Is it possible to use a remote control to control windows media center on this thing? It's got the IR port in the front..

I have an older Windows Media Center remote control laying around and I tried it but no luck...

hmmm, can anyone recommend any successful nvidia 17x drivers that they are using with their 9800m GS ...i have the gt627-216 version and i know it came installed with some 17x driver and it was working fine . then i decided to upgrade and all sort of temp. and perf problems started appearing. i forgot the original driver version and ive tried downloading the driver files from the website, but the problems still exist...ive tried several drivers from Dox's optimized drivers but most of the problems are still there i feel...

I am not able to figure out how to clean install windows 7 x64 on my gt627. I reboot with the disc, deleted a partition and created a new one, then installed, the laptop restarted and I entered my user accounts and all the setting, lastly it finalized windows and then rebooted. After the reboot, I am stuck at starting windows screen.

some people suggested me to do a bios update.

    Any feedback?

If I should do a bios update, please guide me how to do it.

    thanks

For a bios update, download the "MSIHQ USB Bootable Tool and BIOS Helper".
It will do all the work...

    Been there, done that!

You have a bad MBR (Master Boot Record)

You don't need to upgrade your BIOS in order to fix this.

Just need to boot from your Windows 7 installation DVD and then get into recovery and then enter to the command prompt and finally type: bootsect.exe /nt60 all

    Reboot your machine and voila!

    Best regards,
    RayanMX

It've been a year since I bought this laptop. I was thinking about buying a new one. But gt627 still looks good. The new i5, i7 processors look nice, but video cards:
    Take a look here http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-9800M-GS.12932.0.html
According to that table of top videocards (at the right hand) 9800M GS is still on top of GeForce GT 240M, Mobility Radeon HD 5730 etc.
There are few cards that outperform it, but notebooks with those are much more expensive.

So, I decided to buy a new one the next year. USB 3.0 is gonna be on almost all laptops by that time.

Has anyone else developed a crack in the lower right corner of the lid, right around the hinge area? I saw someone selling a gt627 on this board with a similar issue so I was wondering.

I'm trying to get xoticpc to repair it, but we'll see. It is really bothering me, as I can't even conveniently close or open the laptop.

I've been trying to install Windows 7 Ultimate x64 but every time windows loads it gets stuck at "Loading Windows" where the windows animation is moving around. Has this ever happened to anyone else with a GT627?

THANK YOU. Flashing now, you're the best.

    EDIT: Flashed and working perfectly!

Someone should post a warning for lazy potheads like myself warning them that all of the GS to GTS files posted in the guides are for Asus lappys only.
Now off to Nibitor to make myself a GTS.

BTW, if tweak not only the clocks but the title of the card (from GS to GTS) will this cause errors?

Also, I did some checking today, and it seems that the GTX260 m over at mxm-upgrade.com will fit into the gt627 nicely. Does anyone know of someone successfully doing this mod? That card has 112 stream procs and 1gb gddr3. Only power would be a concern is my guess, as our boards arnt fitted with the extra power pins on the pcie slot.

    Anyhow, GG and GL

I think changing the title will be ok.
But I haven't done it so don't take my word.

If you're looking for a good upgrade, why not go for the alienware version of the ati 4850? It has been tested to work with our notebook.

I see that they are very close in performance (notebookcheck.com). What about the 5870? Because of the process shrink from the 4xxx series, the 5870m draws only 60 watts, which is the rated power draw of the 9800m GS.

Is there a P/N on the specific Alienware card that works? Or just a link to the successful transplant article.

I dont think the 5870 will work, not sure about the slot and the bios probably doesnt support it,

The 4850 will eat the 9800 for breakfast, so if you can get the 4850 1gb from alienware, thats worth it!

Is there a convenient breakdown of the bios options for the GT627? Mine shipped with some pretty cool options (15/20% OC, timings etc).

Which has the hidden options? I shipped my rig to MSI for a dead GPU and they shipped it back with the newest bios. Now I dont get 2.7 OC in Win7 64...

Bios versions 1.0T and 1.0P have the 20% OC option and the NB options (with ram timings and frequency).

Version 1.0P gave me a problem with the turbo button though, maybe because I use a T7300.
    So I use 1.0T.

    Here is 1.0P:
    http://download2.msi.com/files/downloads/bos_exe/1651_10p.zip

I've just attached 1.0T to this post. Also I have attached 1.0U which I don't know much about. I think I flashed it once and in the bios it said the notebook was a GX620 or something.

Now if you have an extreme CPU or one with an unlocked multi, I have a special bios that might let you change the multi and also the CPU VID. PM me for that.

Woo Hoo! Im running the 1.0P, seems to work great.

I did some pretty extensive 9800M GS overclocking yesterday, I thought I would share the results:

    System: MSI GT627-216US
    Test: 3dMark06, default settings.
Methodology: PC restarted between each run, each run is made with 3dmark06 as the first and only running application. Turbo mode is engaged and confirmed @ 2.7GHZ before the beginning of each test. Temps and clocks were checked with RivaTuner + Desktop Gadget. All bios modifications were made with NiBitor 5.7.

