msi gt80/80s owners. with this promise company may have learned their lesson and would likely never promise a similar one again.. we can almost guaranteed to say good bye to future upgradable laptops lol. hope AMD makes a return..

No... I think that The whole computer industry is looking at this situation as what not to do, however I believe that portable upgradable gaming and regular laptops are a thing of the future. everything having to do with computers is getting smaller that will mean that conventional desktops will eventually cease to exist. Gamers want to be mobile now and alwase have just the Technology wasn't there yet but we are getting much closer to making laptops completely upgradable, when that happens no one will buy desktops any more. docking stations with multiple monitors will come back. Gamers will start undocking their laptops and take them with them the same maybe with Xbox and PlayStation.

however statistic wise its the opposite. back with ivy and 1st gen haswell mobile we still had socketed CPU and usually the higher end ones with bigger display has MXM. nowadays only clevo has LGA CPU and MXM GPUs but thats only a single laptop type out of their line up. MSI on the other hand has MXM GPUs and soldered CPU, dont even mention the rest, everything is soldered, where is the upgradable laptop in that lol

That's why I'm thinking my next pc will be desktop and not a laptop. Easier maintenance, less noise, can upgrade single components and it's cheaper.

Some of the suggestions in this thread about what is "fair"... you think MSI is gonna give you a new laptop for free... more likely you gonna get a free one way ticket to the loony bin.

My bet is they'll offer a rebate on your next MSI purchase. Maybe 10% of rrp if you're lucky as thats what seems to be the going rate in the courts for these kinds of things (GTX970 owners are getting about 8% for the gimped 1/8th VRAM and missing 1/8th ROPs). It's what I'd do if I were MSI in order to minimise the cost and maximise the *perception* of value. After all there is nothing actually wrong with your laptops. GT80S/980SLI power supply aside they operate as specified? This is not a defective product based claim. Its a false advertising/misrepresentation based claim. One of a number of "promises" to induce the sale. You can't just say "oh I wouldn't have bought it based on this one lie you told so give me my entire purchase money back even though I've used it for a week/month/year"

With how slow MSI are being i think my next laptop is going to be a eurocom laptop at least that way the CPU and GPU are up-gradable. MSI seems to be so slow they more then likely waiting for us to forget about the trade program.

You bet we can as our laptops lack one of their key features. And it's not really our problem that after a week/month/year of use it turned out that we wouldn't be able to upgrade our laptops' GPUs.
Also, afaik, you could return GTX970 for a full refund and you'd get 8% if you kept it. So it's a different story.
By the way, do you own GT72/80 or you just came here to piss the owners off?

First of all that's just my opinion although it is shared by others including LTT. Soldering is an issue. what needs to happen is the industry has to agree on a standard laptop (layout) pin counts, connectors, power ect. And all the components have to be small so some reingeneering has to be done. So that all parts to the laptop can be interchangeable and a barebones system can be bought and customized by the end user. Forget about MXM and all that, standardize all cards so that only the chips are different. Example: Ram use to be soldered and amount of RAM was set, now the amount of RAM you can have in your laptop is only limited by the CPU and we have many brands to choose from. We have came from 4gig to 64gig of RAM in a short time and the chips themselves have gotten smaller. I'm just predicting this will continue.

If MSI doesn't offer us the MXM upgrade that they advertised for the GT72 I purchased, then I will not be purchasing any more MSI products. Also I will be advising everyone to AVOID MSI at all costs, and DO NOT purchase any MSI products.

WARNING: DO NOT BUY FROM MSI !!!!!!!

I think what the problem for GT72 owners is that the market for their laptops is high enough that they'd be upside-down if they put more than ~$300 [970m>1060/980m>1070] and that is before you do the apples-to-apples comparison of features the new ones lack that any new features don't make up for.

GT80 owners are just terribly upside-down compared to what the market bears, so they don't have much of an argument beyond MSI is in the wrong, which being very true is a good argument.

...but GT72 owners have MSI dead to rights 9-ways to Sunday. MSI can't ask for very much in returns/exchanges with GT72 owners.

