No other companies can either because no one makes the panels, MSI have stated if those are produced they will make a model using them, so until then you wont see a single beyond 1080p 17.3" notebook out there.

So is MSI forcing us to go with 3k panels for their 15" gaming notebooks?
-
Nope but at least it's an option, most will come 1080P.
-
What time today does the NDA get lifted?
-
well its probably going to be gmt which means if your in est it was at 9 am
if not then its either in 2 or 3 hours.
its nice that the 3k is an option, its not an option i would choose but its there none the less.
im hoping the 1080p screen will be an ips display but from the looks of it so far it doesn't seem to be so, from what i've read about the GS70 the panel had fairly decent viewing angles. -
I'm incredibly disappointed because it seems to get the 880m on a 15", you gotta go for the 3k option and it's $2299, $300 more than the previous gen minimum X80M option.

Or go for a barebones machine.
-
With a name like MrMoneybags you would think price has no boundaries .
-
I plan on keeping the money in my bags >.> lol
Are bare bones really going to be offered? -
they already have bare bones for the GT series i believe and there's also clevo which usually offers the cheapest barebones.

MSI COMPUTER 937-176322-052 MSI NB Barebone 937-176322-052 17.3inch Ci7 i5 32G 2.5 on AntaresPro.com
Doesn't come with a CPU, Ram, HD, or OS. Still would be hard pressed to beat this price. Pick up a 4700mq for 200$ on ebay, some decent ram that beats the el Cheapo ram that comes in the xotic system, and an install of your OS of choice. Can even use old ram and hard drive/ssd if you have any around. If you had some ram and a hard drive to throw in, you could have an i7 and the nvidia flagship 880m for around $1500? Can't beat that. -
What chipset does it have? Don't msi use HQ cpus which are soldered on the motherboard?
-
Here is the news about new cards

860M - Kepler or MaxwellOukami likes this. -
No man this is a barebones laptop. It is the basically the same thing as the expensive GT70. It uses Haswell either i5 or i7 cpus. The CPUs you need to use are the MQ or MX. Nothing is soldered.

so the point is, what gs60 will use for final product?
kepler or maxwell? -
Hmm....they deleted that news!?

The temps on GE60 are terrible, i'am not so sure in buying one of these.
-
It was tested out of the box with stock thermal paste. IC Diamond will be much better.

Ok,but GE60 with gtx765m with stock paste was around 70c with larger TDP.This is ridiculous, over 90c on cpu, and 90 on gpu. I hope this is just some fault in the factory while applying paste.
-
So the GS70 comes with a GTX860M but the PRO version with a GTX870M! MSI GS70 StealthPro 001 17 inch Gaming laptop with nVidia GTX870M - GenTech PC
...the GS60 also with a GTX860M, but still no PRO version listed, will that also have a GTX870M maybe? -
I think the GS60 Pro would be the 3k screen maybe? I doubt an 870M, I guess we might find out today.
-
Ken, its just that we expected extremely low temps with maxwell, even your factory review of the GT60 with GTX 680 showed cooler temps, is it just the paste's fault or is the small fan one of the main reasons?
-
Don't hold your breath depending on the physical layout. 37W i7's still approach 90 or higher under load. The smaller amount of surface area the hot spots are centralized in the harder it will be to minimize heat. That said it's still a 28nm process, but it all depends on what they've done to ratchet performance so much. I don't recall 750Ti reviews complaining about heat and it's the same model, I may be misremembering though.Cloudfire likes this.

How much lower would the temps be if you had IC Thermal paste instead of the stock paste?
-
Support.3@XOTIC PC Company Representative
We see 2-5C lower sometimes more. -
ThePerfectStorm Notebook Deity
2-5 lower would still be 85C+, and thats very hot for Maxwell (even if it is still 28nm).
-
Any videoes on the gs stealth? I can't find any. I want to know if it get's very hot and the price in Norway.
-
#182
Same here, so far the 8x0m models looks like they're oven-hot. Might look for an asus g750 if the 800m's flop (as well as the potential noise from the gs stealth.)
Also the release dates are different in europe (and skandinavia) as far as i know. I haven't found any mention of maxwell laptops on my usual websites.
Regards -
I would expect to see the 880m and 870m run hot because they are high strung keplar rebrands. Hopfully the maxwell 860m and below cards run nice and cool. If they do the 860m seems well suited for the GS60 and overall very attractive package.
-
In Norway the gs stealth comes 20.may. And are there much differnce between the 870m and the 860m? If the 860m runs cooler and isn't that differnent from 870m I will get the 860m for sure.

XoticPC says Kepler, anyone care to disagree? Please?!?

Where did you get that info? Might consider getting it from Norway if the price is right

They use to be pretty accurate, and problaly have had contact with msi since this is a remake, so it should be right. NOTE, this keyboard is norwegian and I think it only has blue light, so a little con there. -
Disagree. Im guessing kepler 860's will only be used in notebooks that also offer the 870 and/or 880. In thinner notebooks like the y50 and gs60 where cooling is more challenging, it makes alot of sence to use a maxwell design, and I hope and think they will.
If they dont, im not buying it. Keeping my fingers crossed. -

Kepler 860m cards should be restricted to mxm based machines.
-
Norsk er nu ikke så svært, man er vel Dansker

Might not get that then, i am having second thoughts about slim laptops. Might go with a desktop replacement (780m/880m) and an ultrabook/tablet on the side. Depends on the price. -

The 860M is Maxwell, codenamed GM107.
This information is all over the internet, lol. -
Sorry but you are wrong. They are 2 versions of 860M, one based on Kepler and another based on Maxwell:

Yes, both GK104 and GM107 GPU's are used in production of the GTX-860M..... and the same is reported by other sources, such as NotebookCheck, WCCF Tech, etc. That said, I can see where 2 variants of the same card could be confusing to consumers, and some may even feel misled, if not receiving the GPU they expected. As such, it would probably be a good idea for manufacturers, and resellers, to specify which GPU customers can expect. Personally, I'd be a little miffed if my notebook sported a Kepler, when I was expecting a Maxwell. Though performance between the two should be similar, the newer Maxwell core is more power efficient, is reported to provide significant OC headroom, should be less prone to throttling, and runs cooler.
-
I see MSI uses GM107 on their GE Apache series which is the Maxwell, GS60/GS70 should be the same:
Pretty sure it's the paste job. temperature on the previous GE60 with GTX765M has similar CPU temperature, the 860M seem runs hotter than the GTX765M. I can re-paste with IC Diamond see if it will run cooler. I should have time to test it later.
We are still waiting for the shipment. -

Hi Ken,
I just watch the video, and yes, the temps look a bit toasty. Like the CPU, it looks like the Maxwell GPU is integrated with the MB as well. It will be interesting to see if ICD is beneficial here.
Thanks for the great videos!
-
Are we sure GPU-Z database is able to differentiate 860M Maxwell and Kepler ?
Maybe GPU-Z provides wrong info (often the case with new GPUs) and you are running Kepler, not Maxwell, explaining why the temp is so high...
You should run a CUDA test to see what version is supported. If it's sm_50 then it's Maxwell. Lower version and it's Kepler
COOL! New MSI models available for pre-order!