    Results:
Core Shadrs GDDR Vcore Score Temp
    625 - 1625 - 933 - 1.13v = 9993 @ 73c
    630 - 1625 - 933 - 1.13v = 9997 @ 73c
    630 - 1625 - 900 - 1.13v = 9915 @ 73c
    625 - 1600 - 866 - 1.11v = 9842 @ 73c
    625 - 1600 - 833 - 1.11v = 9750 @ 73c
    635 - 1625 - 800 - 1.12v = 9698 @ 73c
    625 - 1625 - 800 - 1.12v = 9655 @ 73c
    625 - 1575 - 800 - 1.12v = 9657 @ 72c
    625 - 1525 - 800 - 1.12v = 9588 @ 72c
    625 - 1475 - 800 - 1.12v = 9524 @ 72c
    625 - 1400 - 800 - 1.12v = 9383 @ 72c
    635 - 1325 - 800 - 1.12v = 9148 @ 71c

The list has the newest attempts at the top, oldest at the bottom. I ended up not being able to break 10k last night, which was really upsetting :p

The largest jump in performance came from upping the ram speed, which leads me to believe that the gddr3 they used in the 9800m GS is crud. The shaders provided the second best return, and the GPU last.
    Final stable tested speeds: 625 // 1625 // 933 // 1.13

Here is my final stable rom, and a copy of the MSI oem vbios file:

    OC'd ROM: http://www.mediafire.com/file/ulzz2tdmoy2/625-933.rom

    OEM ROM: http://www.mediafire.com/file/dnkmjnknhoz/OEM9800MSI.rom

Hmm you'l prob break 10k by either updating the drivers to something else or pushing the CPU that little bit more, but you've easily got 10k cracked bud.

Well, I didnt post the attempts that failed:
    630 - 1625 - 933 - 1.13v = Driver Crash
    625 - 1640 - 933 - 1.13v = Driver Crash
    625 - 1650 - 933 - 1.15v = Driver Crash
    625 - 1625 - 966 - 1.14v = Driver Crash

I dont think I can get much more out of it. Perhaps if I played around with the GDDR timings, I could get the ram to test at 966 or 1000, but Im not really ready to fry this thing yet. Maybe once I find + order a 4850 to swap in, Ill test this thing to the wall. For now though, Ill take a 40% increase in Starcraft 2 frames :-0

Before OC I would get 24-30 FPS at 1920x1080 with all settings maxed except shadows and unit portraits (Med / 2d respectively).

After OC I get 48-52 frames. Highly playable.

All of these numbers have Turbo on.

Well I have a p8400, if that tells you anything.
List of Intel Core 2 microprocessors - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

It looks like the main difference is the cache, yours having 6mb to the p8400's 3mb. That would account for the 10 watt increase in power draw. The p8400 is listed as a 25w part, while the t9400 is a 35w part. Unless that laptop has a better/different cooler, I would say you may see higher temps, due to the identical cooler having to dissipate 10w more heat under load.

If you ask me, it's not really hot. But you should still undervolt the CPU.

I wonder how your fan speed will be changing without a temp sensor?

Yeah, mine literally NEVER turn off. Always on somewhat. Are yours like that or do they turn off sometimes?

I should probably undervolt it. 1.15V at full load according to CPU-Z. Thank God that sensor still works. :p

The flex has grown on me. Probably because 99% of the time this laptop is sitting on a mediacenter connected to my 52" 1080P tv via HDMI. The one thing I would really like is bios control over the HDMI. I dont know why it wont boot to the external display...

And yeah, if you ever feel like your fans are not on, I would be worried :p

The one I'd be getting is P8600, and it supports it. So is it safe to assume that MSI doesn't lock that feature?

PS I can't see page 109. shows blank page.

Hmmmm... so my engineering sample T9400 seems to not want to install a 64 bit OS. Hangs at first startup of 64 bit 7 and BSODs in 64 bit Vista. Installed 32 bit 7 Ultimate and will run FurMark (74C) and Prime95 (-21C :D) fine, but still some BSODs at COMPLETELY random times. (still code 124).

I really hope the new CPU I'm getting (as in not an engineering sample) will fix this! :(

Well that is interesting, first time I have actually seen somebody with an ES CPU that is missing a feature, really an eye opener.

Thank you so much!! This worked for me too. Would anyone know what is the cause of this problem? I tried installing vista x64 and windows 7 x64 with the same result until I just saw this post.

Hi guys, what's the component on the right side of the palm rest? Mine is too hot for comfort. I have to place a thick cotton cloth so I won't feel the heat. HW monitor shows 38-40c on CPU, 55c on GPU, 45c on the HDD all on idle.

Also, what BIOS do you recommend? I want the one where I can swap the Fn and CTRL key functionalities. Thanks!
