Okay. At first I was thinking about that trade-in. But 1 month is impossible for me without laptop. It's my last year in university. And I need laptop for my thesis in electronics engineering. And yes I need pretty good laptop to work with image processing. Now I'm really thinking next gaming machine will be desktop. And guess what? There will not be a single computer component from MSI.

Anyone here know what the trade in options are for a gt80s?
We need an excel sheet with a different page for each country listing the different options/prices each models upgrade....and listing inconsistencies within each country....
Each time it is updated a link should be added to the post the data was taken from...
we can also use currency conversion too
to compare relative prices in different countries

Same here.. it's a pro laptop, can't stay a month without it, well really MSI... the funny thing is the GT72VR/ GT73 may not be upgradable too ! why bother using MXM ?MiSJAH likes this.

So let me get this right in my head, They get you to send out your laptop for inspection however your new laptop doesn't arrive till a month + after. MSI sorry but your taking the micheal big time. The respect you had from me as a company is now gone i can not and will not recommend any product you make to anyone. @MSI Natalie i am still awaiting a reply from my last e-mail i need details please.

MSI,
i would understand "inspecting" to make sure the computer turns on and functions. I do not understand a month long "inspection" for physical damage. If it doesn't turn on, I could see offers to use ACD and forgo repairs and go straight to the upgrade. If it turns on then it should be considered upgrade-able. -

I received a call from Henery at MSI in California regarding my BBB complaint. He basically told me that the offers will be coming out within the next few days, end of next week by the latest. He did not have any other information or specifics. My bbb complaint stated that I would accept an even swap of my ssd's and ram and would only accept the cost of the video card upgrade. Going to bed now I will post further information when I get it.

The BBB do indeed make the vendors sit up and pay attention to customer complaints filed with the BBB.
That's why post #1 of this thread includes the Better Business Bureau complaint filing information.
If you haven't filed a complaint with the BBB yet, and are unhappy now or when the trade-in offer arrives for the US, file your complaint and required resolution for MSI to answer - with the BBB mediating.
Here is the info from Post #1 again for your convenience:
The BBB (Better Business Bureau) in the US is one of the avenues we can use to encourage MSI to follow through.
The Better Business Bureau has an entry for MSI Computer us.msi.com , and currently has an A+ rating.

Here is an example of a recent complaint that MSI resolved, with the acceptance by the person that filed the complaint:

Complaint
MSI refuses to honor the mail-in rebate offer, or a full refund for products with falsely advertised rebate conditions.
I bought three MSI graphics cards (R9 390) that have an applicable mail-in rebate offer. The offer clearly states that it's limited to 10 rebates per offer per household. However, MSI only processed one and is refusing to honor the other two, claiming that the offer is limited to 1 rebate per type of product, which is not indicated anywhere in the offer. I then asked that I want to return the two cards for full refund due to breach of the terms of sale, and MSI customer rep (***** *********) refuses to do so or to escalate the issue further.
Desired Settlement
Either process the mail-in rebate for the remaining products, as advertised, or accept returns for a full refund.
Business Response
Have spoken with customer and though we stand by our rebate policy and in the terms and conditions it is clearly stated what terms are. But as a courtesy and to provide a positive outcome to this complaint we will honor the rebate for the other two.
Thank you,
Consumer Response
(The consumer indicated he/she ACCEPTED the response from the business.)
I received a call shortly after I submitted the complaint, and was told that the rebates will be processed. Didn't know how to cancel the complaint. I haven't received the rebates yet, but assume they will arrive shortly. Thank you.

At least in the US a good rating with the BBB is a coveted award, well worth resolving issues filed with the BBB.
Maybe if every owner in the US files a BBB investigation MSI will feel motivated to respond.
File a BBB complaint quoting the MSI Support response to our promised MXM GPU upgrade inquires about the upgrade, showing MSI is telling us to "buy a new laptop instead" (paraphrased - use your actual response from MSI in the complaint).
MSI will feel obligated to respond to the BBB with a more favorable answer, like "the upgrade kits are in progress", and then the BBB can track MSI's progress through to delivery of the upgrades.

