I don't think the GS60 will handle the cooling of an 870M well. The 765M has a listed TDPs of 75W, and the GS70 did a horrible job with cooling that card. There's no way a modestly chopped down 680M is any easier to tame.

I dont need a 870m, 860m is more than enough for me, so i hope there is an option to choose between 860m/870m.

    Question...

...so if going with the 870M how much you guys think the 3K vs Full HD would impact battery life and performance?

The only thing I'm worried about with the GS60 is the price so far.

Is the 870M maxwell? Or just a rebranded 770M Kepler with higher clocks?

No chance in hell you can put in a 870M or a 880M inside a thin 15" like GS series. We are talking 90W-120W here. You can also notice that it have a 150W PSU. You wouldnt have the energy left to even drive the display.

That is one factor. Another is that it would make GT60 redundant because it offer actually offer 870M/880M and is not as stylish.

So unless MSI want to start fires around the world and kill their GT series, that chart have a horrible typo. What it should have listed is GTX 850M/860M which is the correct ones

Leaks showed the 870 is a GK104(680) with less ROPS,Bandwidth (only 192), its a Kepler, and as cloudfire said it is going to be hard to put it in a GS60, as its an extremely overclocked and hot card...You are better off with an 860 anyway, new architecture new laptop and ssd, I want the gs60 but now not april

I'm going to wait for reviews and more information, but putting an 870M in that thing if it's Kepler sounds like a poor idea.

I guess all will be revealed officially this week.

What's the likelihood that the 870m will actually be a Maxwell chip soldered directly onto the board?
It sucks that only the 3k screen is ips. :/ how good is the FHD screen that comes with it though, I wonder.

Will the gs70 have 3k screen? If so wont it be expensive? My budget is around 2000 dollars. (i live in Norway)

Pretty sure thats the Razer PRO, ie 17.3" and not 14".
It is a Kepler. A GTX 680M with less memory bandwidth.

$1699 for the model with 1080p display. Probably another $200 for the 3K display or something.

Ooooops my bad. You said GS70 and not GS60 :/

GS70 won`t come with 3K display. MSI said they would add 3K displays in the 17.3" notebooks when they are available in the market. I dont think any of the display makers have made any 3K 17.3" yet unfortunately.
    Only GS60 will have 3K.

Also I got the $1699 from GentechPC (US). Norway like the rest of the europe is expensive as hell compared :p

I dont really need a 3k screen, also it wont be so expensive here in Norway for me, because a company called "multicom" are doing a rebrand of the new model and sell without windows 8 i think and then it cost around 2000 dollars :D

Oh definitely going 3K screen here if it gets offered (will need to update my pre-order in Gentech). Though I doubt i'll be gaming at that kind of resolution.

I think if you game in 3k you will either get awful fps or you are going to play on ultra low settings or you could not even run the game.

From my pov the 8xxm models looks like a hotter rebrand, that might not benefit that much in gaming. Looking at the multicom.no prices i'm thinking about buying their gs70 rebrand, any advice on this?

From Norway? All i can say that it is just the same, beside the keyboard; i think it is only blue. Also if you order from multicom, dont forget to order windows with it, it dont come with it. Here is a review of the one on multicom http://www.dinside.no/924380/multicom-arya-ms-1771

Well i live in Denmark and the norwegian model is 2k dkk cheaper than its danish counterpart. I will only consider this if the 860m/870m proves to be running super hot, making the gs60/gs stealth run hot and loud.

The GS60 looks extremely promising. I wish MSI would remove the red gaming logo from the cover. I don't want to advertise a gaming machine during work meetings. Guess I could cover the logo with a sticker, but it would clash with the nice brushed finish of the cover.

actually I am more towards the nvidia side, but it seems odd to put such power of 880 and then stirp it all away by lengthening battery life and besides people have been trying to remove optimus now they have this battery cool boost to deal with, and I frankly think nvidia has earned that criticism after re-branding cards for the 3rd time, so did amd with the 7970 so there is no fan boysim here or there
and since you already have the optimum purchase (780) would probably not relate to the frustration but I like many have been waiting to buy since the 680 and me and everyone who waited have been let down...

Battery boost only apply when you know, you use the battery.... Not much use in gaming on battery since it will downclock the GPU automatically anyway to preserve power even if you are not using Optimus. A battery can`t power a gaming system on full speed.

I have no idea about the Lenovo or Gigabyte laptops. Try googling Lenovo Y50 and find out.
Only Alienware 17 and 18 got listed with GTX 860M but that might change to AW14 too later

Yes, unfortunately the 870M/880M are still Kepler this go-round (see my post HERE), and the notebook manufacturers like MSI, have to utilize the tech available to them at the time. Far be it for us, to second guess the wisdom in continuing Kepler. The manufacturer's primary goal primary is 'profits', their marketing is task to 'sell, sell, sell', and their heads, production, and bean-counters, have obviously assessed the risk. Sometimes they win in these decisions, sometime they lose, but overall, it's the marketplace that determines the measure of their success. Personally, I have no interest this new round of 8xx Keplers, Soon however, just on the horizon, the top mobile Maxwell GPU's will be available, and so-equipped MSI gaming flagships will be very appealing, indeed. Furthermore, MSI has been listening, and though it takes time for implementation, I anticipate some improvements we've requested. Stay tuned!

    :)

The revised Kepler is only slightly better so it is not worth the upgrade for existing owners, but if you are few years behind in technology with your notebook then it's okay since you will catch up like the rest.
