Looks like 64 bit is supposed to be a little cooler then 32 on idle, but hotter when running stuff. It's hotter for me in general, even on idle.

I think W7 64 is cooler on idle by about 3C, for me anyway.

I am with the others that the right palm rest gets hot. It is quite irritating, I read how cool this thing was yet no mention of the palm rest. I guess it isn't that much of an issue if gaming with a mouse. Other than that, this laptop is sweet.

Oh and I scored 8800ish on 3dmark06 with win7 and drivers off of MSI's site, for the guy asking about gaming with win7.

I figured out why my 64 bit runs hotter and, probably, why W7 runs hotter too.

When I installed 64, it looks like it automatically sets Minimum processor state to 5%. So cpu always runs on minimum 5%. After I set it to 0%, my temps started to go below 35 sometimes again!

I'll try this on W7 and if it works, I way try to switch to W7 again =)

Added: well, it went to 38 again. I'll watch it for few more days.

Hey, I bought this machine a few days ago. Out of the box I booted to my vista 64 disc to install. Completely forgot about making restore discs first. 64 will install, then after I do setup, takes me to login screen for the first time. As soon as I login, it reboots and gets stuck on the Microsoft Corporation screen. The green bar goes forever until I reboot. When I go into repair console, it finds an error with the bcd, says it is missing and it can fix it. This doesn't work though. I tried through dos rebuilding the bcd, copying the whole boot folder from my desktop running the same os, and everything else I could think of to no avail. Any ideas?? I've fresh installed vista 4 times now and the same way each time. Is this a harddrive problem that it keeps getting corrupted, or maybe my copy of vista is bad, cd scratched? Any help is appreciated.

I'm not a pro in any sense and I don't know what I'm talking about, but If you don't find an answer, I'll consider returning it or trying to format everything before installing. Including that small back up partition. But, I guess it's too drastic, so plz don't listen to me or at least wait for other suggestions.

    Hi Everyone,

Just received this laptop, to replace my Dell e1705, I booted it with Win7RC x64 out of the box, and updated the rest of unfound drivers (mostly SD card related) out of the driver CD. It runs fairly well, I have just tried world of warcraft and it ran fairly well in 1680x1050 windowed mode everything maxed. Though kinda slow in Shattrah (a bit slower than my 8800GTS 512mb desktop). I did upgrade the nvidia drivers to latest from their site.

I don't have the flex keyboard problem people seem having, it was just a bit tough to get used to the smaller keyboard (since the numpad keys do make the keyboard layout smaller), but that's ok and I am used to it.

My main question, is that when the machine runs in battery, everything is slower, I disabled speed step in the bios, and it does not seem to make any difference. Do I need some sort of third party tool/driver to enable turbo mode ? I don't expect to play games on the battery, I just want to have the option of being able to play some game or some bluray in full mode on battery, even if it is for 20-30 minutes. Having the option > not having the option.

I ran Esset Nod AV (64bit) and it runs fairly well on it... overall very surprised by this laptop and how well it runs (I hope I did not jinx it)! :)

    Cheers,
    Houman

So I have used the laptop for couple of days, and I like it alot.

Though it gets rather hot to the right of the touchpad and the keys are a bit cumbersome to type on.

What did you take to protect the touchpad?

185.85/32bit drivers from nvidia don't work for me. They don't install. Don't even get the option. (I did a uninstall, then safe mode/driversweeper beforehand.)

Thank god for Dox, running 182.05.

I have not noticed this flex thing... I wonder if it is fixed on latest 218 versions.

I took me a little bit to get use to the laptop, but I am pretty happy overall.

Does anyone know if the area below the right side of the touchpad is the location for the HD or the video card ? I might upgrade the internal HD to an 80 GiG SSD down the line when SSD's are bit cheaper.

Are all necessary drivers available for an XP install? My SP3 XP disc doesn't work, I'm told it lacks the right sata drivers. Where would I find those, as well as other needed stuff?

If you guys want to install 185.85 go to laptopvideo2go dot com and download the driver and INF file just replace the INF file with the one downloaded and enjoy.
I Installed it already on mine 185.85 32bit for Windows XP.

I thought that I will have this problem with the gt627 before buying it. But now after using my laptop this is not a problem at all.

It depends on where you keep your mouse. I prefer keeping my mouse near to me. The vent is far from my hand so there is no air blowing on my hand.

If you tend to keep your hand far from you then you will face problem with the hot air and I won't suggest you to buy this laptop.