MSI need to note that some users are power users that game as well so time without said MSI laptop is really not on. It should be a four day turn around max from old laptop getting to them and new laptop getting to end user.

Hi, some guys within my country (germany) had arround 1 month (!!!!) from sending in their device to poland and accepting tradein to receive their new GT73VR or GT72VR directly from oversea (i guess upon shipping time).
Other guys had a nice retailer who accepted the item back, other ones still thinking about and waiting for better or customized MSI offers but i guess that won´t happen and if it happens you´re bound to the deal with MSI and (as in my case) only ONE option (Notebook) which was my major complaint in this deal, no other MSI portfolio notebook was a option (alike 1060 which is enough for me).
I´ve sold mine via ebay and received more $ than i would get from MSI, and also (my most win) i have free choice now, as MSI just offered me the GT72VR 1070 which was not an option (as i don´t have the cash now "over" for this in my pocket, it´s Q4 and x-mas is comming and not expected this trouble now).
Those is picked up from discussions in official MSI forum in my country. Please note that "couple of guys" means 4 or 5 peopoles in SUM so .. you know? I´m not wondering that MSI will have those s**t fixed tradein options as there´s no pressure from customer side here, i also guess a lot of GTxx owners simply does not yet have this on screen as theres currently no need for upgrade, and it´s not visible cause almost no techsite is reporting or highlighting this (and if the affected GT72/80 owners wanna upgrade GPU later ... they will definitely get in rage). And yes I was wrong in postings before where i´ve said "let them time to react", sorry about this.
This makes me wondering so i´m not 100% sure if notebookcheck.com for example is not reporting this (in focus of trust their reviews and stuff, you know?).
Hm, just my few words: maybe it´s different in other countries (or in case you can pay any ombudsman or whatever to start a "fight") but as hard it sounds, I guess it´s time to handle pretty soon, also from MSI side but i hope - but guess that will not happen. Please keep in mind that "private sales prices" for GTX 9xxM machines will not raise
And please don´t understand me wrong, i´m upset now that i will definitely not choose a MSI as replacement, it´s pretty hard to find a good manufacturer, as the hardware and layout itself was outstanding for the price those days (out of my personal view) i love their notebook lineup and steelseries and stuff, but this one thing here .. is just almost a nope then i can buy any 3p in future
Regards

He was referring to Microsoft Minesweeper, in some countries it was censored and renamed, literally, Flowery Field/Meadow, lol (the original censored name here was Minefield)
To me it was said that the upgrade even from 1070 to 1080 isnt supported... the first use 2x230 W, the second 2x330.
It was also proposed the DHL expedition organized by MSI, for my old pc ... at a cost of 15 euro. I do not know if at Nospecial MSI UK has offered free of charge.
And I confirm the waiting month. If I accept the trade and ship now...the new notebook will be delivered to me "later this month".DukeCLR, mason2smart, hmscott and 1 other person like this. -
Wow, that now makes sense, thanks
MSI didn't support upgrading between 970m/980m in the previous generation either.
For those and the 1080 it would take more than a MXM board swap to upgrade. A new heatspreader and heat pipes assembly would be needed, that's why MSI doesn't support those upgrades between same generation GPU's.
And, MSI never promised those upgrades, but MSI did promise 2 generations of MXM GPU Upgrades, and many aren't going to go with the trade-in, so MSI is still going to have to offer MXM GPU upgrades in the future for the GT72/GT80.
IDK why MSI thinks these trade-in's requiring far more from us than a purchase of MXM GPU's is acceptable, especially because it's now been PROVEN that Pascal MXM upgrades can be made.
It looks like some MSI regions are paying for the shipping in both directions, which MSI should - no more out of pocket expense to the owner.
We are seeing varying amounts of round trip time, but a whole month sounds excessive. MSI should be able to turn these around in 1 week, not 4.
Some regions are requiring the owner send in their laptop for inspection before quoting the cost, which is wrong as well.
The owner would have sent in their laptop for the MXM GPU upgrade, and it would have been upgraded for the same cost no matter how "pretty" or complete the owners laptop was.
It should be the same for the trade-in. If it boots and functions, the cosmetics shouldn't matter.DukeCLR, SAiLO, mason2smart and 1 other person like this. -

