Question regarding hardware. Skylake runs total 20 PCI lanes, correct? Do the 1080s on the 83vr run 8x or 16x? If I wanted to run RAID 0 samsung 960's and 1080s, what do the cards run at? Is it worth waiting for kaby which (ive heard) will have more PCI lanes? Thanks.

Reps would only get unnecessarily attacked. They do participate here and are helping (I am working with them relaying all new users that ask for the program on their respective countries) and they do send info to HQ, but it is best for them to only post when they have concise and definitive information, otherwise it goes wrong.
I believe GT83 does run on 8x for each GPU.
My take is that most of the older stuff is going to be used as repair spare parts. newer stuff can be used to replace still current notebooks on the market. Other parts can be re-used as raw materials.
They can probably resell stuff that is not too old and in good shape, refurbish them.
Doesn't really matter. They don't need our old devices. You can completely opt out of any upgrade program, sell your laptop on your own, get a different one. For all we know, they end up just piling them in a storage room in the shape of their logo.Last edited by a moderator: Dec 13, 2016Dannemand, ALLurGroceries and hmscott like this. -
Unnecessarily? Well as a representative of a company that has misled their customers, then lied when announcing a solution to the issue. As a representative you are the customer facing employee of the business. I worked in tech sales, if there was an issue with a product or service we bore that as representatives, allowing a customer to speak for us would be considered unprofessional.
-
Unnecessarily for the rules and order of this forum. No matter the cause, rudeness and angry behaviour is not needed in order to argue or present a case or to discuss any subject.
Not all owners will be able to conduct themselves and instead of being able to help, would end up stirring users.
Community managers do know when it is best to help without causing a ruckus, and to be honest as a moderator, it would be very difficult to do my job if everyone suddenly flipped. I am impartial and my job is to help have a positive environment, helping ensure forum rules and behavior.
Some users just take current issues to a personal extent that would not allow their case.

There are 16 lanes directly to the CPU and 20 to the PCH, which is connected to the CPU via DMI 3.0 @3.93GB/s. The 16 CPU lanes are taken by the GPUs, and the rest are dedicated to all other I/O.

Hello again Gents, I have received my e-mail!
Check it out below, they've added some additional details I haven't seen in other exchanges between users here.
(Edit: The additional 'details' do not pertain to price or upgrade options, just some disclaimers and notes provided by MSI.)
(Sorry, I won't be responding to that previous thread, seemed a bit petty to keep going back and forth about nothing really.. Wasn't really providing us any value as a community of concerned users)

That is just the generic email most of us have received already. Just updated a little versus the one i originally got back on 10/14hmscott likes this.
-
Ok.. Well, the 'updated a little' was what I was noting as there are a few disclaimers and additional comments made here that I did not see before. -- I said I would inform others of my exchange process, no need to be a killjoy.
One particular note that I was curious about:
"However, the upgrade cost may increase if you wait too long and our current models are discontinued for newer models that may be of higher in price." -- "You may choose to skip the current GTX 10 series trade-in program and wait for the GTX 11 series trade-in program, but do so at your own discretion because we will not know of any details about the GTX 11 series trade-in program until the GTX 11 series GPUs are actually released."
Also, I'll be curious to dive into this:
"
The inspection process is mainly to check that all OEM parts are present and functional. Normal wear-and-tear cosmetic damages of the laptop will not negatively impact the evaluation. If there are missing parts, you will be subjected to the retail charge of the missing parts.
Please remember to includes all of the Laptop Original OEM parts. Such as SSD, Ram, Hard drive, cables, etc. Any missing parts will be subject to a full retail price charge. Any OEM defects will not be subject for charge due to warranty coverage."Last edited: Dec 10, 2016hmscott likes this. -
So they are going to devalue the trade-in's as the GT72 and GT80 line age, which also clearly indicates that we are not paying the cost of a GPU upgrade, since the age the machine would have zero bearing on buying only a GPU upgrade.
They really need to go through all of the material they have released and specify EXACTLY what they mean. The email clearly states, "1. Each upgrade cost is the same as if you were to only upgrade the GPU."Last edited: Dec 10, 2016 -
FedEx delivered my GT73 this morning rather than Monday. So far I'm really impressed, it benches within 10% of my desktop 6700k/GTX 1080. And I'm especially glad I got rid of that furnace that was Haswell. I realize the trade in program isn't what a lot of you are looking for and I hope you're all able to get MSI to work with you to your satisfaction.
Thanks a lot to all the members that started this thread and got the ball rolling with MSI to get this program started, I really appreciate it!!!ryzeki likes this. -
What laptop do you have at present?
If it's a GT72, I'd reply asking MSI why they are offering the GT72VR as an upgrade when it has fewer physical features than your existing notebook. Than explain that you would consider paying the upgrade price for the GT72VR w/GTX 1070 to upgrade to a laptop with the same physical feature set, ie, the GT73VR w/GTX 1070. After all MSI's upgrade program said that the upgrade woulkd cost no more than solely upgrading the GPU, and the new machine would match the existing components/features of your original machine (ie, mux and raid).briedfox likes this. -
Actually, they just need to do as the stated, provide this at the cost of the GPU upgrade. Not try and go back on what they said. (We know how that turned out last time).briedfox likes this.
-
this is most likely why they have not gotten back to me yet because when i got the first reply i specifically asked those questions. Exactly how do they think that the GT72VR is comparable to the GT72s. The answer is it is not and why should i have pay more to get the same features that my current laptop has. K cpu (higher clock rate also) more than one M.2 slot and the mux switch (which for me is not as important as the other two )