    Good luck

What type of laptop coolers do you guys recommend for this laptop ? I really would like to cool down the right hand side of the touchpad... wonder why it gets so warm/hot.

I am a lefty, so I don't have problem with that vent.

    lol

    Its already summer here

In the afternoon the outside temperature reaches 46C

After playing GTA IV for an hour my GPU temps maxed 71C. This is with Dox 182.05 on quality.(I just checked once)

Dox 185.85 gave me 81C max temp, so I uninstalled it.

At 71C temps the right palm rest just gets warm, not hot

BTW I am using windows 7 X64. With Vista X64 my GPU maxes at 77C with Dox 182.05 on Quality.

no , not really, i bought my laptop 917 euro and bought the cpu 170 euro, so it s not too expensive.actually i wanted to buy a quad core but i worried to have heat problems!
and now with this changes i can play GTA4 with 1280x800 and very high with 25-40 fps (without overclocking)

I have swapped my stock screen to a 1920x1200 screen its not hard to swap
you just need to reuse the brackets and reuse the same LVDS cable.
I bought my screen from Ebay.

I think it would work but you would need to make sure the heatsink fits/works and make sure the cooling is enough to sustain that extra heat.

After all you did just upgrade to p9500 hehe.

I just called MSI tech support to get 2 things answered. One the fastest CPU we can put in the GT627 and if it will support 8GB of ram.

    RAM:
They said it should support 8GB of ram but that the 4GB chips are so expensive that it is pointless to upgrade.

    CPU:
I was thinking about upgrading the P8600 in my GT627 to something faster. They said I can put anything in there no problem even the quad core series and that heating shouldn't be an issue but that it is a DIY project and warranty is void after that. I would not consider the Q series as an option my friend had a GX720 and put a Q9100 and I actually got a higher score on my windows 7 x64 (processor) experience than he did. His CPU experience was a 5.9 and mine was a 6.4 with everything factory on the GT627 except for the ram which I will explain below. That and price keep me in the core 2 duo market for now. I was going to put an E8135 / P9600 before the conversation I had with the MSI tech but now I am considering something faster maybe like a T9800 or X9100. I went on http://www.rkcomputer.net/rkcnotebooks/index.php?l=product_detail&p=74 to see what options they have for the GX620 which is the same but older barebone version of the GT627 with the 9600M chipset. They have everything up to the X9100 as an option. Any ideas or input? Oh and one other thing I switched the ram out of my GT627 to Corsair because frys was having a special to see if it would make a difference from the factory ram they have installed and I believe my windows experience went from a 5.9 to 6.4 on my (Memory) experience. Can anyone confirm they get a 5.9 with the factory ram because I don’t want to open this up again to see if I misread it.

Goes anyone have this with the blue-ray drive? Also, i have heard there is a button that overclocks the processor automatically. How well does that work? I am considering buying one of these, so does anyone know how good MSI's customer service is? And how would you rate this laptop?

Blu-Ray works well as long as you have the power cord plugged in. You can choose to have the "Turbo" button overclock the cpu to 15 or 20% in the bios. Haven't had to call MSI. I would definitely recommend it.

Hey guys I'm new to the forum :D I've been enjoying my laptop but dont know if this is a problem or not. I can't install new video drivers, ones from nvidia. I can only install the drivers from the site. Is this done on purpose or am I running into a problem?

Also if anyone by any chance plays FFXI on their laptop, I have a weird problem there too. I get frequent slowdowns(most of the time it doesnt even last 2 seconds) of low fps. It doesnt matter what I am doing, it will happen. The game run fines besides that, but it is pretty annoying to have a slowdown with such a beastly laptop. I want to blame the video card drivers but since I cant update them, I'm not sure.

I'm also pretty new to vista also.. is there anything you guys do as soon as you first boot up.. tweaking vista wise? Or SHOULD vista be running fine from the get-go? Since I played FFXI fine on other systems (xp) ofcourse I want to just blame vista.. but I hope it is a driver issue. Thanks for any help!

Edit: one more problem.. I also want to "force on" vsync for FFXI through the nvCP, but as soon as I close the window(I am hitting apply) the setting doesn't save. If I open again right after I close it, the settings will be reset. Also the general vsync force on still doesnt help FFXI in game. Maybe its just the drivers with the game.. FFXI is an old game, but I know people with vista run it just fine. I tried the changes to the XML files.

Well, can't answer all, but there is an issue with the driver directly from nvidia. You can use the one from MSI or you can go to laptopvideotogo.com and use the driver provided there.