in this case i should probably aim for the highest level to ensure future upgrade-ability to other desktop chips... Since i have 980m's in my gt80s, I should be able to go to the new gt83 1080 sli?
@pat@XOTICPC
How will upgrades work with my laptop as it seems I would probably loose all of my "customizations" if it is upgraded. Can you guys swap the laptop for the Gt83 when I do the upgrade or does it have to go through MSI? If I don't do the upgrade, can you guys get me some sort of deal where I can trade in my current laptop for a 1080 series laptop?

yes but then we would complain there are issues like too much heat, not full upgrade potential, etc. and they would still have unhappy customers...hmscott likes this. -
Don't buy into or continue to spread the MSI BS, our upgraded laptops would put out the same thermal and noise levels after upgrading to the new components as the new GT73VR and GT83VR that come with the upgraded components.
No, they would provide upgraded thermal components, just like the 980m/970m upgrades did. Upgraded heatplate / heat spreader, heat-pipes to heat exchanger come as part of GPU upgrades - they usually run hotter.
There is enough physical space to take the upgraded cooling components for the 970m/980m to 1070 SLI.
The 980 to 1080 SLI will require a new plastic case bottom to fit the new thermal components, but that's also been done before on other laptops.
The new power supply + duplexer to handle the additional power, and the ECU changes are all doable too.
Will it all run hotter and have louder fan noise, just like the new GT73VR and GT83VR, of course, the upgrade components were fitted into them the same as we can have them fitted into our laptops.
If MSI wants to make it easier on themselves by swapping us already upgraded chassis / computers with the upgraded components that's up to them.
But we only pay for the MXM GPU upgrade, not the new computers, and we get to keep our original GPU's to sell and defray the cost of the upgrade.
That's what we were promised in writing, verbally and visually in video's and that's what everyone has in mind from the start.
That's not what MSI is offering, at least cost wise it's too much, and since some don't get to keep their original stock RAM / Storage level, and all of us don't get to keep our original GPU's to sell, it's really costing way too much for these "trade-in's", at least as we have seen so far.Last edited: Oct 6, 2016RandomID and mason2smart like this. -
The 980m wasn't always the top in the GT80 line, the 980 SLI was.
I would guess that MSI could offer both top of the line models the opportunity to upgrade to a 1080/1070 SLI in the GT83VR/GT73VR line.
The cost will vary according to the trade-in, 980m SLI vs 980 SLI, as there was about $1000 plus/minus difference in price between them, $3500 vs $4500 more or less. -
mason2smart Notebook Virtuoso
yea but doing this could cost them MORE than providing us with upgrades. That and they can't charge as much lol
notice the GT83 does not list 3gb/s speeds for pcie hdd's????
If MSI is such a large company then why can't they roll out the upgrades in a proper and timely fashion?
https://us.msi.com/news/detail/4DbA...j0vfNRMjaNGOPLnWl9ch0X_irwSOx_txBi0NQUz-v5Q~~ -
mason2smart Notebook Virtuoso
shouldn't cost that much since part of the difference was the hdd's and ram we would have been *forced* to buy

Tough Noogies MSI, you made the promise for 2 generations of MXM GPU upgrades for the GT72/GT80 laptops. So payup time is nigh
With a faster - more expensive - M.2 SSD it will likely be as fast as the GT80S Skylake with M.2 PCIE NVME, but maybe not...?
That's why we are all here complaining about MSI throwing the problem into our laps, and charging us more for the pleasure.
That's why MSI needs to suck it up and provide us the upgrades, or trade-ins, costing no more than the market difference between the GPU's.
It's the right thing to do MSI, please follow through on your promises.MiSJAH likes this. -
