How upgradeable is the GPU? The GT628 is rumored to come with an Nvidia 160M GTS, so would it be feasible to just purchase the GT627 now and replace the 9800M GS with the 160M GTS later?

Might be but the cost would be high and really not worth it, there will not be that much more preformance..

    would cramming a 260M GT in there be stupid/possible, heat + power-wise?

I dont think its a bad idea :), i think maybe some more heat precautions may be neccesary (altho what does the 9800m gs run at?) and i think the power consumption should be fine.

Nice. I checked out the GPU upgrade guide ( http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=86864) which is quite discouraging. What are the limiting factors in the case of the GT627? How would I know if a GPU is compatible (size, etc.)?
I'm looking to buy a GT627 unfortunately right before the GT628 supposedly is out (need it before college) so I want to make sure I can do some aftermarket stuff to keep up.

Well res wise it super sharp viewing angels are great you could stand up and side to side and still see the images fine I'm very impressed.
brightness is not so bad could use more brightness but I use the NV control panel an increase the brightness contrast and gamma i also apply a little digital vibrance and looks great.

If you want I could load up some pictures.

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone that has posted on this forum and it is the reason that I will be ordering this computer (hopefully today).

I was wondering if anyone had a list of drivers that work the best with this computer that need to be installed. If someone could post them back it would be a great help.

    Thanks.

hi anand00x and sorry for the late answer, the heatsink was very easy to remove and i replaced the stock thermal paste with a ARCTIC SILVER 5 , but in your case i think that intel T series are heater and consume more than P series.

i ordered a wuxga screem like mark from ebay, and hope it will be easy change :)

the only problem that i had is that the inverter connector was short so i had to cut it and elongate it, it took 30min !! :(

i just tested GTA 4 in 1920x1200 and it was running between 19-37 fps

I installed a T9800 / (E8335) in my GT627 today. My scores jumped to 6.8 CPU (T9800) and 6.8 Ram (Corsair). The idle temp for the CPU's average around 44 C. Overclock numbers 3.394 GHZ at 16% overclock. I updated my bios to the newest ones available on the msimobile.com website. I lost the BIOS option to change the overclock percentages from 15 - 20%. Anyone notice this when they updated their bios?

I apologize for the images below. They were taken with my Iphone so they are a little blurry.

I want the old C-State (disable) option in my bios and the 20% overclock function. Unfortunately the new bios flash does not allow these options anymore. You are stuck at 15-16% overlcock and C-State is no longer there. For anyone who needs the files MSI just emailed me the 2 previous bios versions.

    A1651IMS_10T - Has C-State and 15/20% overclock options
    http://rapidshare.de/files/47503249/A1651IMS_10T.rar.html

A1651IMS_10U - Does not have the options
    http://rapidshare.de/files/47503276/A1651IMS_10U.rar.html

By the way for those thinking about upgrading their processors and decide to get an ES or higher end processor and you keep experiencing random BSOD you might want to disable C1 or C-State in our bios because of the following reason - "Some people will experience random crashes and bsod's. If C1E is enabled: this is a result of the cpu voltage being lowered @ idle. In some cases the cpu will not run @ idle speeds on the lowered voltage. This will cause it to error and crash the system." - I forgot the forum I found this on so to whomever I am quoting thanks.

I just disabled C-State and downgraded my bios to 10T from the most current available on msimobile.com. I activated the 20% overclock function in the bios and managed to push 3.511 GHZ + with a FSB of 1276 + (T9800 CPU). Max CPU Temp reached 86 C under very heavy stress. For a 15" laptop MSI did a great job designing the Heatsink.

Ahh these temps are great, and i've never heard of that cooler but its working wonders from what i see.

That t9800 is killing the p9500 at speeds of 3.5 :D :D and 86 is in the safe zone.

yes sure , with 3.5 Ghz my P9500 seems to me weak :D , but i think that will consume battery quickly with 35w TDP. but even though it very cool to have a laptop with 3.5 Ghz

Hmm i wouldnt say so no, my quad operates at 45w tdp, and it dies (in low brightness and power saver mode) in just under 3 hours :D

Although without a doubt p9500 is good, keep it as spares methinks, unless your selling :)

I'm sorry, "plain jane" is just an expression. It is actually a belkin that I picked up on clearance from walmart. It works well, although I have to place the laptop as far forward as it will go because of the feet on the gt627. If I don't it wiggles.

I was looking into the turbo memory option. I just ordered a 2GB card. I hear it is a little tedious to get it working on windows 7 x64 but when you do I hear it does wonders your normal application use and start up. Maybe even consider getting a SSD when prices drop. Outside of that I am still going to do the WUXGA swap. Any recommendations on Matte vs Glossy Screens? I hate taking this MSI outside there is a really bad glare with the factory glossy screen.

OK, so I have two questions here. I want to use my laptop for as long as possible (4 years possibly... ). I searched the Internet, but I didn't find any clear cut informations on how to maximize my battery life (the lifespan of my battery being defined as the period in which the battery completely discharge in three hours at the beginning to 20 minutes at the end)? My Dell 700m had a battery life of 20 minutes, approximately, at the end of its life (compare to 4-5 at his beginning), which is not practical at all. I don't want this from my gt627. Well, degradation is normal, but I want to minimize the degration as far as possible.

So, how to have a well-functionning battery for a long time? Any links to a good how-to? I read I had to discharge it every once in a while (three weeks - one month). Some says discharging it to 50% is enough, others says 20% and others says 0%. Which one? Any other things to do? A guy here mentionned keeping is battery in the fridge while not using it. Is it really a good way?