As far as I'm concerned, I'd rather just settle this quickly with a $250-$300 check from MSI in restitution for their screw-up and keep my GT72 w/980m & W8.1.

thats the thing, they'll eventually move away from upgradable cpu/gpu and simply solder everything. since other competitors are doing the same we can do nothing. not buying from msi but you'd end up buying from other venders who provides no upgrade what so ever. its a really sad trend tbh.

clevo on the other hand offer socketed parts but because they are trying to save money, look at their cooling system.. can't even cool the hardware they house.

Yea, I think I will put my money into building an expensive desktop then buy a $1000 to $1500 laptop like a ROG that I can still game a little on the go and except the performance loss. neither will have any MSI parts in it if I can help it if MSI screws us. If they treat us well I may continue with high end laptops from MSI, I have to admit they are good.

I know this fact very well, my first PC was a 1989 IBM ... but that does not mean I do not find this fact ridiculous, at times.
my notebook is much more powerful and better in every aspect compared to new GT72VR .... nevertheless, since this one is "new" ... then mine worth less, lol. (sad sarcasm)

if u still have that super old school PC it could be worth quite a bit lol.
gt80s, are you only selling it because of the GPUs not upgradable? two 980 is so powerful already unless u wish to run on external monitors x3 with all 4k lol.

They are still selling the GT80S with the 980/70 GPU in it and people will still buy it the difference is they know they can't upgrade it and able to make a discussion to buy with that information unlike us. Another reason I think we will get a even exchange, in the big picture MSI will not loose that much revenue.

@bird2132 i have got nothing in reply from MSI i have done everything they have asked and still nothing not even an confirmation of them getting either the e-mails or the conversation on here. So by looks of it MSI have abandoned us customers. They haven't replied even in the threads recently either. So i am taking that as a Middle finger to us customers really. Which is why i have started to not recommend MSI products until something is sorted out with this current mess they have gotten themselves in.

For those that wonder this is the message i got.

    Hi,

if you are USA model owner, please join directly the USA program:

    Dear Loyal Gamers,

We have heard and read each and every one of your post in the past weeks and are taking this issue very seriously with our engineering teams and external partners. As a GT owner, I also made the decision to purchase these laptops for its innovative MXM format hoping to extend the life of my laptop so we feel your frustration.

As everyone knows, the performance of the latest GeForce® GTX 1080/1070/1060 chips has jumped significantly over the last generation. This could not have been possible without redesigning the motherboard, modifying power outputs, thermals and other components in order to utilize the full performance of Pascal chips. MSI has been working internally and with NVIDIA to find a suitable upgrade solution in order to meet the demand of GPU upgrade without causing any disruption to your experience.

In order to keep our original promise of upgradeable GPU’s, MSI will be offering a trade-in program for those who currently have GT72/GT80 models with GTX 800 and 900 series graphics inside to new GT72/GT83 with GTX 10-series packed with our latest gaming features.

For the owners of mentioned products, you can download and fill out the attached form.
Please send the form to: [email protected] before Oct. 31st 2016

MSI will send the specifics of this trade-in program soon.

Please note that this program is available in USA only.

    We appreciate all your feedback.

ooh come on guys, this is the worst excuse ever seen to buy a single-gpu pc ... all the latest games and those that are worth playing support SLI already for some years now ... and those few who do not support it is because they are old and should be fine on a 880M lol
dont be shy, go SLI ;)

of course it is the same phrase for all, I presume:

    "Dear customer

Thanks for the info, we will transfer it to local representative and hopefully they will contact you soon.
    Thanks again for supporting MSI"

GT72 trade in for new the GT72VR is very problematic as it has been noted that the new GT72VR has been downgraded in many areas, not the least of which is no 1080 option, no option for i7 6820 processor and removal for 3 M.2 slots. I do not see a 4K option either.

I hope this is not the case that GT72 for GT72VR is the only option; this would be unacceptable, IMO. GT73VR would be the logical choice for a trade in option.

One moment, googling MSI Executive Board...

    One second...

    Ahah! Found it!

Actually more like 2-Year-olds! Complete and utter incompetence!

I am little upset now (too) as I have asked for the GT72VR 1060 (instead of 1070 which is too expensive for me at the moment) and MSI rejected.

    Damn :(

I ask now for reason of that i mean ... that really is not that nice.

u should be glad msi still offer the trade in and is still offering MXM socketed GPUs. look at ASUS and alienware on the other hand they gone full razor blade style along with gigabyte.