I want to upgrade from my GT72 2QE, i7-4720HQ - 8GB DDR3 1600Mhz - GTX 980M - 128GB SuperRAID option + 1000GB HDD to a GT73VR with I7 - 8GB RAM - GTX 1070 - 128GB SSD raid option - 1TB HDD for the cost of the upgrade - $700 (£560).

2 important distinct updates to answer questions posed by NBR Owners
1) Kabylake update coming soon, so the trade-in charts will change, some models won't be available when that happens, new models will replace them.
It sounds like MSI USA Trade-in Team is trying to suggest pricing for the new models will go up... probably a good hint to take to heart.
2) The inspection is basically to make sure all the original parts are there, or an equivalent in size/spec. You don't need to worry if something failed along the way - you probably could / should have had it repaired under warranty already - but the trade-in lets you do it "all in one shot".
No extra charges unless you pulled an original component, sold it, replaced it with something else and want to keep it for some reason.
You need to weigh the cost of the original part against your new one and decide which to do - keep the old better part(s) and get charged for the missing original parts, or send in the old better parts with the laptop and get new ones as part of the new laptop.
Thanks for pointing out the detail changes
I don't recall someone with a re-marketed GT model going in for a trade-in.
When you submitted the trade-in form, did you put the MSI name/model or the Cyberpower one?
You might want to ask specifically about the support for trade-in of a Cyberpower version of the MSI GT80, before you spend $ on shipping.
MSI should just accept it as is - stock vs as was shipped to you - with customizations / upgrades.
One thing I did verify, MSI won't trade the MSI whitebox 16L13 as part of the trade-in program.
Please let us know how it works out

Still no feedback about any of the issues I've raised that affect MSI users in the USA, or are you now only asking MSI questions that are pro MSI?
@hmscott if you have any integrity put forwards the points others and I have raised about the cost of the trade in not being 'solely the cost of upgrading the GPU' and GT72 owners being offered a downgrade to a GT72VR and then charged additionally to upgrade to the GT73VR, when the GT73VR is the most similar in bare features set to the GT72.briedfox likes this. -
Confused. This model was available through NewEgg, Amazon, and it used to have it's own page within the GT80 2QE area.. Why are you saying it's 're-marketed GT'? (see: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834152706 & https://www.amazon.com/MSI-GT80-TITAN-SLI-009-18-4-Inch/dp/B00SB7HYU8 -- The MSI support page for the laptop shows as 'page not here' now.)
Not Cyberpower, powernotebooks? I don't think they're related.
Dunno what I whitebox 16L13 is either. -- I will see what they say about the upgrades/customizations.Last edited: Dec 10, 2016 -
Oops, CyberpowerPC was from another thread
Powernotebooks is just a sad story, but I assume it's a straight from MSI GT80 then.