And, if I want to buy an extra one, in two years, what will be the best possibility? You know, where to buy it? Seems like nobody sells these batteries...

You don't need to discharge and cycle the battery. Lithium Ion does not need that nor does it suffer from the "memory effect". Heat is the main killer of the battery so to extend its life keep it from heat! If you are gaming with it, remove the battery. If you aren't going to use it for a while, remove the battery at around 50% and store it in the fridge (not the freezer). If you want to buy a new battery they can be purchased here.

    hi guys,

i just bought a MSI GT627 fro newegg last week and have so far been overwhelmingly pleased with its performance (though i havn't played any stressful games yet). But i am a little curious/worried about two aspects of my new computer.

    1) my computer came loaded "Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium" which i think is 32 bit but i dont know for sure since ive been using an out of date laptop for 4 years with XP on it uptill now. nonetheless, i shouldnt be able to to utilize the full 4 gb of ram (should be ~3.06 gb right? for a 32 bit OS) yet, when i right click My Computer and check the properties, it states 4.00 gb of ram present. anyone know what's up with that?

    2) my second and more concerning question is whether my tubo button is functioning or not. i havn't noticed any speed increase when turning on turbo mode. i also dont see any indication anywhere within the system (i.e. my computer -> properties , or device manager -> processors) that the speed of my processors is anything but 2.26 / 2.27 ghz.

is that just how turbo mode functions? it is on but i can't "tell".

anyhow im installing 3Dmark05 to run some performance tests with them off and on and hopefully ill see the difference but if anyone on here has any advice or at least can point me to a thread with some answers id be very appreciative.

Hey ggrick! Welcome to NBR man and grats on your purchase!!

First question, you are apserlutely correct, i know what its like with this 4 year old leap (done that recently :D ) but you are correct in saying that the 32bit OS will only recognise 3gb of ram unless its upgraded to a 64 bit operating system, do not worry, as long as properties is stating that there is 4gb of memory adressed, your ram is 100% functioning (the remainder of the ram is used to support hardware, such as your graphics processing unit.)

To help you with your second question, there is one easy step for you. I do not believe device manager detects the clocks from the PLL chip, rather just checks for the CPU hardware, in which case default is 2.26/2.27, to test this in real time, you need to download an application called CPU-Z, you can find this hear.

    http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php

Install it, and activate your turbo mode, one thing you will nice about your machine is that the clocks throttle, this can extend life time and battery lengh (when off AC) so to throttle up your clocks, click the battery at the bottom right, just once, and make sure high performance is selected, this now gives the CPU leeway to perform at full 100%.

The next tool i suggest you have (so that we can throttle your clocks up) is a tool named Wprime.

    http://www.wprime.net/

You can download it from the above. Once complete, set your power in high performance, and activate your turbo button.

Run CPU-Z and look at where it says CPU clock (i dont have it on the machine im currently on but when i go home, i will gladly take screenshots for you)

With CPU-Z open, open up Wprime, and when it completes the hardware scan, click Wprime1024.
Do not be allarmed, this simply pushes your CPU usage to 100% safely, and your MSI fan should kick in.

At his point you will want to be looking at CPU-Z, and there you should see it, your Turbo mode values should appear there :)

If you are a bit funny about temperatures and want to monitor them also, i can completely understand why, then download an application known as.

CPUID Hardware Monitor which can be found.
    http://www.cpuid.com/hwmonitor.php

I hope the instructions are clear enough (and you do not have to run the full 1024wprime test by the way, just check that your clocks are correct :) )

And anything else, just ask, again welcome to NBR.

I want to buy a mobile external portable hard drive (Western Digital) 320gb. In the specs, the seller states that I need :

Does this laptop have that? (I know I have three USB ports (three including the combine port)... but 500mA?)

I'm not sure how much mA the three USB ports output, but I think I know why you ask. I use several external hard disks that comes with dual usb connectors, but I use just one connector without any problems.

Hi guys! Just got my new GT627-218 and I love it! I'm in the process of switching everything over from my desktop, so I haven't played any real intense games yet, but I'm sure it will perform. Didn't notice any keyboard flex really, feels as solid as my brothers HP laptop. I love how this laptop looks, the brushed aluminum is really nice, just a lot of finger prints though.

Anyway, I plan to switch over to 64-bit Vista and possibly OC the GPU to similar stats as the GTS. Is there anything else a new GT627 owner should do? Any drivers that need to be updated? I've heard of collapsing a HDD partition? Anything else?

    Thanks everyone!

Anybody get a chance to install the turbo mini PCI-e memory in the GT627?

has anyone every found a more portable ac adaptor that works with this laptop. I mean i was hoping for some portability and this does pretty well (larger than i thought sigh) but carrying the brick sucks! I just want maybe a wrappable travel ac adaptor.

Some times ago, my Dell 700m's ac adaptor stop working two times in a year. Pissed after Dell's product, I bought an universal adapter from Kensington. It worked, and still works after one year (don't know how long will it last). It's universal, meaning it works on most computer. I tried it on my gt627-218US and it worked like a charm. However, I THINK that using such things will power your laptop very well, but I read it's better, for your battery, to use the official adapter, as a small difference in current output can result in lower performance from your battery.

    Potentially dumb question here..

I'm thinking about getting the -218 model with the blu-ray drive, which I know does burn DVDs, but I haven't been able to confirm whether or not it will burn dual-layer DVDs on top of the single-layer discs I'm sure it will burn.

Thanks for any insight anyone may have on this one...