Here is what I have so far.
http://www.ifshtf.com/files/MSI-GT72-GT80-TRADE-PROGRAM.xlsx
Here is the spreadsheet. Feel free to send me the other values for the other trade-in models and I'll get them uploaded to the sheet. There are about 5 missing MSI models, but some were duplicates and I couldn't even tell the differences using the MSI compare tool. If I missed an important model, please send me the 3 digit number code for the model.
This helped me a bit. It looks like I can move from my GT80S-SLI-001 into a GT73VR-017 for $100. This would actually downgrade me (from 980m SLI to 1070 & 256SSD (2x128SSD) to a single 128SSD), and I'd have to pay $100 for the downgrade... This would also be giving up the premium chasis with steelseries mechanical keyboard of the GT80S.
I still can't help but feel like they are about $200 off on the trade-in prices for my specific model given the above example. Hopefully other models have more favorable pricing.
Hopefully this helps?Last edited: Dec 11, 2016hmscott likes this. -
Here is what MSI sent me, as a screenshot instead of the text list I posted earlier:
Double check against this, if there is one you don't have you can add it to yours, if you found one that MSI didn't list that would be interesting too.
Send your findings to MSI USA Trade-in Team, let them know at the top it's from NBR - include the URL to your post here, and let us know what they say to your questions.
Ask them to send you a list of the laptop models allowed for trade-in with their MSRP and / or Trade-in Value valid through Dec 31, 2016. Then you have what you need to fill out the Excel functions to give a quick lookup for trade-ins
Thanks! -
I actually started building it off your list and the list they sent me since i asked for prices for about 7 different models, so it should have everything from your list. There was one number I didn't find from your list - it was a digit off. The GT72VR Dominator-255 is actually -254. Either that, or MSI simply neglected to include it on the MSI website and instead included the -254 which is the exact same MSRP.
I haven't had any replies from them in about 2 weeks. I sent a counter-offer (actually 2) to Ming early on, and I'm sure that got me dropped from the friendly reply list. Prior to that, they were emailing me back daily. -
On the topic of the "downgrade", as it turns out the GT73 w/single 1070 performs almost at the full OC speed of my GT80 SLI-263:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...cussions-lounge.794968/page-143#post-10408041
And, a single 1080 just above my top OC score for graphics score:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...cussions-lounge.794968/page-143#post-10408107
And, you only need to carry 1 power supply, vs 2 x 230w for the 1070 SLI, or the 2 x 330w for the 1080 SLI GT83VR.
I think the sweet spot right now is the GT73VR + single 1070, but the GT73VR 1080 single is still worth the extra if you must drive some games higher in performance.
The GT83VR is awesome, but the 2 x 330w PSU's + coupler box is just a bit too much to carry around every day, I'd happily do it, but it would be noticed
That model naming discrepency would be a good question to resolve with them.
I appreciate you picking up some of the load, and it's not a bad idea to have more people getting regular access / answers to MSI USA Trade-in Team.
I'm not saying that's gonna happen, as they are overloaded and have left me hanging for periods of time as well, but it's worth a try.
I don't think you got dropped, I think the representative can't directly approve a price offer, they have to run it back to their management.
Maybe hold off asking about that in this interaction, but be sure and pick it up again - nicely - in your last reply email
And, that's also a helpful note to others, when you have MSI on a rapid email exchange, try to keep it going with positive questions they can answer, and leave the $offer$ email until near the last if they need to have their own email interaction with their management.
I would follow up with another email after a few days, and a few days after that until I got an answer to the offer
Have you sent anything in the last 2 weeks?
If not this other interaction where you are from NBR and building an Excel spreadsheet to help owners do the trade-in calculations is a good ice breaker to get back in communications.Last edited by a moderator: Dec 13, 2016 -
I've sent a couple of followups and an additional offer. No replies from MSI. It was all going well until I sent a counter-offer. Never received a, "let me see what I can do" or anything. Just POOF. Gone.
The GT73VR Titan is still a downgrade for me, because I really like the 18.4" display and the full mechanical keyboard. They were pretty much the main selling point for this GT80S laptop (as well as the overall performance). If I move into a GT73VR, I'll be going back to being tethered to a mechanical keyboard.
I've even gone so far as to ask about a SINGLE 1070 or 1080 for the GT83VR and they indicated that was also not an option. -
Yeah, single GPU GT80's were out for a while, but when the owners asked about a 2nd GPU for a SLI upgrade, MSI told them they weren't doing any upgrades within the same generation GPU. No 980m => 980 either.
@ryzeki likes his 17.3" 120hz G-sync GT73VR screen (TN) over the GT80 18.4", better color and better contrast, his posts about it are in the GT73VR thread and even here too, search around:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...rade-discussion.795236/page-336#post-10401643
The mechanical keyboard in the GT80 is nice, unique, but I use external keyboards at home and on the road, so it's not such a loss to me.
There was talk of a low profile mechanical keyboard making it into the GT73, but not this generation, maybe the next
IDK what to say about the lack of response from MSI USA on an offer like that. Be patient and keep reminding them to get back to you with a counter offer or at least a response to let you know where they are in the process.Last edited: Dec 11, 2016 -
I sent the email off to Ming and USGTTRADEIN - also linked back to my post and the spreadsheet. Hopefully they reply.
If the GT73VR had low profile mechanical keys it would be less of an issue. I'm not totally opposed to a GT73VR, but getting into the current GT73VR would be like going back to a typical gaming laptop instead of something more unique like the GT80 series.
I still feel like my offers from MSI are about $200 off on the GT73VR Trades and about $400-500 off on the GT83VR Trades given the current pricing, sales, etc. The worst part is that most of the laptops are currently on sale with anywhere from $200-$600 off MSRP.
If I could get into the GT73VR-202 for $800 (or GT73VR-003 for $500), I'd be ok with it. Plus I'd still have to buy a Blue Ray drive. I couldn't even justify spending any $ on moving to a 1070 given that I already have a 980m SLI. -
Yeah, there really is no exciting upgrade from a 980m SLI without going full 1080 SLI, at least in my estimation.
Another way to think about it is you are preserving value forward to have a newer laptop for the Volta trade-in.
MSI USA hasn't answered me yet on what our Maxwell trade-in values will be if we wait until the 2nd generation.
If MSI will allow us to wait and still have the same trade-in value as now then there is no penalty for waiting until the 2nd generation to trade-in. We really need an answer from MSI on this.
Otherwise if the value goes down between now and Volta, getting a Pascal trade-in now would make sense even if I want to wait till Volta, just to preserve value.
IDK what to say about the cost of trade-in vs. Xmas sales, but it's worth bringing up. IDK what they can do about it, but it's a valid point.
Hopefully they will answer your emails, soon
-
The future value of our devices also has me concerned. One of the emails already stated that waiting will increase our costs, but MSI hasn't given any clarification to describe what that really means for cost. My 980m SLI is enough for right now, and there aren't many AAA titles out that are forcing me over to Pascal.
I was also considering the trade-in to preserve value for the next gen. For me to even justify a trade-in, it has to be some form of 1080. Dual 1080's might be justifiable at the right price, but I can't even justify the dual power bricks for the 1070 SLI. -
Well I got an offer which looks good, I mostly just loose 16Gm of memory and 256Gb of SSD.
Not That I`m botherd, can always upgrade and getting a 32GB mem system was silly anyway.
I never sued that much memory. What I will miss is the dragon design of my laptop as its the 29th special dragon edition. I love the look and feel of it, sucks I`m going back to the normal MSI design, but I need more power for VR.
Anyway, how do I send my laptop in ?
I have tried replying to the email but it just bounces back.
Do I wait for a letter in the post or do I contact MSI.hmscott likes this. -
When you say the offer looks good, is that in comparison to the cost of buying a new laptop or in comparison to the cost of upgrading an MXM GPU?briedfox likes this.
-
If you are based in the USA, please post your current model, the model they are moving you in to and the cost of the upgrade.
I need to compile more data for the spreadsheet.
Thanks. -
Pretty much unless your HMscott and get special treatment you wait for weeks to a month+ for a reply that isn't a generic response to everyone.
-
This is exactly right. This was the concern I had originally regarding 'waiting for the next generation', obviously costs fluctuate based on other components beyond the GPU and your depreciating value of current (now 'static' due to their miscalculation) hardware.. so making the claim 'comparable to a GPU upgrade' is a bit .. off.
I'd be spending over $2,000 to get the 1080's in SLI which looking at the way they tier their upgrade section would guarantee my next 'upgrade' path being in the 'highest group'.
I fear waiting months to upgrade would result in a $200-500 price decrease in the worth of my machine with the new CPU's let alone another ~$700-1000-ish for the next gen GPU's..
This also ignores any costs associated with missing OEM components or possible 'repair' or other costs.
I do want to re-ask the question of if this next gen (pascal) IS upgrade-able through the same program.hmscott likes this. -
If you got an offer I would have expected you already received in one of those emails a list of steps or instructions on how to follow through.
We haven't had anyone report the email address as bouncing, maybe double check to see if it's a valid email address format?
Try sending to the original form email address too: [email protected]
Here is a recent posted response from MSI that shows the steps to trade-in, look to your emails from MSI to find that same info:

I wouldn't have sent it to uksupport, as if the UK Trade-in Team is anything like the MSI USA Trade-in Team, they are an independent group apart from normal support.
Please let us know when it works itself out and the email address works again, I am sure the other UK folk would want to know
